"We are a real family, and to us he was daddy," Lewis' daughter, Gale Rathbone, said in the opening clip in the commercial, which has since been uploaded to the family lawyer's YouTube page. Two of Lewis' other daughters from his first marriage also appeared in the advertisement. "I'm Anne, Don's former assistant. In an email sent to Insider, Baskin defended her sanctuary, spoke about her volunteers, and explained what it takes to work at Big Cat Rescue.<h2>Speaking to Insider, Carole Baskin said that some people — namely Big Cat Rescue donors — support her choice to work with unpaid volunteers</h2>"In most sanctuaries and zoos, the biggest expense is salaries," Baskin told Insider over email. "Big Cat Rescue donors love that none of their donations have ever gone to salaries or administration costs of the sanctuary because all of our animal care is done by 80 to 110 highly-trained volunteers and interns." Of course, Baskin does work with some paid staff members. Up until recently, the animal activist said she employed 20 people at Big Cat Rescue. However, that number changed when the coronavirus pandemic struck and halted guided tours of the sanctuary, which previously provided Big Cat Rescue with one third of its revenue."The 20 paid administration staff were paid from tour revenue and gift shop sales," Baskin said. "But when COVID-19 and the fallout from the mischaracterization in 'Tiger King' hit, we had to lay off half of those paid staff."Additionally, <a href="https://www.insider.com/carole-baskin-big-cat-rescue-pandemic-2020-6">Baskin said she and her husband Howard are not taking paychecks</a> for the time being as a result of the pandemic. Carnivore ecologist <a href="https://twitter.com/sciencewithtyus">Tyus Williams</a>, for example, told Stone that free <keyword id="26386" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="volunteer">volunteer</keyword> work can discourage those without financial freedom to help. <a href="https://twitter.com/zookeeperjake">Jake Belair</a>, an animal keeper at the Nashville Zoo, said animals "deserve expert care, not free care." Baskin, however, sees things differently. "Sometimes we are criticized by those in the exotic-animal 'industry' for relying on volunteers for animal care, and the reason is two fold," she said. "First, people want to get paid to work with wild animals, so when Big Cat Rescue shows that it can be done to the very highest standards with volunteers, it threatens their dream jobs."The animal activist also said that many people assume those who work for free are unskilled, which she feels can not "be further from the truth." According to Baskin, those who wish to volunteer at Big Cat Rescue must first pass 50 courses from <a href="https://zoocollege.com/">Zoo College</a>, an online school. From there, they're required to "observe expert keepers doing a task six times," and then later "be observed by an expert keeper while they perform the task six times.""So just to complete one task of looking for and finding cat poop, the new volunteers will have had 12 days of training here before they can look for poop by themselves," Baskin said.As explained in the second episode of "Tiger King," Big Cat Rescue's unpaid volunteers can do different jobs depending on their experience and time spent at the sanctuary. The hours worked by volunteers are more flexible than those of interns, who receive housing, a stipend, and work approximately <a href="https://bigcatrescue.org/get-involved/volunteer/intern/">50 hours per week for 12 weeks</a>, according to the Big Cat Rescue website."Another layer of accountability is our time requirement," Baskin continued. "People must put in between four and 32 hours per week, depending on their level of proficiency and training, or they cannot remain in the program. We use a shirt-color system so we can tell at a distance the level of training a volunteer has, so we know if they are allowed to be near certain cats.""No one who has actually trained here as a volunteer or intern would ever say they weren't thoroughly trained and managed," the activist said. "At many zoos, a person can be hired to care for big cats and within a week, with no formal training in caring for big cats, have the keys to the cages. <a href="https://www.theledger.com/article/LK/20060824/news/608147669/LL">Enshala the tiger</a>, who was accidentally set free and then shot to death at the Lowry Park Zoo, was just one sad example.""At Big Cat Rescue, a person works with the smaller cats, like 25-pound bobcats to 40-pound lynx, for two years before they can ever even be within three feet of the outside of a big cat's cage, and they never get the keys," she continued.And that's where Big Cat Rescue's volunteer and intern programs differ from those of other sanctuaries, according to Baskin."Interns put in more hours, but we provide them with housing and a food stipend, whereas many other facilities charge thousands of dollars for people to come play around at animal care for a week or two," Baskin said. "Most of those places offer hands-on play time and are really just exploitative money-making schemes operating under the guise of conservation."<h2>Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Big Cat Rescue has found ways to continue most of its usual operations</h2>Florida, where Big Cat Rescue is located, has been majorly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. At the time of writing, more than 62,000 residents have become infected, and another 2,700 have died after becoming sick, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/cases-in-us.html">according to the Centers for Disease Control</a>. As a result, <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/04/01/825383186/florida-governor-orders-statewide-lockdown">Governor Ron DeSantis ordered a statewide lockdown</a> at the beginning of April.Luckily for Big Cat Rescue, however, the sanctuary has not had to limit the number of staff onsite to care for its animals."Our number of volunteers has stayed steady," Baskin previously told Insider. "Even though we typically have 80 to 110 volunteers, each one is only required to put in between four and 32 hours per week, so we have never had an issue of too many people at a time." Those workers do, however, have to follow strict guidelines to ensure their safety, and that of the cats they're caring for."We have always been fanatical about cleanliness and prevention of transmission of disease by wearing gloves while preparing food and cleaning," Baskin said. "We have added wearing face masks when preparing the cat's food and when we are in close proximity to them."<h2>Still, Baskin said <a href="https://www.insider.com/carole-baskin-says-big-cat-rescue-might-not-open-again-2020-6">it's unlikely that Big Cat Rescue will open to the public again</a> in the future, both as a result of the pandemic and backlash from 'Tiger King'</h2>"If we were going to open to the public, we would require masks, temperature scans, and some sort of accounting for where they were before coming here," Baskin said. More than 50 feline species live on-site, and are cared for by Baskin, her husband Howard, staff members, and approximately 80 to 110 volunteers. Typically, the sanctuary is open to visitors throughout the year.During the pandemic, however, guided tours were temporarily halted to maintain the safety of its big cats, volunteers, and employees."About one third of our revenue is from guided tours of the sanctuary," Baskin told Insider over email. "Losing that meant we had to let go 10 of our 20 staff, and my husband and I are not taking paychecks."Still, Big Cat Rescue is working on various methods to spread its message and advocacy online. "We are trying out new ways of bringing virtual tours to our supporters," she said. "We have always done Facebook Live broadcasts each day, but now we are trying to bring more consistent content like Feeding Tours LIVE, Keeper Tours LIVE, Singing Sundays, Cats for Kids on Saturdays, etc.""We have an educational app coming out called Big Cat Rescue VR for Oculus, and have some teachers working on class materials we can offer teachers and home schoolers to go along with that content," she continued.<h2>Despite her sanctuary's lost revenue, Baskin says the coronavirus makes it too risky to open Big Cat Rescue again</h2>In recent weeks, zoos and other animal attractions around the country have started to reopen, welcoming large crowds on their opening days. For example, Oklahoma's Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park — which was formerly owned by Exotic and seen throughout "Tiger King" — <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiger-king-zoo-reopened-visitors-social-distancing-2020-5">was reportedly crowded on its opening day</a>, with many visitors not wearing masks. Baskin said that while she would implement measures to prevent something similar from happening at Big Cat Rescue, she's not sure she'd be willing to open to the public while the pandemic is still a threat."If we were going to open to the public, we would require masks, temperature scans, and some sort of accounting for where they were before coming here," Baskin said. "Even then, I don't know that I would feel safe exposing our volunteers or cats to this invisible killer."<h2 dir="ltr">It's not just the pandemic that has Baskin worried about strangers entering her sanctuary</h2>In addition to the virus, Baskin is also worried about fans of Exotic, who she fears might cause harm to her cats in response to their ongoing feud.As of Monday, an Oklahoma judge ruled that <a href="https://www.insider.com/carole-baskin-gains-control-of-joe-exotic-former-zoo-2020-6">Baskin is now in control of Exotic's old zoo, the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park</a>, which was most recently formally under Jeff Lowe's ownership. She will not receive any of the park's animals, but told Insider that Big Cat Rescue will "stand ready to assist" should the need arise; Lowe has 120 days to vacate the zoo's premises, according to the ruling."I think we have already found our new normal," Baskin told Insider. "I have no delusions that we would ever be able to open to the public again. Even if COVID-19 is under control by the end of next year — and I think it will be at least that long — I don't know if I would ever take the risk of allowing one deranged person from the #FreeJoeExotic clan to gain access.""Even though our tours are guided and have a backup person to keep the group of 20 or less together, it would be just too easy for a pair or group to work together to distract our volunteers long enough to throw some poisoned treat into a cage for a cat to consume," she continued. "It's just not worth the risk."<div type="image" title="Joe Exotic" height="1893" width="2524" msid="76181104" hostid="261"></div><h2>According to Baskin, there's 'not enough space in this article for everything that "Tiger King" got wrong'</h2>She previously tried to film a video about the topic that ended up being over two hours long (it's now available to watch <a href="https://bigcatrescue.org/netflix/">on Big Cat Rescue's website</a>), and says the series could negatively affect Big Cat Rescue in the future."We were grossly mischaracterized in 'Tiger King,' and while that didn't affect our current donors who know that Big Cat Rescue is one of the most highly acclaimed sanctuaries in the world and has a perfect <a href="https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&amp;orgid=88048804">100% score with Charity Navigator</a>, I do fear that it will be much harder to attract new donors who don't already know us," Baskin said."Some sanctuaries choose not to be open to the public at all, but I always felt it was important to be that transparent to donors," she added. "They could see every corner of what we do here and know it was all good. If we cannot open to the public again due to the crazy people who have been inspired by 'Tiger King' to want to kill our animals and hurt our people, then I think it will be difficult for donors to really know what happens here from their own physical presence."Representatives for Netflix, and "Tiger King" directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, did not respond to Insider's requests for comment by the time of publication.In <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiger-king-truth-carole-baskin-big-cat-rescue-2020-4">an Insider piece about how Baskin and Big Cat Rescue were depicted in "Tiger King,"</a> Maddie Stone argued that the shots of the sanctuary's animal enclosures were misleading, and "look appallingly small in the few glimpses we get."<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/valerie-taylor-8b44b846/">Valerie Taylor</a>, the executive director of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries — which conducted an audit of Big Cat Rescue in 2019 — told Stone "these enclosures are for small cats, such as bobcats and servals."As Stone's article points out, in reality, <a href="https://bigcatrescue.org/refuting-netflix-tiger-king/">most of the sanctuary's habitats are larger than 1,200 square feet</a>, and <a href="https://bigcatrescue.org/cams/">live webcams</a> show that the cats have access to "shaded areas with trees, open-air play yards, and a lake."Citing Taylor, who said big-cat enclosures were more spacious than the enclosures shown in "Tiger King," Stone noted that "the largest is over two acres, far exceeding the GFAS's <a href="https://www.sanctuaryfederation.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/FelidStandards-Dec-2019.pdf">minimum requirements</a>."<div type="image" title="carole baskin" height="703" width="938" msid="76181107" hostid="261"></div>Baskin said some viewers of "Tiger King" often misunderstand her sanctuary's purpose."After 'Tiger King,' I can tell you the things I hear most from people are that we should breed big cats to save them from extinction and turn them all loose in the wild where they belong," Baskin said.Baskin noted that "those ideas contradict each other," and adds that it seems "the vast majority of the hate mail" she receives at the sanctuary "is because we oppose breeding endangered species in captivity AND because we don't turn all the cats we rescue loose.""It tells me we have a lot of educating to do because a huge percentage of the public doesn't know that there are no captive breeding programs for big cats that could ever result in them repopulating the wild, because it's illegal to turn a captive-bred wild cat loose," she added.The biggest difference between Big Cat Rescue and zoos, however, is their philosophy, according to Baskin."Our belief is that no wild cat should be born for life in a cage," she said. "We believe that people will never save habitat as long as they can get their 'big cat fix' at a zoo. While Schultz stressed that customers who did legally bring guns into stores wouldn't be kicked out, the comments <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gun-owners-want-firearms-at-starbucks-2013-9">offended a lot of people</a>. 
We asked two Starbucks competitors, <keyword id="6378093" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="McDonalds">McDonald's</keyword> and <keyword id="6691703" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dunkin-Donuts">Dunkin' Donuts</keyword>, if they had gun policies for their thousands of restaurants.
Both companies said they simply abide by the laws of that state or region. 
Here's a statement from McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb:
"We recognize that there is a lot of emotion and passion surrounding the issue of firearms and open carry weapons laws. 
While we respect the differing views of all our customers, McDonald's company-owned restaurants follow local, state and federal laws as it relates to open carry weapons in our restaurants. 
For franchisee-owned restaurants, operational decisions regarding open carry weapon laws are made by the independent franchisee.
That said, as with all aspects of operating a McDonald's restaurant, we expect our franchisees and their crew to follow local, state and federal laws."
And Dunkin' Donuts spokeswoman Michelle King: 
 "Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins restaurants are owned and operated by individual franchisees who are required to follow all federal, state and local laws with regard to firearms."

Here's What McDonald's And Dunkin' Donuts Had To Say About Customers Bringing Guns Into Their Stores

The U.S. men's national team took on Belgium on Tuesday in the World Cup's round of 16, and unless you've somehow been cut off from all forms of communication, you know the U.S. suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in extra time.
Twitter exploded after the match (the entire match drew in 9.1 million tweets <a href="https://twitter.com/TwitterData/status/484116816420036609">according to Twitter</a>), either with praise for superhero goalie Tim Howard or sadness that the team had lost.
