Indian Air Force’s video game goes up against Call of Duty and Angry Birds in Google’s competition

<ul><li>The <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> (IAF) has launched a <keyword id="7933302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-3d-mobile-game">new 3D mobile game</keyword> called 'Indian Air Force A Cut Above'.</li><li>The Air Force is hoping to give aspirants a chance to see what it would feel like to fly a for the service and be an 'air warrior'.</li><li>The 3D flight simulation game has 10 different modes to choose from like conducting a surgical strike or ops for with futuristic weapons.</li></ul>The Indian Air Force (IAF) just launched a new 3D mobile game called 'Indian Air Force A Cut Above' to give aspirants a chance to experience what it would be like to be an actual pilot in service — or an 'air warrior'.

 Right now, users can only play the single player version of the game but there are plans to launch a multiplayer version soon. The mobile game was developed by Threye Military Games in collaboration with IAF, using Unity 3D's Cinemachine. It is available for download in both Android and iOS play stores. The game also has an option for users to apply and appear for recruitment into the IAF from within the app itself. This isn't the only game that the IAF has launched in the country to get more of the youth to engage with aerial operations of the Indian Armed Forces.

Indian Air Force is hiring 80 apprentices — Checkout eligibility, last date, stipend and other details

<keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> has always been a major part of the defence forces, thanks to the modern technology that it uses. However, the force is now under threat from China and Pakistan’s constantly and rapidly modernising air forces, revealed a top US think-tank. It also underlined that resolving this "crisis" should be Indian government’s top priority. 
 
"Despite being a world-class combat arm, the IAF's falling end strength and problematic force structure, combined with its troubled acquisition and development programs, threaten India's air superiority over its rapidly modernising rivals, China and Pakistan," said the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 
 
The report, titled "The Manifold Travails of the Indian Air Force" has been written by Ashley Tellis, a top American expert on India and South Asia, whose counsel is sought by governments in both the countries. The report argues that India needs this air dominance for deterrence stability in southern Asia and also for preserving the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific region. 
 
"Resolving India's airpower crisis, therefore, should be a priority for New Delhi," said the report. 
 
It added that as of early this year, IAF's fighter force is weaker than the numbers suggest, while drawing attention to many of its frontline aircraft are obsolete. 
 
Comparing China and Pakistan’s air forces to that of India, it said that they have about 750 advanced air defense/ multirole fighters as compared to IAF's 450-odd equivalents. 
 
"The IAF's desire for 42 45 squadrons by 2027 some 750 800 aircraft is compelling, if India is to preserve the airpower superiority it has enjoyed in southern Asia since 1971," the report said. 
 
While concluding, Tellis said that IAF's likelihood of reaching its 2027 goal with a high proportion of advanced fighters seems poor.

Indian Air Force under threat from China and Pakistan, says US think tank

India has finally decided to take forward its negotiations with Russia about the mega projects that were stalled in the past. 
 
As per TNN sources, the talks about jointly developing a futuristic fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) and upgrading the existing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Sukhoi-wants-Tata-to-manufacture-parts-for-SSJ100/articleshow/51026262.cms">Sukhoi</a>- 30MKI jets into 'Super Sukhois' with advanced avionics and weapons have begun amidst India and Russia. 
 
However, India and France are also close to inking a deal worth 7.8 billion euro deal for 36 Rafale jets, but the defence ministry has acknowledged that these 36 fighters will not be enough for India’s air combat power which is on a down track.

 As of now, the <keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> just has 33 fighter squadrons, which includes 11 obsolete MiG-21 and MiG-27 squadrons that are up for retirement. However, to safeguard the border from the evil intentions of China and Pakistan, IAF requires at least 42 jets. 
 
The defence ministry is also considering a "multi-pronged strategy" so that it can up its airpower. This includes introducing the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Made-in-India-light-combat-aircraft-Tejas-inducted-in-Air-Force/articleshow/53002316.cms">home-made </a>light combat aircraft, called <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/10-things-you-should-definitely-know-about-the-brand-new-Made-in-India-fighter-jet-Tejas/articleshow/53007047.cms">Tejas</a>, and look out for a second line of producing fighter jets in the country, including the American F/A-18, F-16, and Swedish Gripen-E. 
 
Talking of these 5th-generation fighters, the final R&amp;D design contract is almost ready to be inked, for the Indian "perspective multi-role fighter", which is a variant of Sukhoi T-50 or PAK-FA, the Russian single-seat FGFA. 
 
"Apart from resolving technical and cost issues, Russia has also agreed to allow IAF test pilots to fly its prototypes now," a source told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/india-pushes-talks-with-russia-for-5th-generation-fighters-and-super-sukhois/articleshow/53147669.cms">TNN</a>.

The first contract was signed in 2007, which was then followed up in 2010 with a $295 million preliminary design contract. 
 
The contract involves producing 127 such fighters in India would cost about $25 billion. 
 
"The technical requirements should be finalised this year, with the contract being inked next year," said the source.

India begins final talks with Russia over fighter jets and Super Sukhois

<keyword id="15141" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> (IAF) got the first squadron of ‘Made in India’ fighter jets ‘<keyword id="6376012" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tejas">Tejas</keyword>’, now named 'Flying Daggers 45'. 
 
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) handed over two Tejas aircrafts, which were inducted in Bengaluru, and seven more will be added by 2017 to become fully operational. 
 
All squadrons of Tejas will be made up of 20 planes in total, including four in reserve. 
 
These Light Combat Aircrafts (LCA) entered Air Force 33 years after the project was conceived, giving a major boost to Indian defence aviation system. 
 
Tejas will eventually replace the ageing fleet of MiG-21 planes. 
 
Here are the other details about Tejas that you should not miss 
 1. The name Tejas, which means radiance, was given by former Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword>. 
 
2. The first Commanding Offier of the ‘Flying Daggers 45’ will be Group Captain M Rangachari. He will have seven officers under him 
initially, 42 air warriors and about 20 non-commissioned officers. 
 
3. IAF's squadron number 45, 'Flying Daggers', has to its credit the shooting down of a Pakistani naval surveillance aircraft in 1999, some 300 km northeast of Karachi, killing all 16 people on board. 
 
4. Tejas is far superior to Pakistan's JF-17 built jointly with China. 
 
5. While the idea to have an indigenous fighter aircraft was conceptualised in 1970s, actual work started on the aircraft only in the 1980s and the first flight took place in January 2001. 
 
6. It is pegged as the world's smallest and lightest supersonic fighter, a project which was started in 1983 with Rs 560 crore funds. Now, the total cost stands at around Rs 55,000 crore. 
 
7. The upgraded version of Tejas, with Active Electrically Scanned Array Radar, Unified Electronic Warfare Suite, mid-air refuelling capacity and advanced beyond the vision range missiles, will cost between Rs 275 crore and Rs 300 crore. 
 
8. Due to its small size and the extensive usage of carbon composits, Tejas’ radar cross section is very less compared to other aircrafts like MiG-29, F-16. 
 
9. Tejas will have a reach of at least 400-km and will mostly be used for close air-to-ground operations. For any strikes which happen deep into enemy territory will have to be undertaken by Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKIs or the Rafales. 
 
10. IAF plans to induct over 80 aircraft with better specifications known as Tejas 1A.

The induction ceremony started early morning at the Aircraft System Testing Establishment in the presence of Air Marshal Jasbir Walia, Air Officer Commanding-in Chief, Southern Air Command. 
 
The squadron will be based in Bengaluru for the first two years before being moved to Sulur in Tamil Nadu.

Stating that LCA squadron should be formed by July, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manohar+parrikar&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar</a> had earlier this month said, "Next year I think two MiG-21 squadrons are being decommissioned; this will go into initially replacing them." 
 
LCAs are better than the MiGs which are old and their parts are difficult to get, he had said. 
 
All squadrons of Tejas will have 20 planes in total, including four in reserve. 
 
As per the plan, while 20 would be inducted under the "Initial Operational Clearance", another 20 will be inducted later with Beyond Visual Range Missile (BVR) and some other features. 
 
IAF plans to induct over 80 aircraft with better specifications known as Tejas 1A.

In a significant boost for the capabilities of its Su-30 combat aircraft fleet, the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword> is equipping them with a new missile which can take down ground-based targets from a distance of over 250 kilometres. The new missile has been acquired by the Indian <keyword id="6354954" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-force" source="Orion">Air Force</keyword> under emergency provisions and will further enhance the capabilities of the Su-30 fighter jets which are now the mainstay of the force for at least the next 20 years. "The new high-speed low drag missile can hit targets at over 250 kilometres and is going to boost the capability of the aircraft," defence sources told ANI. The capability would allow the Indian Air Force to strike down enemy military camps and terrorist infrastructure as it did during the Balakot operations in 2019 from well within its own territory. "The new missile would be important for the Su-30 fleet of the <keyword id="6355075" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iaf" source="Orion">IAF</keyword> as integrating long-range missiles from European or American origin would not be easy in view of the global situation," the sources said. The IAF is also upgrading the Su-30s in an upgrade programme expected to cost over Rs30,000 and would begin with 85 planes. The IAF currently has around 260 of these heavy air superiority fighter jets which are now flying in sync with the most modern Rafale fighter planes of the force. The IAF has strengthened the capabilities of the Su-30s in a big way with the addition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles which can hit targets at over 500 kilometres. The air-to-air missiles have also seen an upgrade while the made-in-India Astra - all weather beyond-visual-range air-to-air, and Rudram anti-radiation next-generation missiles have been added to the fleet. The BrahMos capability can help the Air Force to tackle any long-range tracking radar like that of the S-400 air defence systems.  Boeing formally handed over the aircraft keys to Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa at a function in Pathankot. "The IAF has been flying helicopters since 1954. Since then there has been no looking back. We have proved our mettle in various missions. We have operated various types of helicopters in the past," said Dhanoa.

 "Apache helicopter is an advanced multi-mission helicopter being operated worldwide by the US, UK, Israel and many numbers of countries. The helicopter has proved itself as an operational success across the world. It is one of the most fierce attack helicopters in the world," he added. Indian Air Force inducts eight combat-ready Apache helicopters at Pathankot air base

WASHINGTON: India’s newly-acquired American C-130J Super Hercules plane that crashed last week near Gwalior has been under intense scrutiny in the United States and <keyword id="6356687" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword> after a Senate investigation concluded that counterfeit parts in the aircraft’s display systems could cause it to "lose data or even go blank altogether" in midflight, with potentially catastrophic consequences. 
 A 2011-2012 investigation by the US Senate armed services committee eventually traced the counterfeit electronic parts used in the C-130J, C-27J, and many other US military systems to a company in <keyword id="95282" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shenzhen">Shenzhen</keyword>, China, called Hong Dark Electronic Trade Company. Hong Dark sold the parts at issue to Global IC Trading Group, an independent distributor in the US, which in turn sold it to L-3 Communications Display Systems, which in turn supplied it to Lockheed Martin, the US military’s prime contractor for the C-130J. 
 Amid scathing observations by the Senate panel, the <keyword id="6404246" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="US-Air-Force">US air force</keyword> suspended and banned Hong Dark in 2012 from competing for government contracts and subcontracts, but testimony before the armed services committee showed stunning lapses in the supply chain and procurement procedures for the military systems, including the C-130J Super Hercules, six of which New Delhi contracted to buy in 2010 for $1.1 billion, around Rs 1000 crores apiece. 
 
India has plans to buys six more to augment its transport fleet with the much-acclaimed aircraft, which has won plaudits for its safety record and its versatility. The acquisition enables the Indian military to put boots and supplies on the ground in remote and inhospitable terrain, giving it matchless reach in the region. 
 
However, the aircraft display systems itself will now come under scrutiny — if it already hadn’t been under the scanner — although the cause of the Gwalior crash is yet to be determined. The US Senate committee report is withering in its observations not only about US procurement and supply chain system, but also the casual manner in which private contractors treated the issue once the counterfeit parts were detected. 
 
The story begins in November 2010 when L-3 Display Systems detected that the company’s in-house failure rate for a chip installed on display units used in C-130J and C-27J had more than tripled from 8.5 per cent to 27 per cent. L-3 also noticed that the same part had previously failed on a fielded military plane. The company sent the chips for testing, which resulted in identification of "multiple abnormalities," with the tester concluding that the parts were "suspect counterfeit." 
 
"Failure of the memory chip could cause a display unit to show a degraded image, lose data, or even go black altogether," the Senate report said, noting that "unfortunately, L-3 Display Systems had already installed parts from the suspect lot on more than 400 of its display units," including those intended for the C-27J, as well as the C-130J. 
 
In effect, what the IAF’s court of inquiry will need to look at is whether India received any of the contaminated display units in the six C-130J it bought from the US, and if it did, whether the US, including Lockheed Martin, alerted IAF to it. India’s own procurement process, including whether the buyer tracked and followed up the troubles associated with the C-130J, including the Senate’s investigation, will also have to be reviewed. 
 
At least in Canada, another C-130J customer, a CBC investigation in early 2013 highlighted the troubles with the aircraft’s instrument panel, although the government there glossed over the issue initially. 
 
But the Senate investigation offers a disturbing picture of people up the supply chain not particularly alarmed at the contamination of crucial display systems with counterfeit parts. According to the senate report (page 35), following the detection of the fakes, L-3 Display Systems on November 4, 2010, issued a part purge notification, quarantining the company’s own stock of the suspect memory chips. 
 
It did not, however, recommend to its customer that assemblies affected by the suspect counterfeit chips be returned for replacement of those chips. As a result, hundreds of display units intended for and installed on C-130Js and C-27Js included the suspect counterfeit memory chip, well after its discovery by L-3 Display Systems. 
 Lockheed Martin, the US military’s prime contractor for the C-130J, does not cover itself with glory either in the episode. The Senate report notes that when L-3 notified Lockheed of the problem, Lockheed engineers discussed the matter internally and decided "no action" was necessary and the display units did not need to be returned for repair. Lockheed Martin also "did not formally notify the <keyword id="6354954" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Air-Force">Air Force</keyword> of the suspect counterfeit chip in the C-130J." 
 According to Senate investigators, while Lockheed Martin told the Air Force that the suspect counterfeit parts were "functionally complaint" to authentic <keyword id="1459679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="genuine-parts">genuine parts</keyword>, the Air Force was apparently not informed that the failure rate of the part had tripled during acceptance and environmental stress testing. 
 
The Senate report concluded that since its investigation, hearing and public release of information about the counterfeit chips, the US Air Force had reported that they are aggressively taking action to remove the parts in question, audit the supply chains etc. But as of March 2012, the report noted, Lockheed Martin had removed and replaced only a handful of the display units in the C-130J that are affected by the suspect counterfeit memory chip. 
 The worrying part for Indian defense planners is that the Senate panel talks of several other US military platforms, such as <keyword id="6357957" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Boeing">Boeing</keyword>’s P8A-Poseidon — a custom-made variant of which has been supplied to the <keyword id="6355100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword> — being contaminated with counterfeit Chinese parts. 
 
According to the US air force, "approximately 84,000 suspect counterfeit electronic parts purchased from Hong Dark entered the DoD supply chain, and many of these parts have been installed on DoD aircraft."
