The MoUs will initiate a Student Exchange Programme (STEP) which will focus on boosting teaching, research, and cultural understanding. “STEP is an integral part of <keyword id="78512" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Calcutta">IIM Calcutta</keyword>’s internationalization efforts. It is aimed at providing IIM Calcutta students an opportunity to have learning experience from international environment,” Professor Prashant Mishra, Dean, New Initiatives and External Relations said. The five-year long agreement with Carleton University will foster research, collaboration, executive training and capacity building with scholarship programmes. “It is the intent of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta to establish precise academic and financial arrangements, and to support, as appropriate, the exchange of personnel between Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and Carleton University,” the university noted. The association between Montpellier Business School and Indian Institute of Management Calcutta will cater to postgraduate and doctoral students, along with teachers and research aspirants. As a part of this, the university will introduce joint executive development programmes, joint research programmes, joint conferences and workshops. “This helps them sharpen their practical skills, equips them with the ability to work in culturally diverse teams and contributes largely to their personal and professional development,” Mishra added. The mission, originally scheduled for a launch by 2022, was delayed due to coronavirus pandemic. It aims to launch a manned mission in the Lower Earth Orbit. "We could have actually done this (launched Gaganyaan by 2022). We had planned to time it along the 75th anniversary of India's Independence, but it could not happen that way because of the inevitable delay caused due to COVID-19. "But I am sure, maybe by the end of next year or may be (by) the beginning of 2023, we would be able to do that as well," he said. Singh, the Minister of State in the Department of Space, was addressing a webinar on 'Future of India-Oceania Space Technology Partnerships' organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce &amp; Industry (FICCI) here. He further said a brainstorming exercise by space scientists and government officials in 2015-16 helped them understand where space technology could be used. "Space technology has a role to play, virtually, in every sector," he asserted. Space technology has come very handy in the area of disaster management, the minister said, adding that space medicine is also deeply connected in the endeavour to send three Indians to space. According to the government, four biological and two physical science related microgravity experiments from academic institutions are shortlisted for unmanned mission of the Gaganyaan programme. Singh also emphasised on the importance of reaching out to start-ups and industry players working in the arena of space. Speaking on India's collaboration with oceanic countries in the area of space, he noted that India has a "comfort level" with these countries which makes it easy to collaborate with them. "The Oceania countries such as New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Island countries can also collaborate (with India) and work on joint space technology solutions and innovative products," the MoS added. Gaganyaan mission likely to be launched by 2022 end or early 2023, says Union Minister

The next firing is planned for July 20 between 2 pm and 3 pm, the national space agency headquartered here said. "The third orbit-raising maneuver (Earth-bound perigee firing) is performed successfully from ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network)/ISRO, Bengaluru," it said. "ISRO's collaboration with Microsoft will greatly benefit space tech startups in their analysis and processing of vast amounts of satellite data for various applications, using cutting-edge methods like AI, Machine Learning and <keyword id="2144645" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deep-learning" source="Orion">Deep Learning</keyword>," said <keyword id="2618685" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="s-somanath" source="Orion">S Somanath</keyword>, Chairman of ISRO. Microsoft join hands with ISRO to empower spacetech startups in India

While we have engaged renowned agencies to conduct Spoken English Classes for our students which benefited nearly 65,000 students, we believe that giving new opportunities to our teachers to acquire global perspective and skills to teach English is a more sustainable approach." This course exposes teachers around the world to the English language teaching resources offered by the Office of English Language Programs at the US Department of State. Thirty Mentor Teachers of Delhi will act as the course facilitators under the guidance of two English language specialists -- Sara Bolton and Lisa Morgon -- to guide, support and give constructive feedback throughout the course to the participating teachers. Delhi government partners with US Embassy to train school teachers in English

Have you ever come across an <keyword id="71310" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="accelerator">accelerator</keyword> programme in India where start-ups are voted by their peers to decide who gets the pre-committed <keyword id="1396410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="seed-money">seed money</keyword>? That’s exactly what is going to happen at global education leader Pearson’s inaugural <keyword id="1894314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Edupreneur">edupreneur</keyword> programme, jointly launched by its Affordable Learning Fund (PALF) and <keyword id="1693490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Village-Capital">Village Capital</keyword>, an organisation that supports mission-driven entrepreneurs around the world. The <keyword id="1894311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pearson-Affordable-Learning-Fund">Pearson Affordable Learning Fund</keyword>, set up last year, invests in low-cost private schools and other affordable educational solutions. 
 
The programme, which has started a couple of weeks ago, has shortlisted 15 educational start-ups that leverage innovative technologies to develop affordable learning solutions for the bottom-of-the-pyramid segment. 
 
After a rigorous initial screening, the final 15 have been chosen out of 125 applicants from all over India. The selected start-ups are now going through Village Capital’s globally recognised curriculum spanning 12 weeks. There will be adequate mentoring, in-person workshops and regular webinars throughout this period and two start-ups will be finally selected through peer reviews to share a cash investment of $150,000 from PALF and Village Capital. 
 The <keyword id="1894317" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="peer-review">peer review</keyword> part is the most intriguing characteristic of this programme as potential competitors evaluate each other on specific parameters and vote for the most suitable candidates. At each workshop, each team pitches to its fellow-edupreneurs, who rank one another’s performance against six criteria necessary for successful scaling. These include customer validation, team strength, product quality, scaling &amp; impact, financial model and exit strategy. However, one cannot rank oneself and all rankings are done publicly. Also, the top and bottom rankings for each company are discarded to reduce the influence of outliers. 
 Once the ranking is done, the top two teams will receive $75,000 of seed <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> each on the Investors’ Demo Day. There will be the traditional connect with the investors as well – so that start-ups can raise funding as per their requirements. 
 
Commenting on the programme, Ranu Kawatra, CEO and president of Pearson Education India, said in a blog post, “With millions of children still out of school in India, it is need of the hour to make quality schooling accessible and affordable for underprivileged children. Edupreneurs seeks to reduce the gap by partnering with entrepreneurs who have the skill and passion for improving access to quality education in poorer communities.”

Australian High Commissioner to <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>, <keyword id="20307863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="philip-green" source="keywords">Philip Green</keyword> OAM, on Wednesday, expressed Canberra's willingness to collaborate with New Delhi in the <keyword id="20242397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-sector" source="keywords">space sector</keyword> and added that both nations are going ahead with the three collaborative space projects and signing the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today. While speaking to ANI, Philip Green expressed <keyword id="19895799" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Australia" source="keywords">Australia</keyword>'s interest in partnering with India in its <keyword id="19929542" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-exploration" source="keywords">space exploration</keyword> endeavours, adding that the Australian government has pledged a USD 18 million grant for <keyword id="22187831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joint-India-Australia-space-projects" source="keywords">joint India-Australia space projects</keyword>. "Here today we are saying that we are keen to be partners for India in its space journey. We're already strategic and quad partners with India and we want to do more with space and my government is backing it," said Philip Green. Today we're signing the first MOU of three that has been settled as a result of an USD 18 million dollar grant for my government specifically, for India-Australia space collaborations," he added. Further, the Australian envoy said they are excited about the <keyword id="20535850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-space-sector" source="keywords">Indian space sector</keyword> and believe its different and complementary skills can benefit each other. "We're very excited about the Indian space sector and we're particularly excited about the fact that Australia has different and complementary skills," the Australian envoy said to ANI. "We're a very big continent with very few numbers of people, which means we have very dark skies. We have great abilities in terms of space tracking," he added. Congratulating PM Modi for his victory in the 2024 general elections, Philip Green said that Australia is looking to work even more closely in the future. He also disclosed during the interview that there could be high-level visits by Australia and India to galvanise the already strong partnership. "We congratulate Modi and his government on re-election. We look forward to working even more closely as we go forward. There are three powerful drivers in our bilateral relationship, our new strategic alignment, the very strong complementarity between our economies and what we call the human bridge, the more than a million people of Indian origin who now make Australia their home," said Philip Green. "We're planning visits I'm not going to announce them to you today, but I can assure you there will be high-level visits by Australia and India to galvanise what is already a strong partnership," he added On April 30, "the Australian Government announced funding for three collaborative space projects that will strengthen the space economy for the two partner nations," said the <keyword id="22187832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Australian-Space-Agency" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Australian Space Agency" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Australian Space Agency">Australian Space Agency</keyword> in an official statement. Each project will include a number of Australian and Indian partners, who will help address climate change, boost manufacturing, and advance artificial intelligence, among other objectives.

A US court has asked <keyword id="285457" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Antrix">Antrix</keyword> Corporation, the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation, to pay compensation of USD 1.2 billion to a Bengaluru-based startup, <keyword id="406024" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Devas-Multimedia">Devas Multimedia</keyword>, for cancelling a satellite deal in 2005. As per the agreement in January 2005, Antrix agreed to build, launch and operate two satellites and to make available 70 MHz of S-band spectrum to Devas, which the latter planned to use to offer hybrid satellite and terrestrial communication services throughout India. The agreement was terminated by Antrix in February 2011. Over the next several years, Devas approached various legal avenues in India. This included the Supreme Court, which directed for a tribunal. In his order dated October 27, Judge Thomas S Zilly, US District Judge, Western District of Washington, Seattle, ruled that Antrix Corporation pay a compensation of USD 562.5 million to Devas Multimedia Corporation and the related interest rate amounting to a total of USD 1.2 billion. In its lawsuit filed in the US District Court, Western District of Washington in September 2018, Devas Multimedia said three separate international tribunals and nine different arbitrators have found the termination of the Devas-Antrix agreement to have been wrongful, with one of the tribunals describing it as "conduct 'which shocks, or at least surprises, a sense of juridical propriety,'" and another finding it to be "a clear breach of simple good faith" by India. Antrix, in November 2018, had sought the dismissal of the lawsuit citing jurisdictional issues. The court, however, asserted that it had jurisdiction over the issue, but stayed the matter for one year and asked the two to file a joint status report by April 15, 2020. On July 16, 2020, both Devas and Antrix filed the instant motion, a Joint Status Report in which they disputed whether the court should lift or extend the stay, and, if the latter, whether Antrix be required to post security. Devas, according to submissions, has argued that the US court has jurisdiction over these cases, as Antrix engages in business in this district and across the United States. Antrix and Spaceflight Industries, which is headquartered in Seattle have an agreement to provide satellite launch services using India's PSLV rocket. Antrix and RBC Signals LLC, which is headquartered in Redmond, Washington have a worldwide agreement to provide space communications services to satellite operators. Antrix in 2018 launched a satellite for Redmond, a Washington-based Planetary Resources. Antrix agreed in 2015 to launch two satellites for Colorado-based PlanetiQ. Antrix is contracted with DigitalGlobe, which has headquarters in Colorado and other locations in Florida, Virginia and Washington to procure certain satellite data, which is then distributed by the Indian Space Research Organisation's National Remote Sensing Centre. Devas said that after the initial signing of the agreement, the two companies performed in good faith for five years. Among other things, in May 2009, Dr Appanna Bhaskarnaryana, the Director of the Satellite Communications Programme Office of <keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>, spent four to five weeks in the US with Devas personnel meeting with Hughes Networks, Sirius XM SkyTerra, Qualcomm and ICO North America to understand the technologies used by, and operation of, hybrid satellite-terrestrial operators providing telecommunications services. Devas subsequently conducted experimental trials in India (attended by Antrix officials, including the company's then chairman), Chengdu and Beijing in China, and Stuttgart in Germany, which successfully demonstrated the hybrid satellite-terrestrial systems and end-user terminals that Devas had developed in conjunction with a global network of leading technology players such as Alcatel Lucent, it said. On February 25, 2011, Antrix issued a termination notice to Devas, which among other things stated that the policy decision was of the central government, acting in its sovereign capacity is the event of force majeure, which was an occurrence on February 23, 2011. "The scope and duration of the said decision cannot be anticipated. It is likely to be indefinite. It is not possible for Antrix to take any effective step to resume the obligations under the agreement," Antrix said. Devas disputed Antrix's repudiation of the agreement and sought to conduct discussions among senior management as contemplated by that agreement. In June 2011, Devas commenced arbitration proceedings under the Rules of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. Antrix initially refused to participate in the arbitration and obtained an injunction from the Indian Supreme Court enjoining the arbitration. After one year, the Supreme Court lifted the injunction, allowing the arbitration to proceed. Thereafter, Antrix participated fully in the arbitration. US court asks ISRO's commercial arm to $1.2 billion compensation to Bengaluru start-up for cancelling a satellite deal

A mission to study the Sun, and launching a climate observation satellite, a test vehicle as part of Gaganyaan human space flight programme and an Indo-US synthetic aperture radar -- <keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword> has a packed schedule ahead. In addition, XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite), the country's first dedicated polarimetry mission to study various dynamics of bright astronomical X-ray sources in extreme conditions, is also ready for launch, an ISRO official said on Tuesday. Aditya-L1, the first space-based Indian observatory to study the Sun, is getting ready for the launch, most likely in September first week. According to ISRO Chairman, Somanath S, the space agency has also lined up the launch of a climate observation satellite INSAT-3DS. The launch of a test vehicle mission, for the validation of the crew escape system for Gaganyaan, the country's maiden human space flight mission, is also expected soon. "(Then) we have to launch NISAR, the India-US built Synthetic Aperture Radar", Somanath said in his independence day address at ISRO headquarters here on August 15. "So, our hands are full." "We are going to build a large number of satellites for our security purpose as well in the coming days," Somanath had said. According to ISRO officials, NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observatory being jointly developed by US space agency NASA and ISRO. NISAR will map the entire globe in 12 days and provide spatially and temporally consistent data for understanding changes in Earth's ecosystems, ice mass, vegetation biomass, sea level rise, ground water and natural hazards including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and landslides, they said. "It carries L and S dual band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which operates with Sweep SAR technique to achieve large swath with high resolution data. The SAR payloads mounted on Integrated Radar Instrument Structure (IRIS) and the spacecraft bus are together called an observatory", an ISRO official noted. Before undertaking the Gaganyaan human space (manned) flight mission, ISRO has planned two unmanned missions. "We are getting ready for the (first of the two) unmanned crew module mission by the beginning of next year", an ISRO official said. The objective of the Gaganyaan mission is to demonstrate the capability of conducting human space flight mission to LEO on-board Indian Launch vehicle. The Orbital module consists of a Crew module and a Service module. Crew module, which is a pressurised module, acts as living quarters for the crew. The orbital module will be positioned in approximately 400 km circular orbit around earth for one to 3 days &amp; the crew module will return at the designated location at sea. A packed launch schedule for ISRO after Chandrayaan-3 mission

<ul><li>India will conduct its first ever simulated space war exercise this week.</li><li>‘IndSpaceEx’ will last two days with the aim of discovering which ‘imminent threats’ face India in outer space.</li><li>India’s apprehension is preceded by China developing space weapons and the US announcing its own Space Force.</li></ul>The Indian Defence ministry is conducting its first ever simulated space war exercise this week called ‘<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/eye-on-china-india-set-to-kickstart-1st-space-war-drill/articleshow/70354760.cms?utm_source=Native_Share_Tray&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=TOIMobile">IndSpaceEx</a>’ that will last for two days. It’s not alone in worrying about a conflict. Space is getting increasingly congested and competitive — especially with China <a href="https://www.dia.mil/Portals/27/Documents/News/Military%20Power%20Publications/China_Military_Power_FINAL_5MB_20190103.pdf">developing weapons</a> that it can deploy in Earth’s orbit. The US President, Donald Trump, has already announced plans for the country to set up its own <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Trump-wants-to-create-the-first-US-military-branch-to-fight-in-space-heres-what-the-Space-Force-could-look-like/articleshow/63307230.cms">Space Force</a>. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (<a href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_167181.htm">NATO</a>), which includes the US and most European nations, has outlined its own strategy for operations in Earth’s orbit. Looking for ‘imminent threats’ IndSpaceEx will be conducted by tri-service integrated defence staff (IDS) on Thursday and Friday to determine ‘imminent threats’ that it could face in outer space in the background of China expanding its capabilities. The space defence exercise is only one part of the puzzle. India reportedly has plans to launch a new agency — the Defense Space Research Agency — to develop new weapons systems for outer space combat, according to <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ani/modi-govt-approves-new-agency-to-develop-space-warfare-weapon-systems-119061100627_1.html">ANI.</a> Other nations have similar reasons to have a contingency in place in case outerspace does ever end up becoming a battlefield. NATO, on the other hand, is not looking to start an arms race in outer space. “From the ability to navigate and track forces, to satellite communications, and detecting missile launches, our new policy will guide our approach to space, the opportunities and the challenges. This is not about militarizing space,” stated <a href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/opinions_167245.htm">NATO Secretary General</a> Jens Stoltenberg. Nonetheless, anti-satellite weapons tests and surveillance satellites are toeing the line of what could be considered an act of aggression. According to the<a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/613749/satellite-space-wars/"> MIT Tech Review,</a> it’s not uncommon to find examples of US satellites spying on other countries or China engaging in what looks like preparations for anti-satellite strikes. India next in line after NATO and the US to strategize for war in space

Technology from <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s decade-old scavenger satellite programme has been used in the development of new weapon systems powered by <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword>, according to a recently declassified document and scientists involved in the programme. The small satellites, including some lighter than 10kg, can grab onto uncooperative targets such as dead spacecraft tumbling in near-Earth orbit. A triple-eye sensor allows them to gauge the target's shape, relative speed and random rotation, with a single-axis robotic arm latching onto the target when it closes to within 20cm. The scavenger satellite then fires up thrusters and steers the junk so that it can burn up while plunging through the atmosphere. In military scenarios they could remain attached to debris to avoid being tracked from the ground. China has launched at least 10 experimental scavenger satellites over the past decade, but it is not the only country developing the technology. The European Space Agency has launched at least two satellites to learn how to catch a piece of junk in orbit using various methods, such as casting a net. And the American military has reportedly been developing technology using drifting debris as a tactical hideout for smaller satellites in <keyword id="1890444" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-warfare">space warfare</keyword>. Luo Jianjun, deputy director of the National Laboratory of Space Flight Dynamics Technology at Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xian, Shaanxi province, confirmed the existence of China's space scavenger programme last month. The programme was partially declassified recently, but Luo said most details remained secret because of the technology's potential military applications. "We prefer not to talk about it publicly," he said. China's first space laboratory, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2161321/chinas-first-space-station-tiangong-1-story-its-life-and-death">Tiangong-1</a>, spun out of control last year, triggering concerns about where it might land. It eventually burned up safely over the southern Pacific Ocean, a traditional spacecraft graveyard. Luo said easing such craft out of orbit could be one possible use of scavenger satellite technology in the future, but the programme was still at an experimental stage and there had been no large-scale deployment. According to a document declassified by the Chinese government in January, China has been testing scavenger satellite technology since 2008. "The project has not only found applications in more than 10 satellite models ... but also drones, smart weapons and robots," the document said, without elaborating. Chen Songlin, a spacecraft engineering scientist at the Harbin Institute of Technology in Heilongjiang province who was not involved in the programme, said hooking space junk was something that appeared easy but posed many challenges. If the target was large, its rotating momentum could break the satellite's arm, Chen said, adding that was probably why it only had one joint - sacrificing freedom of movement for strength. Catching a piece of junk rotating randomly would be more challenging than latching onto a still-functioning satellite, he said. "It requires some very good algorithms and delicate hardware to predict and decide where to grab," Chen said. At present, China's scavenger satellites can only bind to debris rotating no faster than 3.2 degrees a second, according to the document. The programme was led by Liu Fucheng, director of the Shanghai Aerospace Control Technology Institute, a subsidiary of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation responsible for developing guidance, navigation and control systems for tactical weapons, rockets and satellites. In a paper published in a Chinese research journal in 2015, Liu and colleagues proposed using a small satellite to approach a large communication or spy satellite in high geostationary orbit, snap some photos and then retreat immediately to avoid being caught. However, a senior astronomer at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Yunnan observatory in Kunming - one of the major ground facilities tracking and cataloguing satellites and debris orbiting the Earth for China's military and intelligence services - said unusual manoeuvres by small man-made satellites could be detected by a network of sensitive microwave radars and optical telescopes. "The sunlight reflected by the target alone can give us lots of information," said the researcher, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the technology. Almost every rocket launch was monitored by other countries and satellites entering orbit were carefully logged. "But the system is not perfect," the researcher said. "If a few dozen cube satellites are launched at once, some of them may fall out of radar. If they bind with debris, they may never be found."
