Skyroot Aerospace's rocket Vikram-S with three small satellites is scheduled for launch on November 18 at 11.30 a.m. "Launch is likely on 18th as the weather is predicted to be ideal. Due to inclement weather, we got an updated launch window of November 15-19, 2022," Chandana said. According to him, the Vikram-S rocket is a scaled down version of Vikram-1 rocket. The former is a single stage rocket whereas the latter is a multi-stage vehicle. "Almost all our systems flying in Vikram-S were designed in-house, except for few sensors which were imported," Chandana said. The rocket will be powered by a single stage to help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of rockets. The company plans to have three rocket variants: Vikram I - payload or carrying capacity 480 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit (LIO); 290 kg to 500 km sun synchronous and polar orbit (SSPO); Vikram II - 595 kg to 500 km LIO, 400 kg to 500 km SSPO and Vikram III - 815 kg to 500 km LIO, 560 kg to 500 km SSPO. American Airlines could pay $1 billion for up to 250 eVTOLs to fly travelers over congested cities and highway traffic

The flight will mark Williams' third space mission. According to NASA, the flight to the orbiting International Space Station (<keyword id="20307956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISS" source="keywords">ISS</keyword>) is scheduled to lift off from Florida's Kennedy Space Centre around 10 pm Indian Standard Time today. 'Suni' Williams and fellow NASA <keyword id="20248602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="astronaut" source="keywords">astronaut</keyword> Barry 'Butch' Wilmore will be the first humans to go aboard Starliner spacecraft as part of the US space agency's Commercial Crew Program. The Starliner spacecraft will be catapulted into space on an Atlas 5 rocket of the rocket company United Launch Alliance (ULA). It will dock with the ISS on Sunday and the astronauts will be at the ISS conducting a range of tests for about a week. Starliner will then undock from the ISS re-enter Earth's atmosphers and make a parachute and airbag-assisted landing in the southwestern United States on June 10, NASA said. If this mission is successful, NASA will begin the final process of certifying Starliner and its systems for crewed rotation missions to the International Space Station. The Starliner capsule will carry four astronauts, or a mix of crew and cargo, for NASA missions to low Earth orbit. NASA, Boeing, and ULA (United Launch Alliance) are ready for the June 1, launch of the agency's Boeing Crew Flight Test according to an announcement during a prelaunch media briefing from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. "I'm very proud of the teams who have worked really hard the last two and a half weeks to prepare for launch," said Steve Stich, manager, NASA's Commercial Crew Program. "We're really ready to go fly" he said. The integrated ULA Atlas 5 rocket and Starliner spacecraft stack rolled out to the pad at Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on May 30 in preparation for liftoff. Both Williams and Wilmore had remained in preflight quarantine inside the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building following their return to the Florida spaceport on May 28. Mission managers of the <keyword id="21541868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boeing-Starliner" source="keywords">Boeing Starliner</keyword>'s Crewed Test Flight (CFT) called off the mission on May 7, just two hours before the scheduled launch due to a valve glitch in the Atlas 5 rocket's upper stage. Boeing said in its statement that the valve was successfully replaced on May 11 and tested to confirm it was working properly. Later on May 14, NASA announced that the CFT mission scheduled for May 17 has been pushed to no later than May 21 due to what it described as a "small helium leak" in the spacecraft's service module. On May 17 the space agency said that the launch was further pushed back to May 25. The flight marking Boeing's first Starliner spacecraft mission with a human crew, is part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, which is working with the US aerospace industry through a public-private partnership to launch astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft from US soil. NASA selected Boeing and SpaceX in September 2014 to transport crew to the International Space Station from the United States. These integrated spacecraft, rockets and associated systems will carry up to four astronauts on NASA missions, maintaining a space station crew of seven to maximize time dedicated to scientific research on the orbiting laboratory. After a failed attempt in December 2019, Boeing conducted a successful uncrewed Orbital Flight Test 2 (OFT-2) in 2022. Its Starliner is expected to be reusable for up to ten missions within a six-month turnaround time, according to the aerospace company. Elon Musk-owned SpaceX company's Crew Dragon has performed 12 crewed missions since its first launch on May 30, 2020. Williams and Wilmore were both former commanders of the International Space Station. Williams, from Needham, Massachusetts, earned a physical science degree from the US Naval Academy, and a master's in engineering management from the Florida Institute of Technology. Her first spaceflight was Expedition 14/15 (from December 2006 to June 2007) launching on space shuttle Discovery's STS-116 mission to reach the International Station, according to NASA. While onboard, Williams established a world record for women at the time with four spacewalks. She concluded her tour of duty by returning to Earth with shuttle Atlantis' STS-117 flight to land at Edwards Air Force Base in California on June 22, 2007. Selected as an astronaut by NASA in June 1998, Williams has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions and accumulated 50 hours and 40 minutes of cumulative EVA time on seven spacewalks. Williams worked with Roscosmos on its contribution to the space station and with the first Expedition crew. Meanwhile, 61-year-old, Wilmore has logged 178 days in space and has 25 hours and 36 minutes of time on four spacewalks. Boeing has planned six manned missions for the platform over the next six years, the projected end of the ISS' operating lifespan. NASA plans to use both SpaceX's Dragon and Boeing's Starliner to send up astronauts at least every six months from US soil. Both Boeing and SpaceX were given the responsibility in 2014 by NASA to send commercial crew missions to the ISS. Sunita Williams flies to ISS on NASA's Boeing Starliner tonight; 3rd time in space for Indian-origin astronaut

The targetted measures include a 100% tariff on <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword>, a 50% tariff on semiconductors and solar cells, and a 25% tariffs on batteries, steel and aluminium products, some critical minerals, and essential health equipment like medical gloves, syringes and needles. In his address from the Rose Garden of the White House, Biden said America can continue to buy any kind of car they want, "but we're never going to allow China to unfairly control the market for these cars. Period." He claimed that the Chinese government has been investing state funds in various Chinese companies for years, spanning industries across the above-mentioned sectors. How does this brewing geopolitical <keyword id="20736760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-war" source="keywords">trade war</keyword> impact <keyword id="20742235" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-firms" source="keywords">Indian firms</keyword>? Experts say the impact could be in two ways, benefitting some sectors, while harming the few others. Global trade experts say that a majority of Chinese products are sold at unreasonably low prices in global markets because the companies in these sectors do not have to worry about profits. Additionally, China has been accused of employing anti-competitive strategies like compelling foreign companies to transfer their technology in order to operate in China. These factors have led to the US effectively shutting its door on several Chinese products through heightened tariffs, and other developed markets like Canada are also likely to follow suit. White House also emphasised that it continues to consult with its partners and allies who are facing similar threats from China’s unfair trade practices and are keen on taking action. If more and more global markets restrict entry of Chinese products, the risk of the majority of such products being dumped in neighbouring India increases drastically. Trying to block Chinese excess production "is like squeezing a balloon. It shrinks in one place and pops out in another," William Reinsch, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, tells Reuters. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="An opportunity also arises" comment="subhead" text="An opportunity also arises">An opportunity also arises</cmsannotation> While some products risk being dumped into the Indian market, in a few other cases, Indian firms could benefit from fresh openings in the lucrative US market. "Of the products affected, India has opportunities in face masks, PPE, syringes &amp;needles, medical gloves, aluminium, iron, and steel. Opportunity may come in China also with retaliation, provided we have market access in products targeted by China," Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), told ANI. However, China is not likely to retaliate against the US tariffs at the moment, say experts, though the country’s Ministry of Commerce said it would take 'resolute measures to safeguard its own rights and interests' "China's economy is fragile. With household spending and the property market on the wane, manufacturing for export markets is one of its few bright spots. Beijing will not want to cut off its nose to spite its face. More broadly, China is desperately trying to encourage new foreign investment. Rash retaliatory action could spoil its case," Moody's Analytics explained in a recent report. Out of China's USD 420 billion exports to the US, only USD 18 billion is impacted due to the latest hike in tariffs — representing slightly over 4% and therefore considered marginal. But Sahai says that this market will continue to grow with time and provides an opportunity to India and other competitors to chip in the supply gap. Ajay Srivastava, the founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), also echoes Sahai’s opinions. He emphasised that the increased duties on Chinese face masks, syringes, needles, medical gloves, and natural graphite offer a substantial opportunity for India, as quoted by ANI. "By ramping up production and export of these in-demand products, India could enhance its trade footprint in the US market," he added. In terms of products like electric vehicles and semiconductors, India remains a net importer, and therefore, may not be in a position to capitalise right now. In the long term, however, as India begins semiconductor production at scale in 2025, there will be opportunities to export some of it to the US and other European countries, offering fresh impetus for domestic manufacturing. As the security risks associated with importing Chinese semiconductors prompts more and more trade barriers from the Western countries, demand for supply from India is likely to grow. Efforts are already underway for the establishment of four large semiconductor plants in India, with three located in Gujarat and one in Assam. Last fiscal year, Indian exports to the US dipped marginally by 1.32 per cent to $77.5 billion as against $78.54 billion in 2022-23. The new development now gives an unique opportunity to turn the tide over the next few years. Overall, some sectors like steel and aluminium do face a serious challenge due to the fresh US tariffs on Chinese products. Behind these high-profile orders is an industry of startups dedicated to making the dream of true air taxis a reality, even though countless hurdles stand in the way. Helping them along, however, are aerospace giants like <keyword id="447020" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Honeywell-Aerospace">Honeywell Aerospace</keyword> that are developing the systems to power the aircraft. The reality of eVTOLs flying paying customers, according to companies like Joby Aviation and Volocopter, will arrive as soon as 2024. It's a timeline that Stéphane Fymat, vice president and general manager, urban air mobility and unmanned aerial systems, at Honeywell Aerospace, told Insider is "realistic" and that if not by 2024, at least by the end of the current decade. But the questions remain, who will fly them and who will fly on them? The compact flying machines are a brand-new technology that are often smaller than helicopters, powered solely on battery power, and intended to be flown autonomously with no pilot.<div type="image" title="Volocopter" height="795" width="1060" msid="84922716" hostid="261"></div>It's a proposition that will be entirely new to most travelers and Honeywell is already thinking about how to overcome hurdles in public perception, starting with putting pilots in the aircraft. While autonomous flying without any onboard pilot is the goal of most eVTOL companies, Fymat believes the first aircraft will need pilots to make customers feel comfortable. "Consumer acceptance comes down to a few things, in my mind, it comes down to a sense of control and trust," Fymat said. Airlines like United and American are dedicating billions of dollars to fly a new type of aircraft that won't require pilots

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airline-close-calls-happening-multiple-times-nyt-investigation-2023-8">spike in near-miss events</a> between commercial aircraft in the US this year has rattled the general public.</li><li>The Federal Aviation Administration has created a safety review committee to comb through data and look for trends.</li></ul>The US airline industry has narrowly avoided what could have been some of the worst disasters in its history. And, for regulators, the incidents were too close for comfort.In mid-January, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/faa-ntsb-investigating-near-crash-delta-and-american-jets-2023-1">Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 was rolling for takeoff</a> at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when an American Airlines Boeing 777 crossed the same active runway, forcing the Delta plane to abruptly stop to avoid a collision.In early February, a FedEx Boeing 767 cargo jet nearly landed on top of a Southwest Boeing 737 airliner in Austin, Texas, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/06/us/texas-southwest-fedex-planes-near-collision/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coming within 100 feet of each other</a>. A JetBlue Airways plane and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jetblue-flight-close-call-private-jet-boston-airport-faa-2023-2">private jet then had a "close-call" a few weeks later.</a>These high-profile events have been heavily reported on already, but safety data from the Federal Aviation Administration and analyzed by the New York Times suggests they are actually <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airline-close-calls-happening-multiple-times-nyt-investigation-2023-8">happening more than initially thought</a>. According to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/08/21/business/airline-safety-close-calls.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Times</a>, at least 46 incidents occurred in July alone, citing human error as a main factor in the near-misses — including one in which two planes operated by Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines came within 100 feet vertically of each other in Denver.Some of the events are reminiscent of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deadliest-plane-crash-history-pan-am-klm-tenerife-2017-3">the deadliest plane crash ever</a> — the tragic collision of two Boeing 747 jets in Tenerife, Spain in 1977 that killed 583 people. It's history the industry doesn't want to repeat.<h2>A "call to action"</h2><div type="image" title="Billy Nolen." height="1333" width="1778" msid="102980358" hostid="261" sizebytes="67066"></div>Since March, regulators and aviation professionals have come together to mitigate the concerning near-miss incidents, including the FAA's Tuesday <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/runway-safety-meetings-scheduled-approximately-90-airports#:~:text=WASHINGTON%20%E2%80%94%20The%20Federal%20Aviation%20Administration,the%20FAA's%20Air%20Traffic%20Organization." target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcement</a> that it will hold safety meetings at approximately 90 airports across the US in the coming weeks."Sharing information is critical to improving safety," Tim Arel, the COO of the FAA's Air Traffic Organization, said in a press release. "These meetings, along with other efforts, will help us achieve our goal of zero close calls."The move will complement the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/faa-launching-safety-review-committee-after-recent-near-crashes-2023-2">FAA's newly-established safety review committee</a>, as well as the safety summit it hosted in March to discuss ways to mitigate risks."The proximity with these recent events in terms of how close those aircraft got to one another definitely catches everybody's attention. "Anthony Brickhouse, an air safety investigator and associate professor at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, told Insider. "And, the fact that these events are so high profile and garnered so much attention means that eyes are really on it and that exposure is a good thing." During <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/readout-faa-aviation-safety-summit-breakout-panels">breakout sessions</a> at the safety summit, officials offered theories like inexperienced first officers and overworked air traffic controllers as contributing to the near-disasters.The Times pointed to the challenges surrounding air traffic controllers, in particular, as a root cause. Not only are a majority of ATC facilities not meeting staffing thresholds, but controllers are also facing fatiguing work schedules that could impact performance — potentially putting safety at risk.But, tired employees are not the only concern. Airline pilot and aerospace expert Kathleen Bangs told Insider that complacency could also be creeping in, especially since there has not been a mass casualty plane crash in the US since 2009. "We have been in a stretch of historical unprecedented safety," she said. "And, what that means is there can be a tendency for any system to get complacent when things are going so well."<h2>Flying is still safe</h2><div type="image" title="Delta Airplanes" height="777" width="1036" msid="102980367" hostid="261" sizebytes="52646"></div>Despite mounting concerns, runway incursions are statistically rare considering millions of planes take off and land every year. And, according to FAA data revealed on Monday, the rate is trending <a href="https://www.faa.gov/aviation-safety-call-to-action" target="_blank" rel="noopener">down</a> as regulators work to address risk.The overall rate per one million takeoffs and landings has been decreasing since 2021 after the 2020 pandemic lull, and currently sits below 2019 levels — though the number is likely to change by the end of the year.The most serious events — known as "Category A" and "Category B" incursions — were the highest in January at 1.0 per one million takeoffs and landings, but fell to 0.210 in June. The lowest rate, per the <a href="https://www.faa.gov/aviation-safety-call-to-action" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FAA</a>, was in May with a 0.00 rate of occurrences.The near crashes have also prompted more conversations about the importance of <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/18/business/jfk-near-collision-human-error/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">technology</a>. Austin airport where the Southwest/FedEx event occurred did not have the same <a href="https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/technology/asde-x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ground surveillance system</a> that alerted the New York-JFK controller of the Delta/American near-crash.The FAA has since <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-invests-over-100m-reduce-runway-incursions-airports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> a more than $100 million safety investment at 12 US airports to reduce runway incursions — granted, Austin isn't one of them."Multiple layers of safety protect the traveling public, including Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems [TCAS] on commercial aircraft, <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/runway-safety-fact-sheet#rsat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">surface safety technology</a> at the country's biggest airports, and robust procedures," the agency said in a press release regarding the Times findings. "Air traffic controllers and pilots all play critical roles."<a href="https://skybrary.aero/articles/tcas-ra-survey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TCAS</a>, which alerts pilots to a possible collision, is one of the most critical safety systems in the cockpit and acts as another line of defense in the case of miscommunication or human error.While technology is important, Brickhouse says humans are still essential to aviation safety."Technology is to support and to supplement the human, but never to replace," he told Insider.Despite the near-disasters, the chance of being in a <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/planecrash/risky.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fatal air crash is about 1 in 11 million</a> — and Brickhouse emphasized it is still the safest mode of transportation. And, at the end of the day, all of the safeguards and redundancies — humans and technology — have worked together to prevent an accident."If you successfully drive to the airport, the riskiest portion of your travel is pretty much behind you," he told Insider. "Aviation is still incredibly safe even though we do have close calls from time to time, and everything did work out."

Dangerously close near-miss incidents across the US are a wakeup call to the aviation industry

The Indian <keyword id="9462187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-economy" source="Orion">space economy</keyword> is currently valued at around Rs 6,700 crore ($8.4 billion) with a 2 per cent share in the global <keyword id="9462187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-economy" source="Orion">space economy</keyword>. As per estimates by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), the country's space economy is poised to reach Rs 35,200 crore ($44 billion) by 2033 with nearly 8 per cent of the global share. Clint Crosier, Director, Aerospace and Satellite, <keyword id="291131" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aws" source="Orion">AWS</keyword>, told during the sidelines of the '<keyword id="291131" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aws" source="Orion">AWS</keyword> re: Invent 2023' conference here that he is very bullish on India and is witnessing a faster rate of <keyword id="3588883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-startups" source="Orion">space startups</keyword> being created in the country over the last year. "We have seen dozens and dozens of new <keyword id="3588883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-startups" source="Orion">space startups</keyword> being established in India. This is because of the new government policies and investments, and the goal to increase by 4 times the amount of its share of the global space industry," Crosier emphasised. In September, AWS signed a strategic MoU with the Indian Space Research Organization (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) and IN-SPACe to support space-tech innovations through cloud computing. This collaboration will give space startups, research institutes and students access to cutting edge cloud technologies that accelerate the development of new solutions in the space sector. "We look forward to helping customers in India build space-tech solutions to make life on Earth better," Shalini Kapoor, Director and Chief Technologist, Public Sector, AWS India and South Asia, had said. The three-way collaboration follows the recent approval of the Indian Space Policy, 2023 which provides a strategic roadmap for the growth and development of India's space programme and ambitions. Crosier said that the company is working from the smallest startups all the way up to the government organisations to help them improve their capabilities in the space sector. "We're supporting and working with a company called SatSure in India, which is using space-based data, and geospatial analytics to help with climate management decisions within the government in the country," he told IANS. SatSure is able to process those volumes of data, and turn large data into real-time, knowledge and insights by operating at the scope and speed of high performance compute and artificial intelligence and machine learning on AWS cloud. With at least 140 registered space-tech startups, India stands to transform the planet's connection to the final frontier. According to a latest report by The New York Times, startups in India have ambitious plans for capitalising on the burgeoning demand of small satellites in low-earth orbits. The startups like Skyroot Aerospace, Dhruva Space and Pixxel are among a cluster of startups that have been actively and closely working with the <keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>. The government has opened up the space sector for private players. In June during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to the US, the White House said that Modi and American President Joe Biden "called for enhanced commercial collaboration between the US and Indian private sectors in the entire value chain of the space economy". Crosier was recently in India and saw a great momentum going on in the <keyword id="6177850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spacetech" source="Orion">spacetech</keyword> sector. "We continue to sit down with the Indian startups. We continue to meet with them and understand their problems, looking at Cloud-based tools and capabilities and figure out where Ccloud can solve some of their problems," he noted.

Extensive growth in electric vehicles, renewables, modern infrastructure, energy efficient consumer goods and greater dependence on strategic sectors such as aerospace and defence, will drive Aluminium consumption to grow at CAGR of 10 per cent or more. For example, Aluminium usage in EV battery is 40-50 per cent more than a normal ICE. Being 3 times lighter than steel it aids in fuel efficiency making it an efficient choice for EVs. However, the Indian aluminium industry is struggling to revive itself over the last two years following the unprecedented Covid pandemic. The declining domestic producers market share with surging imports coupled with significant cost escalation for primary producers due to a rise in input costs of critical raw materials, escalating ocean freights &amp; logistics costs due to container shortage, current coal crunch situation etc, is restricting the industry's ability to support the future of the country at a time when India cannot rely on import sources alone to fuel this growth. To give relief to the sector, there is a need for urgently looking at the duty structure. The industry expects increase in tariff rate of basic custom duty or peak custom duty rate from existing 10 per cent to 15 per cent. Currently custom duty on Primary Aluminium is 7.5 per cent, Downstream Aluminium is 7.5 per cent to 10 per cent and Aluminium <keyword id="6374716" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="scrap" source="Orion">scrap</keyword> is only 2.5 per cent. This is the reason why despite having significant presence of primary Aluminium capacity and potential to generate sufficient domestic scrap, India's consumption of scrap is 100 per cent import dependent. The way forward is to increase custom duty on Aluminium srap from 2.5 to 10 per cent. Primary aluminium industry is facing severe threat from the increasing import of Aluminium scrap. The share of scrap in total imports increased from 52 per cent in FY-16 to 66 per cent in FY-21. resulting in Forex Outgo of $2 billion (Rs 15,000 crore). What is also affecting the Indian industry is China's renewed measures to restrict Scrap imports through National Sword Policy, which is leading to greater inflow of scrap into India. China imposed 25 per cent duty on Aluminium Scrap imports from USA, and classified Aluminium Scrap in restricted import list from July, 2019, with plan to completely ban all scrap and waste imports. Post that the share of import from the US in China's total Aluminium scrap imports has declined from 53 per cent in 2017 to just 16 per cent in 2019. India has overtaken China as world's largest aluminium scrap importer due to Chinese measures. As a result, entire global scrap chain is shifted to India in absence of any quality or BIS standards for scrap recycling/ usage and imports in the country. A major threat is from US scrap imports, as US is diverting large volume of scrap to India, since EU and other developed countries have stringent standards for scrap. The import from US as share of India's total scrap imports increased from 8 per cent in FY16 to 24 per cent in FY21. This precarious situation can be resolved by safeguarding the domestic industry against these non-essential imports in the upcoming union budget.
