IIT-Kharagpur outperformed 276 institutes from across the country and maximum awards it won were of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=medical">medical</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=biotech">biotech</a> innovations. The appreciations were in engineering category.<br />

"After four rounds of evaluation, 19 teams have been selected for innovation awards and 24 for appreciation. Of the 19 awards, 15 awardees in Medical and Biotech innovations category will get Department of Biotechnology sponsored (BITAC-SRISTI) grant of Rs 15 lakh each to further their prototypes," an IIT release said.<br />

GYTI 2016 was a pan-India competition with over 2,363 innovation entries in 50 technology domains from 276 institutes from 26 states and two Union Territories.<br />

IIT-Kharagpur shows how to innovate, bags maximum laurels at innovation awards

The supply price of <keyword id="9485939" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword> to the government of <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> at ₹150 a dose is a non-competitive price and clearly not sustainable in the long run. Hence a higher price in private markets is required to offset part of the costs, <keyword id="149108" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Biotech">Bharat Biotech</keyword> said on Tuesday.<br /><br />It said there are live examples of such pricing policies where Human Papilloma virus vaccine is priced for GAVI supplies at $4.5/dose (₹320), but is also available in the private market at ₹3,500. <br /><br />Rotavirus vaccines are supplied to the Govt of India at ₹60/dose, but is also available in the private market at ₹1,700/dose. The prices for COVID-19 vaccines internationally have varied between $10 to $37/dose, (₹730 - ₹2,700/dose). <br /><br />On why Coaxin is more expensive for the private sector, Bharat Biotech said another key point of discussion has been about pricing our vaccines for private sector players which is significantly higher than that given to governments and large procurement agencies. This is purely due to fundamental business reasons, ranging from low procurement volumes, high distribution costs and retail margins among few others. <br /><br />As directed by the Govt of India, less than 10% of our total production of Covaxin to date has been supplied to private hospitals, while most of the remaining quantity was supplied to State and Central Governments. In such a scenario the weighted average price of Covaxin for all supplies realized by Bharat Biotech is less than ₹250/dose. Going forward, 75% of the capacity will be supplied to State and Central Governments with only 25% going to private hospitals. <br /><br />Unlike most medicines and therapeutics, vaccines are provided free of cost by the Govt of India to all eligible Indian citizens. "Thus, the procurement of vaccines by private hospitals is optional and not mandatory, albeit it gives a choice to citizens who are willing to pay for better convenience. In our view, the question of product pricing is only of extraneous interest to all concerned, especially when the same vaccine is made available free of cost", Bharat Biotech said that for the private sector it is optional. <br /><br />Bharat Biotech has so far invested over ₹500 crores at risk from its own resources for product development, clinical trials and setting up of manufacturing facilities for Covaxin. The support from The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) was with respect to provision of the SARS CoV2 virus, animal studies, virus characterization, test kits and partial funding for clinical trial sites. In return for this valuable support, Bharat Biotech will pay royalties to ICMR and the National Institute of Virology (NIV), based on product sales. Royalties are also payable to Virovax towards the licensure of IMDG agonist molecules, it said. <br /><br />Bharat Biotech is investing in new facilities and repurposing existing ones across several states in India for enhancing the production of Covaxin. <br /><br />It is pertinent to mention here that the urgent need to set up a significant number of manufacturing facilities and to divert existing ones for Covaxin has resulted in reduced production of other vaccines at our facilities, leading to loss in revenues. <br /><br />It added that low product price realization dispirits domestic R&amp;D. Companies such as Bharat Biotech, which are innovators with specialized expertise in product development, and large scale manufacturing, should be allowed to maintain a differential pricing strategy for Governments and private hospitals. It is distressing to see that a large country like India has a very basic level of innovation in vaccines and pharmaceutical products, it added. <br /><br />It may well be argued that the low-price realization for home-grown innovators constraints innovation and product development in India. The drug, which is based off of CRISPR technology, led to a maximum 96% reduction in harmful liver proteins that cause transthyretin amyloidosis.</p><p>The data from Intellia represented the first-ever in-human data from a clinical trial studying the potential effect of gene editing technology. Other biotech companies working on CRISPR-based therapeutics soared, with <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/beam-stock">Beam Therapeutics</a>, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/edit-stock">Editas Medicine</a>, and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/crsp-stock">CRISPR Therapeutics</a> soaring as much as 20%, 20%, and 10%, respectively. </p><p>The surge helped Ark Invest's flagship <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/ark-innovation-etf-us00214q1040">Disruptive Innovation ETF</a>, as well as its <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/ark-genomic-revolution-etf-us00214q3020">Genomic Revolution ETF,</a> both of which own all four of the CRISPR-based biotech stocks. Both ETFs were up as much as 4% in Monday trades.</p><p>The surge added weight to Wood's conviction that the next "FANG" stocks <a href="https://businessinsider.mx/editas-surges-50-as-ark-founder-cathie-wood-sees-genomic-stocks-driving-returns-for-the-next-5-years/">would likely come from the gene editing space.</a></p><p>"The biggest upside surprises are going to come from the genomic space, and that's because the convergence of DNA sequencing, artificial intelligence, and gene therapies are going to cure disease," Wood said in an interview with Bloomberg at the end of last year. </p><p>Wood's bet on CRISPR technology stocks has helped aid a continued turnaround for the ARK ETFs. The flagship Disruptive Innovation ETF is now up 34% since its low in mid-May. The ETF is now down just 19% from its record high reached in mid-February.</p><p>Between both the Genomic Revolution and Disruptive Innovation ETFs, ARK Invest owns nearly $2.5 billion worth of the four CRISPR-focused biotech stocks, based on Ark's daily holding reports as of Monday. </p>

Those companies could also be targets for M&amp;A. </li><li>Read on to see the companies with the top 30 fundraising rounds in that time period, which could be IPO candidates or M&amp;A targets.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></li></ul><p>It's a good time to be a private biotech company.</p><p>Venture capital funds have been flowing into the industry, prompting record levels of private biotech financings, according to a new analysis from Jefferies analyst Michael Yee and his team.</p><p>A large crop of those private companies could be set to go public in 2020 or 2021, or could even get acquired, Yee and team said.</p><p>"It will also be interesting to see how many of these may lead to M&amp;A instead of IPOs," the Jefferies analysts noted. In the last few months, two private biotechs - cancer drugmaker <a href="https://investors.merck.com/news/press-release-details/2019/Merck-to-Acquire-Peloton-Therapeutics-Bolstering-Oncology-Pipeline/default.aspx">Peloton Therapeutics</a> and cell-therapy company <a href="https://media.bayer.com/baynews/baynews.nsf/id/Bayer-acquires-BlueRock-Therapeutics-to-build-leading-position-in-cell-therapy">BlueRock Therapeutics</a> - were both sold to big pharma companies. </p><p>Being a biotech company in the business of developing new drugs is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-in-biotech-stocks-fidelitys-eirene-kontopoulos-2019-4">notoriously risky</a> and expensive. Ballooning capital needs can propel biotechs to either go public or sell themselves before they're even selling a single drug. </p><p>The Jefferies team's predictions are rooted in what happened in 2017, when private financings gave momentum to a wave of IPOs in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-biotech-ipos-of-2018-2018-9">2018</a> and <a href="https://endpts.com/with-4-more-biotech-ipos-due-to-wrap-up-q2-how-is-the-class-of-2019-faring/">2019</a>. The market has also been strong for biotech companies since the sequencing of the human genome in the early 2000s and especially since the passage of the landmark healthcare law the Affordable Care Act in 2010, they said. </p><p>Well-funded VCs are betting heavily on biotechs based on factors like management teams and innovative ideas, but they're also underestimating how much risk is in the mix, Wedbush analyst David Nierengarten told Business Insider.</p><p>"I have seen this trend before, and it ends poorly," he said. </p><p>The Jefferies analysis took a look at the top 30 fundraising rounds between May 2017 and August 2019. But flying under the world's radar is Switzerland, where inventions like <a href="http://info.solarimpulse.com/en/our-adventure/solar-impulse-2/#.Vd9G2dNVhHy" target="_blank">a solar plane that just completed the longest solo-flight ever without fuel</a> are born.</p><p>And while Europe was busy debating bitcoin's future, Switzerland already opened up the region's first bitcoin ATM earlier this year.</p><p>The country has managed to maintain its No. 1 ranking on the <a href="http://www.s-ge.com/usa/invest/en/blog/global-innovation-index-2014-switzerland-top-again" target="_blank">Global Innovation Index</a> for four years in a row.</p><p>Switzerland's résumé is definitely impressive: The country boasts the second-highest number of patents per person - second to Japan. Its residents have won more Nobel Prizes per capita than any other country. It starts very early. The Swiss have a unique dual-system of vocational education and training, or VET - <a href="http://www.s-ge.com/usa/invest/en/blog/swiss-apprenticeship-spotlight-worldskills" target="_blank">considered by many to be the best in Europe</a>.</p><h2>A practical education</h2><p>Once students in Switzerland reach the ninth grade, they can choose either to continue to upper-secondary education or to enroll in a VET program - which 70% of them do. VET is overwhelmingly popular because students study theory at school coupled with a three- to four-year apprenticeship at a company in their industry of choice. They can do anything from working on machinery to advising investors - everything a full-time employee does.</p><p>This program is an equally important investment for companies and the government as it is for the students. For starters, it helps fuel the economy, so much so that Switzerland boasts a<a href="http://www.s-ge.com/usa/invest/en/content/swiss-professional-training-key-points-glance" target="_blank"> 3.4% youth unemployment rate</a>. To put that into perspective, as of July 2015, the youth unemployment rate in the US was a staggering 11.7%.</p><p>The VET program is an important factor in maintaining Switzerland's stronghold in the tech and biotech industries as it creates highly qualified and competitive candidates for employment in the STEM fields. In fact, <a href="http://www.s-ge.com/usa/invest/en/content/swiss-innovation" target="_blank">about one-third of people in the country's research and development field</a> are graduates of the VET program.</p><h2>A diverse workforce</h2><p>But not all of the country's talent is homegrown. About a quarter of the workforce is made up of non-Swiss. High quality talent flocks to the country for its high standard of living, career and research opportunities, and education system.</p><p>Top tech and biotech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Biogen have <a href="http://www.s-ge.com/usa/invest/en/cases" target="_blank">established operations there</a> to tap into this diverse talent pool. This European country has the talent for tech innovation

(AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The biotech Moderna said Thursday it is working with the National Institutes of Health to develop a coronavirus vaccine, as the deadly virus has spread beyond China in recent days.</li><li>The effort is funded by the <a href="https://cepi.net/news_cepi/cepi-to-fund-three-programmes-to-develop-vaccines-against-the-novel-coronavirus-ncov-2019/">Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations</a>, a group started by Norway and India, the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and the World Economic Forum. </li><li>CEPI is also supporting vaccine-development efforts from the biotech Inovio and the University of Queensland</li><li>Moderna said the NIH will soon run early studies to allow for human testing, with plans to start a clinical trial in the US. Moderna did not specify a development timeline.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>As the deadly Wuhan coronavirus has spread around the world, some biotech companies have announced early work to look for a vaccine that could prevent the disease.</p><p>Moderna, a $7 billion biotech, <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200123005458/en/">on Thursday</a> announced a collaborative effort with the National Institutes of Health to use its genetic drug development platform to produce an experimental vaccine. The biotech Inovio is also working on a vaccine, as are researchers at the University of Queensland, <a href="https://cepi.net/news_cepi/cepi-to-fund-three-programmes-to-develop-vaccines-against-the-novel-coronavirus-ncov-2019/">according to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations</a>, which is funding the efforts.</p><p>None of them have said how long it might take to make a vaccine.</p><p>The Wuhan cornoavirus has infected about 600 people in China and killed 17. It's been spreading around the world, and a patient in the US is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-wuhan-coronavirus-washington-patient-small-room-robot-doctor-2020-1">currently being quarantined</a> in Everett, Washington.</p><p>Vaccines often require difficult testing in thousands of people before being allowed on market. For instance, an Ebola vaccine developed by Merck &amp; Co., one of the largest drugmakers in the world, <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2020/01/07/inside-story-scientists-produced-world-first-ebola-vaccine/">required years of clinical testing on top of about two decades of research to gain FDA approval, accoding to Stat News.</a> The agency approved the vaccine in December 2019, more than five years after a major outbreak of the Ebola virus in Africa.</p><h2>Human testing of potential vaccines</h2><p>An NIH division focused on infectious diseases will soon begin studies that would allow for the first human testing of the vaccine, Moderna said. Moderna said it plans to eventually run an early-stage human trial in the US, which would primarily test the safety of the potential vaccine.</p><p>The Food and Drug Administration reviews drugs for safety and efficacy, typically requiring companies to run multiple trials in humans that show a treatment works.</p><p>Moderna's vaccine work is being funded by CEPI a public-private partnership launced in 2017 that focuses on quickly developing vaccines to halt potential epidemics.</p><p>CEPI was started by Norway and India, the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and the World Economic Forum.</p><h2>Several biotechs are working on vaccines</h2><p><a href="http://ir.inovio.com/news-and-media/news/press-release-details/2020/Inovio-Selected-by-CEPI-to-Develop-Vaccine-Against-New-Coronavirus/default.aspx">CEPI committed up to $9 million</a> to fund Inovio's work on a Wuhan coronavirus vaccine, on top of the $56 million it previously gave the biotech for other vaccine work. The news helped send Inovio's stock up 6.1%.</p><p>Christopher Raymond, an analyst at Piper Sandler, said investors should be cautious about betting on the vaccine work, because vaccines can take a long time to develop.</p><p>"An approval and stockpile order is likely years out," he wrote.</p><p>Novavax, a small clinical-stage biotech in Maryland, also announced plans to develop a cornoravirus vaccine earlier this week. It's funny, but it might not be accurate anymore. </p><p>Over the last two years, we analyzed 1,227 early-stage biotech startups, and we came across something interesting: Biotech is no longer limited to just therapeutics and diagnostics - it's being used to create products that solve problems in radically different industries. </p><p>Today there's a new subsector in biotech that's starting to focus on what we eat, how we take care of ourselves, and even how we manufacture products. Biotech companies are beginning to resemble traditional tech companies and build products like them. We believe that investment models traditionally applied to early-stage tech startups can now be applied to this "new biotech." </p><p>10 years ago, investing in early-stage bio-startups with less than $5 million per check was fairly risky. Back then, building these types of companies required a lot of capital, time, and a unique mix of talent: scientists, investors who take a big chunk of the company, and one or more non-founder operators that would eventually ride the company to the finish line (or lack of it). </p><p>The technological advances in the past decade have made experimentation, product development, and finding product-market fit much more accessible for this new breed of biotech startups. Decreasing costs in sequencing technologies, automation, and advances in machine learning are reshaping biotech at a foundational level. The tools and infrastructure for transforming these ideas into impactful realities have never been as efficient as they are today. </p><p>However, change doesn't happen overnight. The evolution of the biotech industry has accumulated over the last few years and is due to a combination of factors. </p><h1>1. The cost of DNA sequencing technology has significantly decreased</h1><p>The first human genome <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Genome_Project">took $2.7 billion and almost 15 years to complete</a>. In the last 11 years, this cost has dropped from $10 million to around $1,000 today. Reading the "code" of life of any living organism now costs less than a new iPhone.</p><p>As a reference, think of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law">Moore's Law</a>, the projection by Intel's co-founder Gordon Moore that computing would increase exponentially in power while <a href="https://www.nap.edu/read/11134/chapter/12#156">decreasing in cost </a>- it almost looks like a flat line put next to what happened with genome sequencing cost.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wetterstrand KA. Lab automation has made biology experiments faster, more reproducible, and cheaper</h1><p>This is an oversimplification of the innovative work scientists do, but most biology experiments consist of moving small amounts of liquid from one place to another and then spending time looking at them.</p><p>A startup can now buy an <a href="https://www.opentrons.com/">Opentrons</a> robot for just $4,500 and use a machine-vision SaaS platform to assess the results. Before this technology, one would need highly trained people moving small amounts of liquid around with a pipette and then spending hours looking through microscopes to achieve similar (potentially less accurate and less efficient) outcomes. In the lab, robots are replacing hands, and machine vision is replacing eyes. Finally, highly skilled scientists can focus on value creation rather than repetitive tasks.</p><h1>3. Artificial intelligence can replace our need for understanding </h1><p>Biology is an incredibly complex field, and even the best scientists can only understand a limited percentage of what goes on with living organisms; the most advanced, complicated, and dynamic systems ever. </p><p>Even with the monumental technological advances in the last century, we might never know for sure the correct answers to the most prominent "Why?" questions in biology.</p><p>Artificial intelligence and machine learning not only allow us to conduct experiments faster and cheaper, but they also enable us to do something that was previously impossible. We can create systems that output results without the need for understanding all the intricacies of the rules of biology.</p><h1>From infrastructure to applications</h1><p>We've seen the same signals in the past. When costs drop from their originally prohibitive levels and new sophisticated technologies become more accessible some very interesting things start happening.</p><p>When <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_4004">Intel launched the 4004</a> in 1970, it kickstarted the entire personal computer industry. When the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_protocol_suite">Internet Protocol Suite</a> was standardized in 1982, it made the internet a worldwide opportunity for entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. When the US government discontinued the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_analysis_for_the_Global_Positioning_System#Selective_availability">Selective Availability</a> for GPS in the early 2000s, companies like Uber became possible. </p><p>The access to new infrastructure allows smart, hard-working founders to leverage and build innovative applications on top of it. The realm of potential applications is extremely broad and is not limited to what can be directly foreseen. On the contrary, we can witness the creation of a very interesting category of solutions that lie at the edge of the newly opened infrastructure and that oftentimes cross industry boundaries. A great example is Uber and the GPS: Though not a direct application, today's tech giant leveraged the technology that constitutes a key layer for its product. It wasn't easily predictable at the time, but Uber is now <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/uber-jackpot-inside-one-of-the-greatest-startup-investments-of-all-time-11557496421">"one of the greatest startup investments of all time."</a></p><p>We're entering the applications era of biotech. An era where investing relatively small checks in young biotech startups is not only possible but could generate outsized returns. Lower amounts of capital can take biotech companies to inflection points that will change their risk profile. This new investment model is possible because biotech products are not just traditional ones anymore. There's a new group of startups working on applications at the edge of biotech.</p><h1>A tech investment model for the "new biotech"</h1><p>Good investors capture industry changes and capitalize on them; great investors find treasures where nobody's looking and generate outsized returns. </p><p>Although the "new biotech" startups can develop products cheaper and faster, allowing for iterations and shorter feedback cycles, it might seem like a big leap to compare tech products to biotech ones. What's missing from this picture is that not only is the product development more agile, at the same time the products themselves are different: they are "at the edge of biotech." They rely on an underlying biological layer, on top of which the tech is built. New biotech products are built with an engineering approach; they tap into new industries and face not so much scientific challenges as they do tech and commercial ones. Looking a lot more like tech companies, they also require similar check sizes to reach the next inflection point.</p><p>We're at the beginning of something new. The application era of biology promises to bring a wave of new companies that tech investors can understand and add value to, without having to drastically alter their investment model. </p><p>This shouldn't eclipse the fact that biotech still means biology, and biology is complex, slow, and sometimes unpredictable. Now's the time to invest in biotech, according to VCs who've analyzed 1,227 early-stage biotech startups. Here's why they're so sure.

The list includes 61 early-stage companies whose technologies are "world changing." They're from, yes, Silicon Valley, but there are also several from emerging markets in Africa and South America, as well as Europe.</p><p>As industry-watchers may expect, many of the companies listed are utilizing artificial intelligence, as well as a number of biotech firms and blockchain technologies. </p><p>Here are the 61 companies the World Economic Forum considers pioneers.</p>

Hyderabad, Jun 3 () The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) will provide a fund of USD 14.1 million to a consortium, comprising Bharat Biotech and International Vaccine Institute (IVI), for vaccine manufacturing and clinical development of a two-dose live-inactivated vaccine (BBV87) against Chikungunya. <p> CEPI is an innovative partnership between public, private, philanthropic, and civil organisations, launched at Davos in 2017, to develop vaccines to stop future epidemics. </p><p> This grant is supported by the European Unions (EU) Horizon 2020 programmethrough an existing framework partnership agreement with CEPI, a press release from the city-based vaccine manufacturer said on Wednesday. </p><p> The consortium will be further supported with a grant of up to USD 2 million from the centre's Ind-CEPI initiative which will fund the set-up of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacturing facilities for the vaccine in India, and the subsequent manufacture of clinical trial materials, it said. </p><p> In addition to manufacturing, the partnering agreement will finance a multi-centre Phase 2/3 adaptive clinical trial to be conducted by IVI in Colombia, Panama and Thailand which will provide crucial data about the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine candidate. </p><p> "The partnership will build on Bharat Biotech's experience of developing and supplying affordable vaccines, and WHO prequalification procedures, to ensure affordable access to the vaccine in countries where Chikungunya is endemic, in line with CEPI's core commitment to equitable access," it said. </p><p> The investment is part of CEPI's third call for proposals which was launched in January 2019. </p> Since the launch of this call, over USD 80 million of CEPI core funding has been committed to three Chikungunya vaccine candidates and two Rift Valley Fever vaccine candidates. 24 biotech startups that are poised to take off

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>ISIS, or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has gotten lots of attention for the terror it has brought to the Middle East.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, this has attracted the wrong kind of attention to companies that coincidentally <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ann-summers-isis-lingerie-2014-8">share the same name</a> as the extremist group.</p>
<p>Take ISIS Pharmaceuticals. This $4.3 billion biotech firm surged 10% today, and it's up 43% in the last three months. According to Nasdaq, the stock price crossed <a href="http://www.nasdaq.com/article/isis-pharmaceuticals-isis-shares-cross-above-200-dma-cm384200">above its 200-day moving average</a> for the first time since early spring.</p>
<p>ISIS Pharma has nothing to do with the terrorist group. According to <a href="http://www.isispharm.com/About-Isis/index.htm">their website</a>, ISIS Pharma develops new drugs to "treat patients who have significant unmet medical needs."</p>
<p>There's no obvious direct explanation for ISIS Pharma's rally today.</p>
<p>However, it's worth noting that biotechnology stocks in general have been doing pretty well this year. The iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology Index ETF (IBB) is up a whopping 21% since the beginning of the year. And in recent months we've heard biotech firms like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kite-pharma-surges-after-non-hodgkins-results-2014-8">Kite</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/achillion-pharmaceutical-liver-drug-trial-2014-8">Achillion</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intercept-pharmaceuticals-shares-explode-2014-8">Intercept</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tekmira-shares-spike-after-fda-partial-hold-announcement-2014-8">Tekmira</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gilead-q2-earnings-beat-expectations-2014-7">Gilead</a> all announce good news regarding the innovative drugs that they're developing or marketing.</p>
<p>IBB climbed 1.1% today. KITE surged 17%.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Shares of these publicly traded biotech firms tend to be very volatile, as their businesses often rely on the unlikely breakthroughs of a very narrow pipeline of drugs.</p>
<p>"Lots of sophisticated investors purchase biotech companies that have no earnings and are regularly raising cash to stay in business," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/biotech-lottery-principle-2014-8">stock market expert Ed Yardeni</a> said. "These investors do so knowing that the outcomes are binary: The companies they invest in will either find a cure for a disease or they won't. Their new drugs will either be approved by the FDA or they won't. They might be acquired for a huge premium or they might not, or might go out of business."</p>
<p>Today's 10% move in ISIS Pharma appears to be about improving sentiment towards the company's drug pipeline.</p>

A Company Called ISIS Had A Massive Day On The Stock Market

<ul><li><strong>Despite the S&amp;P 500's year-to-date gain of 24%, <keyword id="12095165" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="biotech-stocks" source="Orion">biotech stocks</keyword> are down more than 22%.</strong></li><li><strong>That big divergence in performance has led to a rough year for biotech-focused <keyword id="11931680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hedge-funds" source="Orion">hedge funds</keyword>.</strong></li><li><strong>These 5 hedge funds have suffered big losses on their <keyword id="11908912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="biotech" source="Orion">biotech</keyword> investments this year, according to The Wall Street Journal. </strong></li></ul><p>Biotech stocks were all the rage last year after COVID-19 vaccine breakthroughs from mRNA companies like <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/mrna-stock">Moderna</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bntx-stock">BioNTech</a> helped illustrate to investors the potential of betting on innovative drug companies.</p><p>But fast forward to 2021, and an ongoing decline in the biotech sector has led to a terrible year of returns for some hedge funds that solely invest in the space, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Fhedge-funds-suffer-big-losses-on-biotech-rout-11638727155">a report from The Wall Street Journal.</a></p><p>The <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/spdr-sp-biotech-etf-us78464a8707">SPDR S&amp;P Biotech ETF</a> is down more than 22% year-to-date, representing nearly the exact opposite of the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500's</a> 24% gain over the same time period. Regulatory concerns surrounding Congress limiting drug pricing, combined with a surge in supply of early stage biotech IPOs has outweighed the successes seen by other successful drug companies.</p><p>Shares of BioNTech and Moderna are up 270% and 160% year-to-date, respectively, but those gains have done little to boost the performance of these five biotech-focused hedge funds, according to The WSJ. </p><p><strong>1. Perceptive Advisors</strong></p><p><strong>Year-to-date gains through November for its main fund:</strong> -30%<br /><strong>Total Firm AUM:</strong> ~$9 billion</p><p>Perceptive Advisors' largest position as of the third quarter of 2021 is <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/lian-stock">LianBio</a>, which has dropped 39% over the past week. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/mrtx-stock">Mirati Therapeutics</a> is the hedge fund's second largest position, according to its 13F filing. Mirati is down 41% year-to-date.</p><p><strong>2. OrbiMed Partners</strong></p><p><strong>Year-to-date gains through November for one of its hedge funds:</strong> -40%<br /><strong>Total Firm AUM:</strong> ~$18 billion</p><p>OrbiMed's largest position is <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/swtx-stock">SpringWorks Therapeutics</a>, according to its 13F filing. SpringWorks is down 11% year-to-date. OrbiMed's second largest position, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/prld-stock">Prelude Therapeutics</a>, is down 81% year-to-date.</p><p><strong>3. Logos Capital</strong></p><p><strong>Year-to-date gains through November for one of its hedge funds:</strong> -25%<br /><strong>Total firm AUM:</strong> ~$1.4 billion</p><p>Logos' largest position is <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/alxo-stock">ALX Oncology</a>, according to its 13F filing. ALX Oncology is down 65% year-to-date, while its second largest position, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/olma-stock">Olema Pharmaceuticals</a>, is down 79% year-to-date.</p><p><strong>4. Cormorant Asset Management</strong></p><p>Cormorant Asset Management lost 10% in the month of November, adding to double digit losses it has already seen earlier in the year, according to the report. </p><p><strong>Total Firm AUM:</strong> ~$2.5 billion</p><p>Cormorant's largest position is <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/eras-stock">Erasca</a>, according to its 13F filing. Erasca is down 31% year-to-date, while its second largest position, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tptx-stock">Turning Point Therapeutics</a>, is down 71% year-to-date.</p><p><strong>5. Consonance Capital</strong></p><p>Consonance Capital decided to close one of its billion-dollar hedge funds in October after suffering heavy losses, according to the report. A spokesman for Consonance told The WSJ that a healthcare private-equity fund it operates has been unaffected by the sell-off in biotech stocks. </p><p>Top holdings in Consonance Capital, according to its 13F filing, included SpringWorks Therapeutics and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tndm-stock">Tandem Diabetes Care.</a></p><p>"It's been a very challenging year," Cormorant founder Bihua Chen said, according to The WSJ report.</p><p>But there have been some bright spots in the biotech hedge fund sector, with EcoR1 Capital delivering positive returns for its clients so far this year.
