<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>In your 30s, you've (hopefully) started to check off important financial milestones: You're <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sallie-krawcheck-bad-money-advice-money-mistake-2016-11" target="_blank">paying down debt</a>, you have an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-build-an-emergency-fund-2016-1" target="_blank">emergency fund</a>, and you're <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/my-husbands-401k-balance-changed-the-way-i-save-money-2016-6" target="_blank">making monthly contributions to your 401(k)</a>.And if you haven't already, you also want to start investing. But how much should you contribute?The short answer: Anything you can, according to Sallie Krawcheck, a former Wall Street executive and founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.ellevest.com/">Ellevest</a>.But if you're waiting until your 30s to start investing, you're too late."Just do it, just do it, just do it!" Krawcheck told Business Insider. "Because it's costing you a fortune, especially women," she added, noting that women are less likely to invest. "It costs women tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of dollars over the course of their lives."Contrary to the advice that you should wait until you have a substantial amount to invest, Krawcheck recommends that everyone start in their 20s, even if you only have $50 or $100 to put in, because it will start compounding right away."Over time [you will] have a return on that money you put in, and then you'll earn a return on that return, and then you'll earn a return on that return on that return," Krawcheck explains.She's referring to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-compound-interest-2016-3">compound interest</a>, which is when the interest earned on an investment earns interest on itself. Here's how much you should be investing by your 30s, according to former Wall Street executive Sallie Krawcheck 

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1268253" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Robinhood">Robinhood</keyword>'s pending IPO could fetch as much as $30 billion or more, said S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. </li><li>The analysis was made in part by looking at metrics from IPOs of TD Ameritrade and E-Trade. </li><li>Robinhood still bears a "significant amount of headline and regulatory risk", says S&amp;P Global. </li></ul>Robinhood is on course to go public and its IPO could be valued at $30 billion or beyond, with S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence making that assessment in part on valuations from competitors when their respective shares began trading. Robinhood, whose platforms allow users to trade stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies and gold, plans to list on Nasdaq, according to <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001783879/000162828021013318/robinhoods-1.htm">IPO documents</a> filed last week with the Securities and Exchange Commission. With the filing, "suddenly a rumored $20 billion valuation does not seem out of the question. It might even be a conservative estimate," Tom Mason, a research analyst at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence focused on the financial tech sector, said in a note published Tuesday. "We think Robinhood will have a strong IPO showing and should be valued at upwards of $20 billion in market capitalization, if not $30 billion." S&amp;P Global said the last private post-money valuation in January was $18.2 billion. The firm said a $30 billion or more market cap for Robinhood could be possible if it's based on valuations from rivals in the online brokerage space such as <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/schw-stock">Charles Schwab</a>, E-Trade Financial and TD Ameritrade when they were growth stocks upon their trading debuts. "Based on their ratios of market cap-to-last-12-months revenues in the late 1990s, Robinhood could easily command a $20 billion valuation," wrote Mason. TD Ameritrade's quarterly ratio was the highest of the three brokers, peaking at 26.4 times last 12-months-revenues in the second quarter of 1999. A $35 billion valuation for Robinhood could be possible based on TD Ameritrade's 26.4x ratio and Robinhood's $1.35 billion in total net revenues in the four quarters that ended in March, the report said. "Of course, those lofty valuations in the late 1990s also preceded the dot-com market crash," wrote Mason. Robinhood's IPO is highly anticipated in the wake of the company's emergence as a leading platform choice for retail investors, particularly those who have made it their mission to battle hedge funds seeking to make money off the decline in shares of so-called <keyword id="10688429" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="meme-stocks">meme stocks</keyword> such as <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gme-stock">GameStop</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amc-stock">AMC Entertainment</a>. S&amp;P Global Intelligence pointed to a <a href="https://qz.com/1971633/robinhood-pre-ipo-secondary-shares-signal-40-billion-valuation/">Quartz article in February</a> that said Robinhood's shares were being valued at $40 billion in private secondary <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword>."That still seems on the high side, based on historical comparisons, but perhaps within the realm of possibility, given Robinhood's rapid growth in users and revenues," said Mason. Robinhood in its IPO prospectus said monthly active users <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/robinhood-ipo-active-users-added-gamestop-trading-halt-meme-stocks-2021-7">surged by 6 million</a> in the first three months of this year, to 17.7 million, a jump of 51% from the end of December 2020. The expansion came even as Robinhood <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gamestop-stock-trading-robinhood-users-critics-revolt-2021-1?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingestgest">users expressed outraged</a> in January at the company's decision to halt buying of shares of <keyword id="363661" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="GameStop">GameStop</keyword> and other meme stocks during a massive rally led by retail investors active on Reddit and other social media sites. "Robinhood bears a significant amount of headline and regulatory risk, given its missteps at times around disclosures and financial regulations, but it continues to have tremendous growth potential, in our view," Mason wrote. "It has yet to offer lucrative ancillary services like wealth management, as its incumbent competitors do. If it adds more revenue streams, it will be an even more formidable force to be reckoned with."

Robinhood's upcoming IPO could value the popular retail-investing app at $30 billion or more, S&P analysts say

Roberge says neither of those arguments hold water.</li><li>If you buy a home in your 20s or 30s, you're likely building less equity than you think, he writes.</li></ul>This post was originally published on <a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/building-house-equity/">Beyond Your Hammock</a>.One of the big arguments for home ownership or buying a house goes something like this:"When you rent, you're just throwing money away because you're not building house equity. With your own home, though, that's exactly what happens when you pay your mortgage: You're building equity."At first glance, this seems like it could make sense. After all, when you end your lease and move to a new place as a renter, that's sort of it. You don't get to sell your home and walk away with the money you earned from the equity in the property.When you own and want to move on, though, you do get to sell the house and exchange that equity for cash.That's the idea, anyway. But the thing is, if you buy a home in your 20s or 30s, you're likely building less equity than you think.<h2>How much house equity you're actually building</h2>You can run the numbers to see the reality of the situation before you buy.Take a look at the amount of house equity you build in seven years <a href="https://www.bankrate.com/%E2%80%A6/mor%E2%80%A6/amortization-calculator.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">using this calculator from Bankrate</a>. Let's assume you plan to buy a $600,000 home with a 20% down payment. You get approved for a 30-year mortgage with a 4.5% interest rate.(Add these numbers to the calculator if you want to follow along with this example.)Assuming a flat market, you'll find that you would only build $62,274 in equity between August 2018 to July 2025. That represents the seven to eight-year <a href="https://themortgagereports.com/26307/homebuyer-tenure-how-long-are-people-staying-in-their-houses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average time frame that most people own a home</a> before they sell and buy another.Your gain of $62,274 in house equity would mean your mortgage would move from $480,000 to $417,726 - but you would pay a whopping $204,295 total, thanks to interest.And when you include closing costs at 3% of the home's value, that means you'll sink another $18,000 into the deal - assuming you didn't roll the closing costs into the mortgage as many do, which would make it even worse thanks to the interest on the loan.At this point, you would have exchanged $222,295 for a little over $60,000 worth of equity.This doesn't even account for taxes, insurance, or the ongoing cost of upkeep for your home. <a href="https://www.thebalance.com/home-maintenance-budget-453820" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maintenance and repairs could run between 1%</a> and 4% of your home's value per year, depending on the age of the home and where you live.Upkeep alone is usually enough to offset the "house equity building" aspect of home ownership over the average holding period of about eight years.<h2>'Building house equity' alone is not a strong enough argument for buying a home</h2>That short period of time you're likely to stay in a house makes the home ownership argument a poor one for many.Yes, you will most likely build equity eventually. But that requires you to stay put in the same home, in the same town, in the same community, for decades.Most 20-, 30-, and 40-somethings who are ambitious, have big goals and dreams with <a href="https://www.kiplinger.com/article/real-estate/T012-C032-S014-buying-a-home-could-be-a-bad-career-move.html">serious career plans can't commit to settling down in a single spot</a> for the next 20 years.There are, of course, exceptions. There always are.<a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/timing-the-market-doesnt-work/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You could get lucky with market timing</a> and buy during a buyer's market to score an amazing deal and sell during a seller's market when buyers are going crazy with bidding wars to pay you $100,000 more than what your home is worth.That's possible, but not probable - and you don't want to rely on luck, chance or timing to build your financial plan.You can't make a broad statement about owning always being a better option than renting, or that renting always equates to throwing money away.It's just not true - and in many real-life scenarios, the opposite is actually true: Owning a home may be a bigger waste of your cash than using some of your money to pay rent.<h2>If you want to buy a house, buy a house - but don't call it an investment</h2>All this being said, I'm not saying "don't buy a house."Seriously!If you want to buy a house, set your goal and get after it. Many of my clients are already homeowners; others come to me looking for help about how to organize their finances so they can make their dream of home ownership a reality.(And not only do I have home-buying, home-owning clients - but I also have clients who work as real estate agents.)I would never tell you buying a house is always a bad choice. But I will urge you to question your assumptions and take the time to look at the numbers as they relate to your situation.<a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/client-services/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">These are the kinds of projections and scenarios we run for clients at Beyond Your Hammock</a>- and this is what it means to make smarter money decisions. Rarely are you <a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/biggest-investment-temptation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">making an investment that will provide a sizable return</a>. In fact, the real return on single-family homes (after inflation) averages 1% or less.Which could be perfectly okay. Again, think of home ownership as a lifestyle choice - and if home ownership and all that goes with it fits the lifestyle you want, then we can make a plan to get your finances to a place where it's feasible to buy.<h2>There is no shame in renting (especially when you know you're not missing out on that much house equity, anyway)</h2>But, what if your lifestyle doesn't require you to buy?What if you're like me and my wife, Kali, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-not-to-buy-a-home-financial-planner-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">who actually don't want to buy</a> (now) because we're not interested in the upkeep and the maintenance and the time homeowners must devote to their properties?What if you love your current rental and it makes you happy? What if you love the amenities or the community and the location and couldn't dream of leaving for anything else?Well, keep renting or stay in your current home. Period. There is absolutely no shame in renting (nor does buying a house make you magically happier or more successful).There is so much pressure from society, family and friends to buy a house - so much that it can get discouraging when you don't own your own property.But there's good news for you: As long as you save a large percentage of your income (I usually recommend <a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/savings-rate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saving between 20 and 30 percent of your gross income</a>) and pay down debt efficiently, it doesn't really matter if you rent or own.There's another argument out there that goes right along with the building house equity rationale for buying, and it's the "forced savings" argument. Some people say that buying a house is a way to create forced savings - and sure, it can be.… assuming you need someone to force you to save.If you're like most of my clients, <a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/financial-goals-easy-strategy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">you already have the desire and motivation to save</a>. You have a good handle on your cash flow and understand where your money goes each month.The question isn't "Should I save?" or "How?" but "<a href="https://beyondyourhammock.com/financial-planning-process/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How do I save and invest in the best possible way to grow wealth</a>?"When you're asking questions like that, you probably don't need someone to force you to save. You have that covered already - so there's no need to add the largest purchase you'll likely ever make (while taking on debt to make that purchase) into the mix just to save more.That's actually where people get into trouble. They say, "Oh this is great, it's forced savings!" … and then they go crazy with repairs, upkeep, and renovations.Don't feel overly pressured to buy until the time is right for you (and it might never be, which is fine, too). I'm a financial planner, and I can tell you buying a home in your 20s or 30s may not be the great investment you think

Unfortunately, I didn't.In fact, I didn't start <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-way-to-save-for-retirement">saving for retirement</a> or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-money">investing my money</a> until I turned 30. Better late than never, right?Luckily, I still have a pretty long time horizon until I reach retirement age. I recently opened my first investment account, with Vanguard, and I had to decide how I wanted to allocate my assets. Contrary to popular advice, I chose to invest 100% of my portfolio in stocks, at least for now.<h2>Conventional wisdom on asset allocation for retirement</h2>One of the first decisions you have to make when you choose to invest your money is how to allocate your assets. You'll also have to continually adjust your asset allocation as you age.Put simply, asset allocation is how you split up your investments between stocks and bonds (and perhaps short-term reserves like cash and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-has-the-best-cd-rates-right-now">CDs</a>). When I opened an investment account with Vanguard in order to invest the $10,000 I'd saved up for that purpose, I had to decide how much I wanted to spend on stocks and how much I wanted to spend on bonds. A balanced retirement portfolio should include both stocks and bonds. Stocks are more volatile but provide higher average returns over the long-run, while bonds generally remain more stable but don't provide huge returns. For that reason, it's recommended that you start with mostly stocks when you're young, and gradually shift your assets toward bonds as you approach retirement age.The rule of thumb for allocating your assets is to subtract your age from 100. This number is the percentage you should allocate toward stocks, and the rest should go toward bonds.Because I was 30 when I started investing, following this advice would've meant putting 70% of my assets, or $7,000, into stocks, and 30%, or $3,000, into bonds, and then splitting up successive deposits accordingly.<h2>Why I decided to forgo conventional wisdom and invest 100% of my portfolio in stocks</h2>Of course, as with any rule of thumb, there are exceptions, and I decided that I was one.I chose to invest 100% of my retirement portfolio in stocks for the time being.Not only do I still have a long time horizon (20+ years) until I hit retirement age, but I'm also just getting started from scratch and feel a little behind. I also don't have a lot to lose. If I were investing $100,000, I wouldn't be so quick to put it all in stocks. But given that I'm only investing $10,000, I feel comfortable shouldering more risk for the prospect of a higher reward.I also expect to live longer than the median life expectancy that conventional wisdom was based on (78 to 82 years old). That's the life expectancy today, but there's plenty of science suggesting that those of us currently in our 20s and 30s will live significantly longer, giving my portfolio more time to recover if (or when) stocks tank.Another reason I'm okay with putting so much money into stocks is that I have multiple streams of income and plan to continue diversifying my income. This means that I won't be fully reliant on my investment portfolio for income in retirement, and again, can shoulder a bit more risk.<h2>My plans for my retirement savings in my 30s and beyond</h2>As my investment account grows and I get older, I will start shifting some of my assets toward bonds. My plan is to keep aggressively dumping all of my disposable income into my investment portfolio in order to catch up, placing all of it in stocks for now.Within the next couple of years, I'll adjust my portfolio until I've allocated 90% in stocks and 10% in bonds. By the time I'm 35, I hope to be approaching $200,000 in my portfolio and have it invested 80% in stocks and 20% in bonds. I'll keep that asset allocation until my 40s, at which point I'll continue shifting more assets to bonds.My situation is unique in many ways, but I do believe we'll start seeing more people taking this approach to investing in their 20s and 30s. "That is until you realize that a mutual fund can beat the market even if it loses money. In 2008, the S&amp;P 500 Index dropped 37% for the year. Given that performance, a mutual fund could truthfully claim that it “beat the market” by incurring a loss of only 20% or even 30%.

The SEC today announced charges against North-Carolina based investment advisor, Chariot Advisors LLC and its former owner Elliot L Shifman. The SEC accuses the advisor of misleading the fund's board about "the nature, extent, and quality of services that the firm could provide as he touted the competitive benefits of algorithmic trading in two presentations before the board."
"Contrary to what Shifman told the directors, Chariot Advisors did not devise or otherwise possess any algorithms capable of engaging in the currency trading that Shifman was describing. After the fund was launched, Chariot Advisors did not use an algorithm model to perform the fund’s currency trading as represented to the board, but instead hired an individual trader who was allowed to use discretion on trade selection and execution. The misconduct by Shifman and Chariot Advisors caused misrepresentations and omissions in the Chariot fund’s registration statement and prospectus filed with the SEC and viewed by investors."

Bond funds saw $30.3 billion in redemptions this month through August 19, according to a report by TrimTabs cited by Investment News. This follows on $69.1 billion in withdrawals in June. "Lulled into complacency by a 30-year bull market, many of these investors probably did not understand the risks they were assuming and regarded bond funds as 'safe'," TrimTabs said. "Now they seem to be reacting very quickly to losses."

"Historically, September is the worst month for U.S. stock market performance," according to Scott Minerd at Guggenheim Partners. The worst performing single month over this time period was September 1931, when the S&amp;P composite fell 30 percent." Of course this September there is uncertainty surrounding the Fed taper, the budget debate and the German election.

That'd be a meteoric rise for the sector that has been shunned by ESG-focused investors in recent years.Such a move would be fueled at the expense of the tech sector, which combined with communication services made up nearly half of the S&amp;P 500 at its peak during the pandemic. "Technology stocks remain very nervous, and a leadership change is underway," Navellier said in reference to this week's trainwreck of earnings results from mega-cap tech companies like Meta and Amazon."I predict that in early 2025, energy stocks will be 30% of the S&amp;P 500 and technology stocks will fall to about only 32%," Navellier said.
