Homegrown Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) on Wednesday said it supports and welcomes the proposed implementation of the <keyword id="3880260" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-payments-council-of-india" source="Orion">National Payments Council of India</keyword>'s (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>) <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> market cap. With this, the UPI ecosystem in India will see further growth in a democratised manner, encouraging wider participation and ending the market concentration risk, the company said in a statement. PPBL, which owns <keyword id="6076084" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-upi" source="Orion">Paytm UPI</keyword>, is an NPCI-certified PSP (Payment Service Provider) and Issuer Bank for UPI transactions, and not a Third Party Application Provider (TPAP) and won't come under the purview of NPCI's market cap. The Bank is an Issuer and <keyword id="15597664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="psp-bank" source="Orion">PSP Bank</keyword> in itself along with being an acquirer of UPI transactions on its own platform and serves the customer end-to-end in a transaction. The Bank continues to lead UPI payments as the largest beneficiary bank and a leading remitter bank. According to the latest report by NPCI, as a beneficiary bank, PPBL has registered over 1,614 million transactions and as a remitter bank, it registered more than 362 million transactions in October 2022. "We believe the proposed implementation of UPI market capping will be hugely beneficial for the UPI ecosystem. This move by the NPCI will bolster the growth of digital payments and democratize it for the citizens, ending market concentration risk. With this, UPI will become even more accessible and enable further digital adoption," a Paytm Payments Bank spokesperson told IANS. The bank is now enabling users to make transactions across all UPI payment apps with just the mobile number, and even if it is not registered with Paytm. With this, users can receive and send money instantly to any mobile number with a registered UPI ID across platforms using the Paytm app. This further deepens Unified Payments Interface (UPI) interoperability and roots for the adoption of mobile payments. Paytm Payments Bank supports UPI market cap, maintains leadership as PSP & Issuer Bank

WhatsApp made the announcement on its blog after <keyword id="193629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI">NPCI</keyword> that operates the UPI payment infrastructure, gave its go-ahead to WhatsApp for its payment feature using UPI. “WhatsApp designed our payments feature in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) using the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), an India-first, real-time payment system that enables transactions with over 160 supported banks. We’re excited to join India’s campaign to increase the ease and use of digital payments, which is helping expand financial inclusion in India,” read its statement. WhatsApp's payment feature has been rolled out in 10 Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp. To send money on WhatsApp in India, one needs to have a bank account and debit card in India. WhatsApp will send instructions to banks that initiate the transfer of money via UPI between sender and receiver bank accounts. “We’re delighted to be working with five leading banks in India: ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank. People can send money on WhatsApp to anyone using a UPI supported app,” read the statement. Payments on WhatsApp will be available for people on the latest version of the iPhone and Android app.

The telecom sector's Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) when adjusted for inflation is still 17 per cent below pre-Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> launch. "...we expect <keyword id="6406583" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bharti" source="Orion">Bharti</keyword> (Airtel) to lead tariff hikes to ARPU of Rs 236 by FY25, while Bharti targets Rs 300 ARPU", leading brokerage <keyword id="6397676" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="clsa" source="Orion">CLSA</keyword> said in its report on the telecom sector. According to CLSA's outlook, 2023 will have three trends to watch out for when it comes to India's mobile market. Among them will be 5G rollouts and monetisation led by top-end subscribers. "We see multiple events to watch, led by likely tariff hikes and <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword>'s (RJio) widely-anticipated IPO," it said. Private networks, if allowed, may eat into 5G operators' enterprise services opportunity. India's mobile sector revenue, after rising 14 per cent in 2022, should grow again in 2023 led by tariff hikes, rising data penetration and usage. CLSA expects that Bharti (Airtel) will possibly lead tariff hikes, with <keyword id="634808" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vil" source="Orion">VIL</keyword> (Vodafone Idea Ltd) and Reliance Jio likely to follow. VIL's financial crisis has not been averted, with delays in fund raising and pending conversion of four years' interest on spectrum and AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) payments into equity for government. With decline in VIL's share, Bharti and Jio together control 77 per cent and should continue to gain share, the report said. "VIL fund raising is critical for 4G capex and 5G rollout while delays could trigger further share loss, which would be gains for RJio and Bharti which will ramp up 5G rollouts in 2023," it added. Jio and Bharti 5G rollout will coincide with growing subscriber realisations and market share gains. "We forecast rising ARPU and data penetration to drive a 14 per cent CAGR in sector revenue to Rs 2,84,600 crore (USD 36 billion) by FY25," it said. As per the report, the new telecom bill will be "positive" for VIL. "VIL, which is currently in a four-year moratorium on government dues, could gain from this regulatory bill, which could have options of write-offs," the report said.
