It's natural for startups to feel skeptical when entering a space which has not taken off yet or has a poor track record, but that is also where some of the biggest opportunities lie. For <a href="http://www.simplilearn.com/">Simplilearn</a> - an education startup which kicked off six years ago along with a few other online players, it was a risky affair to dive into the Ed-Tech space considering the general mood of investors was negative owing to the failure of several other education portals.

 At a time when others were struggling to find the right model and make their mark in the Indian market, Simplilearn had got it right not just in India, but globally. In a candid chat with <keyword id="687315" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashyap-Dalal">Kashyap Dalal</keyword>, the Chief Business Officer at Simplilearn, we learnt some of the reasons why this Ed-Tech portal proved to be the best in the crowd: 
 
The idea with which this Startup was launched 
"The entire business started off more with the realization that there are sectors which are developing and growing so fast that normal academia does not have the ability to adapt to its pace. Typically, the cycle of curriculum updation at schools and colleges is 3 to 5 years. However, if you have to look at emerging fields like big data, cloud computing etc, every six months there's something new which is very critical for people to know. This is the reason we are clearly focused on extending education in some of these fast emerging technology areas," says Kashyap. 
 
The Market they decided to cater to and why 
He shares that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Certificate-courses-for-your-career/articleshow/53618254.cms">Simplilearn customers are working professionals</a>. 
 
“The goal is to give them competency in emerging fields so that they can go ahead in their career. Right from the beginning, we have been focused on building our courses in such a way that people who use Simplilearn get hands-on skills, and not just theoretical knowledge. We build courses thinking – if I wanted a person in my Big Data Team, what should he know. Apart from the professionals, the other market that we cater to is enterprises who want to train an entire team. This is again a very large line of business for us," says Kashyap. 
 
The experts they got onboard for imparting education 
They wanted people who are “on top of their game”. 
 
Kashyap says – “It is just incidental that most of the experts we have are based in the US. We just want people who are really on the cutting edge of the field and who can predict the future, as opposed to someone who is stuck in legacy systems. Their experience and knowledge helps us be on the cutting edge as well.” 
 This forms one of the major reasons for Simplilearn’s success. We asked him how they were able to rope in thought leaders like <keyword id="3565625" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="joseph-steinberg">Joseph Steinberg</keyword>. This Ed-Tech portal didn’t go the typical way 
“Simplilearn started off on a global level. It is different compared to companies which start in India and then test the waters globally. Because the online footprint of Simplilearn is not that of an Indian startup, things have not been as difficult for us. More importantly, when you tell someone about your company, they don’t see where it is based; they see the online footprint and what people are talking about you. If it looks great to them, there is no reason why they would feel skeptical about joining us and I think that is what happened with us too,” says Kashyap. 
 
Experts here are just not consultants, they are Advisory Board members 
He adds – “Also, we give our experts the opportunity to become our business partners. They are not with us for part time assignments or on a consulting basis; they are our Advisory Board members. Therefore, we make it really very meaning for them to associate with us. It’s simple; you need to have technology and a very large set up to be able to run a business. We tell them we have it, you give us the expertise and knowledge and we will drive the business.” 
 
The Way Simplilearn Courses were built 
Their courses are highest on engagement. There are reasons behind this, Kashyap explains – “When a person starts a Simplilearn course, he decides his study plan, whether he wants to devote 3 or 6 hours a week to the course depending on his personal comfort. The system immediately starts building his course according to the inputs provided. On not adhering to the plan, reminder emails would go to him. More importantly, the courses are designed in a way that the first 15-20 minutes can get a user excited about pursuing it. It would talk about the industry, the high end education that the course will cover in the module and builds that entire context as to why it makes sense to do the course. So, before even starting out, the person has a bird’s eye view on the path he is going to take and that makes it very easy for them to adopt the course and stay on, otherwise often when suddenly online courses dive into hard core learning aspects, user loses interest because he fails to understand what is being taught.” 
 
With nearly 40% revenues coming from both the US and the Indian market, even as this online education portal has become the market leader in India and is striving to sustain its place, in the US, Kashyap says, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done considering the dynamics there are different and the US market definitely has more competition in the Ed-tech space.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In August 1945, the US used atomic bombs on Japan, killing over 100,000 people.</li><li>Weeks before, dozens of Manhattan Project scientists signed a petition opposing its use.</li></ul>On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, killing at least 100,000 people instantly and thousands more from radiation illnesses and injuries, according to the <a href="https://museum.archives.gov/featured-document-display-atomic-bombing-hiroshima-and-nagasaki" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Archives Museum</a>. Three weeks earlier, Leo Szilard and dozens of other scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project signed a petition to President Harry Truman, pleading with him to reconsider dropping the bombs they had helped create. <h2>'Opposition on moral grounds'</h2>While the bombs would likely end the war, they felt "that such attacks on Japan could not be justified" until Japan was told about the weapon and given a chance to surrender. Seventy scientists, mostly from the Chicago Met Lab and Tennessee Oak Ridge project sites, added their signatures. "I personally feel that it would be a matter of importance if a large number of scientists who have worked in this field went clearly and unmistakably on record as to their opposition on moral grounds to the use of these bombs in the present phase of the war," Szilard wrote in the <a href="https://www.dannen.com/decision/45-07-04.html">petition's cover letter</a>. The petition didn't include names from the Los Alamos, New Mexico scientists because they weren't given the chance to sign, Edward Teller, one of the Manhattan Project's scientists, <a href="https://ahf.nuclearmuseum.org/voices/oral-histories/edward-tellers-interview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">later said</a>.J. Robert Oppenheimer, director of Los Alamos Laboratory, persuaded Teller not to distribute the petition. "Oppenheimer talked me out of it, saying that we as scientists have no business to meddle in political pressure of that kind," Teller said. The major fans of horrorcore-rap duo Insane Clown Posse are widely known for wearing intense face paint, dressing as clowns, wearing hatchet symbols, and drinking <a href="https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/faygo-juggalos-american-history">Faygo soda</a>.While it's hard to track the exact number of attendees, previous Gatherings have drawn upwards of 20,000 people, <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/local/2019/07/31/juggalos-gathering-indiana-heres-what-you-should-know/1864770001/">organizers told the IndyStar in 2019.</a>But decades into the existence of the Insane Clown Posse fandom, it remains largely misunderstood by mainstream society.The community was labeled by the FBI as a non-traditional gang in its <a href="http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/2011-national-gang-threat-assessment/2011%20National%20Gang%20Threat%20Assessment%20%20Emerging%20Trends.pdf">2011</a> National Gang Threat Assessment. "To me at least, there's no level of love and community and just people being able to safely and happily be themselves, however weird or different it might be, than what I experience at any ICP show," Dough told Insider. <h2>The Juggalos are fans of the Insane Clown Posse, a rap duo whose albums tell stories in a fictional universe</h2><div type="image" title="Two men with clown face paint and dark wigs make goofy faces at the camera in a black-and-white photo." height="619" width="1024" msid="85782421" hostid="261"></div>In the simplest terms, Juggalos are fans of the Insane Clown Posse, representing a predominately white, working-class subculture of people of all genders, many of whom feel <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/09/15/550724673/who-are-the-juggalos-and-why-are-they-marching-in-washington-d-c">like outcasts from mainstream society</a>. As <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/21/16163816/insane-clown-posses-juggalo-march-on-washington">Vox reported</a> in 2017, a Juggalo is just a fan in the same way a Belieber or Swiftie is devoted to Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, respectively. Originating in Detroit in the early 1990s, the Insane Clown Posse - Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) - have developed a complex musical universe of symbols, themes, and aesthetics that have reverberated through the community since. In their first album, 1992's "Carnival of Carnage," the duo introduced the narrative of a traveling carnival of spirits who enter upper-class neighborhoods to punish the rich for their crimes against the working class. With each subsequent album, Insane Clown Posse (often called "ICP") has introduced new characters, like the Ringmaster, the Great Milenko, and The Amazing Jeckel Brothers, each of whom has their own story and function within the greater arc of the Dark Carnival, or the extended Insane Clown Posse musical universe. Each installment is referred to as a Joker's Card. <div type="image" title="A Juggalo with black and white face-paint, dreadlocks, and a beard posing for a portrait." height="1247" width="998" msid="85782424" hostid="261"></div>Fans quickly began to follow the group after their first album, with the term "Juggalos" <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/09/15/550724673/who-are-the-juggalos-and-why-are-they-marching-in-washington-d-c">originating from an off-hand comment</a> during a concert performance of the song "The Juggla." There are no official numbers for how many people identify as Juggalos, though the FBI's 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment reported that there were 1 million self-identifying Juggalos and Juggalettes.There's also evidence that many youths who are homeless identify as Juggalos "because the group's music embraces poverty and being an outsider in mainstream society," according to a 2017 <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5409874/pdf/nihms826326.pdf">article published in the Child Psychiatry &amp; Human Development</a> scientific journal, which also found that "Juggalos are stereotyped as being violent, undereducated, poor, racist, crime-committing youth." <h2>Insane Clown Posse music is horror-themed, but not without purpose </h2><div type="image" title="A group of Insane Clown Posse fans stands in a protest with signs that read 'JUGGALO 4 LIFE,' 'WTF FBI,' and 'Fuck Fascism.'" height="683" width="1024" msid="85782426" hostid="261"></div>Much of the music in the Dark Carnival is indeed violent and horror-themed, with songs about chopping up bodies or murdering an entire family in hopes of luring one's ghost lover back. But in most cases, this terror serves a narrative purpose: often, the violence is explained in the lyrics by Insane Clown Posse as retribution for the working class or an <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/21/16163816/insane-clown-posses-juggalo-march-on-washington">attack on racism</a>, but more simply, it's a metaphorical expression of anger originating from systematic oppression. That said, literal violence isn't part of what it means to be a Juggalo. <a href="https://www.academia.edu/43572795/Insane_Clown_Posse_and_the_Liminal_World_of_Carnival_Class_and_Juggalo_Family?source=swp_share">Most Juggalos assert</a> that their community is more about peace and love than the hatchet symbols and scary clown costumes might suggest. The most significant embodiment of this is through the annual Gathering of the Juggalos, the multi-day music festival featuring numerous performers, wrestling matches, parties, and generally carnivalesque behavior, culminating in an Insane Clown Posse performance in which typically everyone gets sprayed with Faygo, a soda brand popular in the midwest. It's something Insane Clown Posse has themselves been doing for nearly every public appearance since their beginning.This dynamic is something the late sociologist <a href="https://obituaries.bowdoin.edu/karen-b-halnon/">Karen Bettez Halnon</a> explored in reference to the Gathering and other music festivals, describing it as embodying what she coined as "grotesque realism," a "potentially limitless challenge to the structural and moral orders of everyday life," <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1525/si.2006.29.1.33">per a 2006 study</a>. As Halnon <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1163/1569163042119868">explained in her research</a>, acts like costuming and becoming sticky with soda function like uniting rituals among Juggalos. Anyone can be a Juggalo, but to do so requires aligning with an aesthetic that challenges social norms. Quite literally, being a Juggalo requires making a clown of oneself. Falcone has resigned as the CEO or Chairman of Harbinger Group-a publicly traded holding company.
The company said in a news release that Falcone will receive a $20,500,000 one-time payment along with a $16,500,000 bonus for 2014. He will also get a pro-rata bonus of $3,300,000 for 2015.
Falcone rose to prominence shorting subprime mortgages during the financial crisis. The trade made a billionaire.
In the summer of 2012, the SEC charged <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/phil-falcone-and-harbinger-sued-by-the-sec-2012-6">Falcone and his hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners with securities fraud</a>. Falcone and Harbinger Capital eventually admitted to wrongdoing.
In 2013, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/phil-falcone-sec-settlement-2013-8">Falcone reached an agreement with the Securities and Exchange Commission</a> to be barred from the securities industry for at least five years. He also agreed to pay an $18 million penalty. 
Bloomberg Businessweek reports that he is leaving Harbinger Group <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/news/2014-11-25/philip-falcone-steps-down-as-chairman-ceo-of-harbinger-group">to focus more on his hedge fund.</a>

In connection with his resignation, the Company will pay Mr. Falcone a lump sum payment consisting of $20,500,000 one-time payment, $16,500,000 in respect of Mr. Falcone's previously earned and awarded annual bonus for fiscal year 2014 and $3,300,000 as a pro-rata bonus for fiscal year 2015. In addition, the warrants to acquire common stock of HGI that were previously awarded to Mr. Falcone will continue to vest in accordance with their existing vesting schedule.

Phil Falcone Resigns As CEO Of His Holding Company, Walks Away With $40 Million Check

The <keyword id="6362470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="SEC">SEC</keyword> also seeks to bar him from overseeing investor funds, the release states.
"The S.E.C.'s administrative proceeding has no merit. <keyword id="370757" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Steve-Cohen">Steve Cohen</keyword> acted appropriately at all times and will fight this charge vigorously. The S.E.C. ignores SAC's exceptional supervisory structure, its extensive compliance policies and procedures, and Steve Cohen's strong support for SAC's compliance program," Cohen's SAC Capital said in a statement.

Washington D.C., July 19, 2013 — 
The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced charges against hedge fund adviser Steven A. Cohen for failing to supervise two senior employees and prevent them from <keyword id="6360088" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="insider-trading">insider trading</keyword> under his watch.
The SEC’s Division of Enforcement alleges that Cohen received highly suspicious information that should have caused any reasonable hedge fund manager to investigate the basis for trades made by two portfolio managers who reported to him – Mathew Martoma and Michael Steinberg. Cohen ignored the red flags and allowed Martoma and Steinberg to execute the trades. Instead of scrutinizing their conduct, Cohen praised Steinberg for his role in the suspicious trading and rewarded Martoma with a $9 million bonus for his work. Cohen’s <keyword id="116445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hedge-funds">hedge funds</keyword> earned profits and avoided losses of more than $275 million as a result of the illegal trades.
“Hedge fund managers are responsible for exercising appropriate supervision over their employees to ensure that their firms comply with the securities laws,” said Andrew J. Ceresney, Co-Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement. “After learning about red flags indicating potential insider trading by his employees, Steven Cohen allegedly failed to follow up to prevent violations of the law. In addition to the more than $615 million his firm has already agreed to pay for the alleged insider trading, the Enforcement Division is seeking to bar Cohen from overseeing investor funds.”
According to the SEC’s order instituting administrative proceedings against Cohen, portfolio managers Martoma and Steinberg obtained material non-public information about publicly traded companies in 2008, and they traded on the basis of that information. The SEC <a href="http://www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1365171486118">charged Martoma and his tipper</a> with insider trading in an enforcement action last year, and <a href="http://www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1365171513522">charged Steinberg with insider trading</a> in a complaint filed earlier this year. In connection with those cases, CR Intrinsic, an affiliate of Cohen’s firm S.A.C. Capital Advisors, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1365171513308">agreed to pay more than $600 million</a> in the largest-ever insider trading settlement. Another Cohen affiliate, Sigma Capital, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1365171513338">agreed to pay nearly $14 million</a> to settle insider trading charges.
The SEC’s investigation found that in his supervisory role, Cohen oversaw trading by Martoma and Steinberg and required them to update him on their stock trading and convey the reasons for their trades. On at least two separate occasions in 2008, they provided information to Cohen indicating their potential access to inside information to support their trading. However, Cohen stood by on both occasions instead of ascertaining whether insider trading was taking place.
According to the SEC’s order, Cohen watched Martoma build a massive long position in the stock of two pharmaceutical companies – Elan and Wyeth – based on their joint clinical trial of a drug with the potential to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Cohen allowed this despite repeated e-mails and instant messages to Cohen from other analysts at CR Intrinsic advocating against it. The analysts questioned whether Martoma possessed undisclosed data on the results of the trial. Cohen responded by saying it was “tough” to know whether Martoma knew something, but that he would follow Martoma’s advice because he was “closer to it than you.” In later exchanges of instant messages, Cohen further remarked that it “seems like mat [Martoma] has a lot of good relationships in this arena.” Cohen also was told about a doctor who had provided his portfolio managers with potentially non-public information about the clinical trial, but failed to express any concern about the use of that information. During his e-mail exchanges, Cohen displayed no concern that Martoma might possess non-public information or about his use of such information to inform investment decisions at his firm. Instead, Cohen encouraged Martoma to talk further with a doctor familiar with the clinical trial.
The SEC’s Enforcement Division alleges that after months of building up the massive position and being bullish on both Elan and Wyeth, Martoma had a 20-minute phone conversation with Cohen on July 20, 2008. According to Cohen, Martoma said that he was no longer comfortable with the Elan investments that CR Intrinsic and SAC held. Despite Martoma’s abrupt change in view and red flags that he likely received confidential information about the clinical trials from a tipper, Cohen failed to take prompt action to determine whether an employee under his supervision was violating insider trading laws. Starting the next morning, Cohen oversaw the liquidation of his and Martoma’s positions in Elan and Wyeth and the accumulation of a short position instead 
According to the SEC’s order, Cohen also supervised Steinberg while he was involved in insider trading of Dell securities in August 2008. After being looped into a highly suspicious e-mail between Steinberg and other firm employees reflecting the clear possibility that they possessed material non-public information about an upcoming earnings announcement at Dell, Cohen again failed to take prompt action to determine whether Steinberg was engaged in unlawful insider trading. Instead, Cohen liquidated his Dell shares based on the recommendation of Steinberg, who continued short selling Dell shares in his Sigma Capital portfolio based on the confidential information. Dell’s stock price dropped sharply after its August 28 earnings announcement, and funds managed by Cohen’s firms profited or avoided losses totaling at least $1.7 million. Three hours after the earnings announcement, Cohen e-mailed Steinberg: “Nice job on Dell.”
The SEC’s Division of Enforcement alleges that by engaging in the conduct described in the SEC’s order, Cohen failed reasonably to supervise Martoma and Steinberg with a view to preventing their violations of Section 10(b) of the Exchange Act and Rule 10b-5 thereunder. The administrative proceedings will determine what relief is in the public interest against Cohen, including financial penalties, a supervisory and financial services industry bar, and other relief.
The SEC’s investigation, which is continuing, has been conducted by Joseph Sansone, Charles Riely, and Daniel Marcus of the Market Abuse Unit in New York as well as Amelia Cottrell, Matthew Watkins, Justin Smith, Neil Hendelman, Diego Brucculeri, and James D’Avino of the New York Regional Office. The SEC’s litigation effort will be led by Matthew Solomon and Preethi Krishnamurthy. The case has been supervised by Sanjay Wadhwa.
