Mumbai, Dec 24 () The country's second largest two-wheeler maker Honda Motorcycle on Tuesday said its BS-VI versions of Activa scooter and a brand new bike SP 125 have cumulatively sold over 60,000 units.
While the BS-VI model of Activa was launched in September and is available widely across the country, the brand new bike SP 125 was launched on November 20, Honda Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India said.
It can be noted that beginning April 1, only BS-VI models will be sold as the country pushes to cut carbon emissions from automobiles.
From the new fiscal, all the fuels sold in the country will also be of low in carbon and sulphur as the government decided to skip BS-V and jump straight from BS-IV emission norms.
Accordingly, almost all auto companies have announced commencement of production of BS-VI models from next month and reducing output of the existing versions.
While the price tag for the new Activa -- the world's largest selling scooter -- starts from Rs 67,490, which is 10-13 per cent higher over the previous model, the new bike SP 125 is priced at Rs 72,000.
The new motorbike SP125 is powered by 19 new patents and delivers 16 per cent more mileage and also offers an industry first six-year warranty, the company said.
Commenting on the traction it has received despite steep spike in prices due to changes in technology, Honda's senior vice-president for sales &amp; marketing Yadvinder Singh Guleria said their new technology deployed in the first two BS-VI models comes with many patents like enhanced smart power (eSP) and ACG starter motor.
The new models come with many advanced features like significant increase in mileage, and an industry beating six-year warranty, Guleria noted.
"Crossing 60,000 units landmark a quarter before the deadline is a testimony of the confidence of customers on our new models," he said.
The new Honda engine is acclaimed for its enhanced smart power (eSP) technology, which integrates Honda's patented ACG starter motor (quick, silent, jolt-free start every time) with programmed fuel injection and reduced frictional losses, the two-wheeler maker said.
The new Activa 125 sports 26 new patents, and promises 13 per cent more mileage, an idling stop system, additional storage and special 6-year warranty package, it added. BEN BAL

Indians increasing passion for superbikes is making two-wheeler manufacturers introduce more super bikes customized to Indian road conditions and affordability. As per a news report by The Economic Times, superbike makers are working out plans to localise production so as to cut down their prices. 
 
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, sales of bikes with engine capacity of 500cc and above jumped nearly threefold to 9,130 units in the year ended on March 31, 2015 from 3,424 in the previous year. 
 While market leaders like American Harley-Davidson and British classic bike maker <keyword id="52525" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Triumph">Triumph</keyword>, as well as Japanese Kawasaki, are already assembling several of their models at their Indian factories, others like <keyword id="72707" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Motor">Honda Motor</keyword> and Suzuki Motorcycle, who sell a sizeable number of superbikes in India, are also working on plans to assemble highend bikes here, reads the ET news report. 
 India levies a lower rate of tax on locally assembled vehicles compared to those imported as fully-built units. Luxury cars such as <keyword id="1466848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mercedes-Benz-S-Class">Mercedes-Benz S-Class</keyword> became cheaper by as much as Rs 30 lakh when its German manufacturer started assembling them in India. Recently, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>' British unit Jaguar <keyword id="44719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Land-Rover">Land Rover</keyword> started assembling its Range Rover Evoque in India, which helped it cut the vehicle's price by about Rs 20 lakh to Rs 48.73 lakh. 
 "Customer needs in India are evolving. We are all set to grab the opportunity with our new product line-up," Keita Muramatsu, president and CEO of <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India told the ET. The bike, "our biggest 'made in India' motorcycle", will also be exported from here, he said. Suzuki's Hayabusa, which is currently sold at Rs 15.95 lakh in Delhi before local levies and <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword>, would be assembled at the company's Manesar plant in Haryana.

This is good news for the <keyword id="6356076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-economy">Indian economy</keyword>, which will surely get a boost from high-end bikes and scooters production within India. <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Motorcycles and <keyword id="173465" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Scooters-India">Scooters India</keyword> (<keyword id="121221" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="HMSI">HMSI</keyword>) announced yesterday that they are setting up Rs 1,100 Crore manufacturing plant in Gujarat, which will majorly be responsible to produce scooters. With this HMSI will also start producing top of the line motorbikes in India starting with the CBR 650 sports bike. 
 The production of these motor bikes should start in 2015. "We announce that (from) next year Honda will start making CBR -650 in India. By this, we will not only open up the skill of our existing manpower but it will also showcase the <keyword id="109276" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Honda-India">Honda India</keyword>'s manufacturing quality to the world," Said HMSI Vice-President Y S Guleria. 
 However, it is still unclear that the same Gujarat plant will start producing the high-end bikes as well. Honda might be looking for another place to setup shop to for superbike production in India. This means that they will <keyword id="47916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="invest">invest</keyword> more money in the country, which will churn more job opportunities. 
 
HMSI already has plants in Rajasthan, Haryana and Karnataka and with the Gujarat plant coming to effect in 2015 they will have a greater hold in the two wheeler market. 
 
It is said that the new plant in Gujarat will have over 3,000 employees and will be the largest scooter manufacturing unit in the world. For a country like India where scooters are a common mode of transportation, this is very good news. As Honda can now probably give its scooter offerings at a very attractive rates to its customers.

New Delhi, Mar 8 () Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) plans to locally produce some of its imported premium bikes from the next fiscal to make such products more affordable and thereby garner volumes, according to a top company official. The company, which sells only CB300R bike in the middle-weight category right now, plans to bring in more models in the up to 500-cc segment as part of plans to scale up its premium bike business in the country. The two-wheeler major is also looking to have a separate exclusive sales network for the premium bikes as its looks to establish the business as a sustainable standalone vertical going ahead. "If we want to have sustainable expansion of this business, it is very important that we need to have a good range of products, not only from the branding point of view but there have to be certain key models which are going to bring in volumes in the future," HMSI Senior Vice President (Sales and Marketing) Yadvinder Singh Guleria told . The company has identified the middle-weight category bike segment (up to 500 cc engines) to do well in the country going ahead, he added. "So this is one area where we are looking at the expansion of the product range," he added. The company currently has only one premium model below the 500 cc mark -- the 350-cc CB 300 R, which was launched last year and has done well in terms of sales. Guleria said the company will also start mass production of some of the existing premium bikes, including one product below 500 cc, from next fiscal in the country to make the products more affordable. Currently, the company does not have mass production of any of its seven premium products in the country. It brings four models -- Gold Wing, CBR 1000 RR, CBR Fireblade and Forza 300 -- as completely built up units (CBUs), and three models -- CB 300 R, CBR 650 R and Africa Twin -- as completely knocked down units (CKDs). "So it will be a mix of CBU, CKD assembly and the mass production and this is going to be our game plan for moving ahead in terms the product lineup, enhancing the affordability of products in mind and scalability of the business in the future," Guleria said. He added the mass production initiative would kick-start in the next financial year itself within the company's existing facilities. Asked if the company has set some sales target from the premium segment, Guleria said, "We have prepared a long roadmap. It will be too early to say what percentage we want..but definitely we want that it should be sustainable and scalable on its own rather then depending upon the main business in times to come." On sales network, he said insights from Honda's global experience showed that it is always better to take care of premium product customers through a separate network. "So that was the reason why we wanted to move ahead for this business in a totally separate vertical in the company," Guleria added. Elaborating further, he said, "Currently, we have one Big Wing dealership and 22 shop-in-shops, but slowly these 22 shop-in-shops will transition to exclusive stores. By the end of this year, we will not have this concept of shop-in-shops." MSS ABMABM

A Delhi-based Hero dealer, on the condition of anonymity, told ET that The 110 cc Duet is going to be pitted against Honda's Activa," Meanwhile, a Hero MotoCorp representative said, "We do not comment on speculation. We have already discussed our plans to bring new scooters as well as motorcycles this year. However, we will share specific details closer to the launch dates."

Honda Activa has a new competitor from rival Hero MotoCorp

New Delhi, Feb 27 () Honda Motorcycle &amp; Scooter India (HMIS) on Thursday launched BS-VI compliant version of its Unicorn bike model with price starting at Rs 93,593 (ex-showroom, Delhi).The Unicorn BS-VI is powered by a 160cc engine providing greater performance and superior efficiency, HMSI said in a statement."Unicorn was the first motorcycle introduced by Honda in India. Since its launch, it has always been the benchmark when it comes to engine refinement and smooth performance," HMSI President, CEO &amp; Managing Director Minoru Kato said. The Unicorn model has been in the market for more than 16 years and has more than 2.5 million customers, he added.HMSI Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing Yadvinder Singh Guleria said with the new advanced 160cc engine delivering more power, Unicorn BS-VI "will raise the bar for seamless refined performance along with the trust of Honda reliability".
