ICICI Bank launched WhatsApp banking services amid the Coronavirus lockdown

Mumbai, Jun 22 ( ) Hyundai Motor India on Monday signed an agreement with private sector lender ICICI Bank for online retail financing of its vehicles. Hyundai Motor India Ltd ( HMIL) is the first original equipment maker to provide tailor-made online car financing options on a single platform, 'Click to Buy', the company said in a release. Under the partnership, ICICI Bank has integrated its finance solutions online with the car maker's digital sales platform, it said, adding that through the tie-up, Hyundai will enable customers to avail an end-to-end composite online solution for car buying along with the required funding to purchase their car. Hyundai's designated platform facilitates end-to-end retailing of its cars online, making a new car purchase contactless, safe, convenient and hassle free, the release said. "With Click to Buy, Hyundai has offered customers the first ever end-to-end online car buying portal that is a one stop solution to customer needs. Through our partnership with ICICI Bank, we will fortify customer purchase journey from any remote location and enable real-time transaction with the most productive finance deals," said W S Oh, Executive Director for Corporate Planning at HMIL. With this tie-up, pre-approved customers of ICICI Bank, can directly apply for a car loan through 'Click to Buy' website and procure an instant loan sanction without having to physically visit the branch, the company said. In addition to these services, ICICI Bank also offers up to 100 per cent on-road funding as well. How to withdraw cash from ATM without debit card

The number of online transactions is growing every day and banks need to have stringent <keyword id="137092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyber-security">cyber security</keyword> measures. 
 The need for broader security system increased after salary accounts of at least two dozen <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> employees were hacked last month in May. 
 
Experts and company executives said told Economic Times that the hacking highlighted broader cyber security challenges for domestic banks. 
 
At least Rs 2 lakh were siphoned off from half a dozen salary accounts of Infosys employees hacked by a still unidentified person, two people familiar with the development told the financial daily. 
 <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> refunded salaries to affected employees immediately, given its longstanding relationship with Infosys, executives told ET. 
 
An ICICI spokesperson told ET that the impacted customers got their debit cards prior to December 2013 and as per the rules at the time the cards were activated for international transactions. "However, the customers had the choice of blocking international transactions on their debit cards," the spokesperson said. 
 
Since December 2013, the spokesperson informed, the bank has been issuing EMV chip debit cards to customers who make international transactions, besides giving all customers the choice to opt for cards with this global security standard. 
 
"The bank did not issue EMV chip cards to these customers as they neither transacted internationally nor did they opt for the EMV chip cards," the spokesperson told the financial daily. 
 
"This was a case of card skimming, wherein debit card information was used by the fraudsters for conducting unauthorised transactions. Debit card information may have leaked at point of sale machine or through some other channel and this led to the incident," a top executive at ICICI Bank told ET on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Meanwhile, this episode has highlighted how current online security measures in most of the public and private sector banks are inadequate to counter new-age threats. 
 
"Incidents of skimming happen because banks continue to ask simplistic questions on customer's date of birth, address, mother's maiden name, name of spouse, etc. Such information is freely and publicly available on Facebook, LinkedIn and job search portals. So fraudsters have easy access to such information. In essence, that is leading to a number of frauds; some get reported while the others don't," Sivarama Krishnan, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, few banks like HSBC often issue fast tokens to customers where the personal identification number changes every 30 seconds depending on the frequency that the bank sets up. 
 
Customers are then required to use a one-time password sent to their phones. A number of banks have still not enabled such a system, which drastically reduces the vulnerability of security systems, experts told ET. 
 
But Infosys was not the first case. In 2013, the Axis Bank salary accounts of 15 police officers in Mumbai were hacked and money was withdrawn from those accounts through ATMs in Greece. Axis Bank later refunded the amount to the affected officers. 
 
"Customers often give the debit card/ card details to petrol pump attendant, hotel waiter or to salesperson. Such negligent behaviour causes risks," said the chief information security officer of a leading private sector bank. 
 
Experts told ET most banks need to implement Adaptive Access systems, a new-age security solution that uses tools like analytics to thwart cyber attacks. A number of banks such as HDFC, Axis Bank and Punjab National Bank have already deployed such systems.

When I was told about the ‘ICICI <keyword id="50691" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital">Digital</keyword> Village’ at <keyword id="3896834" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="akodara">Akodara</keyword> in <keyword id="48360" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sabarkantha">Sabarkantha</keyword> district of <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>, I was skeptical, because of two reasons: one, How is a ‘digital village’ possible with the lack of infrastructure? and two, when the cities are still cash economies with structured formal sectors, how can a single village be the exception? 
 
My answers were answered on a quick day trip to the village where we actually saw cashless transactions take place smoothly, similar to how things take place in the city. 
 The village was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> in January 2015 to commemorate <keyword id="233016" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Group">ICICI Group</keyword>’s 60 years in India. 
This was done to enable villagers to use technology in various aspects of life including banking, payments, education, among others. 
 
Here, Wi-Fi connectivity is available across the village where transactions as low as Rs. 10 take place on phone through SMS and the Internet. The wifi tower stands tall in the middle of the village. 
 
The objective for this was simple; to show that technology can be used to eliminate barriers that separate rural and urban India.

 First, every adult villager was encouraged to open a <keyword id="6355272" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank">bank</keyword> account to enable savings and a cashless habit. 
The Bank uses tab banking to open savings bank account which allows customers to open accounts without submitting physical documents. The accounts are being serviced by a dedicated branch and an ATM which did not have a queue when we visited it! 
 
Various cashless transactions are facilitated through Debit Cards, SMS Banking, Online Banking, Cashless Payment Processing and other modes. 
 
The villagers' accounts are also being linked to Aadhar to enable direct transfer of government benefits into savings accounts. 
 
How is it enabled?

 From enabling farmers to access the latest information on prices of agricultural commodities on <keyword id="35258" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCDEX">NCDEX</keyword> to establishing a water treatment plant to provide clean water to the villagers, all the resources were matched in level to the digital offering to create overall development.

The online penetration, defined as a share of bookings done online through websites of the service providers or through online travel agencies (OTAs), of the Indian travel industry accounted for 56-58% in FY20. The analysts further expect the share of online penetration to 67-68% in FY23, supported by growth in online transactions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Justified valuations The ICICI Direct report highlighted that taking cognisance of the huge growth opportunities for EaseMyTrip and a lean cost of operations that would aid the flow of profitability to the bottom line — “it is an attractive issue.” According to Choice Broking, the company is available at a P/E of 65.3x on FY20 numbers — “which is reasonably priced”. The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio shows the price that the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings. Higher the P/E, the more expensive the stock.
