New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): <keyword id="19953789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras" source="keywords">IIT Madras</keyword> has been ranked the <keyword id="19925221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best" source="keywords">best</keyword> <keyword id="22759867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-educational-institution" source="keywords">higher educational institution</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in an overall category in the ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories "overall and engineering" The NIRF rankings lists was released for 13 different categories, including universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

Indian government demands an action plan from IITs to improve global rankings

It will include students across fields — from dance and singing to physics and mathematics. “Talented students from the arts and science stream have been selected from around the country for the programme. It would start on October 10 in Bangalore and conclude on October 23 at IIT Delhi,” Nishank said. The programme will be conducted in the presence of Kailasavadivoo Sivan, Chairman of Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO), PM’s scientific advisor Professor K Vijayraghavan, and Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma. “This is an ambitious initiative of the Modi government. Prime Minister’s innovative learning programme 'Dhruv' to kick off tomorrow at ISRO

<ul><li>The Human Resource &amp; Development Ministry (MHRD) will launch a course in aerospace engineering. </li><li>The course will be available online from 29 July. </li><li>It will include six courses, imparting knowledge on designing, manufacturing and maintenance of spacecraft, aircraft, missiles in aerospace engineering. </li><li>In India, the annual compensation of aerospace engineers is nearly ₹867,543. </li></ul>Soon after India launched <keyword id="53289" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandrayaan-2">Chandrayaan-2</keyword>, its second mission to the moon, the Human Resource &amp; Development Ministry (MHRD) said that its ‘Swayam’ portal will offer online courses in aerospace engineering. The course will be available online from 29 July. Launched by the Indian government, Swayam provides open online courses with teaching and learning resources to its citizens. “ISRO will go ‘back to the moon’ today. Learn Aerospace Engineering with Swayam, who knows, if you are a part of the journey the next time,” the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry said in a tweet.

In the aerospace domain, IIT Bombay will also launch a three month long course on ‘Introduction to aerospace engineering/flight’ imparting the basics of aerospace engineering. ‘Vibration and structural dynamics’ course will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur. The demand for Aerospace engineers has been on the rise, globally. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the sector will create jobs at a rate of 6% by 2026. Indian government launches online aerospace engineering course for those who aspire to reach the moon

According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi rank amongst world’s top 50 engineering colleges, as per the QS rankings

<ul><li>India’s <keyword id="6386485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-human-resource-development">Ministry of Human Resource Development</keyword> (MHRD) has instituted a panel to assess the viability of reducing the government’s control over all 23 IITs.</li><li>The move is part of the government’s larger plan to reform the higher education sector and increase the global rankings of these institutions. </li><li>Earlier this year, 20 Indian Institutes of Management (<keyword id="19478" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM">IIM</keyword>) were granted more independence in choosing board members and making decisions related to course selection and hiring. </li></ul>Last week, India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) formally instituted a panel to assess the viability of reducing the government’s control over all 23 <keyword id="6386086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> (IIT), according to a <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/panel-to-study-feasibility-of-iit-autonomy-5415187/">report</a> in the Indian Express. The seven-man committee is led by M Anandkrishnan, the former chairman of IIT-Kanpur, and comprises the directors of 5 top IITs - Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur. The move is part of the government’s larger plan to reform the higher education sector and increase the global rankings of these institutions. It will have significant implications for the operation of IITs, which are currently regulated by the government’s IIT Council. The state-backed engineering institutes are globally renowned and routinely feature in lists of India’s best colleges. Earlier this month, QS released <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/rankings-by-location/india/2019">its rankings </a>for India’s top universities in 2019. IIT-Bombay came first in the nation, while five other IITs rounded up the top 10 spots. The panel will primarily focus on changes to the IIT Act. This will likely involve amendments to the selection process for the governing boards of IITs. Each IIT comprises a nine-member Board of Governors, all of whom are appointed by the central government. It could also involve the devolution of more powers to governing boards. For example, they could be allowed a greater say in amending the fundamental rules that relate to the day-to-day operations of IITs. The possibility of giving greater autonomy to state-backed institutes has precedence. In August 2018, the possibility of giving both IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi greater autonomy <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/hiring-courses-fees-delhi-mumbai-iits-set-to-get-freedom-to-decide-on-these-5309095/">was mooted</a> after the institutes were granted an “Institute of Eminence” designation. The designation grants institutes the power to decide on curriculum and fee structures. Furthermore, earlier this year, 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) — the graduate business equivalent of IITs - were granted <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/autonomy-on-the-way-as-iim-rules-finalised/articleshow/65380632.cms">more independence</a>. Under the amendments to the IIM Act, the 15-member governing board of these institutes will now comprise <a href="http://mhrd.gov.in/sites/upload_files/mhrd/files/IIMBill2017English.pdf">five alumni</a> and they will also be allowed to appoint their own chairmen. This will translate into the ability to select courses and hire faculty with greater ease. This could be the case for IITs as well. A reduction in the number of government appointees could bring about a diversity in opinion, not to mention less politically-motivated decision-making. Before submitting its report, the seven-member IIT panel will reportedly seek feedback from the heads of IIMs to assess the pros and cons of being given greater decision-making power. The panel is expected to submit its final recommendations to the MHRD by the end of the year.

Saudi Arabia’s growth came despite it being a new entrant in the rankings after it gained the status of ‘secondary emerging’ last year. India also falls in the category of secondary emerging economies. The Emerging Economies University Rankings features institutions from countries categorised as ‘advanced emerging,’ ‘secondary emerging’ or ‘frontier’ by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE group, which manages the indices of shares. The rankings are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. IITs, IISc and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham among the 11 universities in THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020

It's not just the common man, but even the IITs are bearing the brunt of Modi’s <keyword id="3315394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetisation">demonetisation</keyword> move. According to sources, the cash crunch has affected the maintenance work on the campuses. 
 
There are 23 IITs in the country. A number of them incur an expenditure of over Rs 1 lakh every day while the government has fixed the weekly withdrawal limit at Rs 50,000. 
 
These premier institutes claim they are conducting conferences and workshops on a daily basis which are attended by thousands of students and faculty members. These are fixed in advance and they are likely to get affected due to the restriction on cash withdrawal. 
 For this reason, several IITs including <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> have approached the <keyword id="51613" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hrd-ministry">HRD ministry</keyword> seeking relaxation from the cash withdrawal limit norm stating that they have to spend a substantial amount on maintenance of their huge campuses on a daily basis, and they are not being able to do so. 
 “We are a community of 20,000 people on campus. There are 40 academic units at <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Kharagpur. The institute needs close to Rs 2 lakh in cash to carry out various functions. We are not used to operating completely in a cashless manner. Till we make that transition, we have requested the ministry to relax the withdrawal embargo,” an official of IIT Kharagpur told Indian Express. 
 The IITs have also urged the HRD ministry to take up the issue with the <keyword id="47209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry">finance ministry</keyword>. 
 
Sources said that the HRD Ministry may soon write to the Finance Ministry to communicate the difficulties being faced by universities and institutes and their need for more cash to carry out their administrative functions.

The Human Resource &amp; Development (HRD) Ministry had granted the ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-indian-government-may-shortlist-14-more-educational-institutes-for-eminence-tag/articleshow/66991082.cms">eminence</a>’ status to the Jio Institute even before it went operational. The institute however has been under the heat since it was the only proposed institute to be accorded this status back in 2018. This status was reportedly given solely on the basis of future prospects. The institute is expected to hire university staff and prepare an academic curriculum by October 2020, ET reported citing the company’s response to the government’s EEC. The Jio institute is eyeing global academic experts to be a part of its faculty. It is in talks with <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/jio-institute-faces-ire-of-expert-panel-for-failing-to-meet-deadlines/articleshow/69153915.cms">universities</a> like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Northwestern University and Nanyang Technological University to bring in faculty experts and mentors to the institute.
