Cryptocurrency lending company Celsius Network, that recently laid off 150 employees, has now filed for bankruptcy in the US amid extreme market conditions. The platform said that it initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings to provide it with the opportunity to stabilise its business and consummate a comprehensive restructuring transaction that maximises value for all stakeholders. Celsius said late on Wednesday that it has $167 million in cash on hand, which will provide ample liquidity to support certain operations during the restructuring process. The platform, which last month paused all withdrawals, was last valued at $3.25 billion. "Without a pause, the acceleration of withdrawals would have allowed certain customers -- those who were first to act -- to be paid in full while leaving others behind to wait for Celsius to harvest value from illiquid or longer-term asset deployment activities before they receive a recovery," said the company. Alex Mashinsky, Co-Founder and CEO, Celsius, said that this is the right decision for its community and company. "I am confident that when we look back at the history of Celsius, we will see this as a defining moment, where acting with resolve and confidence served the community and strengthened the future of the company," he said. Meanwhile, the founders of another bankrupt cryptocurrency hedge fund <keyword id="14202326" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="three-arrows-capital" source="Orion">Three Arrows Capital</keyword> (3AC) have vanished and the officials charged with liquidating the company were looking for their whereabouts. The mega fund, founded by Credit Suisse traders <keyword id="14355016" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zhu-su" source="Orion">Zhu Su</keyword> and <keyword id="835976" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kyle-davies" source="Orion">Kyle Davies</keyword>, once managed an estimated $10 billion in assets. The Singapore-based 3AC filed for bankruptcy in the US earlier this month to protect its assets from creditors. Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani wants crypto in India to be treated as an asset class but not a currency

<ul><li>The Securities and Exchange Board of India (<keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword>) has warned <keyword id="6357979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-funds" source="Orion">mutual funds</keyword> to hold off from launching any crypto-centred offerings until regulations come in.</li><li>India’s cryptocurrency bill was supposed to be discussed during the previous session of Parliament earlier this month, but did not make it to the table.</li><li>Invesco Mutual Fund has already delayed the launch of its crypto-based exchange-traded fund (ETF) and Navi Mutual Fund’s application is still pending approval from SEBI. </li></ul>India’s market watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), wants mutual funds to wait it out before coming up with new fund offers (NFOs) based on <keyword id="6368079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-assets" source="Orion">crypto assets</keyword>. According to SEBI Chairman Ajay Tyagi, mutual funds should not be making such investments until there’s a law in place to regulate the industry. And, as things stand, India’s Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill (2021) is still pending approval from the Cabinet — the highest decision making authority in the country led by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. “It is prudent for regulated entities with public markets exposure or focus, or any form of public solicitation, to wait for additional clarity regarding the legality or definition of digital assets as assets or securities or commodities in India,” Nitin Sharma, partner at Antler India and blockchain lead for Antler Global, told Business Insider. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Caught in limbo" comment="subhead" text="Caught in limbo">Caught in limbo</cmsannotation> The warning from SEBI comes after asset management company Invesco Mutual Fund <a href="https://www.invescomutualfund.com/docs/default-source/default-document-library/press-release---blockchain.pdf?sfvrsn=80e88ac2_0">delayed</a> the launch of its blockchain fund — the first of its kind in India — due to legislative uncertainty, even though they already have the green stamp from SEBI. “A lot of HNIs, family offices and retail investors will be drawn to such options because they are more comfortable with indirect exposure right now, even at a cost, versus dealing directly with digital assets,” said Sharma. Invesco isn’t the only mutual fund in India wanting to dip its two in the crypto space. Earlier this month, Navi Mutual Fund also filed a draft with SEBI for a Blockchain Index Fund of Funds (FoF), which will track the IndxxBlockchain Index. The IndxxBlockchain Index, however, index doesn’t track crypto assets directly. Instead, it tracks mainstream companies like Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and others that have some crypto activity. The index also includes Indian IT giants like Infosys, Wipro, and TCS. “As and when this space matures, we can definitely expect multiple mutual fund houses coming up with Blockchain specific funds. India’s market watchdog warns mutual funds to stay away from crypto assets at least until regulations come in

The proposal sought to prohibit people in the EU from using POW currencies. While the proposal has now failed, regulations are still expected on the trading, mining, and use of cryptocurrencies in the region. The Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) bill, which was voted against, had 126 articles and a detailed plan for regulating crypto assets within the EU. The POW system has been widely reported to be energy-intensive since crypto mines can consume as much power as a data centre. According to the <a href="https://ccaf.io/cbeci/index">Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index</a>, Bitcoin mining consumes 133.65 TWh of power every year, which is more than the total amount of power consumed by many small countries. This energy consumption has been a key concern for many countries, including China, which banned <keyword id="6289215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-mining" source="Orion">crypto mining</keyword> within its borders last year. The Cambridge Index, mentioned above, notes that Bitcoin mining would rank 27th in the world in terms of electricity consumption if it was a country in itself. In contrast, a comparatively newer form of crypto mining — called proof-of-stake (POS) — is said to be more energy-efficient. European Union votes against banning Bitcoin-like cryptos that use proof-of-work method

<ul><li>Indian government has banned over 250 <keyword id="6022999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chinese-apps">Chinese apps</keyword> over the last year, due to the geopolitical crisis with the neighbouring country.</li><li>The ban on Chinese apps impacted the short video segment the most, as it found itself in a void with the absence of top two players in the segment.</li><li>While many alternatives have emerged to give a tough competition to <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword>, any real competition to PUBG still does not exist.</li></ul>You can now find Vassundhara Pandita, a former TikTok creator, entertaining about 4.5 million users on <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s Sharechat-owned Moj app. Just like her, thousands of Indian creators have set their camps on different short video apps that came into existence in the past one year, after the government of India decided to ban <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/checkout-the-name-of-the-chinese-banned-apps-in-india/articleshow/76696132.cms">59 Chinese apps</a> on this day (June 29). The banned apps not only included TikTok, the biggest short video platform in the world with a user base of 200+ million in India alone, but its alternatives Likee and Vigo as well. Vigo was owned by TikTok’s Chinese parent ByteDance that was supposed to be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/ad-tech/news/bytedance-shuts-down-vigo-video-in-india-to-focus-on-other-businesses/articleshow/76382018.cms">shut by October 2020</a> to direct users towards TikTok, but all these efforts were futile. This is how TikTok creators’ hunt began to find the perfect Indian alternative that would help them continue entertaining millions of users and keep the flow of income running. But the first priority on the list was to redirect their followers to other social media platforms, most popularly <keyword id="819905" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword>. “I had to make short videos on my TikTok and YouTube [channels] to direct my followers to my Instagram handle,” says Vassundhara, who had more than five million followers on TikTok and goes by the username ‘@__vassundhara__’ on Instagram. As expected, Vassundhara and many other creators did lose their followers in this reshuffle, but thankfully finding the next stage turned out to be a little simpler. <h2 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;">Indian digital businesses fill up TikTok void</h2> Well established digital businesses were already on to finding their way to dominate the Indian short video platform, which was suddenly left with a void with the exit of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/slideshows/top-ten-most-downloaded-apps-in-india/slidelist/72977234.cms">top two players </a>-- TikTok and Likee From Sharechat to Dailyhunt, MXPlayer, Gaana, Zee5, you name it and they were already set to launch their Made-In-India offering. A few months later, even YouTube and Instagram decided to grab on to this opportunity and launch their respective hypershots entertainment offering in India. So, the competition was on and it was a pretty hot one. But Indian platforms did fairly well for themselves in this highly competitive market. Just like TikTok, many of these Indian alternatives have set a monetisation practice in place for these creators. Each creator on these platforms, with a specific number of followers and reach, is paid a certain undisclosed amount. Besides this, they are also allowed to take any paid promotional partnerships in their personal capacity without having to share their income with the platforms. There are only three shortcomings to the Indian alternatives at the moment. First, the limited market compared to TikTok that had its presence across the globe. Second, the limited market is further divided among the rival brands. Third, the not-so-great technological innovation and user-experience. While Instagram may have these problems figured out by integrating Reels into their image and video app. However, it is not a great offering in terms of the monetisation aspect. It was much easier for a content to blow up on TikTok, given its artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. It also offered more in-depth insights into the audience. On the other hand, it is much more difficult to blow up content on Instagram. “Instagram has its plus points, but it's not offering much payout to influencers at the moment… Also Instagram, I think, is focusing on a more lavish life and a glamorous one with money. Unlike TikTok, we see only one or two videos from the rural parts of India on Instagram. Moj and other Indian apps, and even TikTok for instance, push such contents as well,” Vassundhara added. However, the Indian alternatives have replaced TikTok in the eyes of content creators at least. “If TikTok comes back to India, creators will still take some time to move to the platform. As you know, a lot of controversies have happened around TikTok in India like the <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/entertainment-others/carryminati-amir-siddiqui-youtube-vs-tiktok-6411239/">YouTube roast </a>or questions over its Chinese origin. People will take some time to understand this. By the time, creators will start going back to Moj or any other platform that may establish dominance,” Vassundhara said, adding the platform offers fair income to the creators from their end. Notably, TikTok may to make a comeback to the Indian market soon, as it has <a href="https://theprint.in/tech/tiktok-definitely-hopeful-india-ban-will-be-lifted-in-talks-with-govt-to-resume-operations/683916/">reportedly</a> started discussions with the government once again. <h2 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;">India Yet To Find PUBG’s Alternative</h2>The Indian government’s attack on Chinese apps took down close to over 250 apps in the last one year. This also includes South Korean online multiplayer battle royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). PUBG had more than 175 million installations from India alone which accounted for 24% of the total installations worldwide. The ban on the online multiplayer battle royale game came due to its partnership with China-based Tencent Games. Tencent was PUBG Mobile’s licensed publisher in India. The duo ended their partnership in September 2020, and PUBG is now set to make a<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/battlegrounds-mobile-india-is-now-official-check-out-launch-date-downloads-and-more/articleshow/82427206.cms"> comeback</a> in India in a new avatar ‘BattleGrounds Mobile India’. The launch of BattleGrounds Mobile India may be subject to scrutiny as well, after a <a href="https://in.ign.com/battlegrounds-mobile-india/161110/news/battlegrounds-mobile-india-china-server-data-sharing-meity-government-meenakashi-lekhi">IGN India</a> report highlighted that the app was sending user data to China. Despite the spike in India’s e-sports segment over the last one year due to PUBG ban and Covid-19, there haven't been any direct replacements to PUBG Mobile India. Many users simply switched to the web version of the app, which was not banned. For PUBG Mobile India, Bengaluru-based nCore Games did come up with the one alternative -- Fearless And United Guards (FAUG) in September 2020. The company launched the beta version of the app earlier this week (June 27), but is yet to <a href="https://in.ign.com/fau-g-android/161446/feature/faug-team-deathmatch-map-gameplay-story-weapons-future-ncore-games">impress the Indian audience</a>. <h2 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:18pt;margin-bottom:6pt;">What other segments were disrupted due to the ban of Chinese apps?</h2> The ban on Chinese apps also promoted the Made-In-India sentiment that pushed users towards many Indian alternatives. For instance <keyword id="3518161" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="koo">Koo</keyword> and Tooter were the first to arrive as the alternatives to US-based microblogging website Twitter. While Tooter was lost in the crowd, Koo has managed to set itself to a better start, at least. The one-year-old app already has about a third (<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/will-double-headcount-lot-of-headroom-for-growing-user-base-koo-121050900174_1.html#:~:text=Koo%20has%20about%2060%20lakh,base%20and%20burgeoning%20Internet%20adoption.">6 million</a>) of Twitter's 17 million users in India. The platform is set to accelerate even further amidst Indian government’s ongoing tussle with Twitter.  He also initiated a <keyword id="63068" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="partnership">partnership</keyword> with the Centre for <keyword id="3720863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain-research-and-carnegie-melon-university">Brain Research and Carnegie Melon University</keyword>. 
Going strong in what he aims to achieve, Kris says he wants to “create a world-class institution in India for Brain Research” by first facilitating research and then commercializing it “to create products that have the potential to create real difference”.

Millennials: the first generation of digital natives
 Millennials are those who were born between 1980 and 2000. Analysts say by 2020, Millennials will comprise half the global workforce. Not only are they becoming the biggest consumer demographic, but also the most important in terms of technology adoption. Around 50% of Millennials count on social media when buying online. Millennials’ affinity for technology is reshaping the <keyword id="34494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="banking-industry">banking industry</keyword> globally, including in India. 

	Banking trends that can engage the Millennial audience
 

	Millennials are banking differently than any preceding generation. Besides the now established practice of using digital technologies, including mobile, social and wearables for everything, we highlight 5 other trends that banks need to embrace to engage this unique customer segment.
 

	1. Combining gamification and customer acquisition
 

	WeChat’s Hongbao, a gamification feature that launched during Chinese New Year in 2014, successfully attracted 8 million mobile payment customers – mostly new subscribers – in one night. The progress of the payment operations of players in the <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Financial-Services">financial services</keyword>, telco and retail sectors will be decided by the battle for control of digital wallet solutions. A successful digital wallet deployment demands banks’ investment commitment, together with a focus on contextualized, value-added services – for instance, digital identity management, payment advisory services, location intelligence, and even crypto currency integration. 

	3. Automated banking services with robots and artificial intelligence
 

	Banks have been automating human operations since many years with innovations, from ATM to e-banking. But Millennials demand much more than that. For instance, only 14% of Millennials seek advice from financial advisors, preferring to explore new ways of considering investment decisions, which are easy to access and don’t require face-to-face interaction. Banks are now looking at how they can use digitalization to augment human processes, especially by using artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, to offer automated service as a complement to human financial advisors. In the combination of machine learning and self-service, bankers have an innovative digital service that interacts with customers, listens to questions and offers solutions, and takes basic customer services to scale.
 

	4. Frictionless experience in a connected ecosystem 
 Millennials are digital natives. Most of them were exposed to internet, mobile and social from an early age. 80% of Millennials conduct basic banking digitally. Furthermore, 64% would be keen to experience a wearable technology product offered by an <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> or media company. Bank CEOs should not only start building ecosystems based on internal and external digital touch points to serve Millennials, but also focus on creating seamless experiences across the ecosystem. In the end, what Millennials want is a more connected, frictionless customer journey – for instance, a mortgage advisory app connected with social and location-based services or an <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> offering that connects with wearable fitness data. 

	5. Making digital more contextualized, without the loss of simplification
 

	The desire to be treated as an individual is universal, but Millennials’ interaction with digital channels demands more personalized services and contextualized products. Technologies like big data and advanced analytics are accelerating its progress. However, bank CEOs also need to establish a balanced strategy between personalization and simplification. What is valued the most by Millennials is not the number of e-banking preferences or personalized cross-selling by ATMs. At the end of the day, Millennials are still banking customers who seek traditional value: easy-to-use services and low-cost products.
 

	Conclusion
 

	Banking is at the highest risk of disruption by Millennials. Nearly half of them believe innovation will come from outside the industry. Bank CEOs have to act immediately following the trends of digitalization, automation and contextualization, to offer Millennials frictionless experience across multiple digital touch points in a connected ecosystem. And we don't talk about it anymore, but it is fundamentally embedded in every other conversation we have. I feel like AI is going to head down the same trajectory," he explains.A recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.accenture.com/us-en/insights/consulting/total-enterprise-reinvention">report from Accenture</a> shows there's an urgent need for business leaders to look beyond how generative AI affects roles and tasks, and to start redesigning processes across their organizations.According to the report, almost 10% of organizations are "leading" when it comes to their capabilities for reinvention and how they maximize the potential for generative AI to boost efficiency and productivity.<div type="image" title="AI slogan at Davos" height="1152" width="1536" msid="106931136" hostid="261"></div>Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, told BI there's a big learning gap on what constitutes AI. Much of what is being called "generative AI" has been around for decades, while much of what workers think is AI is actually automation."You will know when a company has figured it out when they can confidently report on their call that Gen AI drove X per cent of our revenue, and there's no pushback from the sell-side analysts on the call. That's when you know that there's a level and degree of confidence in what they're representing," Richardson said.Ivana Bartoletti, chief privacy and AI governance officer of Wipro, an IT services company, says businesses are now trying to work out how to move from the "glamour" to the "actual implementation" of AI.Similarly, Guru Gowrappan, CEO of ViaSat, a communications operator, says many companies are just talking about AI at Davos — but not actually doing much with it."I don't think everybody understands it. And some of them are just recategorizing what they were doing to call it AI," he tells BI.Gowrappan thinks the true potential of AI for more complex tasks such as contextual thinking and healthcare applications is yet to come: "I think the audience here is more shallow."

Everyone's buzzing about AI &mdash; including plenty of people who clearly don't understand it

About 44 per cent of developers based in India are considering leaving their job this year compared to 42 per cent globally, according to a report. The report by DigitalOcean Holdings, the cloud for developers, startups and SMBs, surveyed over 2,500 respondents from 94 countries including India, US, Germany, Canada and the UK. It shows that the developer talent shortage has potential to worsen with 64 per cent of those with less than a year's experience, and 32 per cent of those with 1-5 years experience, leaving their job recently. Motivations for leaving jobs were found to be consistent among both those who have already left and those considering leaving, with compensation, remote or flexible work environments, and better benefits being the top factors that motivate people to leave jobs, especially for younger developers. Nearly 18 per cent of respondents cited lack of time and resources to work on projects is also a key challenge, and 11 per cent mention team members leaving as a challenge, demonstrating that the developer talent shortage is impacting even those who stay in their roles. "Attracting and retaining developer talent is evolving rapidly and companies need to adapt to the new landscape," said Gabe Monroy, Chief Product Officer at DigitalOcean, in a statement. "Businesses need to better understand developers and give them the tools, benefits, and pay they need to be successful - business survival in the digital era depends on it," Monroy added. About 56 per cent of India developers also participated in open source projects in the past year, of which just 12 per cent of were paid for their contribution. Open source has contributed to learning and networking in India, with 37 per cent stating they have gained enhanced skills from open source, 23 per cent networking opportunities, and 10 per cent have found job opportunities through the open source community. It is clear that businesses of all sizes need to rethink their approach to attracting and retaining highly-skilled developer talent. The report also identifies compensation and desire for fully remote or more flexible work environments as the top reasons developers are thinking about quitting, or already have. Every 1 in 4 businesses in the US says they don’t anticipate any digital transformation in their industry, with the number dropping to 12% and 10% in India and UK, respectively. Essentially, digital transformation is high on the radar for Indian and UK businesses, but not so much in the US. India ahead of US and UK when it comes to AI readiness, says a new report

<ul><li><keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and its top Indian <keyword id="11827681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="seller-cloudtail">seller Cloudtail</keyword> will reportedly not renew their contract ending on May 19, 2022.</li><li>This comes amid allegations from retailers at Amazon of <keyword id="2682122" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cloudtail">Cloudtail</keyword> India receiving preferential treatment from the e-commerce giant.</li><li>In February, an investigation by a media report on Amazon said that it gave preferential treatment to a small group of sellers including Cloudtail and used them to bypass Indian laws.</li></ul>US-based e-commerce titan Amazon and one of its biggest sellers in India, Cloudtail India, are <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/et-exclusive-amazons-cloudtail-india-to-stop-operations-from-next-may/articleshow/85179750.cms">reportedly </a>going to end ties and not renew their contract after May 19, 2022 after seven years of partnership. Cloudtail India came into existence when Amazon and Indian billionaire and cofounder of Infosys, N.R. Narayana Murthy, formed a joint venture called Prione Business Services in August 2014. This comes when Amazon has been under <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/amazon-and-flipkart-may-have-a-new-headache-as-indias-e-commerce-policy-could-also-question-their-algorithms/articleshow/81512786.cms">speculation </a>for giving preferential treatment towards sellers that it had a stake in – Cloudtail and Appario. However, the company had in the past lashed out, calling the report “unsubstantiated, incomplete, factually incorrect”. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) had also ordered investigation into Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart last year for allegedly promoting select sellers (those in which they own a stake) on their e-commerce platforms and using business practices that stifle competition. Cloudtail has a strong presence in the Amazon India marketplace in categories like smartphones, electronics and fashion. India’s laws in foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail restrict companies like Amazon to sell items directly to consumers and hence allegedly to bypass these laws they operate through joint ventures with local companies. The strong part of the company is that it will be one of its kinds among listed companies, experienced management, and quality corporate governance practices.
