Mumbai, Mar 31 () With many getting payment reminders, confusion prevails among borrowers, term-plan investors and credit cardholders over the implementation of the three-month moratorium on all loan repayments amid disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak. As part of measures to alleviate hardships faced by people, the Reserve Bank, on March 27, announced a slew of steps, including a three-month moratorium on loan repayments. Many borrowers, credit cardholders and mutual fund investors have received SMSes from their lenders reminding them that they need to maintain sufficient balance on the due date. Among others, such messages have been received by people who have taken personal, auto and home loans. An SBI Cards customer from the city received an SMS on Sunday asking him to pay the minimum balance for payment on the annual charge even though the person is yet to activate his credit card. On Saturday, a Navi Mumbai homemaker who has a monthly investment plan from ICICI Lombard received a message asking her to maintain the EMI amount in the bank account. On Sunday, her husband got a call from his insurance broker regarding payment towards a plan taken from HDFC Ergo. An American Express credit card customer from the city also received a payment reminder on Monday. When contacted, a public sector bank official admitted that such messages are being sent to customers as the moratorium decision has to be approved by the board of each lender but in many cases, the board meetings have not taken place due to the nationwide lockdown. According to a banker, customers would have to inform their banks that they want to avail the benefit of the moratorium. "Wherever there is a standing instruction, the customer has to inform the bank that he or she wants EMIs to be deferred. Otherwise, instalments will be deducted," a senior public sector banker said. RBI has taken a slew of measures, including a 75-basis points cut in the repo rate, in the wake of the situation arising out of the outbreak of coronavirus, which has infected more than 1,250 people and has claimed over 30 lives so far in the country. There is also a three-month moratorium on payments on all types of loans and lenders have been directed not to treat such non-payments as NPAs or make bad loan provisions for them. The regulator has asked credit information bureaux not to report non-performing assets during the moratorium period. Another senior banker told that the moratorium should not be seen as a kind of write-off. "This is not a loan write-off by the government. This is just an option to delay the payments for those customers whose jobs have been affected due to the lockdown or salaries been delayed because of the same. "Ultimately, each customer has to clear his or her dues and even the interest component of the three EMIs (Equated Monthly Installments) during the moratorium period will accrue to the principal," the banker said. New Delhi, Apr 2 () Private sector lender Axis Bank has offered its customers to opt for the loan moratorium if they face problem is keeping their EMIs running, in line with actions of its peers. "In the wake of the Reserve Bank of India's guidelines on the COVID-19 Regulatory Package, we are now offering you the flexibility to opt for a moratorium/deferment," Axis Bank said in a tweet. Customers can opt for moratorium on payment of installments and interest for various term loans/credit card dues, and/or defer the interest for working capital facilities due between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020, it said. The offer of flexibility is in line with most of its peers in the private sector such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank. "The option of deferment can be availed if your immediate cash flows are adversely impacted or you are facing financial constraints arising from Covid-19 pandemic," Axis Bank said detailing about the terms and conditions on its website. Further, the bank clarified to its customers that it is only a deferment option and not a concession or waiver, since interest would continue to accrue for this period. The repayment would resume from June 2020, once the deferment period is over. Borrowers whose cash flows are not impacted and do not wish to avail the moratorium, may choose to opt out from the moratorium by sending an email or by reaching out to any of bank branches, Axis Bank said adding, it is deemed that borrowers have opted for the moratorium if there is no written communication stating otherwise. Meanwhile, a host of state-run banks, which control over two-thirds of the system, have gone for an option where the repayments automatically get deferred unless a customer informs of her willingness to pay. Mumbai, Apr 1 () Most of the private sector lenders have decided to go for the "opt-in" option on loan repayment moratorium, putting the onus on the customer to take the initiative of informing the bank of their choice to go for the three-month breather offered by the Reserve Bank of India. Largest private sector lender HDFC Bank said it would encourage customers with adequate funds to continue repayments to avoid the extra interest charges and tenor extension of the loan. The Reserve Bank last Friday announced a three-month moratorium on loan repayments in the wake of COVID-19 crisis for dues to be paid between March-May 2020 and left it to the bank to implement the same. A slew of state-run banks, which control over two-thirds of the system, have gone for an "opt-out" option where the repayments automatically get deferred unless a customer informs of her willingness to pay. Experts have already made it clear that this is not an interest waiver, but a deferment of payments, meaning the additional interest costs will have to borne by the customers. "If you do not want the EMI (earnest monthly installments) moratorium, no further action is required from your side. We will continue to bank your repayment instructions," HDFC Bank said on its website. Kotak Mahindra Bank asked customers to write to an email ID for "opting in" for the moratorium. "The Bank would be charging the interest, at the original contracted rate, for the moratorium period on the outstanding amount of loan to all those who avail the relief as provided in the RBI circular," it said. Second largest lender ICICI Bank took a different approach, wherein it has decided to make the moratorium as "opt-in" for the loans generally availed by salaried customers, while for loans taken by micro-borrowers and traders, whose cash flow may stand to get impacted, it is "opt-out". Accordingly, joint liability group or self-help group lending, jewel lending, unsecured business loans, dealer financing, overdrafts and credit cards will be in the "opt-out" category where the borrowers will have to inform the bank if they wish to continue paying, while other term loans will be under the "opt-in" category. Mumbai, May 27 () SBI on Wednesday said it has simplified the equated monthly instalment (EMI) deferment process for eligible borrowers who want to avail moratorium on term loan repayments. It has reached out to all its eligible loan customers to obtain their consent to stop their standing instructions (SIs) / National Automated Clearing House (NACH) mandate for the EMIs falling due in June, July and August 2020, the State Bank of India (SBI) said in a statement. "For this, we have simplified the process of stopping the EMIs by initiating a SMS communication to nearly 85 lakh eligible borrowers asking about their consent to stop EMIs," the country's largest lender said. The borrowers have to reply with a 'Yes' to a designated virtual mobile number (VMN) mentioned in the SMS within five days of receiving the message, if they wish to defer the EMIs. Last week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed banks and other lending institutions to extend the moratorium on term loans till August 31, 2020. In March, RBI had announced a three-month moratorium on payment of all term loans falling due between March 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020 to help borrowers cope with the economic fallout of the COVID-19 crisis. SBI simplifies EMI moratorium process, starts notifying eligible borrowers via SMS

Users can pay their household rent using their credit cards from the CRED app. By using this, users will be able to get an interest-free credit period on rent, earn reward points on their credit cards and earn CRED coins when they pay their credit card bill on the CRED app. To use the new CRED RentPay feature, users will have to add their landlord’s bank account or UPI details into the app. This will allow users to directly transfer the rent from their credit card to the landlord’s account. CRED will charge users a transaction fee of 1% - 1.5% depending on the user’s credit card network. This means that if you are using CRED RentPay to pay ₹20,000 rent, you will have to pay ₹200 - ₹300 to CRED. CRED Stash CRED Stash has been launched as a pilot with IDFC FIRST Bank and the company has claimed that it is the only offering of its kind in India. The company has added that it will scale up with other bank partners on completion of the pilot. CRED Stash is an online instant line of credit that will allow CRED users to quickly get credit without having to go through the application and verification process. CRED users will get a pre-approved credit line of up to ₹5 lakh and users will be able to withdraw any amount within their pre-approved limit. Users will be able to select the tenure for the loan. CRED claimed that the interest charged is a third of the interest rates charged on credit cards. The pre-approved limit will depend on the user’s credit score and credit card limit. New Delhi, Mar 31 () Banks have started sensitising their branches about three months' moratorium on all term loans, including home, auto and crop loans, to help customers in overcoming financial difficulties due to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent nation-wide lockdown.Several banks on Tuesday said they have informed and provided their branches with the detailed guidelines on various schemes announced by the RBI recently and customers are being sent messages individually on their registered mobile number about the EMI payment.Union Bank of India Managing Director Rajkiran Rai G told that branches have been informed about with respect to moratorium on all term loans."In case of those who have opted for ECS route for EMI deduction, customers are given the option of availing the facility by informing the branch concerned through mail or other digital medium," he said.Banks on its own unilaterally cannot stop ECS payment due to legal issue but the customer has the option of requesting bank to stop it, Rai said.He further said the customers whose income has not been impacted are encouraged to continue payment as per the scheduled."As per COVID 19 regulatory package of RBI, Indian Bank allows a moratorium by deferring payment of EMI/ Term Loan Instalments &amp; Interest/ Interest on Working Capital for 3 months w.e.f 1st March 2020," a tweet issued by the banks said.Another public sector lender PNB said it presents relief scheme for its customers. "In view of COVID-19, it has been decided to defer payment of all installments on term loan and recovery of interest on cash credit facilities falling due between March 01,2020 and May 31 2020."Canara Bank tweeted, "In terms of Covid 19 - RBI package, borrowers are eligible for moratorium/ deferment of installments/EMI for Term loans falling due from 01.03.2020 to 31.05.2020 &amp; repayment period gets extended accordingly. SMS also has been sent to customers to avail the same." With banks clarifying their positions on EMI moratorium, it will help clear doubts of customers who were confused after getting payment reminders from lenders.Last Friday, the RBI had announced that all term loans, including retail and crop loans and working capital payments, will be covered by the three-month moratorium. Banks will now have discretion in deciding the limits on working capital, with RBI saying that no payment miss should be considered a default and reported to credit information companies."The repayment schedule for such loans as also the residual tenor, will be shifted across the board by three months after the moratorium period. Interest shall continue to accrue on the outstanding portion of the term loans during the moratorium period," the RBI said.Deferred instalments under the moratorium will include principal and/or interest components, bullet repayments, EMIs, credit card dues, it said."Lending institutions shall frame board-approved policies for providing the above mentioned reliefs to all eligible borrowers. Wherever the exposure of a lending institution to a borrower is Rs 5 crore or above as on March 1, 2020, the bank shall develop an MIS on the reliefs provided to its borrowers which shall inter alia include borrower-wise and credit-facility wise information regarding the nature and amount of relief granted," it said.Following the announcement, the banks just had one working day to finalise the details and issue instructions to branches, a senior official of another public sector bank said.As soon as finer points on implementation of moratorium came from the Reserve Bank, the official said, board approval was sought as per the direction of the central bank and necessary instructions have been issued to staff regarding their implementation.Yesterday, the Agriculture Ministry said that farmers will continue to get short-term loan of up to Rs 3 lakh at a subsidised interest rate of 7 per cent, and prompt repayers will get it at four per cent as the government extended the subsidy to banks till May 31.The decision, which are implemented through banks, comes as many farmers are not being able to go to banks for payment of their loan dues on account of restrictions imposed due to the lockdown.Besides, FAQ are expected to be issued by Indian Banks Association on the various measures announced by the Reserve Bank to the benefit of customers. In March, the central bank had allowed a three-month moratorium on payment of all term loans due between March 1, 2020, and May 31, 2020. Accordingly, the repayment schedule and all subsequent due dates, as also the tenor for such loans, were shifted across the board by three months. As a result of this moratorium, individuals' EMI repayments of loans taken were not deducted from their bank accounts, providing much-needed liquidity. New Delhi, May 26 () The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday said it has joined hands with ICICI Bank to offer retail financing schemes to its customers. As part of the tie up, ICICI Bank is offering flexi EMI scheme which enables customers to pay low EMI initially, in order to help them overcome the liquidity stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the automajor said in a statement. The EMI amount starts from Rs 899 on a loan of Rs 1 lakh for first three months. The bank is also offering similar other EMI plans for MSI customers. With Maruti Suzuki's over 3,000 outlets and ICICI Bank's extensive network of over 5,380 branches across India, the offer will definitely benefit the customers of all profiles who are willing to buy a car, it said. "While fighting the prevailing COVID-19 crisis, we also need to help customers with attractive auto retail financial solutions," MSI Executive Director (M&amp;S) Shashank Srivastava said. "Unlike the first round, banks will now be extending the moratorium selectively (1m-3m) basis to new/old customers, while good customers too will be reluctant, given the higher interest cost and some pick-up in business activity," said Emkay Global in a report prepared after talking to several bankers on the fresh announcements by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). As part of COVID-19 relief package, the RBI on Friday extended the moratorium on term loans and interest on working capital loans by three months till August 31. Also, as a relief for working capital borrowers, it allowed conversion of accumulated interest on these loans to Funded-Interest Term Loan (as typically happens under restructuring) instead of one-shot payment at the end of the moratorium, but still payable before March 31, 2021. Bankers are indicating that instead of the 3 month moratorium, forbearance on asset classification or selective restructuring (mainly for SME) would have been a better solution, with business activities resuming gradually. Longer moratoriums are acceptable for long-tenure loans like mortgage, but not for short-tenure loans, and also disrupts credit discipline even for relatively good customers in the long run, the brokerage said in its report on the basis of comments from bankers. It is now expected that that salaried class, which was relatively reluctant in the first round, may opt for a moratorium in the second round due to rising job losses/pay cuts. Moratorium behaviour from corporates was mixed in the first round, with even good rated corporates availing moratorium, but may not take the extension. Collection from micro finance segment borrowers still remains slow due to restriction in conducting centre meetings and thus, banks may selectively extend a short moratorium on need basis in specific areas, the brokerage said.

ICICI Bank's share price is expected to surge as much as 34% in the coming year — despite having more loans under moratorium than other lenders

New Delhi, Apr 1 () HDFC Bank on Wednesday offered to defer EMIs in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.The bank in an email to its customers said the prevailing situation may pose a huge challenge for people at large. "In line with the RBI guidelines and to show our solidarity, HDFC Bank is offering its customers EMI moratorium as a relief measure."You can defer your EMIs/loan installments and credit card dues up to 3 months," the bank said.The bank said its debit card holder customers can now withdraw cash from any ATM without charges till June 30."There won't be any cap on the number of withdrawals or other transactions done at the ATM including declined transactions," it said."We will also waive the minimum monthly/quarterly balance requirements for the savings and current account holders for four months - from March to June 2020. These customers will be sent a separate communication," the lender added.All the public sector lenders on Tuesday announced they will be extending the moratorium for three months, giving their customers a window to pay EMIs and interest on working capital loans by small businesses or MSMEs.These measures are part of RBI's mega liquidity booster announced on Friday as the coronavirus lockdown has crippled almost every economic activity in the country. The RBI’s stance on loan moratorium In its affidavit, the RBI told the Supreme Court that extending the moratorium beyond six months will impact overall credit discipline and have a ‘debilitating impact’ on the credit creation process. On the issue of compound interest, the RBI asserted that waiver of the same would result in ‘significant economic costs’ for banks to absorb. The larger ripple effect may lead to implications for borrowers and undermine broader financial stability. Central government’s take on loan moratorium The central government asserted that it would waive compound interest (interest on interest) during the moratorium period for MSMEs and personal loans up to ₹2 crore in its affidavit filed ahead of the last hearing. However, Senior Advocate C. Aryama Sundaram argued that the real estate sector is completely left out of the scope. The bench was also not pleased, highlighting that the central government’s affidavit did not provide the necessary details regarding the questions asked by the court earlier.
