For some baby boomers, lower <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-savings-social-security-baby-boomers-without-savings-401k-poverty-2024-8">Social Security</a> taxes could mean larger monthly checks in the short-term. But experts predict that the <keyword id="23944791" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Social-Security-tax-cuts" source="keywords">Social Security tax cuts</keyword>, along with other campaign promises made by Trump, could quickly drain the national Social Security fund. That would put benefits at risk for low-income retirees and younger generations, who may <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-savings-social-security-baby-boomers-without-savings-401k-poverty-2024-8">rely on that income</a> as they age. "It's designed to help retirees, but the people it's going to hurt are people that rely on Social Security the most," Taylor Lee, a certified financial planner at Belmont Capital Advisors, told BI of Trump's Social Security tax cut. More than 72 million Americans receive Social Security and the estimated average monthly check is <a target="_blank" href="https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-01903">$1,92</a>4.35 a month, per the Social Security Administration. Americans can begin taking Social Security at age 62, or wait until their full benefits kick in at 67, the national retirement age. Trump's campaign promise comes as Business Insider has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/older-americans-regret-retirement-savings-taking-social-security-early-investments-2024-10">heard from older adults</a> with limited retirement savings, many of whom are struggling to afford necessities like housing and groceries on their fixed Social Security income. Income taxes on Social Security apply to all beneficiaries with an annual household income above $25,000, and most pay taxes on at least <a target="_blank" href="https://www-origin.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/taxes.html">50%</a> of their benefits. Lower-income beneficiaries pay less in taxes. <h2>Social Security tax cuts would hurt low-income retirees, younger generations</h2>US Social Security will be depleted<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-will-social-security-benefits-run-out-retirement-crisis-boomers-2024-5">in the next decade</a> without Congressional action. That's three years earlier than the Congressional Budget Office's current estimation. Those policies would also lead to a 33% <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.crfb.org/blogs/what-would-trump-campaign-plans-mean-social-security">benefit cut</a> in 2035, a 10% increase from what the Congressional Budget Office projects under the current law. Lee said that low-income boomers and younger generations are likely to feel the brunt of these cuts. Low-income boomers living on Social Security already pay less income taxes, so they wouldn't see the benefits Trump promised. Lee said that many don't have other <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-security-no-savings-snap-benefits-debt-boomers-experiences-2024-6">retirement savings </a>to fall back on if their benefits are slashed. He added that older Americans who are wealthy or middle class would feel less stress from Social Security cuts, and may benefit in the short term from Trump's tax plan. "It would help people in the middle class, people that have the luxury of having a 401(k) or an IRA and have multiple sources of retirement income," Lee said. "But the people that's going to hurt the most are people that don't have that traditional retirement income." Lee said it's possible that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-social-security-insolvency-medicare-donald-trump-biden-mcconnell-2023-3">younger generations</a> will have lower Social Security benefits, requiring them to rely more heavily on retirement savings. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was urged by senior advocate NK Kaul, appearing for the ed-tech major, that the case needed to be heard at the earliest. Kaul said, "The only funding was done by the promoters and today no one has brought any external borrowing. We have to show today how malafide the petition (of US firm) is." "I will get it listed as early as possible," the CJI, who was indisposed and in quarantine for the last few days, said. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the US-based creditor, said it also wanted an early hearing. In a major setback to Byju's, the top court had on August 14 stayed the verdict of NCLAT, setting aside the insolvency proceedings against the ed-tech major and approving its Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the Indian cricket board. The August 2 verdict of the NCLAT had come as a huge relief for Byju's as it had effectively put its founder Byju Raveendran back in control. The top court, however, had prima facie termed the NCLAT verdict as "unconscionable" and stayed its operation while issuing notices to Byju's and others on the appeal of the ed-tech firm's US-based creditor against the judgment of the insolvency appellate tribunal. The case stemmed from Byju's default on a Rs 158.9 crore payment related to a sponsorship deal with the BCCI. The top court had directed the BCCI to keep a sum of Rs 158 crore it had received from Byju's after a settlement in a separate escrow account till further orders. "Issue notice. Pending further orders there shall be a stay of the impugned order of August 2 of NCLAT. In the meantime, BCCI shall maintain the amount of Rs 158 crore, which shall be realised in pursuance of a settlement, in a separate escrow account until further orders," the bench had said. The NCLAT had approved the Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the BCCI and set aside the insolvency proceedings against Byju's. Byju's had entered into a "Team Sponsor Agreement" with the BCCI in 2019. Under the agreement, the ed-tech firm got exclusive rights to display its brand on the Indian cricket team's kit and some other benefits. Byju's had to pay a sponsorship fee. The company met its obligations till the middle of 2022 but defaulted on subsequent payments of Rs 158.9 crore. After insolvency proceedings were initiated, Byju's entered into a settlement with the BCCI. On July 16, the Bengaluru bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had admitted 'Think and Learn', Byju's parent company, to the insolvency resolution process on a plea filed by the BCCI over default in payment of outstanding dues of almost Rs 158.9 crore. While suspending the board of the ed-tech firm, the NCLT had appointed an interim resolution professional to run the operations of the company, suspended the company's board of directors, and brought it under moratorium by freezing its assets. The US-based lenders suspected that the settlement amount was being diverted from the credit they had extended to Byju's. Supreme Court agrees to list plea related to insolvency proceedings against ed-tech firm Byju's

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was urged by a battery of lawyers that the plea be heard urgently keeping in mind the subsequent developments in the case. The plea was mentioned by senior advocate NK Kaul, appearing for the ed-tech major, that the case needed to be heard at the earliest. The submission was supported by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the <keyword id="19901245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="keywords">BCCI</keyword>, and senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi, also appearing for the ed-tech firm. The matter will be placed before a bench headed by <keyword id="19916403" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Company-Law-Appellate-Tribunal" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Company Law Appellate Tribunal" meta.hostid="345" meta.entityid="National Company Law Appellate Tribunal">National Company Law Appellate Tribunal</keyword> (NCLAT) Chairman Justice Ashok Bhushan, who will assign a different bench to hear the matter. Raveendran had filed a petition challenging the initiation of <keyword id="19965539" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insolvency-proceedings" source="keywords">insolvency proceedings</keyword> against Think &amp; Learn, which runs edtech company Byju's. The matter was listed on Monday before a two-member Chennai-based bench of the NCLAT comprising Justice Sharad Kumar Sharma, Member (Judicial), and Jatindranath Swain, Member (Technical). NCLT has suspended the board of Think &amp; Learn Pvt Ltd as per the provisions of the IBC and had appointed an interim resolution professional (IRP) to take care of the debt-ridden firm. Raveendran challenged the NCLT order before the appellate tribunal NCLAT. He has also approached the Karnataka High Court. The high court had, on July 26 deferred Raveendran's plea to July 30. At the high court, Raveendran challenged the validity of the order and suspension of the NCLT order till the NCLAT hears the appeal.

The Reserve Bank is constantly evaluating the emerging trends and taking necessary policy measures to remain in sync with the changing times, he said, adding the central bank's effort is to anticipate situations and take proactive measures. In a 25-page order passed on Friday, the tribunal cleared the resolution plan at an investment of ₹1,814 crore. The amount includes a "resolution plan amount of ₹1,466.50 crore to be paid/ discharged from funds infused over multiple tranches into the corporate debtor by way of cash funding and instruments, being equity, Project inflows, loans, advances or a combination thereof," the order said. The corporate debtor is Lavasa. A monitoring committee comprising the insolvency professional (earlier resolution professional), one representative each from financial creditors and <keyword id="12585854" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="darwin-platform" source="Orion">Darwin Platform</keyword> will supervise the implementation of the resolution plan. "The resolution plan meets the necessary statutory requirements under the Code as well as the regulations, we hereby approve the same," the <keyword id="6355809" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nclt" source="Orion">NCLT</keyword> said. The petition for the insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (<keyword id="192838" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ibc" source="Orion">IBC</keyword>) was initiated in August 2018. The <keyword id="6354457" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-company-law-tribunal" source="Orion">National Company Law Tribunal</keyword> (<keyword id="6355809" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nclt" source="Orion">NCLT</keyword>) on Wednesday admitted Go First's voluntary plea to initiate the insolvency resolution process against the airline. A two-member bench comprising President Justice Ramalingam <keyword id="198622" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sudhakar" source="Orion">Sudhakar</keyword> and L N Gupta also appointed Abhliash Lal as interim resolution professional (IRP) to run the debt-ridden company. It has also put the company under the protection of a moratorium and directed the suspended board of directors to assist the IRP to run the company during insolvency proceedings. Besides, NCLT also ordered to keep the company as a going concern and ensure that no employees are retrenched. On May 4, the NCLT reserved its order after hearing the <keyword id="7629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wadia" source="Orion">Wadia</keyword> group-owned carrier and its aircraft lessors who have opposed the petition seeking interim protection. Go First, which has been flying for more than 17 years, stopped flights on May 3 amid a financial crunch caused by the grounding of more than half of its fleet due to non-availability of Pratt &amp; Whitney engines. With liabilities worth Rs 11,463 crore, the airline has sought voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings as well as an interim moratorium on its financial obligations. Go First has already suspended the sale of tickets till May 15. As many as 28 planes or more than half of the airline's fleet are grounded due to the non-supply of engines by Pratt &amp; Whitney (P&amp;W). The lessors of the carrier have opposed Go First's plea for an interim moratorium contending that it would have "harmful and serious consequences". Besides, Go First is facing two more petitions seeking insolvency proceedings against it. NCLT admits Go First's plea to initiate insolvency resolution

<keyword id="12792045" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-Lifestyle" source="Orion">Future Lifestyle</keyword> Fashions Ltd has received a total claim of Rs 2,155.53 crore from 12 financial creditors in the <keyword id="5961445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="corporate-insolvency-resolution-process" source="Orion">corporate insolvency resolution process</keyword> (CIRP) initiated against this Future group company recently. The resolution professional of the company has provisionally admitted claims of Rs 2,117.03 crore and claims worth Rs 38.5 crore are "under verification", said the latest data shared by Future Lifestyle Fashions Ltd (<keyword id="1567510" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="flfl" source="Orion">FLFL</keyword>) on the exchanges. As per the provision of the Insolvency &amp; Bankruptcy Code, a Committee of Creditors (CoC) of FLFL has been formed and it will have its first meeting next week. "We wish to inform you that the first meeting of CoC of Future Lifestyle Fashions Limited (under CIRP) will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023," it said. On May 4, the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal(NCLT) had directed to initiate CIRP against FLFL, admitting a petition from Bank of India. This is the third company of the <keyword id="6361562" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kishore" source="Orion">Kishore</keyword> Biyani-led Future Group to be dragged into CIRP by its creditors for defaulting on loans. Its flagship firm <keyword id="1636009" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="future-retail-ltd" source="Orion">Future Retail Ltd</keyword> and logistics and infra arm Future Enterprises are already facing insolvency proceedings. FLFL was considering asset monetisation to pare its debts, however, it did not materialise. It had entered into a One Time Restructuring (OTR) Plan with lenders also. The company has in-house retail chains Central and Brand Factory, exclusive brand outlets (EBOs) and other multi-brand outlets (MBOs) of nearly a dozen apparel labels, including Lee Copper, Champion, aLL, Indigo Nation, Giovani, John Miller, Scullers, Converse and Urbana in its portfolio. According to the regulatory filing, State Bank of India leads the CoC of FLFL with 22.51 per cent voting share. It had an admitted loan of Rs 476.59 crore. It is followed by Centbank Financial Services Ltd, a debenture trustee, having 21.01 per cent voting share with admitted claims of Rs 444.76 crore. The petitioner Bank of India has a 19.71 per cent voting share with admitted claims of Rs 417.33 crore and Bank of Baroda has a 14.02 per cent voting share with an admission of Rs 296.79 crore of claims. FLFL was part of the 19 group companies operating in retail, wholesale, logistics and warehousing segments, which were supposed to be transferred to <keyword id="58448" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-retail" source="Orion">Reliance Retail</keyword> as part of a Rs 24,713-crore deal announced in August 2020. The deal was called off by billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd in April. After that, Future Group companies had several defaults on payments. Future Lifestyle Insolvency: RP receives claims of ₹2,155.53 cr from financial creditors

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal will pass its order on May 22 on petitions filed by three aircraft lessors against <keyword id="11252024" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Go-First" source="Orion">Go First</keyword>'s voluntary insolvency resolution proceedings. A two-member bench headed by Chairperson Justice Ashok Bhushan on Monday reserved its order after completing the hearing on the the three petitions. The bench also asked the parties to submit additional documents, if any, in the next 48 hours. The appellate tribunal was hearing a batch of petitions filed by SMBC Aviation Capital Ltd, GY Aviation and <keyword id="17413255" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sfv-aircraft-holdings" source="Orion">SFV Aircraft Holdings</keyword>. All three lessors have leased out around 21 aircraft to Go First. So far this month, several lessors have approached aviation regulator DGCA for deregistration and repossession of Go First's 45 planes. Go First stopped flying from May 3. Last week the Delhi-based principal bench of the NCLT appointed an interim resolution professional to look after the affairs of Go First and also suspended its board as part of the insolvency resolution process.
