Foreign investors have withdrawn nearly Rs 20,000 crore from Indian stock markets in just five trading days (November 4–8), continuing a trend of large-scale selling that began last month. Experts say investors are now moving their money to China, largely due to the high valuations presently prevailing in Indian markets.<br /><br />In early November, FPIs have offloaded as much as Rs 19,994 crore in Indian markets. The month prior, i.e., October, was one of the worst months in terms of foreign outflows, with FPIs making a net withdrawal of Rs 94,017 crore. Before this, Indian markets faced such a situation during the pandemic, when FPIs withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020.<br /><br /><h2>Why Are Investors Leaving?<br /></h2>According to Himanshu Srivastava of Morningstar Investment Research India, two main factors are driving this exodus. First is China's renewed appeal due to lower stock valuations and new economic stimulus measures. In a bid to nudge the domestic economy and bail state governments, China recently approved a 10-trillion yuan (US $1.4 trillion) package. Per reports, approximately 60% of this stimulus focuses on allowing local governments to refinance the mountain of debt on them. <br /><br />Srivastava explains foreign investors are also flocking to US dollar and Treasury yields, which have appreciated significantly in the recent past, leading FPIs to anticipate a stronger US economy going ahead. <br /><br />Moreover, high valuations in Indian markets are discouraging foreign investors from putting more money in the economy. As a result, over the past week, the selling pressure eroded Rs 74,563 crore in market value for Reliance Industries, while Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank lost Rs 26,274 crore and Rs 22,254 crore, respectively. The combined market valuation of six of the top 10 most-valued firms dipped by Rs 1,55,721.12 crore last week.<br /><h2><br />Silver linings</h2>Despite the ongoing outflux of funds since last month, November also saw unprecedented applications of about 40–50 new FPI registrations, which are eyeing to enter the Indian market. This was due to markets SEBIs recent relaxation to NRIs, permitting them to participate up to 100% and announcing measures for ease of entry and operations in India. <br /><br />On the other hand, FPIs invested Rs 599 crore in the debt general limit and Rs 2,896 crore in the debt voluntary retention route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs have invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market. <li class="whitespace-normal break-words"></li>Going ahead, investors will be looking for certain macroeconomic cues, which include corporate earnings reports, India's inflation (CPI) and industrial production (IIP) data on November 12, the US inflation report on November 13, and wholesale price index (WPI) data on November 14. <br />

<keyword id="19895040" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="real-estate" source="keywords">Real estate</keyword> was India's asset of choice for investment in the first half of 2024, noted a recent FICCI-ANAROCK report. About 59% of the 7,615 respondents across 14 Indian cities expressed their desire to invest in real estate. Out of these, 67% of respondents wanted to buy a house to live in it, while the remaining 33% viewed it as an investment.<br /><br />Out of this 33%, the majority (57%) wanted to earn rental yields from the same, while another 20% planned to sell their property after its price has appreciated significantly. The remaining 23% viewed real estate as an asset for securing their future.<br /><br />Even for millennials, buying a house featured at the top of their priorities. 66% of millennials and 41% of generation X respondents highlighted that they intended to utilize their investment gains to buy a house in the future.<br /><br />What was also notable was the significant decline in demand for ready-to-move in units and a corresponding rise in demand for under-construction units. During the first half of 2024, for every 20 individuals who preferred a ready-to-move-in house, 25 respondents chose a new launch or under-construction property. This ratio was at 32:21 in the first half of 2021.<br /><br />Some of the reasons why over 53% of homebuyers are dissatisfied with the current available options when it comes to <keyword id="20254620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="affordable-housing" source="keywords">affordable housing</keyword> are location accessibility (92%), poor quality construction design (84%), and small unit sizes (68%). Even the supply in the affordable housing category across the top 7 Indian cities has considerably shrunk over the last 3 years, from 26% in 2021 to just 17% as of September 2024.<br /><br />However, this differed based on the city. While over 50% of respondents chose 3BHK apartments in cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, and Bengaluru, over 40% preferred a 2BHK in other metros like Kolkata.<br />Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune. <br /><br />However, that does not mean that there is little demand for luxury homes. 28% of respondents preferred buying a house between the range of Rs 90 lakh and Rs 1.5 crore. This was a mere 18% prior to the pandemic. However, the most common budget range for houses remained between Rs 45-90 lakh, with 35% of respondents choosing the same.<br /><br />As far as under-construction properties are concerned, a staggering 98% of respondents prefer timely project completion, 93% choose improved construction quality, and 72% prefer a well-lit, ventilated home. <br /><br />The report further noted that Indians are increasingly inclined towards larger, more luxurious living spaces. 3BHKs and apartments remained the most preferred choice of residence and property type, with 51% and 58% of respondents opting for them, respectively. Residential plots were also seen gaining traction, particularly in southern India, with 30% of respondents in Chennai, 29% in Bengaluru, and 27% in Hyderabad preferring them.<br /><br /><keyword id="21483825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="home-loan-interest-rates" source="keywords">Home loan interest rates</keyword> also significantly influenced home buying decisions. If the rates are below 8.5%, it would have minimal impact on buying decisions for around 71% of respondents. However, interest rates exceeding 9% would significantly impact 87% of buyers.<br /><br />With the RBI currently deciding to hold off on slashing interest rates in October for the 10th consecutive time, home loan rates are likely to stay elevated in the future. Experts estimate that the RBI will start cutting interest rates early next year.<br /><br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Using a 401(k) can boost investment portfolios by 23%, per Charles Schwab study.</li><li>The study compared 401(k) and taxable accounts over 20 years with an 8% annual return.</li></ul><p>Nothing is less exciting than thinking about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/taxes">taxes</a>, especially when the bill is coming due.</p><p>And once you cross into the first quarter of the year, little can be done to reduce your tax liability, especially if you're a W2 employee.</p><p>That's why thinking about deferral strategies is a great way to reduce how much you pay in taxes and increase your net worth in the long term. But to maximize your outcome, you have to start with a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-401k">401(k)</a> or a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-ira">Traditional IRA</a>, according to a recent simulated study by Charles Schwab. The study showed how a 401(k) could increase an investment portfolio's value by 23%.</p><p>The study, which was backtested over 20 years, compared two investors, one who used a taxable brokerage account versus one who used a 401(k). At an 8% annual return, it found that the latter finished with a value of $177,116 compared to the taxable account at $144,547. Based on this scenario, it assumed that someone allocating funds after tax in a 24% bracket would have a principal investment of $38,000 compared to $50,000. It also assumed taxable events on a turnover rate every five years and on 2% qualified income dividends and 6% long-term capital gains.</p><div type="image" title="Chart showing increased portfolio value with tax-deferred account." height="1064" width="1846" msid="114955475" hostid="261" sizebytes="34694"></div><p>In a scenario where an investor uses a taxable account but doesn't turnover or realize gains every five years, meaning taxable events are only placed on the 2% dividends, the outcome would lead to an ending value of $152,392.</p><p>One caveat is that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-loopholes-to-reduce-or-avoid-capital-gains-taxes-2024-10">tax-deferred accounts</a> don't take into account every phase of where taxation can occur along the investment process, says Rob Williams, managing director of financial planning at Charles Schwab. The first point is when money is earned and before it's invested. The second is when income and dividend payments are earned along the way. The third point is once gains are realized. The first two taxation points are covered. The last phase isn't. For this process, other accounts, such as Roth IRAs for after-tax contributions allow gains to grow tax-free.</p><p>Roth IRAs could come in handy in retirement during years when you have a higher withdrawal rate and, in turn, fund yourself in a higher tax bracket.</p><h2 id="bd273b03-5ffe-4b6d-8acc-d2373d85fc37">Other tax tips</h2><p>Another option people don't think about as much is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-health-savings-account-retirement-tool-investing-wealth-2024-10">health savings account</a>, which is unique, Williams noted. You have to qualify for those with an employer that provides it through a health insurance policy with a high deductible plan. But they are a nice additional tool that investors can use to contribute from their paycheck, he added.</p><p>It's contributed pre-tax. And if the money isn't used for healthcare costs, it can be saved and invested in that health savings account and grow tax-free. It's tax deferral and tax avoidance, he noted.</p><p>"For a health savings account, that's powerful," Williams said. "We call that a triple tax exemption. You get no taxes when you put the money in and no taxes on any growth or capital gains in the fund. And then when you take it out, you don't have any taxes as well."</p><p>Taxable brokerage or investment accounts are still useful because they allow you to withdraw money before retirement. This is especially great in the event you need to make a big purchase. But when using these accounts, investors should consider the assets they're buying. For example, exchange-traded funds have less tax drag than mutual funds that have higher turnover and, in turn, more taxable events, Williams noted.</p><p>"Any investment or mutual fund that generates a fair amount of investment income, whether it's interest or dividends, do not tend to be very tax efficient," Williams said.</p><p>This also means considering how funds distribute gains, such as whether they are qualified or ordinary dividends. The latter is taxed at an investor's tax rate and depending on what margin that's in, it may not be as advantageous as a qualified dividend.</p>

India's investment ecosystem is undergoing a seismic shift, with index investing gaining unprecedented traction among investors, according to a report by Motilal Oswal.<br /><br />The younger generation, including Gen Z and Millennials, shows a stronger inclination towards index funds as compared to older investors. They also prefer index funds over ETFs for better returns and liquidity. A recent report by Axis AMC also highlighted the growing appetite for ETFs, which witnessed net sales of Rs 15,403 crore in October 2024.<br /><br />While 46% of younger investors favor index funds, only 35% of Gen X and Boomers do so. Millennials and Gen X investors also have a keen interest in factor or smart beta funds, reflecting their appetite for innovative, albeit aggressive investment strategies.<br /><br />Passive funds have become a core component of investor portfolios, with 80% of investors increasing their allocation to these funds in 2024, compared to 53% last year. The Axis report echoed similar sentiments, noting that net sales in the passive category inched up to Rs 8,025 crore in October 2024. <br /><br /> The combined assets under management (AUM) of passive funds have surged from Rs 7 lakh crore in September 2023 to over Rs 11 lakh crore by September 2024—a 1.5x growth in just one year.<br /><br /> The survey also noted a growing popularity of ETFs, with 57% of respondents investing in them, up from 41% in 2023. Of these, 26% invest solely in ETFs, while 31% have diversified between ETFs and index funds.<br /><br />This rising preference is matched by a commitment to long-term investment. A significant 81% of investors plan to hold their passive investments for over three years, highlighting sustained confidence in the growth potential of these funds. Sectoral indices like Nifty IT and Nifty Bank dominate as the top choice for passive fund investors, selected by 67% of respondents. Benchmark indices such as the Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 follow closely, preferred by 61% of investors.<br /><br />A recent, similar report by stock broker Angel One also throws a spotlight on how young India plans and prefers mutual funds when it comes to savings and investments. The report, titled "Young Indians' Saving Habits Outlook 2024," compiled by Fin One, stated that 45% of respondents aged 22-35 have made it a point to save up some of their savings in mutual funds. A year ago, this figure stood at just 32%. <br /><br />Most of these investors make their way into mutual funds via SIPs, or systematic investment plans. 52% of respondents in the age cohort of 22-35 are now using SIPs to invest in mutual funds, up from 44% in the previous year.<br /><br />As for what was the driving factor behind beginning their investment journey, 42% underlined the past performance of funds, while 38% noted that advice from financial advisors remained a key consideration. 38% of young Indians are now increasingly focusing on building an emergency corpus, compared to 28% the year before. This shift underscores the drastic change in financial sensibilities brought forth by the pandemic and the consequent desire for greater financial resilience. In fact, approximately 4 out of every 5 surveyed investors maintained a dedicated, separate savings account.<br /><br />Out of the 1,650 individuals studied under the FinOne survey, a staggering majority made their first foray into the stock market in their early twenties. Nearly 2 in every 5 investors pick stock as their preferred choice of investment, followed by mutual funds and then savings bank accounts. While 45% of those surveyed picked stocks as their chosen investment avenue, 20% preferred mutual funds, and 15% wanted to keep their money in a savings bank account.<br />

Gen Z and Millennials prefer stocks and mutual funds; index funds trump over ETFs, say recent reports

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Chris Mott, a veteran, decided to retire at 57 after he became unemployed and couldn't find a job.</li><li>Mott and his wife sold their California home, downsized, and invested in a travel trailer.</li></ul><p>I'm a veteran who has worked for various organizations and government jobs, including, at times, building and running companies. Like most people, I didn't really start <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/planned-retirement-until-discovered-fire-2024-04">thinking about retirement</a> until I was past my mid-40s. My plan was to work until I was 65 or 70, but my wife apparently had a different idea.</p><p>When I became unemployed in 2022, my wife saw this as an opportunity for us to retire and live on the road full time. This had been her dream since we bought a small camping trailer in 2002. We spent many summers and holidays <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-plan-perfect-american-road-trip-across-southwest-region">traveling the Western United States</a> and Canada with our son.</p><p>At 57, I was too young to start <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-social-security">drawing from Social Security</a> or our retirement accounts, so our finances were at the forefront of my mind, but I decided we could make her dream a reality. Almost a year later, my portfolio has generated almost as much as I made at my last job.</p><p>Here's how I managed my early retirement.</p><h2 id="a9c4091b-1102-4746-b4f1-8c7cb984913a">I didn't realize my life was about to change</h2><p>We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tarek-el-moussa-says-he-cant-make-money-on-california-starter-homes-2024-2">owned a house in California</a> on a large lot in the Orange County city of Yorba Linda. When my granddaughter was just a year old, my wife went up to Vancouver, Washington, for a visit by herself. A few days into that trip, my daughter-in-law sent me some photos of my wife with the baby, and she was smiling like I'd not seen her smile in a very long time. I knew then that my life was about to change. After several months of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/should-you-sell-your-house-now-bank-of-america-2024-7">getting the house ready</a> to show, we got the house listed and in escrow within a week. Things were really starting to move fast.</p><p>Somewhere in the middle of all of this, my mother-in-law became gravely ill and passed. Then my employers had buyer's remorse on the remote-work arrangement, and I ended up unemployed.</p><h2 id="8480490b-cd82-4817-8cc9-cc2067e79c2d">We sold our home, and I created a budget for our travels</h2><p>After we settled my mother-in-law's estate with my wife's siblings and closed escrow on our Orange County home, I added those proceeds to our <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/best-ira-accounts">other savings and IRAs</a>. Most of our money is professionally managed, but I have a small amount in a self-directed account plus a savings account.</p><p>We spent $200,000 buying a new 30-foot Grand Design fifth-wheel trailer and a Dodge Ram 2500 truck to tow it. We have downsized from a 2,400-square-foot house on ¾ acres to a 290-square-foot trailer. We have 20 years of camping experience, so I was able to create an all-inclusive budget. Even costs like using a coin laundry every few weeks or paying for a campground shower. We also pay for Starlink internet, so we can always stay connected.</p><p>With no house or vehicle payments, utilities, or property taxes, our investment income exceeds our budgeted monthly living expenses. So we are living off the income, not the principal.</p><h2 id="3c18eb25-9e36-407e-9a0e-de34622aaab6">Paying For Retirement</h2><p>The one thing I didn't want to do in retirement was become a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/best-stock-trading-apps">full time investment broker</a>, so I hired one. The bulk of our investments are professionally managed in various municipal bonds and a mix of moderate-growth equities. My goal for the portfolio was income and asset retention. It costs about $6,000 a year in brokerage fees but is worth not having to personally manage all those transactions.</p><p>Much of the income from this portfolio is non-taxable, which helps our bottom line. Outside of that, we have our IRAs, savings accounts, and a small <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/investment-portfolio">self-directed investment portfolio</a>.</p><p>I communicate regularly with my broker and keep a close watch on everything. I've set up automatic monthly disbursements from the portfolios sufficient to cover our living expenses. I even make a few bucks with my writing. It's not a fortune, but we live comfortably.</p><p>Eventually, we'll have to start thinking about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/ira-early-withdrawal-without-penalty">taking draws from our IRAs</a> and when to apply for Social Security. But we've got a few years for that.</p><h2 id="33429322-fea5-4e8f-bef5-d911e60c8658">Life Is What You Make It</h2><p>Looking back, I wish I'd started sooner, but I was fortunate. Despite my late start at planning for retirement, I ended up OK.</p><p>Every morning when I wake up, I open the shade next to my bed. Partly to see the morning light and partly to remember where I am. It changes all the time. We <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/van-life-road-trip-convinced-nomadic-lifestyle-is-for-me-2024-3">travel from place to place</a>, one campground to the next. We hike in new places, try local cuisine, and go to museums, exhibits, national monuments, parks, and special events like the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Lake Havasu.
