In Q3 2024, 46 million smartphones were shipped in India. According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), Cupertino tech giant Apple posted its highest quarterly shipments in India at 4 million units, led by iPhone 15 and iPhone 13. “Growth in the biggest quarter of the year was fueled by attractive discounts, multiple financing options, extended device warranty and cashback/bank offers across both online/offline channels. market</h2>Vivo has emerged as the market leader in Q3 2024, with a 15.8% market share, up from a 13.9% market share in Q3 2023. This marks the third consecutive quarter where the smartphone maker has led the Indian smartphone market. Vivo’s shipments have increased by 20% year-on-year. Oppo is second, with a 13.9% market share in Q3 2024, up from a 9.9% market share in Q3 2023. The company’s shipments have increased by 47.6% year-on-year. Samsung, which led the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2023 with a market share of 16.2% has been pushed down to the third spot with a 12.3% market share. The company’s shipments have declined by 19.7% year-on-year. Other notable changes include the increase in Apple’s market share from 5.7% to 8.2%, a decline in OnePlus’ market share from 6.2% to 3.6% and a 149% year-on-year increase in shipments recorded by Motorola. <h2>5G shipments on the rise</h2>The share of 5G shipments increased to 83% in Q3 2024, up from 57% in Q3 2023. Of the 46 million smartphones shipped, 38 million were 5G smartphones. This has been fueled by the decline in the average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones. The ASP has by 20% to $292 (approx. ₹24,650). “Cyclical dip in demand after the festive period and high shipments in 3Q24 will result in higher stock levels across channels in 4Q24. Thus, India's smartphone market is expected to exit 2024 with a low single-digit annual growth,” said Navkendar Singh, AVP – Devices Research, IDC. While the company’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 performed decently, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 failed to match its predecessor’s sales. The company recorded a 21% year-on-year decline in shipments. Huawei has emerged second, with a 15% market share in Q3 2024, up from a 13% market share in Q3 2023. The company recorded a 23% year-on-year growth in shipments. Honor and Motorola take the third and fourth spots, with a 10% and a 7% market share respectively. Both companies have recorded good growth. While Honor has recorded a 121% year-on-year growth, Motorola has recorded a 164% year-on-year growth. Xiaomi is in the fifth position, with a 6% market share. The company recorded the highest year-on-year growth at 185%. This growth was driven by the Mix Flip, the company’s first clamshell smartphone. Global foldable phone shipments decline in Q3 2024, Samsung leads with 56% market share

There was a 10% decline in shipments in Q2 2024. According to a report by the International Data Corporation, 38 million devices were shipped in the country’s wearables market in Q3 2024. The decline is being attributed to a reduction in new product launches and a cautious inventory strategy. <h2>Smartwatch shipments decline</h2>The smartwatch category recorded a decline of 44.8% as shipments declined from 16.92 million devices in Q3 2023 to 9.34 million in Q3 2024. Not just the basic smartwatches, the shipments of premium smartwatches also declined by 39.9% year-on-year. The Smartwatch average selling price (ASP) however increased by 1.4% from $25.8 to $26.2. The wristband category, which remained strong in Q2 has also declined in Q3, recording a 48.4% year-on-year decline in shipments. The earwear category also struggled, with a 7.5% decline in shipments from 30.29 million in Q3 2023 to 28.52 in Q3 2024. <h2>The smart ring category continues to shine</h2>The smart ring market has remained strong, with 92 thousand smart rings shipped in Q3 2024. The quarter also recorded a decline in the average selling price of 16.2% to $162.1. Indian wearables market declines 20.7% in Q3 2024, smartwatch and earwear categories struggle

A recent listing on the benchmarking platform Geekbench revealed a Nothing smartphone with the model number Nothing A059, which is expected to be the Nothing Phone (3). The device was spotted with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, Android 15 and 8GB RAM. The device is expected to feature a 6.5-inch display. However, earlier leaks had hinted that the Nothing Phone (3) will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset. The Nothing Phone (2) was launched with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Nothing is also expected to launch a “Pro” variant, featuring a bigger 6.7-inch display. The device is expected to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset. Nothing will reportedly launch three phones in 2025, including the Phone (3)

According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the growth in sales was recorded due to online festival sales which began early this year. “The e-tail sales, which typically start around the second week of October, began in late September, leading to a surge in PC shipments,” said Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, IDC India &amp; South Asia. In Q3 2024, desktops recorded an 8.1% year-on-year decline, notebooks recorded a 2.8% year-on-year growth and workstations recorded a 2.4% year-on-year growth. Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 recorded a 7.6% year-on-year growth. “Brands capitalized on e-tail sales by offering steep discounts, cashback, and bundled accessories. Many of them also matched similar pricing in their brand stores and offline channels like Larger Format Retail stores (LFRs), leading to the second biggest consumer quarter in history,” Shenoy added. India’s PC market reaches new high with 4.49 million shipments in Q3 2024

Nageswaran highlighted several indicators demonstrating the economy’s resilience. “If you run through the checklist for the <keyword id="19948184" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-economy" source="keywords">Indian economy</keyword>, the health is pretty robust,” he noted, pointing to controlled levels of external debt as a share of GDP, declining non-performing assets in the banking system, and stable inflation trends. Although certain food items have caused inflationary spikes, their impact is limited within the overall consumer price index basket, he explained. The CEA praised the shift in fiscal expenditure priorities over the past seven years, with greater focus on capital investments rather than revenue spending. This reallocation, he suggested, has bolstered long-term economic stability and growth potential. India’s GDP growth for the July-September quarter was 5.4%, significantly below the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast of 7%. While this has sparked concerns among economists, Nageswaran urged against overreacting. Erratic monsoons and excessive rainfall disrupted economic activity in Q2, he explained, while global uncertainties and supply chain pressures further weighed on growth. Despite these challenges, he maintained confidence in the broader growth narrative, citing improvements in key economic metrics. For instance, India’s gross capital formation has risen from 27.3% of GDP in the second decade of the 2000s to 30.8% today. Private consumption remains steady, and exports—spanning both services and manufacturing—continue to perform well even amid challenging global conditions. As per the report, the new iPad Pro performed below expectations due to its pricing. Samsung has emerged second with 7.1 million units shipped in Q3 2024, up from 6 million units shipped in Q3 2023, recording a growth of 18.33%. Amazon is back in the top five, occupying the third position with 4.6 million devices shipped in Q3 2024, up from 2.2 million devices shipped in Q3 2023, recording a 109.1% growth, making it the company to record the highest growth. Huawei shipped 3.3 million units in Q3 2024, up from 2.3 million units in Q3 2023, recording a 43.48% growth in shipments. Worldwide tablet shipments grow by 20.4% in Q3 2024, Apple leads with over 31% market share

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.
