The foundation <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2010/apr/30/prince-wales-health-charity-fraud">shut down in 2010</a> due to allegations of fraud and laundering £253,000. While the King's continued advocacy homeopathic and herbal treatments has <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/06/25/prince-charles-becomes-patron-controversial-homeopathy-group/">drawn criticism</a> from scientists and the public, he has indicated that, as reigning monarch, he won't be so vocal about political and social causes, such as promoting environmental policies to curb climate change."I'm not that stupid, I do realize that it is a separate exercise being sovereign," he told the BBC <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-46133114">in 2018.</a>But his views remain a talking point, particularly in light of the booming interest in wellness and alternative medicine today.<h2>In the 90s, Charles ventured into alternative medicine and organic foods</h2>According to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1985/01/09/garden/more-britons-trying-holistic-medicine.html">New York Times archives</a>, the King told doctors at the British Medical Association's annual dinner in 1982 he was "frightened" at how often doctors prescribe medicine to treat sickness."I would suggest that the whole imposing edifice of modern medicine, for all its breathtaking successes is, like the celebrated Tower of Pisa, slightly off balance,'' he said. ''It is frightening how dependent on drugs we are all becoming and how easy it is for doctors to prescribe them as the universal panacea for our ills.''His speech spurred new research into homeopathy and led to increased sales for alternative medicine products, per the Times. Eventually, in the 1990s, Charles launched the Foundation for Integrated Medicine to integrate alternative therapies into the UK's National Health Service. He said only in extraordinary situations the ordinance route should be adopted. Samajwadi Party (SP) member Ram Gopal Yadav asked the government not to delay the constitution of the commission as homoeopathy is a necessity for the poor as allopathy is costly and in covid times private hospitals are charging more than Rs one lakh per day. The DMK MP T. Siva said, "The government is taking away the powers of the states", and alleged that its diluting the federalism. The Bill brought by the Centre amends <keyword id="9958977" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-homoeopathy-central-council-act">the Homoeopathy Central Council Act</keyword>, 1973. After becoming an Act, the Central Council of Homoeopathy will regulate homeopathic education and practice. The Bill replaces the Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 which was promulgated on April 24, 2020. The period for the supersession of the Central Council -- The 1973 Act -- was amended in 2018 to provide for the supersession of the Central Council of Homoeopathy. The Central Council was required to be reconstituted within one year from the date of its supersession. This period was amended in 2019 to require the reconstitution of the Central Council in two years. The central government constituted a Board of Governors to exercise the powers of the Central Council. The Bill amends the Act to increase the period for the supersession of the Central Council from two years to three years. The resolution moved by K. C. Venugopal, E. Kareem and K. K.Ragesh was defeated. But Ragesh raised a point of order for the right to reply as the mover of the resolution and asked about the role of the state governments in this Bill. For instance, it's unlikely you'll ever change someone's mind when they are on the opposite end of the political spectrum to you, no matter how many statistics you throw at them about their party's failures.It happens a lot with scientific information too. Those who prefer to use alternative medicine such as homeopathy, for example, tend to do so even though there's no scientific evidence it works.Despite constant criticism and despair from scientists, homeopaths are still going strong. So much so, that one recently blogged about giving one of her patients dog saliva to treat his "bad behaviour."Anke Zimmermann, a Canadian who describes herself as a "naturopathic doctor", <a href="https://www.drzimmermann.org/successful-clinical-cases/a-child-with-aggression-and-behavioural-problems" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote about the controversial treatment on her website</a>. She described a boy called Jonah who was brought in to see her last October because of sleep and behavioural problems.Zimmermann said his problems included violence towards other children at preschool, hiding under tables, and growling. He also had a terrible fear of wolves, zombies and ghosts, she said.Zimmermann concluded the most likely explanation for this was because he was in a "dog state" from being bitten by a dog when he was two."The dog that bit him may have recently been vaccinated with the rabies vaccine or the dog bite in and of itself may have affected the boy with the rabies miasm," she wrote. "Either is possible and the phenomenon is well-known in homeopathy.<a href="http://www.homeopathytraining.co.uk/good-question/which-miasm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A miasm</a> is homeopathic term for "the ghost of the disease state still rampant in the energy system."She continued: "A bite from an animal, with or without rabies vaccination has the potential to imprint an altered state in the person who was bitten, in some ways similar to a rabies infection."Homeopathy is based on the idea that "like cures like," meaning if someone has a rash, you give them a highly diluted concoction of something that causes rashes, such as poison ivy.Not only is there no scientific evidence to support this, the remedies are often so diluted there is essentially none of the active ingredient in the water. Homeopathic remedies can also be fatal if the dose is too high and the active ingredient is something nasty. In 2016, the FDA investigated the deaths of 10 babies who were given <a href="http://www.sciencealert.com/a-homeopathic-teething-product-is-being-investigated-in-the-deaths-of-10-babies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homeopathic teething tablets</a> that contained nightshade, a poison.Going on this theory that rabies would cure rabies, Zimmermann gave the boy lyssinum, a homeopathic pellet made from heavily diluted saliva of a rabid dog. Ingesting real rabid dog saliva can give you rabies, and kill you."Within a minute or two of giving him the remedy Jonah smiled at me very broadly and beautifully, as if all the lights had just gone on," she wrote. "We said our good-byes and I felt a warm feeling of hope for this boy."Responses to the article haven't been quite so positive. Zimmermann's story received a lot of attention this month after several news sites covered it.Bonnie Henry, British Columbia's senior health officer, told CBC News that she would write to Canada's health ministry because of her grave concerns about the dog saliva remedy."There's no way I can understand why we would have anything that was meant to be saliva of a rabid dog approved for use in this country," she said.Jen Gunter, a gynecologist, <a href="https://drjengunter.wordpress.com/2018/04/15/naturopath-claims-to-treat-aggression-in-children-with-diluted-dog-rabies-saliva-no-really/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blogged about the story on her website</a>. She said that not only is it ridiculous to try and cure someone with what is essentially magic water, using rabies in any form would be highly dangerous."Naturopaths who use this must believe that somewhere, at some point in time after 1895 some brave naturopath was able to get saliva from a rabid dog without getting rabies and then handle the virus safely to dilute it out of existence," she wrote."Getting the virus would not have been impossible in those days... Louis Pasteur and Edward Jenner were working with viruses that could have killed them without a level 2 biosafety lab, but then again they didn't believe that the viruses could kill via ghost action."So either the boy was given active rabies, which would likely kill him, or he was given plain old water, and his behaviour improved because of a happy coincidence.Governments have been cracking down on homeopathy in the past year or so. In 2016, the National Health Service in the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/nhs-funds-homeopathy-bogus-2016-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UK was still funding homeopathy</a>, but last year <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/britain-bans-homeopathy-funding-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said it would stop</a>. In the US, the FDA is also being more discerning about how <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/new-ftc-homeopathy-rules-2016-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homeopathic treatments are labeled</a>.But homeopathy is one of the most popular forms of alternative medicine, with an <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1475491617300231" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated 0.7-9.8% of the population in various countries using it</a>.As far as we know, there isn't anyone walking around with rabies as a result of their homeopathic pills and potions - <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/30/homeopaths-offer-services-fight-Ebola" target="_blank" rel="noopener">or Ebola for that matter</a> - suggesting homeopaths aren't actually using active diseases in their treatments. Here is what my experiences in Germany were like.<h2>I had a personal prenatal and postpartum midwife</h2>In Germany, your health insurance covers the costs of a professional "hebamme" or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/what-is-a-midwife">midwife</a> who can carry out many of your prenatal exams that don't involve an ultrasound. They can also sometimes do home visits during pregnancy as well.Midwives in Germany undergo extensive training and also lead most births, whether at a hospital, birth center, or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mother-home-births-planned-unplanned-2023-1">home birth</a>. The midwife also provides a number of postpartum house calls, something I personally found invaluable.Our midwives helped us with anything from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-on-tiktok-says-her-nipple-fell-off-while-breastfeeding-2023-3">breastfeeding issues</a> to how to bathe a baby, and weighed the baby every visit to make sure he was growing well.Besides all the pregnancy and postpartum care, midwives can also give you a crash course about starting solids, and insurance will cover breastfeeding advice from your midwife until the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/how-to-stop-breastfeeding">baby weans.</a><h2>I had so many pain relief options</h2>At both hospitals and birth centers, Germany offers quite an array of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-had-four-babies-in-uk-never-paid-anything-2021-11">pain relief options</a>. I gave birth at three different hospitals in Germany.When it comes to medicated pain relief options, German hospitals generally can provide epidurals, pethidine injections, and paracetamol with or without codeine. Some hospitals also offer laughing gas as an option.Waterbirth is a very common option in Germany, with a lot of hospitals in the country offering waterbirth as a possibility. I got to experience this personally with my middle child, which was a really nice experience.Other alternative forms of pain relief common in Germany that aren't necessarily offered in many other countries include aromatherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, sterile water injections, and heating packs.I tried them all, of course.<h2>I didn't know who was attending any of my births</h2>Unlike in the United States, the vast majority of births in Germany are attended by midwives or OB-GYNs who happen to be on duty at the time, not by your personal OB-GYN. Instead, you generally have an OB-GYN throughout your pregnancy and see them for your postpartum checkup. When you actually go into labor, whoever happens to be working at the hospital at the time will be there at your birth, and you likely will have never met them before.There are some exceptions: if you have a homebirth, your midwife and her backup will get to know you prior to the birth. Also, if you opt for a birth center, there is a team of midwives there whom you get to know in advance throughout your pregnancy, although it's still a matter of chance which ones will be on duty for your labor.<h2>My insurance covered prenatal and postpartum classes</h2>Something really helpful for expecting parents in Germany is the fact that many prenatal and postpartum classes are covered partially or fully by health insurance.I got to do a birth preparation multi-session class when expecting my first son, which was mostly covered by insurance, with a special session for partners on the last evening. My insurance also covered part of the costs of a prenatal yoga course, as it fell under the category of "preventive care."Last but not least, I loved that my insurance covered most of the costs for a postpartum pelvic floor exercise course called "ruckbildungskurs." The emphasis on preventive care for pregnancy and birth here is helpful in many ways, from learning useful exercises to meeting fellow expectant parents.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A woman visited hospital due to severe pain and foul-smelling discharge coming from her breast. </li><li>She was diagnosed with cancer and a rare "flesh-eating" <keyword id="11899268" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="infection" source="Orion">infection</keyword>, and had her right breast removed.</li></ul>A woman who went to hospital with severe pain and foul-smelling discharge coming out of her right breast was diagnosed with a rare "flesh-eating" infection as well as <keyword id="11937473" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="breast-cancer" source="Orion">breast cancer</keyword>.The woman had noticed a breast lump six months before visiting the hospital, and followed her family's advice to treat it with a homeopathic tablet, according to a case study by <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> professionals working in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia <a href="https://www.cureus.com/articles/90928-necrotizing-infection-of-the-breast-a-case-report-on-a-rare-presentation-of-breast-carcinoma#references" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published on April 26 </a><a href="https://www.cureus.com/articles/90928-necrotizing-infection-of-the-breast-a-case-report-on-a-rare-presentation-of-breast-carcinoma#references" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science</a>. The name of the treatment she used wasn't documented, they said.The health professionals diagnosed the woman with invasive breast cancer and a potentially deadly, flesh-eating infection called necrotizing fasciitis.They said that the patient's choice to opt for homeopathy as a sole treatment may have led to a delay in the cancer diagnosis. There is <a href="https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancer-in-general/treatment/complementary-alternative-therapies/individual-therapies/homeopathy">no scientific evidence</a> that homeopathy can prevent or treat cancer.Jayant Vaidya, a professor of surgery and oncology at University College London, told Insider that, while there is no evidence of homeopathy causing harm by itself, it "can prevent people from taking proper treatment."<h2>Flesh-eating infections of the breast are rare</h2>Necrotizing fasciitis is rare, especially in the breast, but it can progress quickly and <a href="https://wjes.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13017-019-0286-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">kills 20% of people that get it,</a> according to research. The treatment is a cocktail of strong antibiotics and emergency surgery to cut away the dead tissue. It's not clear how she got the infection. The condition tends to affect the limbs and the area between the genitals and anus. There have only been a handful of reports of this flesh-eating infection in the breast — usually after trauma, such as surgery, that allows bacteria to enter the breast tissue. Patients that get necrotizing fasciitis usually have diabetes or are immunocompromized, though it has been reported in healthy people too.The woman, who had diabetes and high blood pressure, was given antibiotics and had her right breast removed, according to the report.Her cancer was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the health professionals said in the report.<h2>Breast cancer symptoms</h2>Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer in the US, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast/basic_info/symptoms.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. </a>Symptoms to look out for include: a new lump in the breast or armpit; breast pain; any change in size, shape or colour of the breast; nipple changes including discharge or discolouration; and skin changes.

But chemistry and medical experts say there is no evidence behind such an intervention, and even homeopathic doctors <a href="https://www.ncirs.org.au/sites/default/files/2018-12/homeopathy-vaccination-fact-sheet.pdf">recommend conventional vaccines</a>.Rodgers told Rogan that he is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/are-you-allergic-to-covid-vaccines-moderna-pfizer-jj-2021-3">allergic to polyethylene glycol</a> (PEG), an ingredient in the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister <keyword id="638723" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kiren-Rijiju">Kiren Rijiju</keyword>, who holds additional charge of the <keyword id="6371607" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayush">Ayush</keyword> Ministry, said that while homoeopathy treatment is not to be given in standalone mode for Covid-19 treatment, <keyword id="10752099" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayush-interventions">Ayush interventions</keyword>, including homoeopathy, as add-on to standard care are allowed. He also said that the Ayush Ministry has taken many steps with the help of other systems of medicine, including homeopathy, for Covid-19-related treatment. Homoeopathy medicines add-ons allowed in COVID-19 treatment, says Youth Affairs and Sports Minister

Nobody expects touchy-feely niceties from a chatbot. Mediocre writing, sure, along with some made-up facts and a bit of random racism. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weird-bing-chatbot-google-chatgpt-alive-conscious-sentient-ethics-2023-2">I've written about those AI downsides myself</a>.But these <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-and-ozempic-are-not-magic-bullets-2023-5">big, new chatbots</a> can, as we know, also generate <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-chatbot-pi-offers-personal-assistant-advice-how-it-works-2023-5">human-sounding responses</a> to prompts and questions. And in a recent head-to-head test, that capability gave the bots a surprising superiority in what ought to be one of the most intrinsically human of all activities: <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/10.1001/jamainternmed.2023.1838" target="_blank" rel="noopener">serving as a doctor</a>.To conduct the test, a team of researchers from the University of California in San Diego lurked on r/AskDocs, a Reddit forum where registered, verified healthcare professionals answer people's medical questions. The researchers selected nearly 200 representative questions on the forum, from the silly-sounding ("Swallowed a toothpick, friend said I'm going to die") to the terrifying ("miscarriage one day after normal ultrasound?"). They then fed the questions into the virtual maw of the bot ChatGPT, and had a separate group of healthcare experts conduct a blind evaluation of answers from both AI and MDs. The results were shocking. For one thing, ChatGPT came out well ahead of the human doctors on usefulness. Almost invariably, the chatbot answers were rated as three or four times as reliable as the ones from the poor wee humans. What's more, the bots didn't show any of the distressing tendency to make stuff up that they often have in other circumstances.But here's the most striking part: The chatbot answers, on average, were rated seven times as empathetic as the ones from humans. Seven times! They provided just what you want from your doctor: care and an emotional connection. It's as if the unfeeling android Mr. Data figured out how to convincingly emulate Dr. Crusher's comforting bedside manner.Now admittedly, the bar is low on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-more-empathetic-than-doctors-study-save-time-bedside-manner-2023-5">beating human doctors</a> for displays of empathy. Still, the apparent facility with which the bot could handle medical concerns, in both style and substance, presages an actual, real-world use for these things. I'm skeptical that AI bots driven by large language models will revolutionize journalism or even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-chatbots-chatgpt-google-bard-microsoft-bing-break-internet-search-2023-2">make internet search better</a>. I suppose I'm open to the idea that they'll accelerate the coding of software and the analysis of spreadsheets. But I now think that with some tinkering, chatbots could radically improve the way people interact with healthcare providers and our broken medical-industrial complex.The point of the empathy experiment wasn't to show that ChatGPT could replace a physician or a nurse. It was to show that a chatbot could have a role in the provision of care. Our for-profit healthcare system doesn't hire enough doctors and nurses, and it expects the ones it does hire to treat more and more patients, assembly-line style. Nobody likes it, except the people getting rich."People are disconnected from healthcare, and they're desperate," says John Ayers, a computational epidemiologist at UC San Diego who was lead author of the new paper. So they're looking for answers on forums like r/AskDocs. "This is how patients do this now. And doctors didn't sign up for it."The pressure to answer those messages has become intense. The COVID pandemic accelerated remote, online contact between doctors and patients — and even in the pandemic's first year, research suggested docs spent <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093%2Fjamia%2Focaa229" target="_blank" rel="noopener">almost an hour every workday dealing with their email inboxes</a>. Add in dealing with other electronic medical record technocracy and you end up with some doctors dedicating <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2758002" target="_blank" rel="noopener">half their time every day</a> to these back-and-forths. It's enough that insurance often <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/24/health/emails-billing-doctors-patients.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bills for time spent answering messages</a>, making them a potential source of revenue above and beyond face-to-face interactions..Prior studies asked whether patients and doctors <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s00439-022-02512-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">like using these messaging systems</a>; Ayers looked at whether the system actually work. "We used real messages," he says. "Nobody has ever done that before." The result, based on the quality of the interactions, was definitive. "ChatGPT won in a landslide," Ayers says. "This stuff is probably ready for prime time."Based on the bot's initial success, Ayers is ready to see what more it can handle. "We want to begin randomized controlled trials, where you evaluate patient messaging against patient outcomes," he says — not just whether the messages are accurate or empathetic, but whether they help keep people healthier or alive longer. What if a chatbot could help someone recovering from a heart attack stay on a low-salt diet, remind them to take their meds, keep their treatment updated? "A message in that case could save that patient's life," Ayers says.For all the tech-world promises of robot pets and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/27/opinion/chatbot-therapy-mental-health.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AI psychotherapists</a>, the idea of a caring chatbot still feels destabilizing — maybe even <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/qjvk97/eating-disorder-helpline-disables-chatbot-for-harmful-responses-after-firing-human-staff" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dangerous</a>. Nobody thinks ChatGPT actually cares, any more than they think it's actually smart. But if our current, broken healthcare system makes it impossible for humans to take care of one another, maybe fake taking-care will save real lives. An artificially intelligent assistant may not be <a href="https://www.brattleblog.brattlefilm.org/2018/08/22/more-human-than-human-the-legacy-of-blade-runner-13845/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more human than human</a>, but maybe it'll be more humane.Specialized AI systems — not dumb chatbots — are already pretty good at diagnostics. They're highly trained to detect one thing, like a tumor or sepsis, using specific test results as input. But they're expensive and hard to build. So the medical establishment is jumping on chatbots as a cheaper, more ubiquitous tool. Dozens of companies are <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsr2214184" target="_blank" rel="noopener">working on applications</a>, aiming for uses from diagnosing illnesses to helping with the slog of paperwork that has somehow become the responsibility of both doctors and patients alike. If you're lucky enough to have health insurance, your insurance company probably already has some kind of dumb chatbot for you to talk to before you can get a human on the phone.If you ask people whether they're into that idea, they mostly say no. Sixty percent of Americans surveyed recently by the Pew Research Center <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/science/2023/02/22/60-of-americans-would-be-uncomfortable-with-provider-relying-on-ai-in-their-own-health-care/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said they wouldn't want an AI system diagnosing what's ailing them or proposing treatments</a>. But they're probably going to get it anyway. Don't tell anyone I said this, but a lot of what healthcare workers do is already a bit formulaic — at least at the lowest-level, patient-facing interface. You feel icky and call an advice nurse; they ask preset questions to determine whether you should get to an ER or just go take a Tylenol. That's called triage. Or, if you have electronic access to your medical records, maybe you get results back from a new set of tests, and you email your doc to ask what they mean. Either way, you don't expect to enjoy these encounters. They're perfunctory. Robotic, even.Well, you know who's very good at robotic things? Robots! Recently a team of researchers from Harvard showed dozens of descriptions of health problems to three groups: physicians, people with no medical training, and ChatGPT. They asked everyone (and -thing) to diagnose the illness, and then for triage recommendations. The non-doctor humans were allowed to do an internet search — what healthcare folks call, with dread, "Dr. Google." But even with the online assist, the untrained humans were terrible at diagnosis. No shock there. But, as the researchers report in a recent preprint — meaning it isn't peer-reviewed yet — the chatbot was almost as good at diagnosis (scoring over 80%) as the human physicians (who scored over 90%). And on triage, ChatGPT got a little better than 70% correct. That sounds crummy compared with the physician's 91%, but still! This is a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.01.30.23285067" target="_blank" rel="noopener">general-purpose chatbot</a>, almost as good as a fully trained doctor.Now imagine adding to that skill set the sort of mundane, time-consuming healthcare tasks that chatbots should be able to handle — things like scheduling appointments, requesting prior authorization from insurance, and dealing with electronic medical records. "These are tasks nobody went into medicine to do, and they are massive headaches, massive time sinks, physically and emotionally draining," says Teva Brender, a medical resident at the University of California in San Francisco. Maybe a chatbot could generate at least the beginnings of this kind of bureaucratic traffic, along with all the emails to patients. "The physician could skim it and say, 'Yes, this is right,' and send it off," Brender says.That seems like a likely scenario. Highly trained chatbots will work in tandem with physicians, nurses, and physician assistants to deliver more empathetic and more complete answers to people who need care. As Ayers' team wrote in 2019, people are so desperate for medical help that they <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2753884" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post images of their own genitals</a> to the subreddit r/STD in hopes of getting an accurate diagnosis. That is just sad beyond belief, and a staggering indictment of our truly shitty and inhumane system of healthcare.In a system this poor, AI could actually be an improvement. "A human clinician backed by the knowledge base and processing power of AI systems will only be better," says Jonathan Chen, a physician at the Stanford University School of Medicine who has been studying AI systems. "It is entirely likely that patients will reach for imperfect medical advice from automated systems with 24/7 availability, rather than waiting months for an appointment with a human expert."To make those AI-driven systems better, lots of folks — including Ayers' team — are now working on smaller language models finely tuned with medical information. ChatGPT's attraction, such as it is, is that it's a generalist drawing input from everything on the internet. But that's how biases and misinformation sneak in. Give those medical chatbots access to people's individual medical records, and they could offer more precisely directed advice. "When this tech gets access to electronic health records, that's the real game changer," Ayers says.If a future of AI-driven health advice — complete with access to your medical records — makes you worried, I don't blame you. The bad science-fiction outcomes here are pretty dystopic. After years of work, the Food and Drug Administration still doesn't have a framework that's ready to <a href="https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/software-medical-device-samd/artificial-intelligence-and-machine-learning-software-medical-device" target="_blank" rel="noopener">regulate AI and machine learning in medical devices</a>. Someone will have to figure out all the liability questions surrounding chatbot advice, especially when it's bad. Healthcare AI startups will want the cheapest versions with the most financial bang, which won't necessarily have the best patient outcomes. And if a healthcare company manages to fine-tune a chatbot with state-of-the-science medicine, then any company can do the same thing with homeopathy or scented candles — or anti-vaccine nonsense. Those chatbots will spew dangerous misinformation, both eloquently and empathetically."That's the worst case," says Greg Corrado, the head of Health AI at Google. "This is not something for Silicon Valley folks to do in isolation." That means developing these systems in conjunction with healthcare experts, not just healthcare executives — to make sure they're private and safe and that they actually help people.It won't be easy, but it might be necessary. Our healthcare system, sadly, isn't built to provide everyone with decent human caregivers. And until that changes, it'd be nice to have robots that could help us stay healthy.
