Several states in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> are likely to see a power shortage in the coming weeks as power plants struggle to find optimum amounts of thermal coal amid rising summer demand, higher import costs and the resultant supply tightness, sources told S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights. Global thermal coal prices have remained elevated as a fallout of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which disrupted trade flows and crippled supply amid additional demand from <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>, which has now sanctioned Russian coal. As a result, imported coal has largely remained out of bounds for price-sensitive markets like India, S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights said. The shortage level was even higher at 80.08 million units on April 7, which raised concerns among several market participants, who said the crunch was near to mid-October 2021 levels when India faced an acute power crisis as the stockpile at 115 power plants slipped to critical levels. According to a notice issued by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. on March 31, reviewed by S&amp;P Global, the state has decided to temporarily curtail electricity supply to segments of agricultural power consumers in the state. Other provinces where high supply shortages were recorded on April 10 include <keyword id="6355554" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-pradesh" source="Orion">Madhya Pradesh</keyword> (9.67 MU), the union territories of Jammu and <keyword id="6354495" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kashmir" source="Orion">Kashmir</keyword> and Ladakh (cumulatively 4.65 MU), <keyword id="6354953" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="punjab" source="Orion">Punjab</keyword> (4.5 MU), Haryana (4.39 MU) and Jharkhand (2.29 MU). S&amp;P Global reported April 1 that India needs to increase thermal coal imports to meet rising power demand during the peak summers, even as import prices remain elevated due to supply tightness created by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India's state-run Coal India said March 28 that its pithead stock is expected to rise above 60 million mt by April 1, 39.39% lower than the corresponding period in the previous year. Coal stocks at Indian power plants stood at 25.5 million mt March 28, 12.96% lower on the year. India to face more power cuts amid coal shortage and rising demand

New Delhi, Apr 3 () India's peak power demand slipped over 25 per cent to 125.81 GW on Thursday compared 168.32 GW on April 2 amid the lockdown to contain COVID-19 outbreak, showed power ministry data.In actual terms, the demand fell around 43 GW on Thursday compared to the same day a year ago. However, the data showed that peak power demand met has stabilised around 120 GW after March 22. The government has imposed 3-week lockdown to fight the pandemic from March 24.The demand was down mainly due to lower requirements from industry and state power distribution companies (discoms) across the country due to the lockdown.The peak power demand met is the actual highest energy supply during the day across the country.According to the data, the peak demand met was 163.72 GW on March 20, which came down to 161.74 GW on March 21.This dropped sharply to 135.20 GW on March 22 due a call for 'Janata Curfew' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The data also showed that the peak demand met improved slightly to 145.49 GW on March 23 but fell again to 135.93 GW on March 24 and subsequently to 127.96 GW on March 25.The demand fell sharply to 120.31 GW on March 26 and to 115.23 GW on March 27, indicating continuous slump in demand.However, there was little improvement on March 28 as the peak demand met rose slightly to 117.76 GW and to 120.18 GW the following day. The demand stood at 120.79GW on March 30; 123.08 GW on March 31; 123.30 GW on April 1 and 125.81 GW on April 2.The peak power demand met was 168.7 GW in March and 176.81 GW in April last year.India's peak power demand (met) was recorded at 170.17 GW on March 3, 2020. During the remaining ten days of the last month, the peak power demand was 145.49 GW on March 23.The spot power price touched a three-year low of 60 paise per unit for supplies on last Wednesday (March 25) on the Indian Energy Exchange due to low demand. New Delhi, Apr 20 () The country's power demand slips 3.25 per cent to 123 GW in the morning on Monday as a slight drop in temperature neutralised any rise in electricity consumption on account of partial resumption of industrial activities post lockdown relaxations. Some states have decided to ease curbs including on industrial activities during the Covid-19 lockdown 2.0, which is in place till May 3 in the country. "The peak power demand met was 123 GW at 9:30 AM on Monday compared to 127 GW last week around same time," a source told . The expected rise of power demand did not happen because of cold weather across the country which may not be the case in coming days, the source added. The peak power demand met is the actual highest energy supply during the day across the country. During April last year, the peak power demand met was 176.81 GW. Thus the power demand is down by almost one-third, raising concerns among industry bodies and analysts in view of the financial stress the sector is facing. The discoms (distribution companies) owe more than Rs 92,000 crore to gencos (generating companies) as of February 2020. Industry body CII has already stated in its report that discoms are going to suffer a revenue loss of Rs 30,000 crore due to lower demand and will face a liquidity crunch of Rs 50,000 crore. However, industry experts expect power demand in the country to rise from the present levels as the demand of industrial and commercial establishments would rise due to soaring temperature in coming days. New Delhi, Apr 1 () India's power consumption fell 9.24 per cent to 100.13 billion units in March compared to 110.32 billion units in the year-ago period mainly on account of lower commercial and industrial demand due to the lockdown imposed to fight COVID-19. According to the National Load Dispatch Centre Data, the energy consumption stood at 100.13 billion units (BU) in March as compared to 110.32 BU a year ago. The data also showed that during March 22-31, the power demand remained quite low as compared to March 1-21 period. In view of the COVID-19 outbreak, the government has imposed lockdown for three weeks from March 25. India's peak power demand (met) was recorded at 170.17 GW on March 3 during the three-week period (till March 21) without COVID-19 impact on consumption. During the remaining ten days of the month, the peak power demand was 145.49 GW on March 23. Therefore, the data suggests that the peak power demand met fell by about 25GW or 17 per cent. However, during the last ten days of March, the peak power demand was also at a level of 115.23 GW on March 27. During the first three weeks of the month, the peak power demand met hovered at around 160GW. The peak power demand met is the actual highest energy supply during the day across the country. The spot power price touched a three-year low of 60 paise per unit for supplies on last Wednesday (March 25) on the Indian Energy Exchange due to low demand.The average spot power price is hovering around Rs 2 per unit at electricity exchanges.
