Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday stated that <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> technology is expected to inject around $450 billion into the <keyword id="19948184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-economy" source="keywords">Indian economy</keyword> by 2040. The minister highlighted this during his address at the Global Standards Symposium at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, one of the world's largest telecom events. He said, "In India alone, for example, 5G is anticipated to inject an astounding 450 billion dollars into the economy by 2040." The minister emphasized that 5G is not just about faster internet or low latency, but is laying the groundwork for <keyword id="20006420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-cities" source="keywords">smart cities</keyword>, advanced infrastructure, and autonomous innovations. Scindia further noted that 5G has already been rolled out across all 36 states and Union Territories, covering 98 per cent of districts and 80 per cent of the population in just 22 months. Things are transforming industries, societies and manufacturing processes and economies on a global scale," he said. Scindia also pointed out the need for robust governance in emerging technologies like AI and IoT, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks to address concerns around privacy, bias, and transparency. He called for a comprehensive policy framework to ensure that future innovations, such as the upcoming 6G technology, benefit everyone equitably and do not deepen existing digital divides. "We are today poised at the edge of a new technological era, the dawn of the 6th generation of mobile network 6G and this is a gateway to the future where communication will become boundless where innovation will know no limits and by humanity, interconnectedness becomes the corner stone of our shared global destiny" he said. Amul thinking to enter European market after US success, MD Jayen Mehta calls it the lifeline for rural India

New Delhi, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> is likely to account for more than a fifth of incremental global consumption for chemicals over the next two decades as domestic demand is projected to rise to USD 1,000 billion by 2040, McKinsey said in a report. In the report titled 'India: The next chemicals manufacturing hub', McKinsey said the country's chemical industry has been a global outperformer in demand growth and shareholder wealth creation over the last decade. "It now stands poised to play an increasingly dominant role across both consumption and manufacturing in the global arena," it said. The sector is projected to grow at 11-12 per cent during 2021-27 and 7-10 per cent during 2027-40 -- tripling its global market share by 2040. "India is expected to account for more than 20 per cent of incremental global consumption for chemicals over the next two decades. Domestic consumption and demand is expected to rise from USD 170-180 billion in 2021 to USD 850-1000 billion by 2040," it said. Chemicals find wide usage in human lives -- from detergents to clothing and fragrances, from insecticides to paints, and telecommunication to music and media. McKinsey said the growing demand for biofriendly products globally could benefit India, as it is among the leading producers of many chemicals that are used in such products. "Triggered by the evolving geopolitical scenario and the trend to diversify from the existing core manufacturing markets; firms are seeking to make their supply-chains more resilient. With its strong value proposition, India could be a preferred destination," it said. However, India will continue to be import dependent for meeting its needs for chemicals. Out of the three main segments of the sector -- inorganic, petrochemicals, and specialty -- only specialty is expected to be a net exporter. Due to limited cracker infrastructure and scarcity of key feedstock and minerals, both petchem and inorganic segments will be import dependent. "Over recent years, changing geopolitical scenarios have led to many countries focusing on domestic self-sufficiency and localised supply chains. However, benchmarking India's manufacturing competitiveness reveals that India has a strong starting point vs other key global chemical clusters that could translate into India becoming the next chemicals manufacturing hub," McKinsey said. "India will be the fastest growing global demand centre for chemicals with domestic consumption set to grow at a 9-10 per cent CAGR in the coming years on the back of rising disposable incomes, a favourable demographic dividend, increasing global preference for biofriendly alternatives, and growing diversification of global chemical supply chains," it said. The specialty chemicals segment is likely to be a key driver of this growth. It has the potential to contribute more than USD 20 billion to India's net exports by 2040, a 10 times jump from the current total of USD 2 billion. McKinsey said benchmarking against six global chemical clusters surfaces both India's strengths and areas of improvement as a global destination for manufacturing chemicals. "Indian chemical companies often face obstacles in feedstock availability due to lagging cracker capacity and low access to building blocks and key minerals". Additionally, India faces a dearth of skilled R&amp;D talent and challenges in timely environment and land approvals. "Despite this, India is cost competitive in several chemical segments due to low capital and operating expenses such as labour, utility and overhead expenses etc," it said. Coupled with promoters' focus on high profitability and a culture of process innovation, Indian chemical companies generate one of the highest EBITDA per unit of investment in fixed assets. "This is evident from global leadership of multiple Indian firms across segments like agrochemicals, pharma intermediates, dyes and pigments, carbon black etc," it said. Many sub-segments in India's chemicals sector offer opportunities for building at-scale businesses. Winning plays exist across specialty chemicals (agrochemicals, flavours &amp; fragrances, cosmetic chemicals), inorganic chemicals (caustic, fluorine) and petrochemicals (C4, C6 and C8 derivatives). "These sub-segments score high on both cost competitiveness -- a function of domestic feedstock availability, trade balance, capacity utilisation, scope of process and tech innovation -- and market attractiveness, an indicator of market size, demand growth, export potential," it added. India's chemical demand likely to jump to $1,000 billion by 2040

Tensions in Middle-East are rapidly inching closer to their zenith, with Iran firing about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel late yesterday night. In response today, the Indian markets witnessed their worst decline in two months, with Sensex dipping around 1,769 points, or 2.1% to close at 82,497.10. <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> followed suit and was also down by 2.1% to close the day at 25,250.10. As a result, about Rs 11 lakh crore were wiped off the market today. The decline was broad-based, with sectors like realty (dipped by over 4%) auto, and energy suffering the most. Broader indices also fell, losing nearly 2% each. The Hang Seng index, which had rallied over 14% during the last week, largely on the back of various stimulus measures announced by the central bank to stir consumption in the Chinese economy, also slumped around 1.47%. With the possibility of an all-out war between Iran and Israel looming on the horizon, threatening to happen sooner than later, markets are expected to remain volatile in near future. Even the India VIX, seen as a gauge of uncertainty and investor fear in the market, jumped over 9% during the day. The war could throw a huge spanner on India's crude oil import plans. As of August 2024, about 44.6% of India's crude oil imports came from <keyword id="19904316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="middle-east" source="keywords">Middle East</keyword>. Israel has already promised significant retaliation, in response to Iran's attack in the days to come. And the strong possibility of a full-blown Israeli attack in Middle East, particularly major oil fields in Iran has sent the crude oil prices surging. Closer home, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) was amongst the biggest gainers on NSE today. <h2>Should Indian investors worry? </h2>But is the impending action in Middle-East the only reason behind today's drastic fall? Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP, Research &amp; Advisory at Master Capital Services notes that while it plays a significant role, other factors are also at play. "Recent regulatory changes in the F&amp;O segment by SEBI is expected to impact trading volumes, as retail participation may decline due to the increased contract size and limits on weekly expiries. Meanwhile, strength in the Chinese market, following the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) stimulus package, has also diverted foreign investment to China, where valuations remain more attractive compared to India", he noted. But Upadhyay believes that the extension of losses in Indian markets wont last long. "From a technical perspective, as long as prices hold above the 25,250–25,100 zone, any decline could present an opportunity to build fresh long positions. A stock-specific approach is advisable, with sectors such as Oil, IT, PSU Banks, Metals, and Chemicals likely to outperform in the coming days", he adds. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities observes that as long as market is trading below 25,365/82,800, the weak sentiment is likely to continue. On the down side, it could slip till 25,150-25,025/82,200-82,000 as well. On the other side, one quick technical pullback is likely if the market succeeds to trade above 25,365/82,800. Above the same, it could bounce back till 25,475-25,500/83,100-83,300. New Delhi, <keyword id="18215287" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agro-chemical-firm-UPL" source="Orion">Agro-chemical firm UPL</keyword> on Monday reported 81 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 166 crore for the first quarter of this fiscal year on lower income. Its net profit stood at Rs 877 crore in the year-ago period. Revenue from operations also dipped 17 per cent to Rs 8,963 crore in April-June 2023-24 from Rs 10,821 crore in the same period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Mike Frank, CEO - UPL Corporation Ltd, said, "The global agrochemical industry has been going through a challenging phase over the last two quarters as distributors prioritized destocking and focused on tactical purchases amid high channel inventories." Additionally, he said, the market is witnessing pricing pressure due to higher base effect and aggressive price competition. "Given this backdrop, our revenue and profitability were also impacted by these headwinds in line with the rest of the industry," Frank said. India revenue fell marginally by 1 per cent to Rs 2,054 crore in April-June from Rs 2,067 crore in the same period last year. Revenue from Latin America fell 14 per cent to Rs 2,965 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal from Rs 3,464 crore in the year-ago period. In Europe, revenue fell 27 per cent to Rs 1,259 crore from Rs 1,728 crore. Revenue in North America declined 52 per cent to Rs 870 crore from Rs 1,796 crore. However, the turnover from the rest of the world rose 3 per cent to Rs 1,814 crore in April-June 2023-24 from Rs 1,765 crore in the year-ago period. UPL is one of the largest agriculture solutions companies worldwide. Its portfolio consists of biologicals and traditional crop protection solutions with more than 14,000 registrations. The company is present in 138 countries.
