<p><a href="http://www.ouigo.com/en">Ouigo</a> (as in "We Go"), an independently run subsidiary of the SNCF, France's national rail company, will begin operation on April 2. SNCF President Guillaume Pepy calls it the best high-speed rail deal in the world, <a href="http://www.latribune.fr/entreprises-finance/services/transport-logistique/20130219trib000749727/sncf-ouigo-le-tgv-encore-moins-cher-qu-en-chine.html">according to La Tribune</a>.</p>
<p>Ouigo will operate its own <keyword id="6360847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trains">trains</keyword>, with more frequent service than the SNCF currently offers. To allow for such cheap fares, it will adopt the <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword> travel model offered by airlines like easyJet and <keyword id="137187" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ryanair">Ryanair</keyword>.</p>
<p>That means cutting service and adding fees. Passengers can bring only one small bag (about the size of an airplane carry-on) and a purse or backpack.</p>
<p>In a move reminiscent of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-airlines-100-carry-on-fee-2012-10">Spirit Airlines' $100 carry-on bag fee</a>, if a traveler waits until boarding time to pay for an extra bag, there's a €40 charge. If done ahead of time, the cost is only €5.</p>
<p>Seating in a car with outlets costs an extra €2; getting information about a reservation via the phone requires another €1, <a href="http://www.lemonde.fr/economie/article/2013/02/19/ouigo-ou-comment-ameliorer-la-productivite-de-la-sncf_1835084_3234.html">according to Le Monde</a>.</p>
<p>Reservations can be changed for €10 (€20 if done on the phone), but not fully reimbursed, and there is no food or drink service on the train.</p>
<p>Another tradeoff for taking Ouigo is that its Paris hub is in Marne la Vallée (where Euro Disney is located) — a €7.30 trip from the city center on the RER, Paris' commuter rail system. Ouigo stations in Lyon, Marseille, and Montpellier are much more central.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.thetransportpolitic.com/2013/02/24/in-france-a-truly-low-cost-high-speed-rail-option/">Yonah Freemark at the Transport Politic points out</a>, the SNCF has no competitors in the domestic market, and Ouigo is meant to target travelers who prefer driving to taking the train. (Many of those potential customers own their own cars and live in the Paris suburbs, so the extra RER trip is a minor factor.)</p>
<p>Only 10 percent of all Ouigo tickets will be priced at €10; the rest will cost at most €85, according to Freemark. But for those travelers who snatch up the reduced tickets, it's an excellent deal — especially when France's expensive road tolls and gas prices are accounted for.</p>

France Is Making High-Speed Rail Travel Incredibly Cheap

The smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2014 saw a growth of 84% as against the sales in the same quarter last year. According to a Nielsen report, the smartphone market in urban India grew by 89% in the calendar year 2013 as against the calendar year 2012. There were 51 million people using smartphones in urban India in 2013 as compared to 2012.<br />

And it is likely to keep zooming ahead. As predicted by the International Data Corporation (IDC), annual smartphone sales growth in India is estimated to be at 40% for the next five years.<br />

Currently, the share of smartphones in the Indian handsets market has reached 10%. Going by the trend of consumers in other countries, when the smartphone market reaches 10%, it reflects a major shift in consumer attitude in adopting smartphones.<br />

The smartphone market in the country has a host of new brands, both indigenous and international, and that brings intense competition. What’s Driving Smartphone Market On High Speed

It will take six whole years for the Mumbai­-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor but the Railway Minister says that the fare will be less than airfare.<br /> Railway Minister <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword> today in <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> said the ambitious project is doable and the highspeed train project would be cost effective too. The high speed bullet train is expected to cover 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph and operating speed of 320 kmph. At present, Duronto Express takes about seven hours to cover the distance between the two financial centres.<br />
<br />
Talking about the massive funding received for the particular project, Prabhu said "there was no regional bias. Every state has got more than double than earlier." The high speed rail project has been sanctioned with technical and financial assistance from the government of Japan and the joint feasibility study of the project has already been done by Japanese International Agency.<br />
<br />
The 508km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor is estimated to cost about Rs 97,636 crore, 81 per cent of the funding for the project will come in form of a loan from Japan. The project cost includes possible cost escalation, interest during construction and import duties. The project is being funded by Japan with a soft loan for 50 years at 0.1 per cent annual interest with 15 years' moratorium. Rolling stock and other equipment like signalling and power system will be imported from Japan as per the loan agreement.<br />
<br />
Railways has spelt out its policy with regard to running of high speed and semi­high speed trains by identification of potential routes for both kinds of train services. Prabhu said feasibility studies for other high speed corridors have been awarded to various railway companies. Delhi­-Mumbai high speed corridor has been awarded to the consortium of the Third Railway Survey and Design Institute Group Corporation (Chinese consultant) and Lahmeyer International from India. Feasibility study of high speed corridors on Mumbai­- Chennai, Delhi­-Kolkata, Delhi­-Nagpur and Mumbai­-Nagpur have also been awarded to different global consultants.<br />
<br />
Prabhu said railways have identified nine corridors for feasibility of semi-­high speed rail. Delhi­-Chandigarh, Chennai­-Bengaluru­-Mysore, Delhi­-Kanpur, Nagpur­-Bilaspur, Mumbai-­Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai­-Hyderabad and Nagpur­-Secunderabd are being considered for semi-­high speed routes.<br />

Highspeed train to take six years to complete, train fare to be less than airfare

<p><keyword id="564557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="high-speed-rail">High speed rail</keyword> is moving forward in California, but progress is pretty stagnant around the rest of the country. Still, there are a lot of proposals out there, and when placed on one map, they form an impressive rail network.</p>
<p>This map was put together by <a href="http://www.californiarailmap.com/">California Rail Map</a>, led by Alfred Twu, which combined existing proposals from high speed rail advocacy groups around the US. Twu <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/feb/06/us-high-speed-rail-network-possible">described his process for the Guardian</a>:</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>The incident began when police received calls American soldiers were threatening people with an air rifle near Itaewon subway station, local police told Yonhap. The soldier, a U.S. Army staff sergeant and his wife then fled in a vehicle, beginning a high-speed pursuit with local police.</span></p>
<p><span>When the soldier attempted to speed away, he "ran over" a South Korean officer, the police said. That's when they opened fire. His vehicle was later found next to the nearest Army base. The soldier, whose name has not been released, is in Army custody and is recovering from the gunshot wound at the <span>Brian Allgood Community Hospital.</span></span></p>
<p><span>The incident is just the latest in a long line of high-profile misbehavior from U.S. troops in Asian host countries.</span></p>
