"I hope that the investments are all safe... it's too early for me to see what kind of an impact this situation in Bangladesh will have on our economy. I hope that the interim government will settle things sooner rather than later so that both the people of Bangladesh and India can get back to normalcy," she said. Earlier this week, Bangladesh plunged into a political crisis when Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister and fled the country. Soon after Parliament was dissolved leading to the creation of an interim government. The 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on Thursday took oath as the head of an interim government, replacing Sheikh Hasina who abruptly resigned and fled to India leaving the country in turmoil following deadly protests against her government over a controversial quota system in jobs. On Friday, Bangladesh's interim leader Yunus announced the portfolios of his 16-member council of advisors and named a former top diplomat to head the foreign ministry. The Nobel laureate's first task is to bring stability to Bangladesh after he responded to a call by student protesters for him to temporarily lead the country following weeks of deadly anti-government demonstrations against the government led by Sheikh Hasina.

US economy's fate hangs on jobs report as Fed decides how deep cuts will go

Crisis-hit <keyword id="19987725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet" source="keywords">SpiceJet</keyword> plans to hand out pink slips to at least 1,000 employees in the coming days as the airline works to significantly reduce costs and streamline operations of its depleted aircraft fleet, officials said on Monday. Faced with financial woes, legal battles and other headwinds, the no-frills carrier might ask more staff to leave as there is excess manpower now compared to the number of planes in service. A final decision on the quantum of layoffs is expected this week, one of the officials in the know said. When contacted, a SpiceJet spokesperson said the airline has initiated several measures, including manpower rationalisation, for achieving profitable growth but did not provide any numbers. The airline has around 9,000 employees and is now looking at reducing the strength by 10-15 per cent, the official said, adding that layoffs are necessary to reduce the overall costs and annual savings could be up to Rs 100 crore. A reduction of 15 per cent would mean around 1,350 people will lose their jobs. The second official in the know said that layoffs are expected across departments and the final list is being prepared. People from the management and consultancy are working on chalking out the contours of letting staff leave, and all the departments have been asked to give their inputs, the official added. There was no official comment from SpiceJet on the proposed job cuts. The second official explained that the airline has stopped operations on certain RCS (Regional Connectivity Scheme) routes and at those stations, there is excess manpower, especially staff with lower salaries. Relocating such people will be a challenge, the official noted. Currently, SpiceJet has a fleet of little over 30 aircraft apart from 10 planes that are on wet lease. "As part of our turnaround and cost-cutting strategy, following the recent fund infusion, SpiceJet has initiated several measures, including manpower rationalisation, aimed at achieving profitable growth and positioning ourselves to capitalise on the opportunities in the Indian aviation industry. "Through this initiative alone, we anticipate an annual saving of up to Rs 100 crore," the airline spokesperson said in a statement. During a meeting with the airline's senior officials last month, SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director <keyword id="19916067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ajay-singh" source="keywords">Ajay Singh</keyword> emphasised the importance of judicious spending and that he will personally oversee all major expenditures. The carrier will prioritise fleet upgrades, enhance on-time performance and cost-cutting measures will be implemented to streamline operations, according to an internal note last month. SpiceJet, which has undergone multiple ownership changes since inception and is currently helmed by Ajay Singh, is in the process of raising funds from various investors. On January 26, the carrier announced that it has received Rs 744 crore as the first tranche of the total Rs 2,250 crore proposed to be raised through the issuance of securities on a preferential basis. There were reports that there has been a delay in raising the requisite funds. The airline has also availed funds worth around Rs 1,000 crore under the government's Emergency <keyword id="20097541" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-line-guarantee-scheme" source="keywords">Credit Line Guarantee Scheme</keyword> (ECLGS) and Singh has committed to infuse Rs 500 crore. In recent times, SpiceJet also witnessed lessors taking legal recourse to take back their leased aircraft due to non-payment of dues. <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> is one of the world's fastest growing civil aviation markets and the domestic air traffic is on an upward trajectory. "I left after taking the order but couldn't get the petrol."In July 2022, a person was spotted riding a horse on the streets of Mumbai with a delivery bag belonging to Swiggy, Zomato's rival.Though social media users assumed it was a delivery driver, it later turned out to be a 17-year-old who had "borrowed" and "forgotten" to return the branded delivery bag, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.independent.co.uk/asia/india/swiggy-horse-mumbai-food-delivery-service-b2120254.html">according to the Independent.</a>

An Indian guy did his food-delivery job on horseback after a fuel crisis meant he couldn't get gas, video shows

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Federal data indicates wind-turbine technician is the fastest-growing job in the US.</li><li>The US and other countries are building more wind farms to tackle the climate crisis.</li></ul>Dakota Carter was in middle school when a new wind farm went up near his hometown of Delavan, Illinois.He was fascinated by the project's turbines, which can churn out enough power for 35,000 homes."I've always been passionate about the environment," Carter said. "So I thought a career in wind could actually make a difference."Now Carter, 29, is the operations site supervisor at that project, known as the Rail Splitter Wind Farm, owned by EDP Renewables North America. He started as an intern in 2017 before becoming a wind technician and then advancing over the past seven years.<div type="image" title="Dakota Carter's headshot" height="3000" width="2002" msid="111240018" hostid="261"></div>Carter entered the field at the right time. Federal data indicates <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/fastest-growing.htm">wind-turbine technician is the fastest-growing job</a> in the US, alongside nurse practitioner. While the absolute number of new jobs isn't that big, it represents a projected 45% increase between 2022 and 2032, more than any other occupation.The jobs website Indeed said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-jobs-career-grow-pay-well-high-salary-2024">postings for wind-turbine technicians grew by 30% in 2023</a>, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects about 1,800 openings each year over the next decade. <a target="_blank" href="https://gwec.net/global-wind-workforce-outlook-2023-2027-pr/">Industry groups have forecast</a> demand for about 240,000 new recruits by 2027 across Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, and the US.These countries want to build onshore and offshore wind farms rapidly so they can meet renewable-energy targets and mitigate the climate crisis. The International Energy Agency estimates that for the world to achieve net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050, about 17% more wind capacity must be added to power grids every year. The US is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61242">expected to add 11% capacity</a> from 2023 to 2025.<div type="image" title="Rail Splitter Wind Farm" height="1663" width="2500" msid="111240021" hostid="261"></div>The UK has long been a leader in wind but was recently surpassed by China, which accounted for half of all the new wind capacity added around the world in 2022. The US is further behind, but the industry got a boost from the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. The law authorized generous tax breaks for renewable-energy projects and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-administration-wants-boost-clean-energy-pay-through-tax-credits-2024-6">companies that pay their workers well</a>.In the US, the jobs are mostly onshore, in states like Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, and Colorado. The first large-scale offshore projects recently opened up off the coasts of New York and Massachusetts.<h2 id="17c8bcca-ed0f-4063-a0e8-917012b885ee">Last year the median pay for a wind-turbine technician was $61,770, but listings on Indeed averaged $80,100</h2>Harry Willats, an executive consultant at Darwin Recruitment who specializes in the wind sector, told Business Insider that the starting wage for a wind technician was typically $20 to $25 an hour. More-experienced technicians with specialized training could earn nearly $50 an hour. Offshore wind technicians can expect to earn an extra 30% to 40% compared to onshore workers. There are a lot of overtime opportunities as well. As technicians move into supervisor positions, they might get an annual salary.Federal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/installation-maintenance-and-repair/wind-turbine-technicians.htm">data indicates</a> the average hourly wage for the position in the US in 2023 was nearly $30 an hour, or $61,770 a year. But listings on Indeed averaged $80,100 a year.Willats said there are several pathways into the industry. Typically, people finish a one-year electrical certificate program at a technical or community college and then get hired as apprentices. Those interested in offshore wind need to complete Global Wind Organization courses in basic safety, first aid, and sea survival.There's a lot of on-the-job training. Wind technicians in the early stages of their careers might do scheduled maintenance and cleaning. As they advance, their jobs involve more troubleshooting and repairing, as well as managing crews. Willats said the highest-paid technicians tend to have specialized equipment certificates, such as those from Siemens Gamesa and GE.Carter earned a bachelor's degree in business management at Robert Morris University in Illinois. He realized he didn't want a desk job, so he returned to a local community college for a one-year sustainable-energy certificate program focused on solar, wind, and building systems before joining EDP Renewables.<h2 id="8e6fc2e3-c71a-47ee-8aa5-44702f8cb77e">Exposed to the elements</h2>"The biggest con is pretty obvious: the weather," Carter said. "You're working in the heat or the cold, and you're high up in the air. That can be pretty brutal. It's also a very physical job."But Carter said that working in renewable energy made him feel like he was leaving the world a better place. He also has work-life balance at Rail Splitter Wind Farm. EDP owns, operates, and repairs the site, meaning Carter doesn't have to spend time away from home. Technicians who work for a company that operates a lot of wind farms may have to travel from site to site for long stretches.Now that Carter is a supervisor, he spends more time talking with developers and people in the community about new projects the company is considering.

Around 3,0000 <keyword id="7803810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="non-medical-teachers" source="Orion">non-medical teachers</keyword> are on the 'verge of losing their jobs' after the new guidelines of the <keyword id="3514079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-medical-commission" source="Orion">National Medical Commission</keyword> (NMC) that has drastically reduced the post of non-medical MSc teachers in the medical colleges across the country. The National MSc Medical Teachers Association (NMMTA), the body representing non-medical teachers, has approached the Health Ministry seeking a rollback of the decision as nearly 3,000 non-medical teachers are feared to face a <keyword id="183112" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-crisis" source="Orion">job crisis</keyword> with the National Medical Commission reducing the posts for their recruitment. Seeking to revoke the guidelines, NMMTA said, in a letter submitted to the ministry, that the rollback will address the faculty crisis in the institutions and help the teachers. In the guidelines issued by the medical education regulator in October 2020, the permissible intake of non-medical faculty had come down from 30 per cent to 15 per cent in anatomy and physiology, from 50 per cent to 15 per cent in biochemistry, and from 30 per cent to 0 per cent in microbiology and pharmacology. The NMC has claimed that these guidelines would not affect the current faculties already in employment and would be applicable to new medical colleges, new appointments and colleges seeking MBBS seat enhancements. "The practice of involving non-doctors in medical education in non-clinical subjects is a global phenomenon. The erstwhile <keyword id="49468" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-council-of-india" source="Orion">Medical Council of India</keyword> (MCI) had stated that the 'intellectual cross-fertilisation with diverse intellectual streams is vital for medical education' with respect to the participation of non-medical M.Sc/Ph.D teachers in medical education. There is no need to divert away from this wisdom," NAMMTA told IANS. The practice of appointing teachers in the non-clinical subjects of the MBBS education started back in 1960, when the MCI allowed these teachers in the medical colleges to bridge the gap of shortage of doctors. As per the Teachers' Eligibility and Qualifications guidelines of the MCI, up to 30 per cent (50 per cent in Biochemistry) of teachers in the non-clinical subjects of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology &amp; Microbiology could be 'non-medical' subjected to unavailability of medical (MBBS/MD) qualified teachers. Sridhar Rao, president of the NMMTA, said while there has been an increase in MD seats in the non-clinical subjects, 40-50 per cent of them remain vacant each year, which would only mean that the faculty shortage is likely to continue. "The shortage are more pronounced in the colleges located in rural, remote or hilly areas, where the availability of medical teachers is generally poor. Introduction of the new MBBS curriculum isn't a concern as all teachers are being trained to implement it," Rao asserted. He also said that while rejecting a prior proposal to do away with the provision of appointing M.Sc./Ph.D. teachers, the Board of Governors in supersession of the MCI in January, 2020 had cited the shortage of faculty in the institutions. While talking to IANS, Rao said that as per the NMC Act, NMMTA had filed first appeal with the NMC, which was rejected without any consideration. A second appeal has been filed with the health ministry, which is under consideration. "We are not seeking a new policy direction that might warrant the constitution of a new committee. We seek the restoration of the erstwhile MCI rules. We are not even seeking reservation. We are asking for the restoration of what was snatched away from us," said NMMTA president, adding that, "it will create an artificial crisis of teachers and resultantly the medical education would become costlier in India." Experts believe that candidates can share layoff news on social media and also express their emotions. Posting on important platforms can actually help them land another job faster. “It’s also important to remember that while a layoff might feel personal, it’s not – instead, it’s a reflection that the company’s business outlook has changed. Experts also say that affected employees should understand that their layoff will not have a major impact on their resumes and while searching for another job. Business Insider India spoke to a few experts to understand how being laid off can impact one’s career. “The layoff doesn’t overshadow the skills or milestones you have achieved so far. Highlight the projects you have spearheaded or how you successfully handled a crisis faced by the client. Remember, showcasing your skills with relevant examples is the best way to go about it,” said Anil Agarwal, CEO &amp; co-founder, InCruiter. Employees should highlight their skillsets and milestones achieved to their new employer. They should also be candid about their layoff in interviews for a new job to the HR. “If your employer has released a public statement, then you can present the same to your interviewer. If not, you should find out the reason behind your layoff and also the number of your fellow employees who faced the same situation. However, one can mention it in the cover letters with an explanation and brief of your layoff, without complaining about your previous employer, he further said. Experts further advise the employees to learn new skills while searching for another job as it can help in boosting the resume.
