Signaltron founder Himamshu Khasnis told PTI that the chip used in the Sahyadri LTE base stations has been developed by Signalchip. Earlier in 2010, Khasnis and his team founded a fabless semiconductor company Signalchip to make chips for 4G and 5G networks. "Signaltron has built the entire system indigenously using India's first chips for 4G and 5G networks developed by Signalchip. This is the first time an Indian system running on an Indian chip for complex communication technology has been inducted into the army. Using indigenous chips gives a high degree of control on the security of the system in its operation," Khasnis said. He said the Indian Army had posted a bid on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) for the supply of 4G LTE NIB (Network In a Box) solution last year. "Signaltron proposed the Sahyadri NIB solution and came out successful in stringent technical trials. Subsequently, Signaltron also won the competitive bid to supply the equipment. Weighing just 7 kgs, Sahyadri Network In a Box (NIB) systems provide high-quality secure wireless communication for audio, video and data applications," Khasnis said. He said the Sahyadri NIB is capable of working in both standalone and cellular modes and capable of seamless inter-operation with legacy analogue and IP telephony systems. The majority of the base stations deployed in India are not made in India. Even the few that are made in India do not have indigenous chips inside, which is the most strategic and important component of modern electronic devices and equipment. Signaltron has supplied 20 units to the army and the deployment of the base stations depends on their strategic requirement, Khasnis said. "We have supplied 20 units to the army. The Army takes its own call on when and where to deploy base station. Since they are light and mobile units, it gives them the flexibility to change the location as per their requirement," he added. At present, there is no fabrication facility in India for modern semiconductor chips. Signalchip has designed the chip indigenously and owns the entire technology that the chips deliver. In a model similar to leading semiconductor companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm, Mediatek etc, Signalchip also gets its chips fabricated through third-party wafer fabs. Khasnis said the Indian base station market is expected to be about USD 24 billion by 2029. "With the use of indigenous systems, there could be significant savings to forex and also boost GDP. There are sizeable market volumes available in India and worldwide. Modernisation targets of different sectors like defence, railways etc. are excellent opportunities for indigenous solutions," he said. Khasnis said that the CNPN (Captive Network-Private Network) 4G/5G market worldwide is expected to cross USD 30 billion by 2030, which will enable large possibilities for the local chip-based base stations, thereby providing economies of scale. Indian Army inducts first-ever indigenous chip-based made in India 4G base station from Signaltron

Gen. Brian Eifler, who led US Army Alaska and now commands the 11th Airborne Division, said at the press conference. "What we're doing is consolidating under one.""Arctic warfighting is not just what they do. It's really who they are, and that's the identity that these great soldiers are going to have in the 11th Airborne Division," Eifler said.<h2>Survive and thrive in the Arctic</h2><div type="image" title="Army Alaska Arctic paratroopers small unit support vehicle" height="1167" width="1557" msid="92115146" hostid="261"></div>The Army <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-figuring-out-whats-needed-to-regain-arctic-dominance-2021-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arctic Strategy released last spring</a> emphasized the need for Arctic-specific training and equipment and infrastructure that could support operations over the region's long distances and tough terrain.The Army conducted a "gap analysis" to determine what was needed and sought to address "near-term deficiencies" in its 2023 budget request. In that request, Army asked for $101.8 million to support the strategy by buying 13 new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-is-looking-for-a-new-arctic-all-terrain-vehicle-2021-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cold-weather, all-terrain vehicles</a>, acquiring more Arctic clothing and gear, and continuing to winterize equipment, an Army budget official said this spring.The budget official also said that money would cover "exportable" Combat Training Center rotations, allowing Alaska-based troops to do large-scale training in Alaska rather than the Army's training centers in Louisiana and California.Training in Alaska allows soldiers "to train the way we're going to fight" and fielding new vehicles along with "the right equipment and the right clothing" means they will "not only survive in this environment but they will thrive," McConville said Monday.<div type="image" title="Army Alaska Arctic paratroopers" height="1333" width="2000" msid="92115147" hostid="261"></div>The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team will shed its more than 300 Stryker vehicles, which will be upgraded for use elsewhere or stripped for parts, and become a light or air-assault-capable infantry brigade combat team, Eifler said."The structure of the organization will change slightly inside of it," Eifler said of the Stryker unit, "but their focus will be on dismounted [operations] and Arctic mobility and capabilities to sustain operations in the Arctic, in extreme cold weather, and in addition to providing those capabilities in other cold-weather environments, like <keyword id="12329412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nepal" source="Orion">Nepal</keyword> and <keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>."The airborne brigade will remain airborne "and it'll have the Arctic capabilities that go along with that," McConville said."You're going to see a lot more training in the [Alaskan] training areas, dismounted. You'll probably see a lot less Strykers [and] maybe a little bit more airborne operations up here, because again, the only Arctic airborne capability is in this unit," Eifler said.<h2>'A tough new airborne division'</h2><div type="image" title="US Army soldiers paratroopers in Alaska" height="1333" width="2000" msid="92115148" hostid="261"></div>The 11th Airborne Division was first activated in February 1943. With a new, 'strategically located' unit in Alaska, the US Army wants to extend its reach in the Arctic and beyond

Speaking in the Lok Sabha today, the Defence Minister said that Indian Army bravely stopped the Chinese People Liberation Army (PLA) PLA troops from encroaching on Indian territory, and forced them to withdraw to their posts. "On December 9, 2022 in the Yangtse area of Tawang sector PLA troops encroached upon and attempted to change status quo. This attempt was tackled by our troops in a determined manner. There was fist fight in during this face-off as well. Our troops bravely stopped PLA from encroaching upon our territory and forced them to go back to their post," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in the Lok Sabha. The minister said that the issue had been taken up with China through diplomatic channels. "After this incident, on December 11, the local commander of the area held a flag meeting with his Chinese counterpart under the established system and discussed this incident. The Chinese side was refused all such actions and told to maintain peace at the border," Singh told the Lok Sabha. The Defence Minister said that no <keyword id="1052484" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-troops" source="Orion">Indian troops</keyword> were killed or seriously injured in the incident. Singh said, "In this face-off, a few soldiers on both sides suffered injuries. I'd like to tell this House that none of our soldiers died or suffered any serious injury. Due to the timely intervention of Indian military commanders, PLA soldiers have retreated to their own locations." "This matter has also been taken up with China through diplomatic channels. I want to assure the House that our forces are committed to guard our borders and ready to thwart any attempt that will be made to challenge it," Rajnath Singh said. "I am confident this House will respect the capability, valour and commitment of our armed forces, Singh said. On Monday the Indian Army in a statement said: "On December 9, PLA troops contacted the LAC in Tawang Sector which was contested by own (Indian) troops in a firm and resolute manner. As a follow up of the incident, own (Indian) commander in the area held a flag meeting with his counterpart to discuss the issue in accordance with structured mechanisms to restore peace and tranquillity," it said. Opposition members earlier today created a ruckus in Parliament over the clash between troops of India and China. Soon after Rajnath Singh's statement, Opposition leaders staged a walkout from Lok Sabha.

India and China are engaged in a nine-month-long standoff at the LAC. Despite several levels of dialogue, there has not been any breakthrough and the deadlock continues. Indian Army chief visits forward locations and reviewed tense situation with China

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In October, US and Indian soldiers trained in <keyword id="12020240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alaska" source="Orion">Alaska</keyword> during the latest version of the <keyword id="12658337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="yudh-abhyas" source="Orion">Yudh Abhyas</keyword> exercise.</li><li>This year's iteration was the 17th of the exercise but only the second time it has been in Alaska.</li></ul>US and Indian soldiers have conducted the Yudh Abhyas exercise for 17 years, but the version held in late October was only the second time they've ventured to Alaska for it.This year's exercise was conducted as both countries face rising tensions with <keyword id="11892748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>, but that was far from mind as soldiers scrambled through deep snow and over mountainous terrain.Relations with China "did not enter anybody's mind in the course of this exercise," Col. Jody Shouse, the senior US Army officer at the exercise, told Insider in an interview in October. "This exercise was completely about coming together with the <keyword id="11893656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="indian-army" source="Orion">Indian Army</keyword> and becoming one, and China was not factored into this in any way."<div type="image" title="Indian soldiers with rifles in Alaska" height="1428" width="2000" msid="88059617" hostid="261"></div>While strategic-level issues, mainly disputes with China, have brought the countries closer in recent years, exercises like Yudh Abhyas are a part of decades-long efforts by their militaries to work together.Those "bottom-up" efforts are not always linked to higher-level strategic rationales, said Arzan Tarapore, a research scholar at Stanford University focused on South Asian security.The US and Indian militaries are "training to share knowledge about certain mission sets, to share knowledge about certain competencies, and to learn about each other," Tarapore told Insider. "That's just what they do."<h2>What Alaska offers</h2><div type="image" title="Indian soldiers and US Army paratroopers during Yudh Abhyas in Alaska" height="1335" width="2000" msid="88059619" hostid="261"></div>Yudh Abhyas alternates between <keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and the US, and this iteration was a year in the making, according to Shouse, commander of the US Army's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) — the Army's newest airborne brigade combat team and the only one in the Pacific.The US and Indian units involved and other higher-level US commanders met several times over the past year to arrange the exercise's two components: a command-post exercise simulating a UN peacekeeping mission and a field-training exercise in different locations in Alaska, held simultaneously."We had to select officers from various areas and fields of expertise for the CP exercise. Some of them had some experience with the UN before," Brig. Parag Nangare, 136th (I) Infantry Group commander and senior Indian Army officer at the exercise, told Insider during the interview."They brought their experiences and their standard operating procedures with them. We brought ours with us, and then we were able to put them together and create one standard operating procedure at the command-post exercise level," Shouse said.<div type="image" title="US and Indian soldiers during Yudh Abhyas in Alaska" height="1333" width="2000" msid="88059621" hostid="261"></div>The field-training exercise was in two parts. The first week consisted of "a kind of a round-robin circuit drill" during which US and Indian soldiers formed four teams that each spent a day at different stations, Shouse said.Those stations included training to evacuate casualties and sling-loading artillery with helicopters, load and unload aircraft, counter-drone and counter-improvised-explosive-device training, rappel towers and obstacle courses, and weapons familiarization. They also had sports days and <a href="https://newsable.asianetnews.com/video/india-defence/yudh-abhas-2021-sidelines-from-bollywood-dance-numbers-to-roasting-marshmallows-r1kp0z" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cultural exchanges</a>.The first week was "the building block of the cohesiveness" that was seen during the final exercise, held in Alaska's mountains during the last week of October, Nangare said.US and Indian soldiers also went to the <a href="https://www.jber.jb.mil/Portals/144/units/JPARC/PDF/JPARC-Black-Rapids-Training-Area.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Black Rapids training area</a> near Denali Mountain for training in "very extreme altitudes and a very extreme, mountainous environment," Shouse said.That training, done at altitudes of 14,000 feet, allowed both sides to hone their craft.<div type="image" title="US and Indian soldiers rappel down wall" height="1335" width="2000" msid="88059623" hostid="261"></div>"The lesson learned, really, in all this is the Indian army are probably better climbers than the US Army," Shouse said. "We have learned a tremendous amount from what these gentlemen have learned in their country, because they operate at 16,000 feet every single day."Nangare singled out the training in the mountains and with "the technological availabilities that the US Army has" as especially valuable.The only other Yudh Abhyas to take place in Alaska was a decade ago, and this year both sides wanted to take advantage of Alaska's mountainous terrain and adverse conditions to "hone their skills and their craft in a different geographical location," Shouse said.The "shared hardships" of training in that area promoted bonding, the US commander said.The day Shouse and Nangare spoke to Insider, both had been snowshoeing in the mountains when the weather "turned really bad on us," Shouse added. "That is just what Alaska offers you."<h2>Partners competing together</h2><div type="image" title="US and Indians soldiers conduct sling-load training with CH-47 Chinook helicopter" height="1294" width="2000" msid="88059625" hostid="261"></div>About 100 troops participated in the first Yudh Abhyas in Alaska, "and this time we have a strength of approximately about 650," Nangare said. "That shows the importance of the training and the exercise."Nangare said there are procedures in place for returning personnel to share their experiences with troops doing similar tasks in India.Those troops may get more first-hand experience next year, when Yudh Abhyas returns to India. US and Indian officials are already planning for that exercise, in which many of the same US soldiers, including Shouse, will participate."I am absolutely going to put our forces on the ground in the Himalayas," Shouse said. During his annual press conference in New Delhi, General Naravane said: "Last month, I had initiated a proposal that women officers can be recruited to Army Aviation. The next course which will begin in July this year, will induct women for training purposes in flying branch and after one year they will be able to join in operational duties." The Indian Army raised the Army Aviation Corps on November 1, 1986 and it comprises helicopters that fly in conflict and peace zones. "The PLA soldier, who was apprehended on January 8, was handed back to China at Chushul-Moldo at 10.10 am on Monday," a source said. Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a tense border standoff in eastern Ladakh for over eight months. The faceoff began in <keyword id="9768916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="may-last-year">May last year</keyword>, following a clash between the two sides in the Pangong lake area. "The PLA soldier had transgressed across the LAC and was taken into custody by Indian troops deployed in this area. Troops from either side are deployed along the LAC since friction erupted last year due to unprecedented mobilisation and forward concentration by Chinese troops," the Army said in a statement on Saturday. Following the capture of the soldier by the Indian Army, China had sought his immediate return on Saturday. It was the second such incident of <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> capturing and subsequently returning a Chinese soldier in the last three months. Indian troops had captured Corporal Wang Ya Long of the PLA on October 19 last year after he "strayed" across the LAC in Ladakh's Demchok sector. The corporal was handed back to China at the Chushul-Moldo border point following the laid-down protocols. The areas around the Pangong lake along the LAC have remained tense in the last few months. Around four months ago, Indian troops occupied a number of strategic heights in the Mukhpari, Rechin La and Magar hill areas around the southern bank of the Pangong lake, after the Chinese military attempted to intimidate them in the area on the intervening night of August 29 and 30 last year. Chief of Army Staff Gen. MM Naravane visited various high-altitude forward areas in eastern Ladakh last month, including certain positions on the south bank of the Pangong lake, and reviewed India's overall military preparedness. Nearly 50,000 troops of the Indian Army are currently deployed in a high state of combat readiness at various mountainous locations in eastern Ladakh in sub-zero temperatures as <keyword id="7687111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Multiple-rounds">multiple rounds</keyword> of talks between the two sides have not yielded a concrete outcome to resolve the standoff. China has also deployed an equal number of troops, according to officials. The eighth and last round of military talks between the two sides took place on November 6 last year, during which both sides had broadly discussed disengagement of troops from specific friction points. India has all along been maintaining that the onus is on China to carry forward the process of disengagement and de-escalation at the friction points in the mountainous region. Following the sixth round of military talks, the two sides had announced a slew of decisions, including not to send more troops to the frontline, refraining from unilaterally changing the situation on the ground and avoiding taking any action that may further complicate matters. This round of talks was held with a specific agenda of exploring ways to implement a five-point agreement reached between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at a meeting in Moscow on September 10 on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conclave. The pact included measures like quick disengagement of troops, avoiding action that could escalate tensions, adherence to all agreements and protocols on border management and steps to restore peace along the LAC. "We are hopeful of reaching an agreement which is mutually acceptable and is really beneficial in keeping with the overarching policy guidelines," he said. The chief of Army staff also said that the situation in eastern Ladakh is quite stable. General Naravane was speaking at a conclave organised by Bharatshakti.in, a portal on defence and military issues. Referring to Indian troops deployed in the high-altitude region, he said they are equipped with appropriate clothing and weapons, and added that there is no shortage whatsoever. India and China are likely to hold another round of military talks to discuss specific proposals for a possible breakthrough in the long-negotiated disengagement process in eastern Ladakh. The eighth round of Corps Commander-level talks on Friday had broadly discussed disengagement of troops from specific friction points and both sides would like to take forward the "constructive" dialogue to the next round with detailed deliberations, sources had said. Stocking up for winter The annual ‘advance winter stocking’ (AWS) exercise is underway but has more challenges to face than normal, officers told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/with-chinese-troops-yet-to-disengage-army-stocks-up-for-harsh-ladakh-winter/articleshow/77117141.cms?from=mdr">The Times of India.</a> In addition to the uncertainty on the border, there are also more mouths to feed, the challenge of procuring the rations during COVID-19 and making sure that it all gets done before snowfall in November. Running short on time Another cause of concern is that even though there are more mouths to feed, the amount of time to get rations in place is restricted. The AWS exercise involves pre-positioning and stocking supplies in the forward locations before the snowfall sets in. Since most of the forward locations are over 15,000 feet in altitude, they will largely become inaccessible starting November. Normally, the Indian Army has around 150 days between the months to June to September to set up. This time around, due to the tensions with China along the border, the time has been cut short. The coronavirus pandemic has further complicated the acquisition of rations. Even before the advent of COVID-19, procuring special dehydrated rations in huge quantities was a challenge. Over time, the conversation moves to direct messages and WhatsApp chats where the operative of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) tries to blackmail the ‘honey-trapped’ soldier into divulging defence secrets. A prominent example is of a lady who called herself as <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/50-soldiers-honey-trapped-by-pakistani-agent-jawan-arrested-for-leaking-sensitive-info-2000709.html">Anika Chopra</a> posed as an Army Captain at the Military Nursing Corps online managing to trap at least 50 jawans in the Indian Army. Honey trap as a weapon The Army describes honey-trapping as a weapon of hybrid warfare being waged by its enemies. In addition to being wary of women trying to flirt with them online, soldiers have also been asked to not post photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram while in uniform or alongside military equipment, installations and cantonments in the backdrop. Operation Dolphin Nose is an ongoing investigation by the Indian Navy to track down personnel being honey-trapped. In December, seven Indian Navy sailors were arrested under Operation Dolphin Nose for leaking sensitive information regarding the Navy to Pakistan. In January this year, three more navy personnel were <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/operation-dolphin-nose-three-more-navy-personnel-arrested-espionage-case-linked-pakistan-1633884-2020-01-04">arrested for spying</a>. Other don’ts include not giving out names, ranks and deployment locations. They have also been asked to not brag about military achievements on social media. Just over two weeks before the incident, in another potential indication of Chinese leaders signalling their intent to escalate tensions, an editorial in China's state-owned tabloid Global Times warned that India would suffer a "devastating blow" to its trade and economic ties with China if it got "involved in the US-China rivalry." Further satellite images depicted a large Chinese buildup in the Galwan Valley, including potentially 1,000 PLA soldiers, the week before the deadly skirmish, said the Congressional Commission created in 2000 for monitoring and investigating national security and trade issues between the US and China. China and India have engaged in multiple physical clashes along their border for decades, but since General Secretary Xi Jinping assumed power in 2012 the two countries have seen five major altercations along their border. The exact motivations behind the Chinese government's provocative behaviour on the LAC this year remain unclear, it noted. "The proximate cause of the clash appeared to be India's construction of a strategic access road to support troops stationed along the LAC. China has also built extensive infrastructure along the LAC in recent years. In the aftermath of the clash, Beijing asserted sovereignty over the entire Galwan Valley, a new claim and significant change to the territorial status quo," the report said. According to the report, the Chinese Navy has also regularly deployed diesel-electric and nuclear attack submarines in the Indian Ocean since 2013, which - despite their ostensible mission to support China's Gulf of Aden antipiracy task forces - serve to collect intelligence and signal to India that China could contest the Indian Navy or threaten commercial shipping. Chinese hydrographic survey vessels also sometimes venture into waters around India's strategic sites to collect intelligence, the report said, citing an example of India's navy chasing away China's Shiyan-1 research vessel in December 2019 after catching the vessel loitering without permission near Port Blair. The Commission said that in 2020, China sought to project an image of confidence and increased efforts to portray itself as a global leader superior to the United States even as it faced an increasing array of challenges at home and abroad. "Beijing ramped up its multiyear coercion campaign against its neighbours, provoking military or paramilitary standoffs with countries from Japan to India and much of Southeast Asia. Shortly after China's defence minister urged Beijing to use military force to stabilise its periphery, a violent clash on the China-India border in June led to the first loss of life between the two countries since 1975," it said. China planned in advance and 'provoked' Galwan Valley clash with India, indicates US report

The talks between military representatives of India and China to discuss disengagement in the Depsang plains north of Galwan area started on Saturday morning near the <keyword id="49399" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Actual-Control">Line of Actual Control</keyword>, sources said. The sources said that the Major General-level talks between Indian and Chinese armies is taking place at Daulat Beg Oldie for the de-escalation of troops and material in the Depsang plains. General Officer Commanding of 3 Mountain Division, Major General Abhijit Bapat, is leading the talks from the Indian side. The main agenda of the meeting is to address the situation in the Depsang plains that has seen big mobilisation of around 15,000 Chinese troops opposite Depsang. The Depsang plains is a table-top plateau to the north of Galwan and remains a major hotspot due to its strategic location since it provides access to the logistical hub and airstrip at Daulat Beg Oldie and the critical Karakoram Pass in the north. The meeting will seek to work out a system of pulling back troops and de-escalation from the 900 sq km plains situated at an altitude of 16,000 feet. The <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> holds a majority of the Depsang plains area while the People's Liberation Army holds its eastern edge. Chinese troops are concentrating on an area called 'Bottleneck', 25 km from the strategic airfield at Daulat Beg Oldie. The troops on either side are denying patrolling rights to each other in the "grey zone" areas, where the perception of the Line of Actual Control varies by several kilometres. Saturday's meeting is the outcome of the Lieutenant General-level meetings, five of which have been conducted since June 6. Depsang plains has seen two major stand-offs in 2013 and 2014, besides dozens of face-offs annually when the troops of the two countries come close while patrolling. In the meantime, the Indian government has witnessed that China's commitment to disengagement at the Pangong Tso lake remains "unsatisfactory". India has directed its armed forces to prepare for a long haul.
