They aren’t just the latest Bollywood movies that couldn't bring Indians back to theatres — they’re also three successive releases of A-listers that have flopped. This lack of enthusiasm for Bollywood is not just affecting the actors and producers but also movie theatres which are banking on superhits to get back in the black – after a long period of pandemic-induced shutdown. Brokerage firms are worried that more Bollywood releases might not enthuse the OTT-saturated public to go to the theatres. It will affect footfalls, and have a cascading effect on ad revenues, the theatre chains’ ability to go in for price hikes and more. Several analysts quizzed Inox’s director Siddharth Jain about the same during the quarterly earnings conference call. Jain emphasised multiple times that bad movies would not have an impact on the footfall for its business. “Q1 [April to June] has been great but after that few movies have not done well. That does not mean that people will shy away from coming to the theatres… One or two movies not working, or one month not doing well, does not mean that people will refrain from coming to the theatre to watch a movie or the entire pipeline is bad,” he said. Yet, analysts are not mollified. They do not believe that the audience is ready to go back to watch ‘average movies’, especially since they’re spoilt for choice by multiple OTT options, in addition to traditional TV. When big movies flop, theatres lose as much as producers. “The most prioritized goal for multiplexes like PVR and INOX is to fill the theatre with audiences to maximise their profit. But flop movies fail them to accomplish this goal. He emphasised that the quality of movies that came out between April and June was “exceptional” and that had a big role to play in people’s enthusiasm for watching movies in theatres. “The consumer appeal for movie theatres is very much intact and it’s also the quality of content,” he noted. The theatres did a stellar March business thanks to South hits like KGF and RRR in addition to Kashmir Files and Gangubai Kathiawadi. In spite of the sales, the two listed movie chains — Inox and PVR both posted net losses for the first quarter of ₹239 crore and ₹478 crore in the fourth quarter, respectively. They’re still on the road to recovery and for that, they need more ‘recovery worthy movies’, and that can only come from Bollywood. According to analysts, while South movies helped in the past, only big Bollywood movies that are released across multiple screens can bring them the recovery that they need. <table Meanwhile, calls to boycott Akshay Kumar-starrer Raksha Bandhan were also made on <a href="https://www.india.com/entertainment/boycott-raksha-bandhan-movie-akshay-kumar-film-trending-twitter-kanika-dhillon-heres-the-reason-5550340/">Twitter earlier</a> on August 4. Going by the trend, many big releases across multiple screens and languages have flopped badly in the last six months – be it Kangana Ranaut’s Dhaakad, Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey or Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam. Ranveer Singh’s 83 did average business, while Puspa released along with it, was the lone outlier that was a superhit. As per PVR’s own admission, in spite of high expectations of blockbuster performance from movies in the pipeline, they do not expect a full recovery for another six months. “Our sense is, by December of this year, where we have had a big run of films, effectively recovery should take shape fully because you must also understand that in a country like India, there is a very large segment of people who show up at the theatres only once or twice a year,” Nitin Sood, CFO of PVR, said. This whole struggle is inextricably tied to already low ad revenue, which is a big part of revenue for any multiplex business. Both PVR and INOX, despite a strong movie pipeline in Q1, have not yet reached their pre-Covid ad revenue figures. Reaching there will depend on good content. “Good content is very important for a client, because he knows that content will have footfall and there will be more people seeing his ads. There will be more eyeballs watching his ads,” Jain added. Till the movies release, it will be a wait-and-watch game to see if Bollywood delivers the blockbusters that the theatres desperately need. Bollywood’s flops now pose a big risk to multiplex chains

Blockbuster films like KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, Bhool Bhulaiya 2 and Doctor Strange compelled audiences to step back into theatres between April and June. INOX, on Wednesday, reported its highest ever quarterly revenue, EBITDA and net profit since its inception two decades ago. PVR, which announced its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/pvrs-q1-show-driven-by-pricier-tickets-and-blockbusters-like-kgf-2-rr-bhool-bhulaiya/articleshow/93027576.cms">quarterly results two weeks ago</a>, had also achieved the same milestones in the quarter ending June 30. However, PVR has managed to outperform INOX in the April-June quarter of 2022 with almost double the revenue. INOX’s revenue stood at ₹589 crore in the April to June quarter of 2022, representing an astronomical 22-fold jump from ₹26 crore revenue reported a year earlier. The company also managed to turn its year-ago quarter’s net loss of ₹101 crore into a profit of ₹74 crore for Q1 of FY2023. Its net profit stood at ₹53 crore, compared to a ₹220 crore loss in the Q1 of FY2021. Notably, PVR and INOX are in the middle of a merger to create the largest multiplex chain with more than 1,500 screens in India. Four brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan — are also of the opinion that a strong movie pipeline can change the fate of movie theatre chains like PVR and INOX as they attract more footfall. PVR manages to outperform INOX in Q1 of FY2023

While the merger was announced last March, the record date for the scheme of amalgamation between the two multiplex operators happened in February 2023. The combined entity will start trading with the name PVR-INOX on exchanges in March 2023 and their combined financials would be reported from 4QFY23. The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across 350 properties, in 110 cities. “PVR-INOX now controls 18% screen share (43% share in multiplex screens in India) and 30% box-office share (over 50% share of multiplex box office). The merged entity commands the highest multiplex market share in all key regions of India. PVR-INOX would become the fifth-largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count with the highest number of admissions per screen (around 127,000 admissions/screen in 2019),” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years. “Capex per year would be ₹8-8.5 billion (₹800-850 crore). Over 40% new screen openings will come from the South as it remains underpenetrated,” said the report. Analysts say that the merged entity has no real competitor and should remain focused on strengthening its position at the cost of single-screen theatres and smaller chains. Post-Covid, we have witnessed a clear dichotomy in box-office performance, with a high proportion of movies turning out to be duds; we believe the main culprit is the sub-par content quality, punctured by the weak critic and audience reviews,” said a report by Emkay Global. Only select movies with differentiated offerings have managed to taste success at the box office. As we have emphasised in the past too, Bollywood’s recovery is critical to box-office collections, with regional and Hollywood contribution being only sporadic in nature,” said the report. Bollywood continues to witness poor movie performance with most movies including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Goodbye and Uunchai, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus not meeting expectations except for Drishyam 2 and Pathaan. “Going ahead too, we believe that star power alone cannot drive collections, if there is no differentiating factor in the movie,” said the Emkay Global report. In Q3 FY23, only one Bollywood movie i.e Drishyam 2 managed to break the ₹100 crore box office barrier. “CY22 has been one of the worst years for Bollywood, with very few movies finding traction. A mere 7% of the major movies that were released in the CY21/22 managed to recover their investment and yielded some profit. Prior to Covid, this was close to 30%, with more than 40% of movies doing well in CY19,” said a report by Emkay. PVR-INOX, now fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally, awaits good movies

PVR’s Q1 show driven by pricier tickets and blockbusters

On a sequential basis, the telco reported an 89% increase in net profit from ₹1,588 crore in Q3, higher than analyst <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/bharti-airtel-q4-preview-revenue-growth-to-be-modest-flat-arpu-eyed/articleshow/100253344.cms">estimates</a> of a 54% rise. Airtel’s revenue in the March quarter rose 14% YoY and 0.5% sequentially to ₹36,009 crore, in line with analyst estimates. For FY23, Airtel’s net profit nearly doubled to ₹8,346 crore, while revenue rose 19.4% to ₹1.39 lakh crore. Its spectrum usage charges fell 6% YoY to ₹2,828 crore while its overall expenses rose 12% to ₹17,312 crore in the March quarter. Airtel’s average revenue per user (ARPU) remained unchanged at ₹193 in Q4 when compared with the December quarter, while its 4G subscriber base increased to 224.1 million from 216.7 million in Q3. Overall, its 4G subscribers as a percentage of total subscribers stood at 67% in Q4, up from 62% in the same period a year ago. “Our focus on acquiring quality customers has resulted in 7.4 million new 4G customers, as we exit the quarter with an industry leading ARPU of ₹193,” said Gopal Vittal, managing director, Bharti Airtel. Also aiding Airtel’s ARPU growth in the March quarter was a 20.5% YoY increase in data consumption at 20.3GB per user per month. In terms of margins, too, Airtel reported a moderate uptick during the March quarter. The telco’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) margins rose to 52.2% in Q4, from 50.76% a year ago. “A simple strategy and our relentless focus on execution has ensured that we close the year with market share gains across all businesses. <ul><li>INOX recently launched Megaplex, an 11-screen threatre in Mumbai to elevate the movie-going experience.</li><li>The multiplex plans to launch Megaplexes in more cities, starting with Lucknow in an attempt to bring people out of their homes to watch movies in theatres instead of at home.</li><li> Alok Tandon, CEO, <keyword id="105311" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="INOX-Leisure">INOX Leisure</keyword> walks us through INOX’s performance and why it is strengthening its experiential offerings.</li></ul>Multiplex chain INOX Leisure recently launched Megaplex, an 11-screen theatre in Mumbai’s Inorbit Mall, Malad, with an aim of transforming movie-watching into a more experiential experience and to further increase its engagement with its audiences. With 1,600 seats, INOX is said to have invested between Rs 50-60 crore. It will offer 6 different movie viewing formats, IMAX, ScreenX, MX4D, Onyx LED, Kiddles and INSIGNIA. In a recent conversation with Alok Tandon, CEO, INOX Leisure, we tried to understand the reasons behind the organization’s increased focus on experiential, and also what the future of INOX would look like, and what role marketing will play in it. Edited excerpts: Q) Why was this a good time to launch Megaplex? While the criticality of the role of ‘content’ in the cinema exhibition industry is massive, we were determined to play our part and offer an even more engaging experience to our guests. We were therefore, determined to up our experience game by creating massive experience-led entertainment destinations. Grand and chic INOX multiplexes took shape in Bangalore, Kolkata, Jaipur, Hyderabad and many other cities, but what really set the tone for the new decade was the recent launch of INOX Megaplex at Mumbai. Apart from being an architectural masterpiece in the cinema space, Megaplex also comes with innovative F&amp;B concepts and an elaborate gourmet selection. Q) Why did you choose to launch Megaplex in Mumbai? What other cities are you planning to expand to? The entire country looks up to Mumbai as the heart of Indian cinema, and putting up a destination like this in Mumbai was a matter of huge pride for us. Our next Megaplex is coming soon in Lucknow in the Phoenix Market City. We have strategically decided to make massive experience-driven entertainment destinations as a part of our growth strategy, and you would see more Megaplexes rolling out over the years. Q) What are your expansion plans for INOX in terms of number of screen? What is your vision for INOX? We currently stand at 617 screens across 68 cities in 147 multiplexes. We have a robust pipeline of over 900 screens that are going to come up across the country. As the passion for the giant screen experience is evenly spread across the country, so are our expansion plans. You will see INOX coming up in the highly urban locales to non-metros, to Tier II and Tier III centers as well. Q) A lot of youngsters are choosing to watch content on OTT now. How are you enticing this group of audience? The preference for watching content on OTT platforms is on the rise but it has not impacted the footfalls in cinemas so far. If the footfall figures are anything to go by, I believe OTT and cinemas are going to co-exist, with the quantum of content consumption increasing with increasing availability. We will continue to entice film patrons with the various formats we offer and by driving our experience strategy rigorously through luxury, service and technology aspects. We want to ‘de-couch’ Indian cinema lovers with supreme standards of cinema viewing experience, and we have done it with a lot of success. We have also innovated a lot on our F&amp;B services. On the marketing front, we have adopted a lot of experiential marketing initiatives to develop a stronger bond with our guests. Whether we are promoting a movie, or hosting a special screening, we have added a lot of fervor to our events. We have also successfully ventured into screening of concert films like BTS, Westlife and Metallica. We have also done reasonably well with Live screening of sporting events and brand alliances with various sporting leagues including the NBA, IPL and the PBL. We were one of the three multiplex operators in the world that got the screening rights of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Q) How are you making the entire experience more seamless, in terms of tickets bookings, cancellations etc? A lot of effort has gone into making the ticketing and food ordering experience seamless and digitally-enabled. The aspiration was to remain available at the guests’ fingertips the moment they make the decision of going for a movie. Our redesigned app is intuitive and simple to navigate, much like our website. You can avail food combos at offer prices while making an online booking. In case you are visiting the multiplex without a booking, you will be greeted with interactive touch screens, which allow you to book tickets, order food and make the payment, all at one go. Even our box offices are enabled with touch screens, making the transaction faster and transparent, with a personal touch. The endeavor is to ensure that the guests do not have to stand in queues while entering or while ordering the food. Q) Tell us a bit about INOX's performance in this financial year? Did the general industry slowdown lead to lesser footfall? FY20 has been great so far. H1 saw us reporting the best growth in the industry, on footfalls, at 24%, on revenue at 30%, EBITDA at 48% and on PAT at 89%, all on a year-on-year basis. Our occupancy too grew by 319 base points in the same period. We have added 46 screens and 9 properties so far. The need and urge for entertainment, and that too cinematic entertainment has stood the test of time for decades in our country, and is unparalleled. Regardless of the state of the economy, going to the cinema is a family celebration or social event, and we Indians never compromise on celebrating, and that is what inspires us to welcome them at our properties and serve them better.

Google Wallet launched in India – store your loyalty cards, boarding passes and more

Jio-bp, the fuel retailing joint venture of Reliance Industries Ltd and UK's bp Plc, on Tuesday launched an additive-laced premium <keyword id="6356109" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="diesel" source="Orion">diesel</keyword> that the company said gives improved mileage and gives a saving of up to Rs 1.1 lakh per truck. The premium diesel is priced at rates lower than normal or additive-free diesel sold by public sector (PSU) competition. "Jio-bp today announced the launch of its diesel with ACTIVE technology, set to elevate diesel standards for Indian consumers. "The newly launched additivised diesel, available across the company's network will yield annual savings of up to Rs 1.1 lakh per vehicle to truckers owing to (up to) 4.3 per cent improved fuel economy," it said in a statement. The new diesel is being sold at the Jio-bp outlet in Navi Mumbai for Rs 91.30 per litre, while the normal diesel at PSU petrol pumps in the area cost Rs 92.28 a litre. This new high performance diesel offering will be available at all Jio-bp outlets and "will be offered at regular prices with no additional cost for the first time ever in the Indian market," it said. Diesel with ACTIVE technology helps reduce the risk of unscheduled maintenance caused by dirt build up and removes existing dirt from critical engine parts and protects against its build up with ongoing use. It is designed to work across a range of commercial vehicles, and with ongoing use it offers a variety of benefits to drivers and fleet owners. It helps restore and maintain the power of the engine with ongoing use while also reducing the risk of unscheduled vehicle maintenance, it added.
