In the same quarter last year, it posted a consolidated net loss of ₹1,033 crore. This is Tata Motors’ second consecutive profitable quarter, after it posted losses for seven consecutive quarters since Q4 FY21. The profit this quarter is driven by growth in domestic sales and improved performance at its British subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover. Total revenue from operations grew 35% YoY to ₹1.06 lakh crore in the fourth quarter as against ₹78,439 crore in the year-ago period, it added. On a standalone basis, the automaker reported a net profit of ₹2,696 crore for the period under review as against ₹413 crore in the fourth quarter of 2022-22. For the year ended March 31, 2023, the auto major reported a consolidated net profit of ₹2,414 crore as compared with a net loss of ₹11,441 crore in FY22. Total consolidated revenue stood at ₹3.46 lakh crore in the period under review as against ₹2.78 lakh crore in 2021-22 fiscal. “The year ended on a strong note with all automotive verticals delivering robust performances leading to multiple all-time high achievements. Tata Motors posts net profit of ₹5,408 crore in Q4, beats estimates

Tata Motors’ robust numbers in the March quarter were aided by JLR’s performance – the UK-based luxury car maker posted free cash flow of £815 million during the quarter. JLR accounts for 80% of Tata Motors’ consolidated revenue, so its strong performance has a large impact on Tata Motors’ performance. In addition, Tata Motors’ domestic business also delivered an improvement in margins across segments, helping the company post its highest-ever consolidated revenue of ₹1.06 lakh crore in Q4, registering a growth of 35% on year. “Tata Motors executed a strong show across key verticals in Q4 FY23 with commercial vehicles earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margins crossing the 10% mark after 4 years and JLR delivering a strong £815 million free cash flow,” said the analysts at Motilal Oswal. Tata Motors declared a dividend of ₹2 per ordinary share, its first since FY16. The Indian business’ net debt stood at ₹6,200 crore in FY23, which is the lowest in 15 years. The street also celebrated its earnings as its shares rose by 4% hitting a fresh 52-week high of ₹537 a piece before closing at ₹531. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The JLR boost" comment="subhead" text="The JLR boost">The JLR boost</cmsannotation> Analysts expect Tata Motors to gain more momentum going forward, thanks to JLR’s healthy order book, softening commodity prices and sustained free cash flow generation. JLR’s volumes surged to 1.07 lakh units in Q4, rising by 20%. In a post-earnings call, the luxury car maker said that its current order book stands at 2 lakh units, and that the overall demand outlook remains healthy. Of this, 1.5 lakh orders are for high-margin cars like the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender. The company has planned a ramp up of capacities during FY24, with capital expenditure budgeted at £3 billion, up from £2.35 billion in FY23. Overall, JLR is targeting volumes of 4 lakh units in FY24 which is a growth of 25% when compared to FY23’s volumes of 3.21 lakh units. Thanks to improving margins and volumes, JLR is aiming to reduce its debt to £2 billion from £3 billion during FY24, with a target of becoming net debt free in FY25. The brokerage added that it expects the company’s revenue to grow at a 20.1% compounded annual growth rate over FY23-25. “It will benefit from the commercial vehicle upcycle and stable growth in passenger vehicles, company-specific volume/margin drivers, and a sharp improvement in free cash flow as well as reduction in net debt in both JLR and the India businesses,” the Motilal Oswal report said, explaining its bullish outlook. While the India CV (commercial vehicles) business will see a cyclical recovery, the India PV (passenger vehicles) business is seeing a structural recovery. JLR is also witnessing a cyclical recovery, supported by a favourable product mix,” said analysts at Motilal Oswal. “However, supply-side issues will delay the recovery process. While there will be no near-term catalysts from the JLR business, the recovery in the India business (~50% of the sum of the parts (SoTP) will continue,” added the report. Adding to the investor cheer, in March, the automaker sold 46,847 cars, overtaking rival Hyundai in the domestic passenger vehicle sales segment. In comparison, Hyundai sold 45,703 cars during the same month. Tata Motors registered a 27% on-year increase in passenger vehicles sales for March, far ahead of Hyundai, which registered a growth of 4.4%. The company is still confident that this too shall pass. “Underlying demand for JLR products remains strong and the company has proactively managed semiconductor supplies to maximise production of higher margin products,” Tata Motors said in an exchange filing. On a sequential basis, JLR is facing headwinds in both China and Europe, with sales down 6.9% and 6.8%, respectively. However, wholesale sales are chinning up with an increase of 8% in the same period. Bank of America gave the stock a neutral rating while observing that JLR’s volumes continue to disappoint, but the positive sales mix helped the company report a positive cash flow (£150 million). The easing of semiconductor shortage is visible in JLR’s output too. Production increased to 72,184 units, up 41% in the last three months. Its orderbook stood at 1,54,000 units, and the company’s cash flow was positive at £150 million (approx. ₹1,520 crore). CLSA, while stating that cash flow and profitability are expected to improve due to an increase in volumes, it maintained that the retail performance was ‘significantly’ lower. <table JLR sales are still down but analysts say Tata Motors is healing

On a sequential basis, the telco reported an 89% increase in net profit from ₹1,588 crore in Q3, higher than analyst <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/bharti-airtel-q4-preview-revenue-growth-to-be-modest-flat-arpu-eyed/articleshow/100253344.cms">estimates</a> of a 54% rise. Airtel’s revenue in the March quarter rose 14% YoY and 0.5% sequentially to ₹36,009 crore, in line with analyst estimates. For FY23, Airtel’s net profit nearly doubled to ₹8,346 crore, while revenue rose 19.4% to ₹1.39 lakh crore. Its spectrum usage charges fell 6% YoY to ₹2,828 crore while its overall expenses rose 12% to ₹17,312 crore in the March quarter. Airtel’s average revenue per user (ARPU) remained unchanged at ₹193 in Q4 when compared with the December quarter, while its 4G subscriber base increased to 224.1 million from 216.7 million in Q3. Overall, its 4G subscribers as a percentage of total subscribers stood at 67% in Q4, up from 62% in the same period a year ago. “Our focus on acquiring quality customers has resulted in 7.4 million new 4G customers, as we exit the quarter with an industry leading ARPU of ₹193,” said Gopal Vittal, managing director, Bharti Airtel. Also aiding Airtel’s ARPU growth in the March quarter was a 20.5% YoY increase in data consumption at 20.3GB per user per month. In terms of margins, too, Airtel reported a moderate uptick during the March quarter. The telco’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margins rose to 52.2% in Q4, from 50.76% a year ago. “A simple strategy and our relentless focus on execution has ensured that we close the year with market share gains across all businesses. Bharti Airtel Q4 net profit jumps 50% YoY to ₹3,006 crore, beats estimates

Tata Motors’ second-quarter earnings reflect the pain of weak demand for its high margin commercial vehicle category, despite robust growth in its passenger vehicle segment. The company attributes the weakness in demand to the coronavirus induced lockdown and restrictions in activities post that. This is the first full quarter of operations after India eased the lockdown restrictions. Tata Motors reported a consolidated net loss of ₹307.26 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The loss was 38% higher compared to the same quarter last year. The overall revenue declined 18% year-on-year to ₹53,530 crore during the same period. “Lockdowns have impacted the company operationally including on supply chain matters. The company is monitoring the situation closely taking into account directives from the Governments,” Tata Motors said in its quarterly report. “The PV segment has delivered stellar performance during the quarter and achieved EBITDA breakeven. CV margins improved sequentially but continue to be impacted by lower volumes and adverse mix on a y-o-y basis,” it added. <div type="image" title="Auto sales" msid="78891820" hostid="261"></div> JLR returns to profitability Despite the downturn in its domestic business, the company said its luxury car segment JLR returned to “profit with significant positive cash flow in the quarter”. Although the revenue from the luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Tata Motors’ British subsidiary, was down over 28.5%, it generated a £65 million profit before tax (PBT). Thierry Bolloré, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer said, “Although Jaguar Land Rover is not immune to the headwinds impacting the global automotive industry, it has the foundations in place to generate long-term sustainable profitability. I am confident these qualities and a strong product strategy with a focus on financial discipline will equip Jaguar Land Rover to address challenges in the period ahead.” Positive outlook ahead With the arrival of the festive season, Tata Motors is also betting on a sharp rise in sales figures. Despite concerns around the risk of the second wave of infection in many countries and other geopolitical risks, the company said it looked forward to a gradual pickup in demand and supply situation on the back of overall economic recovery expected in the second half. “In PV, we accelerated the momentum built in Q1FY21 and saw demand gradually emerge in select segments of CV. We remain hopeful for a full recovery in the CV industry by the end of this fiscal year aligned to the overall improvement in the economy,” said Guenter Butschek, CEO and MD, Tata Motors. Poco emerged as the biggest gainer, grabbing a 5% market share in Q2 2023, up from Q2 2022, an increase of 76.5%. OnePlus and Apple gained 61.1%, to grab 7.2% and 5.5% market share respectively. Apple also has the highest ASP among smartphone makers, at $929 (approx. ₹76,900). “In the upcoming festive season, the brands will try to spur consumer demand with affordable 5G launches, pre-booking offers, and loyalty/upgrade programs clubbed with festive discounts. Indian smartphone market sees a declines in Q2; Vivo in the lead

It’s British luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover’s sales seem to be stabilsing. At least, that’s what the street believes. After three years of having a ‘SELL’ rating, Tata Motors has finally been upgraded to ‘BUY’ rating by global broking firm CLSA. Tata Motors’ share price spiked over 13% after the company’s second-quarter earnings.

 Between July and September 2019, Tata Motors reported a net loss of ₹216.5 crore but that was still a massive improvement from the same quarter in the previous year⁠— when the loss was nearly five times more. For the quarter ending in September, Jaguar Land Rover retail sales nearly the same (down 0.7%) as a year earlier⁠— but the losses were less because the company had cut costs. Jaguar Land Rover saw a 24.3% jump in its sales in China, which is a big market for the company. “JLR’s volume is showing signs of bottoming-out on a low base in China and the ramp-up of the recently upgraded Evoque model—the start of defender sales in 4QFY20 should provide a further boost,” the CLSA report said. Earlier this year, global rating agencies Fitch Ratings and Moody’s both had downgraded Tata Motors with a negative outlook. In June 2019, Jaguar Land Rover retail sales was down by 9.6% as compared to the same month the previous year. In May 2019 too, the company had seen a 12% decrease as compared to the same month in the previous year. “Against challenging market headwinds, for the third consecutive month we have achieved double-digit growth in China, benefitting from our local turnaround plan and performing ahead of the broader market. We have also outperformed shrinking markets in other regions,” said Felix Brautigam, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Commercial Officer in a statement. JLR cheer is spreading The market excitement is visible not just with Tata Motors’ share price but that of many ancillary companies in the business. For the <keyword id="34478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-industry">auto industry</keyword> which has been hit by a slowdown for a year now, the comeback of Tata Motors and JLR is a positive sign for many others. Stocks like Bharat Forge, Motherson Sumi, and Exide, which make parts for automobiles, are also celebrating what they believe is a light at the end of the tunnel. Motherson Sumi, the largest manufacturer of automotive wiring harnesses and mirrors for passenger cars, too saw its stock trading at a 10% jump on Tuesday afternoon.

New entrants like MG Hector delivered 700 cars on Dhanteras while luxury car Mercedes Benz delivered 600 cars on the festive day. “Passenger vehicle sales, which were in the doldrums since late last year, have shown positive sales trajectory this year in comparison to the off-take witnessed during Dhanteras 2018”, reported IANS. "In terms of passenger vehicle sales, we have witnessed a similar off-take pattern to last year's Dhanteras day," Vinkesh Gulati, Vice President of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) told IANS.
