In its master circular dated 12th June, 2024, the insurance watchdog laid out a slew of customer-friendly directives for life insurance companies to follow with immediate effect. This will serve to explain to them the basic features of the policy in very simple terms, and will include essential details like sum assured, benefits, policy loan options, free-look period and procedures for making claims and redressing grievances. In addition, benefits payable to the policyholder if they survive the policy tenure (maturity benefits), upon death and surrender of policy should also be clearly spelt out. Along with this, the policyholders are also entitled to a customised illustration of how the policy will benefit them while they are being sold the policy. CIS should also be made available to the policyholder in their local language on request. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Free-look and grace period" comment="subhead" text="Free-look and grace period"><keyword id="22053620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Free-look-and-Grace-Period" source="Orion">Free-look and grace period</keyword></cmsannotation> Policyholders will now have a 30-day window from the day they receive the policy document to review and cancel the policy if they want. If the policy is cancelled within this period, they will be entitled to a full premium refund. Earlier, this period only lasted for 15 days. For grace period, which basically refers to the additional, penalty-free window given to the policyholder to make premium payment post due date to avoid losing coverage, the windows will differ depending on premium payment frequency. If you pay the policy premiums on a monthly basis, you will get a 15-day grace period. For premium payments made on a quarterly/half-yearly or annual basis, the grace period will be of 30 days. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word" comment="subhead" text="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word">Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word</cmsannotation> The insurer is bound to comply with the <keyword id="960887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insurance-Ombudsman" source="Orion">Insurance Ombudsman</keyword>’s award within 30 days of receiving the same. In case the same is violated, the insurer will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 per day to the complainant. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Higher value on early policy surrender" comment="subhead" text="Higher value on early policy surrender">Higher value on early policy surrender</cmsannotation> Often, policyholders ended up with a low, negligible amount as refund upon surrendering their insurance policy. This is set to change with <keyword id="21879234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRDA" source="keywords">IRDA</keyword>’s latest directives. Now, policyholders will be eligible for <keyword id="885219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrender-value" source="Orion">surrender value</keyword> even if they decide to surrender their policy after just one year. Previously, only 50% of <keyword id="2939473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="policy-premium" source="Orion">policy premium</keyword> would be refunded, provided the policyholders surrendered their policy between years 4-7 of the policy tenure. Moreover, they would lose the entire premium amount if they surrendered their policy within a year. Customers will also be entitled to higher special surrender value (SSV) from now on. This SSV should be at least equivalent to the expected present one of the these three: <ol><li>Paid up sum assured, or present value of your sum assured after you stop paying premiums</li><li>Paid up future benefits</li><li>Accrued benefits</li></ol>Also, it will be compulsory for life insurers to offer loans to policyholders as per the eligible surrender value of the policy. Says Vivek Jain, Head, Investments, Policybazaar.com, "The provision for higher Surrender Value (SV), calculated at a prevailing 10-year government securities rate with a limited spread, significantly increases the value returned to policyholders in the event of a policy surrender, after the completion of first year. The mandatory facility of policy loans across all life insurance savings products and the allowance of partial withdrawals under pension products will provide vital financial flexibility, which will enable policyholders to meet liquidity needs and specific financial goals. These measures will certainly enhance trust and transparency in the industry." <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products" comment="subhead" text="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products">Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products</cmsannotation> Policyholders will be allowed to make partial withdrawals, provided they have 3 years of continuous coverage under their insurance-cum-pension plan. Also, these withdrawals cannot be more than 25% of the total premiums paid till date. The insurer cannot use this withdrawal towards making any adjustments in the policy's sum assured. However, this withdrawal will only be allowed for specific situations, like funding children’s higher education/marriage, constructing a house, treating critical illnesses, starting a new venture or for skill development purposes.

In some instances, the allegations say, former players submitted claims suggesting they had the same dental treatments done to the same teeth on the same days.In one instance, according to the indictment, the administrative manager of the Health and Welfare Benefit Plan requested letters of medical necessity from a chiropractor that Glen Davis, Charles Watson Jr., and Antoine Wright said they'd seen. The letters the players submitted did not have letterheads and had grammatical errors. One letter misspelled a purported patient's name, according to the indictment.In another instance, the indictment alleges, Gregory Smith submitted claims for dental services totaling $47,900 from a dentist in Beverly Hills on December 20, 2018. Smith last played in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2016. However, the indictment says that Smith was not in California on the date of those dental services - he'd sent an email to Williams saying he was out of the country that week, and box scores showed Smith had played in a Taiwanese basketball league from December 16-21, 2018.Similar allegations suggest that Davis submitted dental expenses worth $27,000 from a dentist in Beverly Hills on October 2, 2018. Can Your Travel Insurance Claim Get Rejected?

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced Nirvik (Niryat Rin Vikas Yojana) scheme to provide enhanced insurance cover and reduce premium for small exporters.
 "To achieve higher export credit disbursement, a new scheme NIRVIK is being launched which provides for high insurance cover, reduction in premium for small exporters and simplified procedures for claim settlements," she said while presenting Budget 2020-21 here.
The scheme is being prepared by the commerce ministry.
Under the scheme, also called the Export Credit Insurance Scheme (ECIS), the insurance guaranteed could cover up to 90 per cent of the principal and interest.
The ministry has also proposed to subsidise the premium under the scheme that has to be paid by exporters of certain key sectors.
The Export Credit Guarantee Corporation currently provides credit guarantee of up to 60 per cent loss.
The development assumes significance as exporters have raised concerns over availability of credit.
The country's exports contracted for a fifth month in a row by 1.8 per cent in December 2019 to USD 27.36 billion. 
During April-December 2019-20, exports slipped 1.96 per cent to USD 239.29 billion, imports declined 8.9 per cent to USD 357.39 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 118.10 billion.

This isn't the first time Byrne has run into issues. She wanted to get chest reconstruction in 2017. She had been required to submit photos of her chest, send letters and referrals from mental-health professionals and the rest of her care team stating that this surgery was necessary, and share her comprehensive medical history.Even with all of the this, the insurer initially rejected her request."It's a very disgusting feeling when somebody sends you back a note that says, you know, we think you're just fine," Byrne told Insider. "It's gaslighting. It's painful that a faceless person in an office is saying that we don't think that you're right."Byrne's experience is far from unique. Getting<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/transgender-medical-care-surgery-expensive-2019-6"> healthcare as a transgender person</a> in the US often involves jumping through a series of hoops, whether it's finding a qualified doctor or getting insurance coverage for routine procedures following gender-affirming operations.Trans patients like Byrne end up shouldering larger healthcare burdens than many of their cisgender peers.The costs involved in overcoming these barriers to care add up. To start, transgender patients seeking hormone therapy or gender-affirming medical procedures must receive a mental-health diagnosis for <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-gender-dysphoria">gender dysphoria</a> - a step that led to $292 million in insurance charges last year. That figure tells only part of the story. In conversations with researchers, doctors, surgeons, and six trans patients, Insider found that trans patients face three major hurdles in accessing care. That includes prohibitive costs associated with required mental-health diagnoses, murky insurance coverage that continues to drive up costs and push patients to inexperienced practitioners, and the lack of standardized care from surgeons and other care providers.Many patients end up paying out of pocket, and others pay in other ways, like receiving substandard care or undertaking long commutes to trusted providers.There are vast discrepancies in the quality and cost of care trans patients receive, so much so that two patients who spoke with Insider said they moved states while seeking care to get access to better doctors and insurance plans.Medical education rarely addresses trans-specific health needs, and there are no formal parameters for prescribing off-label treatments like hormone therapy or training surgeons. The Endocrine Society, a community of physicians, does offer <a href="https://www.endocrine.org/clinical-practice-guidelines/gender-dysphoria-gender-incongruence">provider guidelines</a> for prescribing hormone therapy but does not address off-label hormone use, specifically.<h2>Insurance is the first barrier many trans patients come up against</h2>When a trans patient tells their primary doctor that they require gender-affirming care, the insurance process kicks into gear.Many insurance companies require patients to get diagnosed with<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/transgender-medical-care-surgery-expensive-2019-6"> gender dysphoria</a>, a condition in which a person's outward appearance of gender doesn't match what they feel inside, by a licensed psychiatrist before they can move forward. Just getting to that initial diagnosis cost the average patient $1,359 in 2020, with insurance coverage, according to data Definitive Healthcare compiled for Insider. Some plans do not cover mental-health visits or counseling at all, though they're required by insurers in order for trans patients to be eligible for future coverage.Following a gender-dysphoria diagnosis, many trans patients begin hormone-replacement therapy, if they haven't already. These hormones are prescribed to trans patients as an off-label use, meaning they were not explicitly approved by the FDA to be used in this way, so many insurance plans do not cover them.According to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lgbtq-healthcare-startup-folx-series-a-niche-primary-care-2021-1"> A.G. Breitenstein, the founder and CEO of LGBTQIA+ healthcare startup Folx</a>, that can drive up drug costs nine times as high as what a cisgender patient would pay."We had to go through multiple levels of review to be able to authorize the use of those drugs to this population," Breitenstein told Insider about how her startup was able to offer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lgbtqia-healthcare-startup-folx-rethink-healthcare-telemedicine-2020-12">price transparency for hormone-replacement therapies</a>. "People weren't going to prescribe for us. We had to go through multiple extra levels of scrutiny where something with the evidence of the use is obvious."Those who do get insurance coverage and are able to pursue gender-affirming care can run into additional hurdles depending on which state they live in. Medicaid, the government health-insurance program for lower-income Americans, varies widely in its coverage by state.Even progressive hubs like New York and California have barriers built into their Medicaid systems that add a financial and mental burden to trans patients, Byrne said."Here I am, in the one of the most trans-friendly cities in the US, with an explicitly trans-inclusive healthcare policy, at a doctor who is literally the only one in San Francisco who works with trans folks on this procedure through state insurance (to my knowledge), with all my ducks in a row-and this is still happening," Byrne said. "I just want to live my life, not fight insurance every damn day for coverage or to do the things they already agreed to do."<h2>Surgeries are often rejected by insurers - even those that claim to cover it</h2>That scrutiny continues as trans patients seek medical procedures to affirm their identities and alleviate their gender dysphoria. For some people, changing their brow shape or removing hair can help make them feel more comfortable in their body. For others, that means getting top and/or bottom surgery. That was where Byrne was in her gender transition when she was asked to submit photographs of her chest. On paper, her insurer deems chest reconstruction for transgender patients as medically necessary, but it initially denied covering her surgery. Byrne was eventually able to get surgery after a year-long appeal process. About 55% of transgender people who sought coverage for surgeries in 2015 were denied coverage, according to an<a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/2019-03/transgender-coverage-issue-brief.pdf"> American Medical Association report</a>. Without insurance coverage, the cost of these procedures can<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/transgender-medical-care-surgery-expensive-2019-6"> easily hit six figures</a>.There are only about 50 or 60 surgeons in the US who perform the most complicated gender-confirmation surgeries, Dr. Marci Bowers, one of the leading voices in the trans surgical field, said. These procedures, often bottom surgery, involve changing a person's genitals from female to male or vice versa. Many of these surgeons work in more liberal, urban areas like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, leaving geographic dead zones across the US. Even in those regions, patients can find themselves cornered into going to inexperienced surgeons by their insurance company. When Devin Huntspon moved from St. Louis to San Francisco, she was suddenly able to get insurance coverage for her bottom surgery.But there was only one surgeon that Blue Cross Blue Shield would cover in her area: a doctor who had just started working in the field and had performed only a couple of surgeries."I was very uncomfortable with that," Huntspon said.<h2>A highly variable education system and lack of research creates a 'Wild West' health landscape for patients</h2>On a whole, the standards for teaching physicians how to conduct transgender-related surgeries is nascent."It's kind of like the Wild West," said Dr. William Kuzon, who leads one of the few transgender surgical fellowships in the country, at the University of Michigan.Bowers, for one, trained informally under one of the original transgender surgeons in the US. Across the country at Massachusetts General Hospital, another surgeon described learning how to perform gender-confirmation surgery by attending lectures and watching videos before observing the surgery at nearby Boston Medical Center, which opened and began performing surgeries in 2016. The<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41443-020-0304-y"> data available</a> shows that surgeries for trans men can have high rates of complications. Kuzon pointed to one surgery in particular, in which the urethra is lengthened and a skin graft is used to create a penis. Resulting scar tissue or abnormal openings can create complications for patients for years to come.Bryne and other trans advocates<a href="https://wpathopenletter.wordpress.com/"> wrote an open letter in 2018</a> to one of the few organizations of transgender medical professionals, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, asking the group to take the lead to formalize transgender healthcare in the US. Advocates also feel that if the training were more formalized, that could lead to better insurance coverage. The organization, however, cited the vast geographic differences in its response saying such formalization could be untenable.Los Angeles resident Sol Brennan, who was assigned female at birth but is nonbinary, has been weighing whether to have bottom surgery. They've held off partly because the lack of experience and oversight of these surgeries makes them nervous.When scrolling through the online forums in which trans patients share their experiences with different surgeons, Brennan has seen numerous accounts of trans men who have ended up incontinent after surgery."It's heartbreaking. Nobody puts themself under the knife to come out worse," Brennan said. "You want to do this once. You don't want someone to clean up bad work."

With the world economy heading towards a possible slowdown and India being one of the major economies having any real chances of growing at a faster rate, everyone will be looking forward to how this year’s Budget will address the issue of stagnating private investment in India. 	Following is my wish list for 2016 Union Budget. 
	 
	A uniform <keyword id="167905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KYC">KYC</keyword> 
	 
	Unlike e-policy holders, offline insurance buyers have to undergo a lot of paperwork, as part of KYC procedures. In addition to this, insurers usually call for multiple KYCs for different policies and this act as deterrent for new investors to invest in insurance policies. Government must consider giving a strong push to uniform KYC and e-claims, irrespective of whether the policy is purchased online or offline. This would make the process of buying insurance policies and filing claims easier. 
	 
	Revise tax exemptions 
	 
	At present, premium of up to Rs.25000 paid for health insurance plans qualify for deduction under Section 80D. This limit rests at Rs.30000 in case of senior citizens. Tax exemption under health insurance plan should be revised as the current incentive is inadequate, taking into consideration the rising healthcare cost. Just to give you an example, a 55yr old sole earner in a family of 4 would easily spend upwards of Rs.30000 per annum for Rs.10lacs sum insured. Also, the current exemption does not provide incentives for those who buy long term health insurance plan. Increasing the income tax exemption limit in health insurance will encourage people to buy health policies with larger covers, and for longer tenure. 
	 
	Tax exemption for home insurance 
	 
	While catastrophic destruction caused by natural calamities such as Chennai floods and Nepal earthquake influenced people to think about getting their home and property insured, people continue to remain hesitant about getting their property insured and hence, end up procrastinating it. Home insurance enables people to deal with huge financial losses that they would otherwise incur in case of natural disasters. Introducing tax exemptions on house insurance premiums would encourage homeowners to insure their homes. 
	 
	Make term insurance attractive 
	 
	At present, term insurance products constitute just 0.4% of the total insurance products sold in India. Distributors find term insurance products unattractive as their payouts, as per current regulation, is just above zero percent. The cap on the payouts needs to be relaxed to make selling term insurance attractive for the distributors. This would go a long way in increasing the average life insurance coverage of Indians. 
	 
	To sum up, as low insurance penetration is a problem area, the FM should increase tax incentives to encourage people to buy adequate insurance cover. This will also help the insurance industry to raise more resources for financing government’s physical and social infrastructure programs.

Courtesy Surgery Center of OklahomaDoctors Keith Smith and Stephen Lantier, founders of the Surgery Center of OklahomaWhen Cheryl Millican found out she needed surgery, her Dallas-based doctor told her it would cost roughly $38,000 out of pocket. Millican, who doesn't have insurance, needed a hysterectomy, a procedure that removes all or part of the uterus. It wasn't an emergency situation, so when a friend told her about a place in Oklahoma that could perform the surgery for $8,000, she decided to look into it. That included the cost of the procedure itself, an overnight stay, a follow-up appointment, and any other meetings ahead of time. In August 2016, Millican drove the three hours to the Surgery Center of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City to get the procedure for $30,000 less than she might have paid. In March, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/direct-primary-care-a-no-insurance-healthcare-model-2017-3">Business Insider reported</a> on a new movement happening with primary care doctors. It's called direct primary care, and it works like this: Instead of accepting insurance for routine visits and drugs, these practices charge a monthly membership fee that covers most of what the average patient needs, including visits and drugs at much lower prices.It's happening at a time when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/out-of-pocket-healthcare-payments-skyrocketing-2016-9">high-deductible health plans are on the rise</a> - a survey in September found that 51% of workers had a plan that required them to pay up to $1,000 out of pocket for healthcare until insurance picks up most of the rest.And it's not just happening in primary care. A number of specialists - oncologists, physical therapists, and even some hospitals - are jumping on board as well. It works a little different from primary care, where there's a monthly fee. Instead, these practices are based solely off services they provide with transparent pricing. For example, if you needed a knee replacement, you could go on the provider's website and find out just how much you'd be expected to pay. The other services tend to "snowball" in locations where a doctor has started a direct primary care provider, so that by the end of the year there might be five providers that offer cash prices, Meg Freedman, the executive director of the Free Market Medical Association told Business Insider. FMMA tracks organizations that sell and buy healthcare services as part of this "free market" model.<h2>The history of cash-priced procedures</h2>AP Photo/Nam Y. HuhDr. Keith Smith founded the Surgery Center of Oklahoma in 1997, and at the time he wasn't exactly setting out to ditch insurance. Before the 1990s, the prices for different procedures were allowed to be shared with patients, Smith said. But then something changed.The center would file claims, but insurance companies weren't keen on working with the center because the center was being open about the prices it was charging, he said. After a while, the center and the insurance companies parted ways. "Insurance companies hate us," he said.There are some key differences between how direct primary care works, and how cash-pay providers like the Surgery Center work. For one, a monthly membership isn't necessary, since you won't necessarily be using a cash-pay health center more than once. And many - unlike the Surgery Center - will still work with insurance companies in addition to providing cash prices. "The similarity is that they are honest and predictable about what they charge everybody who's involved," Smith said. Surgery Center lists the prices for more than 200 outpatient procedures on its website, covering everything from plastic surgery to a hip replacement. The site also discloses information about its infection rates, and relies heavily on reviews. "Our reputation is everything," Smith said.And they're not the only ones. The <a href="https://fmma.org/providers/">FMMA lists 67 providers</a> that disclose their prices, including other surgery centers, imaging centers, and a handful of physical therapy practices among specialties. And Freedman said she adds about 9 to 10 new providers every month to the FMMA's search tool.<h2>Turning a profit</h2>Smith said the Surgery Center has had people fly in from as far away as Turkey and Ethiopia for procedures. "We are unapologetically for-profit," Smith said. "I'm not in this business to lose money."Because the Surgery Center's price for a hysterectomy was so much lower than what Millican had been quoted at a Dallas hospital, she asked her doctor why he chose to do the procedure at a lower price. He told her frankly that it was profitable for him. When he performs the procedure using insurance, he is paid $500, she recalled him telling her. For her procedure, he told her, he got paid five times that. When she thought about how little $500 was in the grand scheme of how much she might have paid for her surgery, she found it frustrating. "The doctor was the cheapest part," she said.To be sure, the prices for certain surgical procedures are still out of reach for many. And in an emergency situation, taking the time to shop around for the lowest price might not be an option. But cash-pay providers are gaining traction with self-insured employers, who see it as more cost-effective than paying through traditional insurance. Freedman recalled an instance where a woman with breast cancer flew to Oklahoma for a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and reconstructive surgery, all paid for by her employer using cash prices because it was the cheapest option. <h2>Where the movement's heading</h2>In general, healthcare providers that don't take insurance are still in the minority in the US. Still, the movement appears to be growing. At the Surgery Center, Smith said he's observed it lately getting busier by the week, though he didn't give a reason why. The center now performs 7-8,000 surgeries in a year. It's sparking other specialists to chime in, too. Dr. Virigina Harbour, a physical therapist in Oklahoma City. began working with Smith and the Surgery Center about a year ago to provide her services as part of the flat fee the Surgery Center charges for joint replacements. Though she still accepts insurance at her practice, she prefers the cash-only model, where patients who need physical therapy pay a set price for a bundle of sessions over the few weeks they need the care.Harbour's one of the only physical therapists she knows that's working with this model, though she's built out a network of other clinics she works with when patients who come to get surgery in Oklahoma head back home."We're in the infancy of it," Harbour said. There's a growing movement of surgery centers and specialists that list their prices and don't take insurance

If you are planning to go overseas for higher studies, here are a few things you should know about the health <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> you should carry. 
 
1. Know your options 
 
Unless the university makes it mandatory for you to buy the health cover it provides, you can waive it, especially if you are already covered as a dependant or want to purchase it privately. You can pick one from a local insurer in the country you are travelling to, or an Indian insurance company before you leave. 
 Many <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> club the premium with the tuition fee for convenience, but the university may not offer the best deal, and it is wise to compare. Despite the online channel, it’s not easy to buy a plan from a foreign insurer. So start by surfing the domestic plans. For some universities like MIT and <keyword id="33081" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Stanford">Stanford</keyword>, the plan must comply with their guidelines. If the prepackaged plan doesn’t match the requirements, insurers are ready to tweak it. 
 
2. Compare cost 
 
The university cover is much more expensive than one from a domestic insurer if you are studying in western countries. For instance, Columbia University’s basic health plan with a $300,000 cover will cost $2,157 (Rs 1,29,420 @ Rs 60/$) annually. On the other hand, a domestic insurer, say, ICICI Lombard, offers plans with a cover of $500,000 at an annual premium of Rs 46,851. The rule changes if you are closer home, say, in China Medical University. The college charges 600 CNY (Chinese yuan renminbi) annually, that is, Rs 6,000 (@ Rs 10/CNY). 
 
A cover from a domestic insurer will cost you around Rs 7,500 in this case. However, do not pick a plan solely on the basis of cost. Compare the cover How to gain size and benefits as well. 
 
3. Factors to consider 
 
Since you are travelling to a foreign country, consider features like cashless facility, network hospitals near your campus, claim settlement procedure and past record of insurer. 
 
Though a domestic plan costs less, the university policy is likely to score more on these parameters and also cover pre-existing conditions. Another important factor is the sub-limits and deductibles. University plans usually have higher deductibles. For instance, while the plan from Columbia University has a deductible of $500 (Rs 30,000 @ Rs 60/$), the plan from the domestic insurer has a sub-limit of $100 (Rs 6,000). This means, if you are hospitalised and run a bill of $1,600 (Rs 96,000), the university plan will only pay $1,100 (Rs 66,000), while the Indian insurer will cover up to $1,500 (Rs 90,000). 
 Also, the university plan will cover only health. The domestic insurance is a bundled <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> insurance and covers loss of baggage and passport too. 
 
4. Continue with your plan 
 
If you already have a health plan or are covered by a family floater policy, do not stop paying the premium. It is not a duplicate cover. The student plan will exist only for a few years till the time you are studying, but a regular health plan in India offers lifelong renewability. So, unless you plan to settle abroad permanently, don’t end the policy. When you return, you’ll be older and will have to pay more for buying a new policy. 
 
Besides, discontinuing the plan will mean you’ll lose the benefits accrued on it and will have to serve the four-year waiting period clause on pre-existing disease coverage all over again. Since you are young, the regular health plan premium won’t be very high and losing these long-term benefits for a few thousand rupees will be imprudent. 
 
5. Not mandatory 
 Having insurance is a must if you are going to study in the US, Canada or the Schengen countries. However, it is optional in the UK, Australia, China, and Southeast Asian countries like <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword> and Malaysia. It is important that you buy one in either case as health care is expensive in developed countries.
