<keyword id="150626" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HM">H&amp;M</keyword>'s Indian business clocked sales of Rs 704 crore (SEK 874) during December 2016- August 2017, compared to Rs291 crore (SEK 361) a year ago, it said in its nine-month performance report on Thursday. With about 17 stores until August, each generating an average of Rs 58 crore annually in sales, H&amp;M's performance is the best within the apparel space in the retail market. "The customers response to H&amp;M's global <keyword id="6" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="fashion">fashion</keyword>, quality and prices as well as our expansion strategy of opening stores in metros and tier 2 cities continues to drive strong growth," said Janne Einola, Country Manager, H&amp;M India. After opening its first store in October 2015, H&amp;M's Indian unit posted Rs 194 crore in sales during year-to-March 2016, with a net profit of Rs1.4 crore. It rose sharply to about Rs640 crore with net profit of Rs15 crore during last fiscal ended March 2017 through 15 stores, many of them barely few months old then. Spanish chain <keyword id="6377147" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zara">Zara</keyword>, a direct competition to H&amp;M has opened its first store in India in 2010, had set the benchmark as the fastest-growing - and now the biggest international apparel brand in India - with sales of Rs 1,023 crore during FY16-17. H&amp;M, the world's second-largest clothing giant, had said it will open 50 stores in India with an investment of Rs 700 crore by 2020. So far, they have opened 20 doors. The Stockholm-based brand stocks fast fashion items created in-house and teams up with designers for one-time collections. It keeps a large inventory of basic, everyday items sourced from places including India and Bangladesh that carry a lower price tag than most of its rivals. "Next year we plan to continue our online expansion into further countries, including India. The plan is that in the future we will offer online shopping in all store markets as well as in other markets," H&amp;M said in their investor The Indian retail market was worth $641 billion in 2016 and is expected to reach $1.6 trillion by 2026, according to the <keyword id="5284850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-business-of-fashion">India Business of Fashion</keyword> 2017 report.

H&M business more than doubles in India in last nine months, sales clock over 700cr

For the first time in three months, the <keyword id="1539949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Business-Sentiment">Indian business sentiment</keyword> saw a decline due to rising input prices. 
 A <keyword id="3151653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="MNI-India-Business-Sentiment">MNI India Business Sentiment</keyword> Indicator stated that the sentiment fell from 63.5 in February to present 62.7. 
 
The downward trend was seen more in manufacturing firms. However, the Indian business sentiment rose in construction firms and service sector companies. 
 
"It looks increasingly likely that the RBI will cut interest rates at its April meeting. Note, though, that input prices as well as prices charged have been trending higher recently, which will likely limit the extent of monetary easing," Chief Economist of MNI Indicators Philip Uglow said. 
 
"The decline in confidence in March was relatively modest and sentiment is still up from the recent trough in December. Importantly most key measures in the survey have stabilised and turned upwards in recent months following the trend decline that has been in place since September 2014," Uglow added. 
 
The survey noted that firms faced higher prices for their inputs and consequently, companies raised the prices they charged and expected them to increase further in the coming three months. 
 
Another factor that added to companies' outlays was the depreciation of the rupee. Companies said that this made their imports more expensive. The indicator measuring the effect of the rupee exchange rate fell further into contraction to 46.3 from 48.4 in February, the survey added.

India business sentiment falls, expectations rise on rate cut

New Delhi, The growth rate in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s business activity accelerated to a 7-month high in February driven by a strong demand for both manufacturing and services, according to a private economic survey released on Thursday. <keyword id="19916458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hsbc" source="keywords">HSBC</keyword>'s flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (<keyword id="19905748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pmi" source="keywords">PMI</keyword>), compiled by S&amp;P Global, rose to 61.5 this month from 61.2 in January, which is above the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction for the 31st consecutive month. "The pace of acceleration in the output of India's manufacturers and service providers, combined, was at a 7-month high in February. Encouragingly, new export orders rose sharply, particularly for goods producers," said <keyword id="20045866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pranjul-bhandari" source="keywords">Pranjul Bhandari</keyword>, chief India economist at HSBC. The manufacturing PMI for February rose to 56.7 from last month's 56.5, its highest since September, and the preliminary services PMI rose to 62.0 from 61.8 in January to reach its highest level in the last 7 months. Overall international orders increased at the fastest pace since September. The survey is in tune with the <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> bulletin released on Tuesday which states that the Indian economy continues to sustain the momentum achieved in the first half of 2023-24 and a fresh round of capital expenditure by the corporate sector is expected to fuel the next leg of growth. Consumer confidence strengthened further in January 2024, driven especially by optimism about the general economic situation and employment conditions, as per the RBI's latest survey of households. Various enterprise surveys also point towards strong business optimism, the RBI bulletin points out. It also states that high frequency indicators point towards sustained strength in demand conditions in the economy during January 2024. E-way bills grew by 13.2 per cent in December 2023. Toll collections expanded by 15.5 per cent year-on-year in January 2024, although they sequentially moderated from a record in the previous month. Automobile sales had registered an expansion of 23.3 per cent year-on-year in January with two wheeler sales recording double digit growth. Retail tractor sales recorded a seven-month high growth at 21.2 per cent year-on-year in January 2024. Vehicle registrations recorded strong year-on-year growth.

India's business activity surges to 7-month high in February

New Delhi: The merger of media assets of Reliance Industries and the India business of global media house the Walt Disney is expected to be complete by the end of the third quarter of this fiscal, according to a regulatory filing by billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led group. The fair trade regulator CCI has already approved the merger of Viacom 18 and <keyword id="19976122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Star-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Star India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Star India">Star India</keyword> and NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal) has sanctioned the scheme regarding it. "The companies are in the process of obtaining other requisite approvals for the completion of the transaction and transaction closer is expected in 3Q FY 25," informed Reliance Industries on Monday in its quarter earning statement. The merger of Reliance group-controlled media assets - TV18 Broadcast and E18 - with Network18 Media &amp; Investments has already been sanctioned by the NCLT and was made effective on October 3, it said. Earlier on September 27, the government approved the transfer of licenses relating to Non News &amp; Current Affairs TV channels held by media entities of Reliance Industries to Star India. "The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, vide its order dated September 27, has granted its approval for transfer of Licenses relating to Non News &amp; Current Affairs TV channels held by <keyword id="19976121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Viacom18" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Viacom18" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Viacom18">Viacom18</keyword> Media Private Limited in favour of Star India," it had said. Viacom18 is the holding company that owns the media and entertainment business of billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and Bodhi Tree Systems. Both sides are in the final stages of the merger, making some adjustments in the business as per the Competition Commission of India (CCI) directions. On August 30, the NCLT had approved the scheme of merger of Viacom18 Media and Digital 18 Media, holding media and entertainment assets of Reliance Industries with Star India. The scheme had proposed the transfer and vesting of Media Operations Undertaking from Viacom 18 and Jio Cinema into Digital18, which is a subsidiary of Viacom 18. This would be followed by "demerger, transfer and vesting of V18 Undertaking from Digital 18 into Star India". The merger of the media assets of Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Co.'s India business will create the country's largest media empire worth over Rs 70,000 crore. Earlier, the CCI had said it has cleared the "proposed combination involving Reliance Industries Ltd, Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd, Digital18 Media Ltd, Star India Pvt Ltd and Star Television Productions Ltd, subject to the compliance of voluntary modifications". Viacom18 is part of the RIL group, and Star India is wholly owned by The <keyword id="19986269" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Walt-Disney-Company" source="keywords">Walt Disney Company</keyword>. Star Television Productions, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, is owned indirectly by Walt Disney. The CCI, however, did not disclose voluntary modifications in the original deal made by the two parties. As per the deal, Mukesh Ambani-led RIL and its affiliates will hold 63.16 per cent of the combined entity that will house two streaming services and 120 television channels. Walt Disney will hold the remaining 36.84 per cent stake in the combined entity, which will also be India's largest media house. Reliance Industries has also agreed to invest close to Rs 11,500 crore into the joint venture to give it the muscle to fight rivals like Japan's Sony and Netflix. Nita Ambani, wife of billionaire and RIL Chairman <keyword id="19916798" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="keywords">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, will head the joint venture, while Uday Shankar will be the vice-chairperson.

Reliance expects to complete merger with Disney's India business in Q3

Edtech major BYJU'S on Wednesday announced several measures to bolster its <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> business, saying that its K-10 business, which includes Toppr, <keyword id="1573710" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meritnation" source="Orion">Meritnation</keyword>, <keyword id="192259" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tutorvista" source="Orion">TutorVista</keyword>, <keyword id="14957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="scholar" source="Orion">Scholar</keyword>, and HashLearn platforms, will now be consolidated as one business unit. To avoid redundancies and duplication of roles, the move will result in five per cent of its 50,000-strong workforce (about 2,500 people) being "rationalised across product, content, media, and technology teams in a phased manner", the company said in a statement. Aakash Educational Services and Great Learning will continue to function as separate organisations, the company said in a statement. "As a mature organisation that takes its responsibility towards investors and stakeholders seriously, we aim to ensure sustainable growth alongside strong revenue growth. These measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023," said Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business. At a group level, BYJU'S said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". Over the last three years, BYJU'S acquired multiple companies whose integration with its core business is now complete. BYJU'S said at the group level, it will continue to hire across all levels and will end this financial year as a net hirer. The company plans to hire a total of 10,000 more teachers in the coming year, adding to its current strength of 20,000 teachers. It said it is expanding its teams along with hiring senior leadership to further build operational strength. The company said there will also be re-targeting of the marketing budget towards more efficient growth. "Since significant brand awareness has been created in India over the past few years, there is a scope to optimise marketing budgets locally and prioritise spending to increase brand awareness in overseas markets," the company said. BYJU'S said it is also reinventing its sales model to focus more on inside sales, using video calling platforms which in turn will enhance customer experience and reduce operational costs. Multiple inside sales hubs will now be created across India from where BYJU'S sales associates will reach out to incoming leads through calls, email, and <keyword id="10296" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zoom" source="Orion">Zoom</keyword> meetings. Inside sales will lead to higher customer satisfaction and lower costs. "None of these measures will have any impact on our revenue run rate," said Mohit. After six stressful and tough months, the company's Co-founder Byju Raveendran recently said that "the worst is finally over" and there is only "growth ahead" as seen in the company's FY22 financial results, where it logged Rs 10,000 crore in gross revenues. BYJU's last month paid the remaining dues of nearly Rs 1,983 crore (over $245 million) to global VC firm Blackstone in the $1 billion acquisition of Aakash. West has a perspective about Indian marriages. Arranged ‘happy’ marriage is something west has not been able to understand till date, much to the chagrin of Indians who have been taking pride in the fool-proof system where families come together instead of just two people – much like a curated bollywood film. All that’s well; ends well too! 
 
 But with the advent of technology, and most of the upper middle class youth accessing internet through various means, decisions are often at finger tips. Click and find a doorway into something new, something exciting and something that’s far from the world around. 
 
Much after the dotcom bubble burst and internet settled into a moderately-paced mode, India took to matrimonial websites with much ado. While the traditional middleman became redundant, Indian youth also took a plunge into dating sites. 
 
And, in the last few years, dating has turned as casual as can ever be. Unlike previous generations which met and dated with the intention of taking things further, India today is fearless and free for experimentation. 
 
Forget marriage, Indians have been very progressive about casual dating, even when things do not lead to marriage. Since it is aided by technology, heartbreaks are much more matured and respectful – sometimes all too contrary. 
 
Dating websites such as Truly Madly or Footloose no more, Sirf Coffee, all cater to different set of people. Actually, dating puts a lot of things in perspective without giving scope for any ambiguity. Soulmate in a box (SMIB) is a new dating trend that brings home the reality that cyber intimacy is here to stay, and it might be long before we discover something else that can replace this. 
 
Youth believe meeting through dating sites is more like meeting a client to set right expectations, without leading on false pretexts. That way, terms and conditions are much clear for both parties. When breakup happens, and if it happens, it is mostly a smooth operation without too much of pain or embarrassing moments involved. 
 
Coming to think of it, the informal tone of dating sites has a great upside to it. This is somewhat a super significant thing about modern life and the access it provides to various aspects of life that otherwise would have gotten difficult. 
 
Now, everything is ‘not so rosy’ about dating online, with the help of some basic details about each other. Falling in love over common friends, similar likes, almost identical political opinions, hobbies et al, don’t make for a real meeting that actually might fall apart when it happens. 
 
On the other hand, dating sites promise a great growth in terms of revenues too. In countries like US, where dating is a done and accepted practice, the growth of dating sites is saturated. The growth is restricted to about 12 to 15%. But, countries like India hold greater promise than that. The growth of dating sites here is anywhere between 15 – 20%, with China also being in the similar league. 
 
 Culturally, India and China present the same scenario. Both are old civilisations, and rely on ancient practices for modern life. Hence, a clash lands them at the doorstep of technology and sometimes, science, which may provide answers. 
 
As the whole idea of marriage and relationship goes through a sea of change, India as a melting pot of cultures, is going through a revolution of sorts. Today, most Indians are comfortable with the thought of dating a person before getting married. Of course, this is restricted to urban upper middle class, which is at crossroads with culture and modernity. 
 
Whatever be the change, dating sites will remain gung-ho even after that, for an eternal optimist who hopes to see a pot of gold at the end of the dating rainbow.

In India, Business Of Love Is A Pot Of Gold

New Delhi, Jan 21 () Zomato on Tuesday said it has acquired the Indian business of Uber Eats in an all-stock deal that will give Uber 9.99 per cent stake in the Indian food delivery and restaurant discovery platform.
Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform, effective Tuesday, a statement said.
In a regulatory filing to BSE, Info Edge (India) - a shareholder in Zomato - said its shareholding in Zomato will stand reduced to about 22.71 per cent on fully converted and diluted basis upon closing of the transaction.
The deal comes days after Zomato had raised USD 150 million in funding from existing investor Ant Financial, an Alibaba affiliate, at a USD 3 billion valuation. 
"We are proud to have pioneered restaurant discovery and to have created a leading food delivery business across more than 500 cities in India. This acquisition significantly strengthens our position in the category," Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal said.
Uber Eats, which entered India in 2017, has about 26,000 restuarants listed on its platform from 41 cities.
Zomato's restaurant discovery and food delivery platform has information for over 1.5 million restaurants across 24 countries and serves more than 70 million users every month.
Discussions between Zomato and Uber have been on for months. Facing stiff competition from Zomato and Swiggy, Uber Eats had been making losses.
Uber had projected an operating loss of Rs 2,197 crore in its food delivery business for the five months through December 2019, according to a valuation report prepared by KPMG affiliate BSR and was part of regulatory filings.
According to sources, Uber Eats India business contributed three per cent of the global gross bookings but accounted for over 25 per cent of adjusted EBIDTA losses for the first three quarters of 2019.
With the sale of the food business in India, Uber can now focus on the rides business and driving it towards profitability, one of the persons said.
"India remains an exceptionally important market to Uber and we will continue to invest in growing our local Rides business, which is already the clear category leader. We have been very impressed by Zomato's ability to grow rapidly in a capital-efficient manner and we wish them continued success," Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said in the statement. SR RUP

Zomato acquires Uber Eats business in India

MUMBAI: IT major <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> has remained firm after reporting a 3.5 per cent cut in Q1 net profit. The change of guard at Infosys, with <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> taking over as the <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword>, has been positively accepted by both the Infosys employees and investor community 
 
Since taking over, Sikka has taken five key steps, early signs of which seem to suggest that there has been a change in the mood from near-despondency to excitement. 
 
Sikka’s 5-point strategy includes winning confidence of seniors, promoting engineers, connecting with employees, meeting clients and meeting venture capitalists. 
 
“Infosys was going through a period of internal struggle and turmoil and it came to grips with a generational change in leadership,” said Dipen Sheth, Head-Institutional Research, HDFC Securities, to ET Now. 
 
“By and large the ship has been steadied now. It is a fantastic business. It has got lots of cash on the balance sheet. It has got probably the best or close to the best name that one can think of in terms of brand salience in Indian IT,” he added. 
 
According to him, the inflexion point in Infosys happened when the sentiment was at its worst near Rs 3,000. 
 
“If you will allow me the luxury of hindsight, I do not think there is much that can go wrong unless they shoot themselves in the foot from here on. I do not see how you can lose money in Infosys,” Sheth added. 
 <keyword id="48670" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Morgan-Stanley">Morgan Stanley</keyword> is of the view that Infosys can surprise the street positively on margins. 
 “Going by historical patterns, we think the <keyword id="54324" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-business">India business</keyword> will revert to profitability from 2Q15 and could boost Infosys’ overall margins. Overall, we believe Infosys could continue to surprise the Street positively on operating margins, and earnings estimates could further move up over the coming quarters,” the report said. 
 
The brokerage will now be looking for factors such as pickup in revenue growth in 2Q, strong deal wins, sustenance of FY guidance and strategy possibly from the new CEO in the second quarter results. 
 
Morgan Stanley has a target of Rs 4,000 on the stock.

So I'm very hopeful that at some stage we come to a conclusion, but don't ask me about the timeline. I think it will take some time," he added. "We will try to develop the future of this partnership during these consultations.
