IIM-C students see a dramatic jump in salaries after an MBA

Average salaries went up by 22% at IIM-K IIM Kozhikode, on the other hand, placed over 400 students, witnessing a 22% increase in the average salaries as compared to last year. The average salary for the batch was ₹2.3 million — which <a href="https://indiaeducationdiary.in/iim-kozhikode-registers-100-final-placement-for-largest-batch-ever-closes-process-in-5-days/" data-type="tilCustomLink">went up to ₹2.7 million for the top performing students.</a> “Despite the negative sentiment of the job market, green energy, and e-commerce sectors along with emerging startups — including education technology startups — have hired this year along with the other traditional firms. IIMK has seen a 200% surge in offers from start-ups along with more than 150% increase in the roles from e-commerce firms securing 12.5% of the total offers from these sectors,” said professor Shovan Chowdhury, chairperson of <keyword id="8671808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="placements-at-iim">placements at IIM</keyword> Kozhikode. At MDI, Gurgaon, Amazon offered the highest package at ₹4 million. And the average compensation too increased by 9.5% at ₹ 2.2 million. More than half of the offers (57%) were from companies in the consulting, BFSI (Banking, Insurance and Financial Services), technology and telecom. This includes 63 offers from PwC, Deloitte, ICICI Bank, IDFC Bank and Airtel. Average MBA graduate salary grew multifold in the last two years According to a Campus Salary Hiring and Employment 2018 report by Mettl, the average salary for MBA graduates was recorded as ₹930,000 per annum — which has grown multifold in the last two years. While consulting firms are known to pay the highest to the fresh graduates, e-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra emerged as the top recruiters this year. Flipkart made nine offers while Amazon rolled out 13 offers at IIM Lucknow. Indian B-schools are beating the slowdown with average salary offers at ₹2.5 million

Consulting &amp; Strategy accounts for almost a third of the total job offers As expected, consulting and strategy was the most sought after domain this year, accounting for 29% of the total offers. The sector offered the highest salary packages at an average remuneration of ₹24 lakh per annum. This includes roles like investment banking, supply chain management, advisory, analytics and corporate strategy. Other job offers came from sectors such as finance, analytics, general management, Human Resources, IT, operations, sales and marketing. The maximum number of job offers came from top multinationals like — ByteDance, Cognizant, Deloitte, JP Morgan and TATA Steel. Highest stipend at ₹3 lakh during summer placements The growing trend of summer placements and pre-placement offers too might have had an effect on the increased interest of recruiters. The graduates also secured pre-placement offers from Goldman Sachs, DE Shaw, Emami Group, Titan and more. IIM Shillong witnesses a whopping 73% increase in highest package at ₹48.5 lakh

IIM Visakhapatnam places all its students at an average salary of ₹13 lakh; highest package stood at ₹27 lakh

The highest packages were reported at more than ₹3 million, compared to the average at nearly ₹2 million. According to a Campus Salary Hiring and Employment 2018 report by Mettl, the average salary for MBA graduates last year was recorded as ₹930,000 per annum, which has increased to more than a million this season. The trend clearly indicates business school graduates are now commanding better starting pay. As many as 55 companies breached the average salary mark for MDI this year, for instance, according to ET report. And not all are from the prestigious IIMs. In fact, the highest-paid graduates this year are reportedly from the University Business School (UBS), Punjab University, where the <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/chandigarh/ubs-touches-new-high-top-package-rs-53-lakh/711070.html">highest package</a> was recorded at ₹5.3 million this year. India’s B-schools are seeing higher salary packages for graduates — and it’s not just IIMs

While Boston Consulting Group emerged as the leading recruiter at XLRI, which also scored 27% of job offers in the from sales &amp; marketing domain. But it is not just these students who are walking away with the best of salary offers. Students of other B-schools like Faculty of Management Studies Delhi and Management Development Institute (MDI) are receiving salary offers that are just as good. This year, on average, FMS Delhi students received job offers that paid ₹25.6 lakh. The best paying job offer went as high as ₹58.6 lakh per annum. This is the kind of high paying salaries that are generally associated with IIMs, XLRI and others. Thanks to A-list recruiters like Capgemini, McKinsey &amp; Co, Flipkart, Airtel and Xiaomi, almost 75% of FMS students received offers that paid above ₹20 lakh. That is three in four students. For the top performing quartile, the salaries went as high as ₹37.5 lakh. Though FMS ranks 35th in top Indian B-schools, the students who get admission to this Delhi University-affiliated college have to score 99% in CAT. The increased demand for digital skills across job roles seems to be working in favour of fresh graduates. “When you talk about digital businesses, they will definitely look at retaining talent with digital skills. The e-commerce sector has seen the highest growth, in terms of hiring at nearly 141%, compared to last year,” Kanwal Kapil, Dean of Placements at MDI<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/amazon-becomes-the-top-recruiter-at-mdi-gurgaon-with-a-40-5-lakh-offer/articleshow/73545137.cms"> told </a>Business Insider. During the summer placements as well, both the two institutes witnessed a 40% and 14% increase in offers from consulting companies, respectively. The drive -- held for the 38th batch of <keyword id="473399" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="post-graduate-programme-in-management" source="Orion">Post Graduate Programme in Management</keyword> and 19th batch of PG Programme in Food and Agri-Business Management -- saw 566 students getting a total of 570 offers. This is the first time the institute has secured 100 per cent placement for a batch this big in its 38-year history. According to a press release issued by IIM-L, the highest package offered during the drive was ₹ 3.5 lakh per month. The average and median stipends offered to students were ₹1.41 lakh per month and ₹ 1.5 lakh per month, respectively. This is also the highest-ever in IIM-L's history, added the communique. Students secured offers in varied fields -- including consulting, finance, general management, IT &amp; analytics, sales and marketing, operations and retail e-commerce -- from top recruiters across the globe. IIM-L scores 100% placement

<ul><li>Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, <keyword id="8754640" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="xaviers-school-of-management">Xaviers School of Management</keyword> (XLRI) and <keyword id="481185" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Management-Development-Institute">Management Development Institute</keyword> (MDI) — say they have attracted the most promising job packages from consulting firms. </li><li>Consulting majors McKinsey &amp; Company, <keyword id="136162" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boston-Consulting-Group">Boston Consulting Group</keyword> (BCG) rolled out 50 offers at <keyword id="19483" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-ahmedabad">IIM Ahmedabad</keyword>. </li><li>XLRI also attracted the highest number of offers from the consulting domain (26%). This includes the pre-placement offers as well. Other recruiters included Accenture Strategy, Bain &amp; Co., Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and Deloitte. This is as per the Cluster1 placements at the IIM-A campus — which was concluded in four cohorts — investment banking and markets, management consulting, advisory consulting and private equity, venture capital and asset management. “Consulting firms continued to hire in large numbers in the first cluster, offering management consulting roles across geographies including Malaysia and Middle East,” the institute said. It’s not just the IIMs This has become a common trend across B-schools. XLRI also attracted the highest number of offers from the consulting domain at 26%, this year. Global multinationals KPMG and PwC were the top most recruiters, rolling out the highest number of offers. This simply mirrored last year’s trend wherein Boston Consulting Group was the leading recruiter. On the other hand, more than half (57%) of the offers at MDI came from companies in the consulting, BFSI, technology and telecom sectors. The average compensation at the institute too increased by 9.5% at ₹ 2.2 million. This includes 63 offers from PwC, Deloitte, ICICI Bank, IDFC Bank and Airtel. Last year too, IIM Bangalore reportedly scored over 30% placements in the consulting sector — including overseas job offers. Investment banking follows Banking, Insurance and Financial Services(BFSI ) is the second biggest chunk of recruiters. At IIM-A, Avendus and JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co offered 18 job letters. At XLRI too BFSI which recruited 17%, also turned out to be the highest paymaster. It offered domestic salaries as high as ₹5 million. “The increase in BFSI hiring can be attributed to a higher number of candidates opting for the finance specialization and a vibrant appreciation for finance in the form of finance associations and an in-house XLRI Student Investment fund,” XLRI said. The number of companies coming has more or less remained the same since last year, however the number of students that were made an offer to have increased,” Kanika K Ahuja, placement in-charge at LSR told ET. The students who get admission to these Delhi University-affiliated colleges have to score over 95% in the 12th grade — due to high cut-offs. Among the top recruiters were Gartner, EY, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, Samsung and Accenture. While the overall average salaries in India went up by 45% for undergraduate students. This is despite the economic downturn in the country. The growing trend of summer placements The growing trend of summer placements and pre-placement offers too might have had an effect on the increased interest of recruiters. Companies like Deutsche Bank, Citi Bank are also banking on summer placements to assess talent, thereby extending pre-placement offers. Delhi University students bag job offers that pay as much as ₹31 lakh per annum

<keyword id="6006683" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="medha-kumari">Medha Kumari</keyword>, a <keyword id="66379" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="National-Institute-of-Technology">National Institute of Technology</keyword> student from the western state of Bihar, recently clutched a Rs 39.5 lakh (4 million) annual package from <keyword id="99699" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adobe">Adobe</keyword> during the ongoing 2017 placement drive. Several students from IIT and IIM have bagged such offers from global giants like <keyword id="6355629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> and <keyword id="10387" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> in the past, but why Kumari's story is inspiring is because she is the first girl student from her college to have made it to Adobe, and that too at the <keyword id="3947508" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-salary-package">highest salary package</keyword> offered to any NIT Patna student in the past. Born to a small trader Manoj Kumar Karak, Kumari is a computer science and engineering student at NIT Patna. Her mother Benu Karak is a homemaker. She had earlier bagged an annual pay package of Rs 8.75 lakh at another software company, but tried again. “Since I was expecting better pay package, I started preparing for the placement once again and it worked. The interview was quite tough but I was confident,” she says. Apart from Adobe, 37 companies including Tata Motors, Samsung R&amp;D Institute India, HighRadius, Hero MotoCorp, Wipro, L&amp;T Corporate (POWAI), IBM, L&amp;T Construction, Capgemini, Futures First and Amazon participated in the placement drive. Amazon became the second biggest recruiter offering five students Rs 27.5 lakh pay package each. HighRadius meanwhile made 51 offers this year, which is the biggest from a recruiter, out of which 49 students were offered Rs 7 lakh package while 2 students received annual offers of Rs 8 lakh. It is a player in cloud-based integrated receivables software space. Among all these offers, Medha Kumari's salary package has been the highest for an NIT-Patna student till date, according to Samrat Mukherjee from the Training and Placement Cell at NIT Patna. Kumari had appeared for an online test conducted by Adobe on the institute’s campus, followed by a technical test and an interview conducted in Kolkata. 40 other students also appeared for the online test, however, she became the only student to clear all rounds and secure a job in Adobe from her college. The 20-year-old student is now bracing to kick-start her stint at Adobe, Noida from June 2018 as software development, implementation, and coding officer.

Things you should keep in mind pre-MBA 
 
1. Have a realistic view of the current job scenario: 
Today is not the best time to do an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mba&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">MBA</a>. The market is already flooded with thousands of us. Plus, the whole Euro crisis is still lingering and particularly the investment bank scenario doesn't look really good. 
 
Growth is still slow. i-Banks are not hiring currently. And even if the entire economic downturn was to completely go away (for example, by magic), they still wouldn't. The reason being that during the boom and just before the bust, they over-hired. 
 
2. Keep a check on expectations: 
It's just another degree. Yes, they do teach you a lot of stuff in 2 years, but that's it. There is nothing magical about the course. It's just that currently the MBA degree is in hype, so you will get he perceived benefit of it. But do not expect that the course will make you the perfect manager or a suave entrepreneur. 
 
3. The news are crap: 
You know, the ones that your family and relatives rub your nose in once every year? The one that glorify a bunch of young, clueless people for having a 2 crore package? It's all crap. No one gets a 2 crore package. The highest you get in India would be Rs 40-45 lakh pa. And that too for i-Banks which are not hiring currently. Anything else would be a maximum of Rs 30lakh pa. And this too would be raked in by the top 5% of the batch. International salaries seem pretty high in absolute terms, but do remember to also factor in the PPP index to get a more realistic view. 
 
4. Be ready to slog it out: 
The MBA will be far more hectic than your undergrad. This is true irrespective of the college. So be ready for sleepless nights, multiple simultaneous deadlines, a few failures and stressful times.Also, there will be a lot of people far more intelligent, hard-working than you. So be ready to face really tough competition. 
 
5. If you have time, develop your resume: 
Admission is just the beginning. There's an entire trilogy after that - summer placements, final placements and then finally long-term job satisfaction.For the first two, you will need a stellar CV in order to maximize your chances of landing your dream job. So, utilize all the time you have now. Pep up your resume. Start reading up about economics and finance. There's literally thousands of resources - free e-books, blogs, courses, certifications on the internet. 
 
Things you should keep in mind during the MBA 
 
1. Academics: 
Make the most of what you get during these 2 years. Attend all classes. Read as much as you can.Work smart. Exams aren't the perfect measure of ability and intelligence. However, they are the norm and you have to deal with it. So game the system. Go through previous years' papers. Know the most crucial and oft-asked concepts. Research about the type of questions that are asked for various subjects - case studies, MCQs, theory, calculation-intensive. Customize your prep plan accordingly. 
 
2. Co-curriculars: 
Make sure you have a decently diversified resume. Participate in case study competitions, B-plans, paper presentations. The exposure will be a really intense learning experience. 
 
3. Clubs: 
Follow the golden rule: Be part of 3 clubs - one that will help you with the placements, one that is in line with your interests and will help you hone your skills, one for fun.Do not overload yourself. Know when to say "no" or to walk away. People usually take on more responsibilities than they can manage. Don't do it. 
 
4. Having fun: 
As goes with everything, do not let one part of your life dominate the others. Hang out with friends, get drunk, go out on unplanned excursions, say yes to that late night movie even though you are extremely tired. Friends are always good to have. Make sure you have a few to last you more than 2 years. 
 
5. The dreaded <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SOCIAL+MEDIA&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">social media</a>: 
When you are a student, it is fine to have an archaic<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LINKEDIN&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> LinkedIn </a>profile or a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FACEBOOK&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Facebook</a> feed filled with stupid stuff teens do. However, recruiters nowadays actively scourge the social media profiles of potential candidates. So clean up your act, especially before placements.
