Their average salaries and best offers swelled too exponentially this year. At IIT Madras, the average salary offered rose 30% to ₹16 lakhs per annum. IIT Jodhpur did not reveal the average salary. It said that the best offer received rose by a whopping 90%, without mentioning the actual salary. Around 16% of the students in Madras got pre-placement offers from companies in which they were working as interns. MTech placements soared by around 158% compared with the preceding year in Jodhpur. While IIT Madras clocked in 100% placements, IIT Jodhpur says that they have successfully placed 97% of BTech, 75% of our MTech and 100% of their MBA students. At IIT Madras, maximum job opportunities were available in the consulting and analytics space. IIT Madras average salary rises 30% while IIT Jodhpur’s best salary rises 90%

Chennai, <keyword id="6354645" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="researchers">Researchers</keyword>, at the <keyword id="55119" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>) Madras, have found that the <keyword id="50472" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="process">process</keyword> of virus-laden droplets being transported into deep lung increases with decreasing <keyword id="10577485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="breathing-frequency">breathing frequency</keyword>. The team modelled the breathing frequency in a laboratory and found that low breathing frequency increases the time of residence of the virus and therefore, it increases chances of deposition and consequently the infection. Also, the multi-scale lung structure has a significant effect on a person's susceptibility to Covid-19. "Covid-19 has opened a gap in our understanding of deep pulmonological systemic diseases. Our study unravels the mystery behind how particles are transported and deposited in the deep lung," the researcher, Mahesh Panchagnula, Department of Applied Mechanics, <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras">IIT Madras</keyword>, said in a statement on Monday. "The study demonstrates the physical process by which <keyword id="9415137" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aerosol-particles">aerosol particles</keyword> are transported into the deep generations of the lung," Panchagnula added. The research team worked to gain a deeper understanding of how the rate of flow of droplet laden with virus determines the deposition of the virus in the lungs. In their research, the team reported that holding the breath and having low breathing rate can increase chances of virus deposition in the lungs. Airborne infections such as Covid-19 spread immensely through sneezing and coughing as it instantly releases a lot of tiny droplets. The research team imitated the droplet dynamics in the lung by studying the movement of droplets in the small capillaries which were of a diameter similar to bronchioles. They took water mixed with fluorescent particles and generated aerosols from this liquid using a nebulizer. These fluorescent aerosols were used to track the movement and deposition of particles in the capillaries. The researchers studied the movement of the fluorescent aerosol particles in capillaries of size ranging from 0.3 to 2 millimetres which covers the range of bronchiole diameters. They found that the deposition is inversely proportional to the aspect ratio of capillaries, which suggests that the droplets are likely to deposit in longer bronchioles. IIT Madras and Great Learning launch a new online certificate programme

<keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword>' annual cultural fest '<keyword id="542908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saarang">Saarang</keyword>' themed 'enchanted forest' is back this year in a new avatar. In a bid to raise awareness about the government's drive to go digital, it has gone completely cashless in the fest season. 
 
That means, from food stalls to ticket sales, visitors are swiping their debit cards or using online wallets and other digital modes to make payments. Bank representatives on the campus are guiding visitors. 
 
In line with the fresh theme of the event, the organising team has focused on ambience so a walk through the campus can give visitors a feel of walking in the woods. 
 
To make up for the loss of green cover that took a hit during the December cyclone, the Saarang team will also be planting 100 saplings on the campus. 
 The fest will see 90 large scale competitive events, 200 informal shows, 14 lecture demonstrations, 6 professional shows and 7 world culture show acts, including graffiti, sand art and street dancing. Other than classical, choreo, EDM and rock shows, a feature is the spotlight lectures which in cludes a line-up of doyens like T M Krishna, Prachi Tehlan, Anirudh Ravichander, Shekhar Gupta, Siddharth and <keyword id="121606" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Menon">Gautam Menon</keyword>, among others. According to the Financial Times, phony recruitments are being run by scammers pretending to be employers on Microsoft-owned LinkedIn. "There's certainly an increase in the sophistication of the attacks and the cleverness," Oscar Rodriguez, LinkedIn's vice president of product management, was quoted as saying in the report. The platform has sought to block tens of millions of fake accounts in recent months, as regulators warn of a spike in job-related frauds. Cyber security company <keyword id="2426820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zscaler" source="Orion">Zscaler</keyword> recently described a scam that targeted job aspirants, where fraudsters approached people through LinkedIn's direct messaging feature InMail. HCL acquires majority stake in vernacular edtech platform GUVI

The older IITs are unsure of the parameters and transparency in the process. “Leading IITs i.e. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee have decided to not participate in any of the Times Higher Education (THE) - World University Rankings this year," the IITs <a href="https://www.livemint.com/education/news/seven-top-iits-boycott-the-world-university-rankings-11587051969147.html">said in a joint statement</a>. However, they said that the decision would be reconsidered next year, provided the higher education ranking publication is able to reassure the institutions in India on their ranking procedure. The development comes after the clashes between THE and IIT Bombay when their international rank slipped further. IIT Bombay argued that the institute had not given any data for the evaluation, the last data they gave to THE for university rankings was for 2017. THE however said that they received the data. The university rankings featured only six Indian universities in the top 500. In fact, none of them made it to the top 300 universities list. This had happened for the first time in the last seven years — despite an increase in the number of Indian institutions featuring on the list. IIT Delhi’s director too said that they are making a significant contribution to the innovation system in the country. “If Delhi NCR has the highest number of tech startups/unicorns in India, IIT Delhi has played a role in it. If 14 of the 24 unicorns created by Indians are by the alumni of one single institution — IIT Delhi, then it is surely doing something right,” V Ramgopal Rao, director at IIT Delhi <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/seven-iits-drop-out-of-participation-in-times-higher-education-rankings-2020-5155441.html">said last year</a> when <keyword id="1582424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="THE-Rankings">the rankings</keyword> came in. Seven IITs boycott THE world rankings after IIT Bombay’s tiff with them

The startup fever has now gripped faculty members of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who are now, independently or collaboratively, coming up with their own ventures and turning entrepreneurs. 
 Faculty members of <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> from across India, including Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur and Hyderabad, are leading the trend. Nineteen startups were only from IIT Madras in 2014-15. 
 An Economic Times report quoted <keyword id="2914509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravikrishnan-Elangovan">Ravikrishnan Elangovan</keyword> (33) who joined <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>'s department of biochemical engineering and biotechnology as assistant professor in 2010 where he met Vivekanandan Perumal and Shalini Gupta, both of whom had also joined the institute as faculty members after their post-doctoral degrees from the US. The trio wanted to develop a solution for typhoid diagnosis, for which they put up a proposal with the department of biotechnology in 2013 and got funded. 
 
Faculty forming new companies is an integral part of the academia-entrepreneurship intersection in the US, especially in places like Stanford and MIT. But the trend is slowly gaining momentum here in India as well. 
 
As per the report published in the financial daily, IIT Madras has so far spawned 16 startups that have been founded or co-founded by its faculty members. Thirty of the 89 tech start-ups birthed at the institute have faculty members as founders or minority shareholders. 
 <keyword id="2914508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras-Incubation-Cell">IIT Madras Incubation Cell</keyword> CEO Tamaswati Ghosh said, "We are witnessing an increasing trend of joint collaboration between faculty members and their current and graduated students, with research being translated into commercial ventures/companies." 
 
At IIT Kharagpur, the first such registration for a joint venture between a faculty member and a student happened way back in 2007, such instances have gained momentum recently. "For the past two to three years, we're getting registrations from three to four such companies each year," says PP Das, head of Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship at IIT Kharagpur. One more such company — in the Internet security business — is likely to get registered next month.

After US, faculty startups are now finding their feet in India

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. India’s premier institution Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay moved up by ten spots to the 152th rank, according to <keyword id="2893769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-University-Rankings">QS University Rankings</keyword> 2020. The Indian institutions that featured in the top 500 universities included <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword>, <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>, <keyword id="841588" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IISc-Bangalore">IISc Bangalore</keyword>, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, University of Delhi and IIT Guwahati. Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University emerged as the top three universities, according to the report. IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

Companies and startups are ready to raid engineering and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=B-school+">B-school</a> campuses across India this placement season, adding to the fierce war for talent already raging between large e-Commerce companies and established old-world recruiters. 
 
The startups which are looking for fresh talents include ShopClues, LocalOye, Urban-Clap, PropTiger, Indus Insights, MyRefers, CodeNation, Embibe, Jombay, Lybrate and ShadowFax. 
 
Moreover, a survey of 11 startups suggests they will step up overall <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=campus+hiring+">campus hiring</a> to 770 students from the Class of 2016 compared with only 250 that they hired from the last batch. 
 
Bulk of this hiring will be across top engineering colleges and B-schools, including Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management. 
 
Don’t be disappointed if you are not studying in the above mentioned institutes as a handful will also recruit at leading undergraduate colleges including Shri Ram College of Commerce, Lady Shri Ram College and St Stephen's, and design schools such as National Institute of Design and National Institute of Fashion Technology. 
 
Now comes the most interesting part- salary! Average salaries offered by these startups range between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 18 lakh at engineering colleges and B-schools, say campus sources. Prop-Tiger, for instance, is paying upwards of Rs 15 lakh plus benefits at tech schools; CodeNation will pay around Rs 24 lakh. 
 
At least three of these startups — Lybrate, LocalOye and ShadowFax — are first-timers on campus while others, at the very least, are doubling last year's numbers. In some cases, hiring targets are going up five-fold or even 16-fold compared with last year. 
 
The strategies behind the hiring are discussed below: 
1. Depending on the kind of institutes, students are being hired for a variety of roles: from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=software+development+engineers">software development engineers</a>; core management &amp; data scientists; product, operations and marketing; merchant acquisition and servicing, to human resource management, product and graphic designers and even entrepreneurs in residence. Sanjay Mehta, a Mumbai-based angel investor who participated in and led 11 angel deals in 2015, says the reason why startups are so gung-ho about <keyword id="511161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="campus-hiring">campus hiring</keyword> is because they want to put this talent to work on cutting-edge technology and new delivery models. Not surprisingly, several institutes where placements have started, including Birla Institute of Technology &amp; Science-Pilani and <keyword id="75110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="NITs">NITs</keyword>, are seeing these startups go head-to-head with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=traditional+recruiters+">traditional recruiters</a> to hire talent. At other B-schools and <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> where pre-placement offers (PPOs) have started flowing in, it is again the startups that are leading the pack. 
 
2. Much high in numbers: The numbers speak for themselves. If ShopClues is revising its hiring intake from around 100 last year to 180-250 this time, realty portal PropTiger is doubling its target to 50. Even five-month-old B2B (business-to-business) hyperlocal delivery startup ShadowFax, which raised $300,000 from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Snapdeal">Snapdeal</a>'s founders and others in August followed by a $8.5-million Series A round by Fidelity's proprietary investment arm Eight Roads Ventures barely a month later, is looking to hire from IITs, <keyword id="46923" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIMs">IIMs</keyword> and other leading management institutes for its technology, data science and operations teams. 
 
3. Tapping more institutes: In the process, these companies are reaching out to many more institutes this year. "If there is a campus that attracts bright minds of the country, we want to be there. This includes other engineering colleges as well as top colleges in economics and commerce," says Saurabh Sharma, founder &amp; chief executive officer of Indus Insights. The Big Data firm made 40 offers last year, mostly at the top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras). This year, it plans to make 100-plus, including at NITs (Trichy, Warangal, etc), SRCC, LSR, Christ College and Indian School of Business. 
 Similarly, Delhi-based mobile services marketplace UrbanClap, which hired 30 business development and operations specialists from <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> last year, is extending its reach to several new institutes, including <keyword id="6431668" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Delhi">IIT-Delhi</keyword> and IIM-Ahmedabad as it gears up to take on 80-100 this year. 
 
Salaries apart, the other drawing factors include the opportunity to work on challenging problems. "We don't have any glass ceilings. Freshers could be running entire teams within six months of joining," says Aditi Avasthi, founder and CEO, Embibe. "Students are opting for startups aggressively as some of the roles offered by them are quite challenging and inclined with their aspirations," sums up Rahul Katyal, placement manager at IIT-Bombay.

Gear up to face interviews! Engineering and business schools to witness over three-fold jump in recruitments in India

KOLKATA/MUMBAI: Where is the country’s top engineering talent heading to in a year of subdued hiring? <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL), <keyword id="43340" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Oracle">Oracle</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> topped the hiring charts for the class of 2014, according to data from the top <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> at the end of the first phase of this placement season. 
 With 271 offers, almost a 100 more than the second-largest <keyword id="41007" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="recruiter">recruiter</keyword>, Samsung is the clear winner so far. This number includes 69 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 28 postings in <keyword id="43918" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Korea">Korea</keyword>. 
 
The South Korean conglomerate has ramped up hiring numbers by as much as 71% from 158 last year, emerging as the biggest recruiter at the IITs so far. It had made 23 international offers last year. 
 
“We focused on campus hiring for multiple reasons — strengthening our core competency in embedded computing and building new skills/capabilities in UX design, enterprise software and data analysis,” said a Samsung spokesperson in a written response to ET. Out of 243 candidates selected for India, 211 are <keyword id="821920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="from-software">from software</keyword> engineering and 19 from UX design. 
 RIL, another regular recruiter, made 177 offers, lower than last year’s 202. Students have been taken on in the roles of graduate <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> trainees (GETs). 
 
“Other than some 45 PPOs, RIL has hired 132 students from 8 IITs – Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras, Kanpur and IITBHU. In addition to this, Reliance Jio hired 5 GETs, one from IIT-Hyderabad and 4 from IIT-Indore,” said a Reliance Industries spokesperson in a written response. 
 
These numbers reflect hiring at the end of the first phase of the placement season in which roughly 50-60% of the batches have been placed across IITs. The second phase will start in the first week of January and will cover the remaining students. 
 
Tech major Oracle was another big recruiter, taking on close to 135 students across almost all IITs. While its overall campus hiring numbers remained fairly consistent over the last three years, it made a few US-based offers for the first time this year. 
 
“Oracle has a number of different business groups internally and we hire students across a variety of positions. 
 Many students will join Oracle, working in product development roles across our hardware, software or industry-specific based groups,” said a <keyword id="154054" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="company-spokesperson">company spokesperson</keyword>. 
 E-commerce major Flipkart, as reported earlier by ET, has been a big draw at the IITs during the first phase of placements. The company increased hiring from around 100 last year to 118. “Campus hiring is strategic for us. It helps us identify and bring new talent,” <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, co-founder, Flipkart, told ET. 
 
“Past experience has shown us that talent from tier-I colleges like the IITs and IIMs and the way they meet the challenges posed by a high-growth environment like ours has been remarkable -- and a great fit for an organisation like Flipkart that stresses on ownership and innovation,” added Bansal. 
 
Several other companies emerged as strong recruiters, according to hiring data from six of the older IITs at Bombay, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Kanpur and Guwahati. 
 Business process outsourcing company <keyword id="369930" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="EXL-Service">EXL Service</keyword>, for instance, made 97 offers across 7 IITs this year compared to just 46 across 5 IITs last placements. The increase in the number of campus hires in the roles of consultants and analysts is to power the company’s analytics business, which has been growing at more than 30% for the last few years.
