With millions of people across five continents experiencing scorching heat last month, the European Union's (EU) climate agency, Copernicus <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">Climate Change</keyword> Service (C3S), confirmed on Monday that June was the warmest on record. It also marked the 12th consecutive month of <keyword id="20524196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperatures" source="keywords">global temperatures</keyword> reaching <keyword id="22325521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="1-5-degrees-Celsius" source="keywords">1.5 degrees Celsius</keyword> above the pre-industrial average. According to scientists at C3S, every month since June last year has been the warmest such month on record. In January, the world completed an entire year with the mean surface air temperature exceeding the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold. June was the 12th consecutive month with monthly average temperatures above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. At the 2015 UN climate talks in Paris, world leaders committed to limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. However, a permanent breach of the 1.5-degree Celsius limit specified in the <keyword id="20104670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Agreement" source="keywords">Paris Agreement</keyword> refers to long-term warming over a 20 or 30-year period. Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.2 degrees Celsius compared to the average in 1850-1900 due to the rapidly-increasing concentration of <keyword id="20649149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenhouse-gases" source="keywords">greenhouse gases</keyword> -- primarily carbon dioxide and methane -- in the atmosphere. This warming is considered to be the reason behind record droughts, wildfires and floods worldwide. According to new data, June 2024 was the warmest on record, with an average surface air temperature of 16.66 degrees Celsius, 0.67 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for the month and 0.14 degrees Celsius above the previous high set in June 2023. "The month was 1.5 degrees Celsius above the estimated June average for 1850-1900, the designated pre-industrial reference period, making it the 12th consecutive month to reach or break the 1.5-degree threshold," C3S said in a statement. It was also the 13th consecutive month of <keyword id="21477127" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="record-high-temperatures" source="keywords">record-high temperatures</keyword>, a result of the combined effect of the 2023-24 El Nino event and human-caused climate change. While unusual, a similar streak of monthly global temperature records happened previously in 2015-16. "This is more than a statistical oddity and highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate. Even if this specific streak of extremes ends at some point, we are bound to see new records being broken as the climate continues to warm. This is inevitable, unless we stop adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and the oceans," said Carlo Buontempo, the director of C3S. The European climate agency said the global average temperature for the last 12 months (July 2023-June 2024) is the highest on record, at 0.76 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and 1.64 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. The world's sea surface in June was also the highest ever recorded for the month. Several countries experienced record-breaking heat and devastating floods and storms in June. According to an analysis by Climate Central, an independent group of scientists and communicators based in the United States, more than 60 per cent of the world population faced extreme heat that was made at least three times more likely by climate change during June 16-24. Climate Central said the blistering heat in June impacted 619 million (61.9 crore) people in India, 579 million (57.9 crore) in China, 231 million (23.1 crore) in Indonesia, 206 million (20.6 crore) in Nigeria, 176 million (17.6 crore) in Brazil, 171 million (17.1 crore) in Bangladesh, 165 million (16.5 crore) in the US, 152 million (15.2 crore) in Europe, 123 million (12.3 crore) in Mexico, 121 million (12.1 crore) in Ethiopia and 103 million (10.3 crore) in Egypt. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), northwest India recorded its warmest June since 1901. India, which experienced one of its hottest and longest heatwaves, recorded more than 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases and over 100 heat-related deaths. The intense heat overwhelmed the water supply system and power grids, with Delhi grappling with a severe water crisis. According to the IMD, 11 states recorded 20 to 38 heatwave days -- up to four times the usual number of such days -- during the April-to-June period. The mercury breached 50 degrees Celsius in parts of Rajasthan, with night temperatures hovering around 35 degrees Celsius in many places. Temperatures were most above average over eastern Canada, the western United States and Mexico, Brazil, northern Siberia, the Middle East, northern Africa, and western Antarctica. June warmest on record; every month since July 2023 breached 1.5 deg C threshold

This was the fourth consecutive month when <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> witnessed an upward journey. The wholesale price index (<keyword id="19936844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WPI" source="keywords">WPI</keyword>) based inflation was 2.61% in May. It was (-) 4.18% in June 2023. Wholesale inflation had touched a high of 3.85% in February 2023."Positive rate of inflation in June, 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of food products, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, mineral oils, other manufacturing etc," the Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry said in a statement on Monday. As per the data, inflation in food articles rose 10.87% cent in June, as against 9.82% in May. Inflation in vegetables was 38.76% during June, up from 32.42% in May. Onion inflation was at 93.35%, while potato was 66.37% in the month under review. Pulses inflation rose 21.64% in June. During the month, inflation in other food items like fruits stood at 10.14%, cereals at 9.27%, and milk at 3.37%. The up move in the WPI inflation in June 2024 was broad-based, driven by all the major segments except fuel and power, ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said. Looking ahead, she said, the headline WPI inflation is expected to dip to about 2% in July 2024, driven by a favourable base, as well as some cooling in global commodity prices. With regard to oil prices, she said, the average price of the Indian basket of crude oil has been quite volatile in July 2024 so far, on the back of supply-demand mismatches, witnessing a month-on-month rise (USD 86.6/bbl up to July 11). Higher crude oil prices might exert an upward pressure to the headline WPI inflation in the ongoing month, she added. In the fuel and power basket, inflation stood at 1.03%, marginally lower than 1.35% in May. However, price rise in crude petroleum &amp; natural gas was in double digit at 12.55%during the month. In manufactured products, inflation was at 1.43% in June, higher than 0.78% in May. The rise in June WPI was in line with the <keyword id="19999652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="keywords">retail inflation</keyword> data for the month. Retail inflation rose to a four-month high of 5.1% in June, data released last week showed. WPI inflation surges to 16-month high of 3.36% in June on costlier vegetables

Business Insider couldn't independently verify the claim, but experts have documented an increased focus on knocking out enemy air defenses.Ukraine didn't say where all of these air defense systems were destroyed, but it has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-using-experimental-defense-system-to-defend-crimea-ukraine-2024-6">intensified its attacks in Crimea over the past month</a>, with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reporting major strikes against S-300 and S-400 systems. With fewer defensive systems threatening its aircraft, Ukraine could have more freedom of movement for conducting air operations.Ukraine is only set to receive a smaller number of F-16s, though, which may require it to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-permission-hit-russia-f-16s-not-best-use-experts-2024-6">more careful with how it uses them</a>. Still, the aircraft will serve as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-wants-f-16s-soviet-fighter-jets-dont-cut-it-2023-8">boost to its arsenal of aging Soviet aircraft</a> and potentially create new opportunities.

The forecast was 0.2%, which would have matched the previous month-over-month increase.The slowdown in inflation comes just a couple weeks before the Fed's next meeting. The last time it rose by as low as 0.2% was in August 2021. "The index for gasoline fell 3.8 percent in June, after declining 3.6 percent in May, more than offsetting an increase in shelter," the BLS news release stated.Shelter's year-over-year increase continued to slow in June, with an increase of 5.2% after May's year-over-year increase of 5.4%. The gas index declined 2.5% for the 12 months ending June.

At the briefing, People's Bank of China, or POBC, governor Pan Gongsheng <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.gov.cn/lianbo/fabu/202409/content_6976186.htm">announced</a> cuts to several interest rates and a reduction in the amount of money banks need to hold in reserve."The PBOC unleashed policy euphoria as markets deemed the 'big guns' unleashed with the rash of aggressive stimulus," Vishnu Varathan, Mizuho's macro research head for Asia excluding Japan, wrote in a note on Wednesday.This not only boosted China's previously downbeat stock markets, but also helped the yuan pull off a "remarkable surge," Varathan added.On Wednesday, the US dollar to offshore <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/usd-cnh">Chinese yuan, or CNH</a> rate fell to as low as 6.9951, the first time it breached the 7 per dollar level since May 2023. This means $1 could buy fewer Chinese yuan.The USD/CNH is about 1.6% lower so far this year. The currency pair was now around the 7.01 level at 12 p.m. in China Standard Time.To be sure, the yuan has been strengthening recently, and this trend is not all thanks to China.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-reserve-interest-rate-cuts-mortgage-investment-credit-savings-2024-9">US Federal Reserve </a>announced a big interest rate cut last week. This is putting pressure on the US dollar, because rate cuts mean yields in dollar assets would be falling.In anticipation of the Fed rate cut, the yuan has been strengthening against the dollar since end-June, in part because some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dedollarization-china-businesses-hoarding-us-dollars-fx-earnings-yuan-renminbi-2024-4">Chinese exporters</a> have been repatriating dollar earnings they were hoarding.In August, capital inflows into China reached $7 billion — the first inflow since July 2023, according to an analysis from Larry Hu, the head of China economics at Macquarie Group.Exporters also converted $37 billion of foreign exchange into the yuan — the highest level since September 2022, Hu added.<h2 id="8225dc60-2f22-4782-b4cc-9e3fef15b93f">A strong yuan is bad for exports</h2>Even though a strong yuan signals confidence in China's economy, analysts aren't sure the gains will hold.That's because a stronger yuan would make China's exports more expensive and less competitive.Given that China's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-household-deposits-savings-luxury-consumer-demand-slowdown-economy-outlook-2024-7">consumer confidence</a> is really weak and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-weak-domestic-demand-factory-activity-amid-strong-export-2024-7">domestic demand</a> is flagging, while exports — a key pillar of the country's economy — have been robust, Beijing may not be happy keeping the yuan stronger for longer.As Swiss private bank Lombard Odier's CIO office wrote on Tuesday, there is a "fundamental inconsistency" between a strong yuan and credible reflation, which refers to policies intended to reverse <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-markets-deflation-chart-investors-consumer-prices-outlook-beijing-2024-3">deflation</a> — an economic challenge China is facing now.China has a tight grip on the yuan, so Beijing does have a big influence on the currency.On Tuesday, Pan said China will prevent the markets from forming one-sided expectations and guard against the risk of the yuan overshooting so that the currency's exchange rate can be at a "reasonable and balanced level."On Wednesday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="http://www.pbc.gov.cn/zhengcehuobisi/125207/125217/125925/5467164/index.html">China's central bank</a> indicated its neutral stance on the yuan via way of its daily midpoint fix, which it pegged at 7.0202 per dollar — this is against the 7.0206 traders and analysts had estimated in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-25/yuan-rallies-past-7-per-dollar-for-first-time-since-may-2023">Bloomberg survey.</a> The yuan is allowed to trade within a 2% range above or below the midpoint.Macquarie's Hu wrote in his note on Friday that there may limited room for the yuan to gain further."While the falling US yield may encourage exporters to convert more dollars into RMB, the main determinant of exporters' FX conversion is China's domestic demand and business confidence, which remain weak," wrote Hu, referring to the renminbi, the official name for the Chinese currency."The PBOC may not want to see a rapid CNY appreciation that hurts exports, the main bright spot for now," he added.

That translates to more stable, predictable revenue over time.Despite stiffening competition, Oura's Hale told Bloomberg that the company doesn't "have to do that much" to continue growing, adding that its profit margins are more similar to those of software manufacturers than those of traditional hardware companies.Hale said Oura has no immediate plans to go public. And now, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-ban-tiktok-movement-is-losing-momentum-among-americans-2024-9">just a third of Americans support a ban, compared to half of the country in 2023, according to Pew Research</a>.It is possible that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/06/23/2024/tiktok-in-denial-as-us-ban-approaches">TikTok-isn't-going-anywhere mindset</a> is a bad misjudgment — just like it was when the TikTok ban bill first arrived earlier this year.But either way, we're in an extraordinary time: One of the country's most popular services could theoretically disappear in a few months — and you're not hearing a peep about it.

"At Rs 1,189 crore, growing 31 per cent YoY (year-on-year), the company reported its highest ever and 19th consecutive quarter of PAT growth on the back of strong operational performance and execution excellence across all its businesses of generation, transmission &amp; distribution, and renewables," Tata Power said in a statement. According to the statement, these businesses contributed 84 per cent of the PAT (net profit) in Q1FY25, compared to 72 per cent in the same period in FY24. The statement showed that the consolidated net profit before exceptional items was Rs 906 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2023. The company's revenue rose 12 per cent YoY to a record high of Rs 16,810 crore (from Rs 15,003 crore in Q1 FY24), and EBITDA grew 11 per cent to Rs 3,350 crore in the reported quarter (from Rs 3,005 crore in Q1 FY24). EBITDA refers to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. "All our businesses have grown profitably on the back of operational efficiency, execution excellence, and sustained business momentum," said Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Power. He informed that the planned capex for this financial year is Rs 20,000 crore and the company is committed to adopting and leading the new and emerging clean energy technologies, including pumped hydro projects, hydropower projects in Bhutan, and opportunities to develop small modular nuclear reactors as the government policy evolves. The company has recorded a capex investment of Rs 4,000 crore in Q1FY25. It has a clean and green installed capacity of 6.1 GW as of Q1FY25, accounting for 41 per cent of the capacity, with another 5.3 GW under execution. The combined order pipeline for utility-scale EPC and solar rooftop, including group captive, is Rs 15,500 crore. Tata Power is poised to garner 20 per cent market share in the residential rooftop segment on the back of its new solar manufacturing facility and strong pan-India channel partner network, it said. Tata Power net profit up 31% to ₹1,189 crore in June quarter

Before the controversy fully settled, the company is facing another significant challenge: a lawsuit from US regulators.On Monday, the Department of Justice <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/adobe_complaint.pdf">sued</a>, saying Adobe violated consumer protection laws by hiding expensive fees and making it difficult to cancel subscriptions. The lawsuit follows a Federal Trade Commission investigation into Adobe's practices.Regulators said in the complaint that Adobe entices people to "enroll in its default, most lucrative subscription plan without clearly disclosing important plan terms."Per the DOJ, Adobe fails to tell users that when they sign up for an annual plan that's charged monthly, they are agreeing to a year-long commitment — including a termination fee that could be hundreds of dollars.The disclosures are hidden behind optional textboxes and hyperlinks and are "designed to go unnoticed," the lawsuit said. Early termination fee details only appear when users try to cancel, effectively trapping them in subscriptions they don't want."Through these practices, Adobe has violated federal laws designed to protect consumers," prosecutors wrote.Prosecutors wrote that the company has been made aware of government scrutiny into its subscription practices since June 2022, but continued with them.The suit also names two Adobe executives as defendants: Maninder Sawhney, the senior vice president of digital go-to-market and sales, and David Wadhwani, the president of the digital media business. The complaint says both executives "directed, controlled," or "participated" in Adobe's practices.Adobe plans to refute the government's claims in court, the company said in a statement."We are transparent with the terms and conditions of our subscription agreements and have a simple cancellation process," Dana Rao, Adobe's general counsel, said in the statement.Adobe previously sold its popular products, like Photoshop, for an upfront fee. In recent years, it switched to monthly subscriptions, which investors prefer because revenue is easier to predict. The company nearly doubled its subscription revenue from 2019 to 2023, to $14.2 billion. Adobe made $19.4 billion overall last year.<h2 id="1a32713b-4691-4676-99e0-a9294f0ac399">New terms of service lead to outcry</h2>The lawsuit comes on the heels of another serious concern artists and designers have recently raised with Adobe products.Earlier this month, the tech giant asked users to sign new terms with language that some thought implied that their content could be reproduced, displayed, or modified by Adobe — a big concern since Adobe is pushing hard into generative AI.Some creators said they quit the platform over their licensing and AI scraping concerns, prompting the company to clarify the new terms in two <a target="_blank" href="https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2024/06/10/updating-adobes-terms-of-use">blog posts</a> over the last two weeks."Your content is yours and will never be used to train any generative AI tool. New Delhi, Global rating agency Moody's has raised India's growth forecast to 6.7 per cent from 5.5 per cent for 2023. At the same time though, it has lowered the <keyword id="35050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP" source="Orion">GDP</keyword> forecast for 2024 from 6.5 per cent to 6.1 per cent. "Since the second quarter out performance creates a high base in 2023, we have lowered our 2024 growth forecast from 6.5 percent to 6.1 per cent. Given the robust underlying economic momentum, we also recognise further upside risk to India's economic growth performance," it said on Friday. Moody's 6.7 per cent growth forecast for 2023 is slightly higher than RBI's projection of 6.5 per cent for 2023-24. India has recorded a growth of 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal, which was lower than RBI's projection of 8 per cent for the April-June period of 2023-24.
