The authorities in Navi Mumbai have registered a case against six people, accused of defrauding job seekers of Rs 1.31 crore, according to officials from Kharghar police station. The accused allegedly promised clerical positions in the <keyword id="19909154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Railways" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> to 20 victims, collecting the funds through digital payments and cash between September 2022 and April 2023. <h2>The Scam: False promises of Railway jobs </h2> The six people, as per a PTI report, contacted the victims with guarantees of securing clerical roles in the Indian Railways. Over the course of several months, the accused collected a total of Rs 1.31 crore from the job aspirants, giving false assurances about placements. However, when the victims, all residents of the Kharghar area, began asking about their job status, the accused stopped responding and failed to return the money. One of the six accused people allegedly misappropriated the funds, using the collected money for personal purposes. It was reported that this person used the victims’ money to finance the construction of a house in Kolhapur, adding another layer of betrayal to the scam. <h2>Legal action and investigation </h2> Realising they had been duped, the victims filed a complaint with the Kharghar police. Following this, the police registered an FIR against the six accused under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention). The police are currently working to locate and apprehend the individuals involved. The case highlights the ongoing risk of job-related scams, where fraudsters prey on the aspirations of job seekers, especially in sectors like the Indian Railways, known for secure government jobs. However, industry experts remain cautiously optimistic about the sector's prospects. Suman Chowdhury, Chief Economist at Acuité Ratings &amp; Research, noted that while the October recovery is promising, several factors warrant careful monitoring. “The recovery in the PMI indices in October 2024 is promising for the second half of the fiscal after the dip in several high-frequency indicators in September 2024. Industrial and service activity has expectedly received a boost from the anticipated spike in consumption demand in Q3 FY25, driven by the festivities and the marriage season," she said. Chowdhury added that it will be crucial to monitor the sustainability of these PMI indices at these elevated levels, given the reported weakness in urban demand in Q2 as flagged by FMCG companies. She also noted that potential increases in wholesale and core retail inflation, combined with higher input costs and wage pressures, could delay expected interest rate cuts. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das also noted that inflation and CPI figures for October might be elevated, pushing ahead any chances of interest rate cuts in the near future. This paranoia isn’t totally unwarranted either. International studies have already shown that there is a high chance you might be discriminated against if your potential employers hear Indian, Chinese or Mexican accents in telephonic interviews, compared to British-accented candidates. And now, more research has just confirmed the same. Analysing data from 22 individual studies comprising 3,615 participants, the research team made two significant discoveries: applicants who communicate in nonstandard language are perceived as less competent compared to their standard language-speaking counterparts, even when qualifications are identical. Secondly, the study found that this perceived incompetence can markedly reduce the "hirability" of accented candidates, indicating a pervasive bias against nonstandard language speakers in the <keyword id="20026305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="recruitment-process" source="keywords">recruitment process</keyword>. Further, South-Asian, Indian and Mexican accents were treated more negatively than other accents in the US. Moreover, the study debunked the notion that professional human resources managers are immune to these biases, highlighting that both professionals and nonprofessionals alike exhibit similar discriminatory tendencies. Even when interviews are conducted by fellow nonstandard language speakers, the disadvantages persist, underscoring the deep-rooted nature of <keyword id="21448849" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="accent-bias" source="keywords">accent bias</keyword> in <keyword id="20900666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hiring-practices" source="keywords">hiring practices</keyword>.
