In Q2 2023, the Indian PC market consisting of desktops, notebooks, and workstations shipped 3.2 million units. According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), while the Indian PC market reported a quarterly growth of 5.4%, there was a 15.3% year-on-year decline. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Decline across categories" comment="subhead" text="Decline across categories">Decline across categories</cmsannotation> Q2 2023 witnessed a decline across all segments. The notebook category which has the highest market share declined by 18.5% year-on-year, while the desktop category declined by 7% year-on-year. While the premium notebooks category reported a 30.7% decline year-on-year, it grew by 39% in Q2 2023 compared to Q2 2022. “The India consumer PC segment has started showing signs of recovery as market sentiment is improving. Despite a YoY double-digit decline, it clocked a strong double-digit QoQ growth. Indian PC market declines for fourth consecutive quarter, reports 15% decline

In India, procuring a mobile phone or tablet is easier than laying your hands on a PC. Yes, we do have one of the largest <keyword id="28355" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="PC-market">PC market</keyword>s in Asia, located in Delhi, where hundreds of PC’s get sold everyday. However, computers sales have declined from the last quarter. According to an <keyword id="6377157" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IDC">IDC</keyword> report, the PC market grew 8.4% (year on year) in the July-September quarter in 2013, but it went down by 8.3% over second quarter of 2013 (quarter on quarter). 
 The slow adoption of special education projects in states like Uttar Pradesh and <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, and a much delayed spending in the year from the BFSI segment have largely skewed the overall growth in Q3 towards the commercial segment. As per IDC experts, the final quarter of 2013 will also see a decline in PC sales due to the legislative assembly elections across the country, as well as price hikes. 
 The report also states that <keyword id="6367983" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="HP">HP</keyword> is still the dominant player with more than 32% <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword> in the Indian PC segment, followed by <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword> and <keyword id="28251" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dell">Dell</keyword>.

Drop By 8.3% – HP Is Still Ruling

<ul><li>The Indian PC market recorded its second-best quarter with a shipment of 4.49 million devices in Q3 2024.</li><li>The growth in part is due to the online festival sales by e-commerce giants and retailers.</li><li>HP continues to lead the Indian PC market with a share of over 29%.</li></ul> The Indian personal computer or PC market has recorded its second highest-ever shipments at 4.49 million devices in Q3 2024, recording a 0.1% growth year-on-year. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the growth in sales was recorded due to online festival sales which began early this year. “The e-tail sales, which typically start around the second week of October, began in late September, leading to a surge in PC shipments,” said Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager, IDC India &amp; South Asia. In Q3 2024, desktops recorded an 8.1% year-on-year decline, notebooks recorded a 2.8% year-on-year growth and workstations recorded a 2.4% year-on-year growth. Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 recorded a 7.6% year-on-year growth. “Brands capitalized on e-tail sales by offering steep discounts, cashback, and bundled accessories. Many of them also matched similar pricing in their brand stores and offline channels like Larger Format Retail stores (LFRs), leading to the second biggest consumer quarter in history,” Shenoy added. India’s PC market reaches new high with 4.49 million shipments in Q3 2024

New Delhi, Jan 8 () German car maker BMW on Wednesday reported 13.8 per cent dip in its sales at 9,641 units in India last year as compared with 11,105 units in 2018.
 The luxury automaker despatched 9,000 BMW and 641 Mini units in 2019.
 Besides, BMW Motorrad sold 2,403 motorcycles last year.
 "2019 was not an easy year for the Indian automotive industry as various macroeconomic and structural conditions shook its foundations," BMW Group India President and CEO Rudratej Singh said in a statement.
 BMW Group India, however, stood its ground in this fierce environment with a slew of new products and very aspirational and desirable brands, he added.
 "We successfully initiated new consumers to come into the segment with the BMW 3 Series and the BMW X1. At the same time, we created a clear path for upgrade for segment users with the BMW X5, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW 7 Series," Singh said.
 The company has a healthy order book for the BMW X7 which is sold out for months, he added.
 "Though the industry is still facing difficult times, we are well prepared for 2020. We will always be competitive by remaining focused on our customers," Singh said.
 The company said last year it witnessed over 50 per cent sales come from the locally-produced sports activity vehicle (SAV) range, including BMW X5, BMW X3 and BMW X1.
 A strong contribution also came from BMW 5 Series and BMW 3 Series, it added.
 Similarly, MINI hatchback and the locally-produced MINI Countryman together commanded a share of over 70 per cent in Mini India sales, the German carmaker said. MSS

BMW India sales decline 13 pc to 9,641 units in 2019

New Delhi, May 5 () Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited (KPTL) on Tuesday said it has successfully completed sale of its entire stake in Kalpataru Satpura Transco Private Limited (KSTPL) to CLP India Private Limited. CLP India is owned by CLP Group, one of the largest investor-owned power businesses in Asia, and Caisse de dpt et placement du Qubec (CDPQ), one of Canada's leading institutional fund managers. The company, however, did not disclose the financial details of the transaction. In a filing to the BSE on Tuesday, the company said "the company has successfully completed sale of its entire 100 per cent stake in KSTPL to CLP. Consequently, KSTPL ceased to be a subsidiary of the company with effect from November 20, 2019. The filing further added that KPTL has "received full consideration towards sale of its stake in KSTPL to CLP in November 2019." In July 2019, KPTL had said that it has entered into binding agreements with Canada's institutional fund manager CDPQ's arm CLP India to sell its stake in three power transmission assets -- KSTPL, Alipurduar Transmission Ltd (ATL) and Kohima Mariani Transmission Ltd (KMTL) referred jointly as SPVs -- for an estimated enterprise value of Rs 3,275 crore. Meanwhile, as terms of the agreement dated July 3, 2019, between the KPTL, ATL and CLP, the company was to transfer its entire 100 per cent stake in ATL to CLP, upon achieving commercial operations of both the elements of the transmission line, which was achieved in January 2020. The agreement however was recently terminated on account of non-fulfilment of certain conditions precedent as per the agreed terms. "The company is now actively pursuing and evaluating opportunities to sell its stake in ATL to suitable investor(s)," it said. The company also entered into another agreement dated July 3, 2019, to transfer its entire 74 per cent stake in KMTL to CLP upon achieving commercial operations of the transmission line. KPTL said the construction work relating to the KMTL project is "progressing well" and commercial operations are likely to be achieved by July-August 2020. Post commercial operations of the KMTL project and satisfaction of conditions precedent including obtaining the requisite regulatory and other approvals, as stipulated under the agreement, the company will transfer its stake in KMTL to CLP, it noted. The company further said it is also actively pursuing and evaluating opportunities to sell its stake to suitable investor(s) in Jhajjar KT Transco Pvt Ltd (JKTPL), which has been operating since March, 2012 and wherein it holds 49.72 per cent. "We have successfully transferred the Satpura transmission asset in FY19-20. We are actively pursuing and evaluating the opportunities to sell Jhajjar asset, while evaluation of new buyers for Alipurduar asset has already started. "We remain confident to complete the Kohima asset as per the given timelines. Indian PC market records 7.1% growth in Q2 2024, HP leads with nearly a third market share

We have read half a dozen reports in the past few months which state the same fact— PC shipments are on the low as end consumers are picking up more tablets and mobiles. Yes, some PC companies are facing heavy losses in the arena, but the situation is not very poor (except for few). In the last quarter of 2013 PC manufacturers did seem upbeat and enthusiastic to sell more units in 2014. 
 However, the news of Sony trying to sell their Premium Vaio PC arm has stirred the situation and alarm bells are ringing all over. Sony did manage to sell their PC business to <keyword id="1199696" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Japan-Industrial-Partners">Japan Industrial Partners</keyword> last week and that has infused fresh speculations. The correct acquisition amount of the sale has not been disclosed but sources do say that it has been pegged at over 40 Billion Yen. Sony was incurring a loss of 1.1 Billion USD on their PC business and hence wanted to get rid of it. 
 The sale has brought new conjectures in the market after Sony’s exit. Possibly, the Vaio brand will no longer be available in markets outside Japan and this will hit the global shipments of laptop PC’s. After smarphones, the user interaction with <keyword id="473893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Desktop-PC">desktop PC</keyword>’s has gone. A decade ago, this was not the case as a PC or Laptop was the only and the best way to access the internet and manage your files and documents. 
 
Now people can access the internet from almost any connected device. The revolution of internet everywhere and cloud storage has further reduced the need of a PC. So is this the fall of the PC and would we see it die this year? Or the PC going to die a slow death? The later is the answer. Mobility is the key factor here. A desktop does not provide the mobility a tablet or a smartphone does. This is the reason why people go for a laptop or a tablet. 
 These days laptops are being preferred over the desktop. Compare it to half a decade ago in countries such as <keyword id="402752" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="India-PC">India PC</keyword> was the first jab at home computing. But today the households are also going for a laptop as their primary computing machine. The trend has changed over the last couple of years and people are slowly moving away from the desktop to more potable forms of computers. 
 
But there is a downside to mobility. A desktop has the power to be upgraded and the configuration can be changed as and when the user feels like. This is not the case with laptop, tablet and certainly not with the smartphone. One can expand memory in some smartphones or increase the RAM in a laptop and that is about it. You cannot change the screen, graphic card or the motherboard. The choices of customisation on a mobile device are limited and one has to go with what the company offers. 
 
Taking that into consideration we do not see the desktop PC market dieing soon. Its share will diminish but not evaporate. Smartphones are going to be the biggest gainers and tablets should also gain momentum. Laptops are going to gain favour in both households and SOHO’s. Desktops will still be favoured in large organisations and specialised offices. So overall, the picture for desktop PC market does not seem bright, but there is still a lot to play here for.

End Of The Desktop PC?

PC-maker <keyword id="28251" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dell">Dell</keyword> grew 25% in the Indian market in the first quarter of the current calendar year while other companies suffered a decline in sales. Shipments fell 25.2% year on year due to lack of demand. Dell grabbed a market share of 23.1%, as per the market research firm IDC, thus regaining its top position in the domestic <keyword id="6365259" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="PC">PC</keyword> market. The company grew 22.4% year-on-year in the commercial PC business. 
 <keyword id="6367983" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HP">HP</keyword> came up second with a market share of 20.4%. 
 
PC shipments stood at 1.01 million units in the first quarter of CY2014, a decline of 4.3% sequentially over the first quarter of 2013. “Consumers’ sentiments plummeted further due to high inflation and soaring prices, owing to rupee fluctuations. Concerns over the economic conditions remained a key drag and Q1 was no different,” said Kiran Kumar, research manager (client devices) at IDC India. 
 “Part of Dell’s growth in the consumer business could also be attributed to its success in capturing the retail shelf space left vacant by <keyword id="6358540" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sony">Sony</keyword> and <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> in the past while others, including HP, have not been able to successfully replicate the same,” said Kumar. 
 
“Since the privatisation of the company in October, we have been extremely aggressive in terms of product launches and making our products available at different price points,” said P Krishnakumar, executive director and general manager (consumer and small business) at Dell India. 
 
The company has been focusing on small towns to grow its business. Dell opened 160 exclusive stores in 120 small towns over the past one year. It also started shipment within a day to 1,000 towns.

Dell India Back On Top In Domestic PC Market

New Delhi, Jan 30 () Swedish fashion retailer Hennes &amp; Mauritz (H&amp;M) posted a 42.54 per cent rise in sales in India to 2,007 million Swedish krona (around Rs 1,486 crore) for the fiscal ended November 2019.
 The company had posted sales of 1,408 million Swedish krona (around Rs 1,043 crore) in 2018, the H&amp;M group said in its full-year report.
 H&amp;M, which follows the December-November financial year, also added eight more stores during the period in India, totalling to a network of 47 stores.
 Besides, H&amp;M also plans to roll out a customer loyalty programme in India.
 "H&amp;M upgraded the customer loyalty programme and now has more than 65 million members in 19 markets and will continue to be rolled out to additional markets in 2020, including India and South Korea," the company said in a post-earning statement.
 In 2019, H&amp;M launched a range of products on leading e-commerce platform Myntra, besides having presence in the online segment through its own channel.
 The H&amp;M group's global net sales increased 11 per cent to SEK 232,755 million in the 2019 financial year and the gross profit increased to SEK 122,453 million. SEK is an abbreviation for Swedish krona.
 "Sales growth was good in many markets in the fourth quarter. In India, sales increased 33 per cent in local currency, in Poland by 21 per cent, in Mexico by 18 per cent and in Russia by 12 per cent. In Sweden, sales increased by 7 per cent, while sales in the US and the UK increased by 6 and 3 per cent, respectively, said H&amp;M Chief Executive Officer Karl-Johan Persson said.
 Australia is scheduled to become a new H&amp;M online market in the second half of 2020, while in South Korea, it will launch the brand on the e-commerce platform SSG.COM.
 The group is also increasingly integrating online and physical stores for optimisation of the store portfolio.
 "Around 200 new stores are planned to open in 2020, mainly in growth markets, while at the same time, consolidation will continue with around 175 planned store closures, mainly in established markets. The net addition of new stores for full-year 2020 is expected to be around 25," the statement said.
 H&amp;M India Country Manager Janne Einola said, "We are delighted with the India results. Within 5 years in the country, Rs 1,500 crore sales show that the customers are happy with H&amp;M's business idea."

In total, sales on Cyber Monday this year grew 19% compared to sales in 2012, thanks in large part to shoppers who used their mobile devices to make purchases. 
According to an email sent to Bloomberg from IBM, mobile accounted for 30% of all Cyber Monday site traffic and, in turn, 16% of all Cyber Monday sales were made from a tablet or smartphone. The site traffic from mobile grew 58% compared to last year. 
On the other hand, Black Friday sales at physical retail outlets actually declined for the first time since the recession-stricken year 2009. Cyber Monday, especially on mobile devices, is truly becoming a factor in holiday shopping.

India’s PC market shipments surge in Q3 amidst import restrictions talks

As we said yesterday, this week is going to be full of new launches. Today was the turn of <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword> who have launched a super slim <keyword id="28168" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Smartphone">smartphone</keyword> with 5-inch touchscreen aimed at the youth of the country. Lenovo has started calling itself a PC+ company, as almost 50% of Lenovo’s sales are now coming from mobile phones and tablets. In general terms, PC+ means they are primarily a PC company with gadgets in allied verticals as well. 
 Today they showcased <keyword id="1857869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vibe-X">Vibe X</keyword> smartphone, which weighs 121 grams and is 6.9 mm thin.
