According to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/havoc-on-mobile-indian-internet-companies-grappling-with-fake-app-installations/articleshow/64023177.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">reports</a>, the offer of cashback or other added benefits entices users to install and uninstall an app multiple times from different devices and IP addresses. Paytm, India’s biggest mobile payments company revealed that 20% of the Paytm app downloads are fake. Their definition of fake includes users installing and deleting the app without spending any significant amount of time interacting with it. This results in no returns for the company on cost of acquisition for users to install the app. In fact, mobile fraud has increased to such an extent that it’s proving to be an obstacle for Indian Internet companies. Despite increasing traffic on their platforms, they require more growth if they’re to survive in the competitive digital space. Even by global standards, India has 1.7 times higher <a href="https://www.tune.com/blog/mobile-ad-fraud-in-india-2-4x-higher-than-the-global-average/" data-type="tilCustomLink">instances</a> of fraud related to mobile app installations, than the world average. 17% of the total app installations in the country are fake. Not only is that high, it’s the <a href="https://mkt.tune.com/tmc-global-app-install-fraud-report.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">highest</a> in the world. Sanjay Trisal, country manager of India at AppsFlyer, a mobile analytics firm, told the Economic Times, “India is the number 1 country in terms of organic and inorganic app installs but we have seen an 85% increase in fraudulent installs of apps in the last one year.” He also thinks that the sheer amount of people online in India might have something to do with it, “While the incentive for fraud in terms of parameters such as money made per click is much higher in other markets, India is an attractive country for fraudsters due to the sheer volume of installs.”

Recently, Paytm, Jabong and Hotstar have partnered with mobile companies like Samsung, Microsoft, Panasonic, Micromax, Karbonn and the like to pre-embed their mobile apps on outgoing smartphones. 
 
Shankar Nath, Senior Vice President at Paytm answers your questions about such pre-bundled apps: 
 
Why would my smartphone now come pre-installed with such apps? 
 
Manufacturers are doing this to add value to their products. The move will only help facilitate India’s massive movement to apps in terms of people transacting online. 
 
When can we expect Paytm enabled smartphones? 
 
Few models from Micromax, Intex, Lava and Karbonn are already in the market. Lumia models would have it sometime later. It’s an ongoing process. 
 
Do you feel jittery that this might put off a lot of non-Paytm budget smartphone users? 
 
As technology has advanced, processing power has kept going up, and smartphone costs have kept going down. Most of these apps are very light and most people will find it useful. Otherwise, one can always uninstall. 
 
What kind of sales hike are you expecting? 
 
The app will certainly allow us to reach a wider user base. 3/4th or nearly 80% out of the total million transactions a day we process is through a mobile. 
 
Any plans to go mobile only, like Myntra? 
 
None as of now. We get a significant amount of business through our app. So it’s a crucial part of our overall distribution and marketing efforts. However, we’d like to have all channels available.

Paytm answers your questions on
pre-bundled mobile apps

Soon you will not have to download Paytm, Hotstar and Jabong as mobile applications of these companies will come pre-embedded in smartphones. 
 In a bid to tap larger customer base of handset makers, Paytm, Jabong and Hotstar have inked deals with handset manufacturers like <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, Intex, Spice, Microsoft and Karbonn and will come embedded in these. 
 
"Up to 75-80% of our sales come through either our smartphone apps or mobile phones. So, mobile strategy is a vital element of marketing for us, especially android platform," Shankar Nath, Senior Vice-President of Paytm told Economic Times. 
 Paytm has a partnership with <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, Microsoft, Micromax, Lava and Spice for pre-embedding its app on the highest selling models of these handset manufacturers. 
 
The financial daily reported that Paytm app had seen close to 29 million downloads. 
 
Likewise, Jabong has inked deal with Microsoft to pre-bundle its app in some models of the Lumia series. The partnership will help the e-Commerce company reach out to Lumia loyals. 
 
"When an app is already installed on a smartphone, the probability of the consumer using it increases and hence, such tie-ups make sense for us," Praveen Sinha, co-founder of Jabong, told ET. 
 
As per a study by Zinnov, Jabong's transactions through smartphones have increased to up to 50% from 5% about two years ago. As smartphone sales grow about 51% every three months, the mobile commerce market is likely to grow 55% to $19 billion by 2019, from $2 billion now. 
 
"Media consumption pattern of consumers have changed completely. It will continue to change rapidly in the coming future. We are moving towards the era of wireless communications. So this is the new way towards which marketing and advertising is moving," Sandeep Goyal, chairman of Mogae Media, told ET. 
 
Goyal said that the brands were looking towards digital marketing strategies more seriously. 
 
Even Hotstar, the mobile-based application of Star network, has a tie-up with Micromax, Panasonic, Karbonn, Lava and Spice to pre-embed its app on some of their leading models. 
 
The mobile app offers over 35,000 hours of content in seven languages, ranging from movies and television shows to live sports.

Now Paytm, Jabong to come embedded in popular smartphones

<ul><li>Google will be probed by India’s antitrust regulator for alleged use of dominance for its own payments app – <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword>. </li><li>For the investigation, the CCI has directed the Director General to conduct the probe and submit the report within 60 days of the order.</li><li>The investigation will look into two things - Google’s exclusive use of Google Pay (GPay) for payments in the Play Store for buying apps or other in-app purchases (IAPs) as well as the pre-installation and prominence of Google Pay on Android smartphones.</li></ul>Google will now be probed by the Competition Commission of India for alleged use of dominance for its own payments app – Google Pay. The action is being taken on an anonymous complaint from February. According to the CCI order, there were six allegations made in the complaint against Google, out of which four have been rejected by the CCI and two aspects will be investigated – Google’s exclusive use of its payments app Google Pay (GPay) for transactions in the Play Store for buying apps or other in-app purchases as well as the pre-installation and prominence of Google Pay on Android smartphones. For the investigation, the CCI has directed the Director General to conduct the probe and submit the report within 60 days of the order. Google Pay today holds almost 40% market share in the UPI transactions, coming second to PhonePe only recently. Google is pitted against very angry peers like Paytm Google has been under fire in India after it said it was rolling out new payment policies where developers would have to pay a 30% tax on all in-app purchases and even included entertainment, education, dating, and fitness apps in the list. However, the decision was postponed after an uproar by Indian developers. Google has denied the charge misusing Google Play to push its own app. It has insisted that it is not the only app distribution option on Android phones. “Users choose Google Play because we ensure a safe, secure, and seamless experience. Play's billing system is a fundamental part of meeting this user expectation and helps ensure our continued investment in the many important things needed to make developers successful,” said the spokesperson. The tech giant had also picked a fight with Paytm which began with Paytm being removed for a few hours from the Play Store. Google had said that Paytm violated rules regarding fantasy gaming promotions. “We are confident that the CCI will find that GPay operates in an extremely competitive environment, and owes its success to its ability to offer consumers a simple and secure payments experience,” the Google spokesperson said. Pressure is piling up on Google The probe on Google Pay comes just days after it has a new competition in the market – WhatsApp Pay. Facebook’s WhatsApp Pay has received the approval to roll its UPI payments with a limitation of 20 million users. Meanwhile, Google Pay and PhonePe both of which are market leaders for UPI transactions will see a cap of 30% of the total transactions. However, this cap will be applicable from 2022. Paytm makes it easier to pay credit card bills – here are five reasons why you should be using it

<ul><li>On Friday, <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> was banned from the Google Play Store for over seven hours. </li><li>While Google released a statement it doesn’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting, Paytm had another story to tell.</li><li>By the end of the day, Paytm was back on the app store, however questions regarding the short ban on Paytm continued. </li></ul>On Friday afternoon, Paytm’s <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> and his thousands of employees were in for a rude shock – Paytm was banned from the Google Play Store, a day before the Indian Premier League is scheduled to start. By the end of the day, Paytm was back on the app store, however questions regarding the short ban on Paytm continued. Google released a statement it doesn’t allow online casinos or support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. “This includes if an app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes, it is a violation of our policies,” said the company’s statement. However, Paytm had a different story to tell. Paytm said that its recently launched mode of gamification where after every transaction you get a scratch card with a cricket sticker (a player's image and name), was the reason for the ban. “If a user collects five stickers then you would get a cashback, it’s as simple as that. Out of the blue and for reasons best known to Google, they considered it gambling. Whereas, their own payment app runs a similar promotion where you get scratch cards and then get money from that. We are a bit surprised because of that,” a Paytm spokesperson told Business Insider. While Google in its statement said that when an app violates the policies, they notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance. “And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts,” it said. However, Paytm said that it was only today that it was notified regarding the scratch card ‘violation’. Earlier in the beginning of September, there was a different violation regarding Paytm First Games. “Today you can go and advertise about a fantasy gaming app on any other app but Google says that you can’t promote your own sister app. This meant that Paytm can promote any other app but not our own fantasy gaming app. This is drawing on the lines of anti-competitiveness. Today’s violation was absolutely Google’s single-minded understanding of what the game is. They clubbed it both under the same ‘policies’ violation whereas they are two different things,” said the spokesperson. ‘Google’s policies have to adhere to the law of the land’ Interestingly, Paytm First Games continues to exist in the Apple App Store, where it was launched a month ago. Google and Apple have different approaches towards fantasy gaming. While Google takes strict action against any game that is related to betting online, Apple doesn’t seem to have any qualms about that. In fact, Google allows fantasy gaming apps on the Play Store in the US. “Apple is a bit more liberal in their policies and hence more supportive of app ecosystems specifically when it comes to real money gaming. While Google allows fantasy gaming apps to be listed on the playstore in the US, what we are trying to ask is why an inferior treatment for apps in India,” said the Paytm spokesperson. If a simple scratch card can be read as gambling and of the larger apps out there Paytm can be banned, I’m actually worried about what happens to the smaller apps,” said the spokesperson. Business Insider reached out to Google for its response on specific charges made by Paytm but the spokesperson said that the tech giant has nothing more to add to its earlier statement.
