This surge in demand drives the prices of these stocks higher initially, but their prices eventually adjust, often resulting in significant losses for investors. Such lottery-like stocks are typically inexpensive compared to other stocks and are perceived as opportunities for substantial gains, much like lottery tickets. However, the likelihood of a high return is minimal, categorising them as high-risk investments. Given that a good mood can encourage risk-taking behaviour, the researchers sought to find if weather conditions are linked to the demand for these <keyword id="21956496" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="high-risk-stocks" source="keywords">high-risk stocks</keyword>, and they did — a finding that could have significant implications for financial markets. “Over-optimism is associated with overconfidence in many cases and investors who are overconfident tend to trade lottery-like stocks more. We all know the pressure of meeting deadlines, but what if we told you that being late doesn’t just affect your calendar — it could actually tarnish how people see the quality of your <keyword id="6355058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Work" source="Orion">work</keyword>? According to researchers, that’s exactly the case. They found that work submitted late is seen as lower in quality than the same work submitted on time or early, no matter how great it actually is. It turns out, missing a deadline can make you and your work seem less competent and trustworthy, all because of the subtle judgments deadlines trigger in other people. <h2>The deadly deadline dilemma</h2>Previous studies have focused on how deadlines affect employees’ productivity and stress levels, but lead researcher Sam Maglio’s team wanted to know how missing a deadline changes an outsider’s perception. To test this, the researchers conducted 18 different experiments with thousands of people, from managers and HR professionals to everyday folks, evaluating a wide range of creative and professional work. In the test, participants saw the same exact work samples — like photography, product pitches, news articles, and art — but they were told it was submitted either early, on time, or late. And guess what? The late submissions were consistently rated as lower quality, despite being identical to those submitted on time. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114883482" title="We heard from over 750 people who have recently struggled to find work. Here are their biggest frustrations with getting hired." mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Maglio explains, “Everyone saw the exact same art contest entry, school submission, or business proposal, but they couldn’t help but use their knowledge of when it came in to guide their evaluation of how good it was.” In other words, once people knew something was late, it was hard not to think less of it. <h2>Early birds don’t really get extra credit, but late birds do lose points</h2>Interestingly, turning in work early didn’t seem to earn extra praise. Evaluators ranked work that came in early and on time as equally good, which means there’s no major boost for those overachievers who submit work ahead of the deadline. But the real problem comes if you’re late — even by a little. In fact, it didn’t matter if the work was one day or one week late; the hit to quality ratings was the same. Late submissions were rated as poorly as work that objectively missed the mark, like not meeting word counts. And it turns out that advance warning doesn’t do much to soften the blow — one missed deadline still chipped away at the evaluator’s view of the employee’s competence and integrity, even if they were usually punctual. But here’s where it gets even trickier: evaluators didn’t just judge the work as poorer in quality — they also saw the latecomer as less reliable and were less likely to consider them for future tasks. And that’s with peers evaluating peers, so it didn’t matter if a boss or manager had set the deadline — missing it still left a mark. <h2>Let your manager know!</h2>Luckily, not all hope is lost for late submitters. Maglio’s team found that the reason behind a missed deadline actually mattered. If the delay was due to uncontrollable events — like jury duty or a medical emergency — people cut the submitter more slack. The same was true if the deadline was a “soft” one rather than a hard cutoff, or if the work wasn’t particularly critical. “Communication around deadlines is vital. If it’s a hard, and not a soft, deadline, you as the manager should let your employees know,” Maglio explained. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know.” The findings of this study have been published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and can be accessed <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.obhdp.2024.104365">here</a>.

The deadly landslides in Kerala's ecologically fragile Wayanad district were triggered by a heavy burst of rainfall, made 10 per cent heavier by <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword>, according to a new rapid attribution study by a global team of scientists. Researchers from India, Sweden, the US and the UK warned that such events will become more common as the climate continues to warm. To measure the impact of human-caused climate change, the scientists from the <keyword id="12008149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Weather-Attribution" source="Orion">World Weather Attribution</keyword> (WWA) group analysed climate models with high enough resolution to accurately reflect rainfall in the relatively small study area. The models indicated that the intensity of rainfall has increased by 10 per cent due to climate change, they said. The models also predict a further four per cent increase in rainfall intensity if the average <keyword id="21951013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-temperature" source="keywords">global temperature</keyword> rises by two degrees Celsius compared to the 1850-1900 average. The scientists, however, said there is a "high level of uncertainty" in the model results as the study area is small and mountainous with complex rainfall-climate dynamics. Having said that, the increase in heavy one-day rainfall events aligns with a growing body of scientific evidence on extreme rainfall in a warming world, including in India, and the understanding that a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier downpours. According to scientists, the atmosphere's capacity to hold moisture increases by about 7 per cent for every one-degree Celsius rise in global temperature. The Earth's global surface temperature has already increased by around 1.3 degrees Celsius due to the rapidly rising concentration of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane. Scientists say this is the reason behind worsening <keyword id="19912530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-weather-events" source="keywords">extreme weather events</keyword>, such as droughts, heat waves and floods worldwide. The WWA scientists said that while the relationship between land cover, land use changes and landslide risk in Wayanad is not fully clear from existing studies, factors, such as quarrying for building materials and a 62 per cent reduction in forest cover may have increased the slopes' susceptibility to landslides during heavy rainfall. Other researchers have also linked the <keyword id="22597176" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wayanad-landslides" source="keywords">Wayanad landslides</keyword> to a combination of forest cover loss, mining in fragile terrain and prolonged rain followed by heavy precipitation. S Abhilash, the director of the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), had earlier told PTI that the warming of the Arabian Sea is leading to the formation of deep cloud systems, resulting in extremely heavy rainfall in Kerala in a short period and increasing the risk of landslides. "Our research found that the southeast Arabian Sea is becoming warmer, causing the atmosphere above Kerala to become thermodynamically unstable. This instability is allowing the formation of deep clouds," he had said. According to the landslide atlas released by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre last year, 10 out of the top 30 landslide-prone districts in India are in Kerala, with Wayanad ranked at the 13th spot. A study published by Springer in 2021 said all landslide hotspots in Kerala are in the Western Ghats region and are concentrated in Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. It said about 59 per cent of total landslides in Kerala have occurred in plantation areas. A 2022 study on depleting forest cover in Wayanad showed that 62 per cent of forests in the district disappeared between 1950 and 2018, while plantation cover rose by around 1,800 per cent.

Perth: (The Conversation) Last week, three tiny Australian satellites from Curtin University's <keyword id="23932163" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binar-Space-Program" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Binar Space Program" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Binar Space Program">Binar Space Program</keyword> burned up in Earth's atmosphere. That was always going to happen. In fact, Binar means "fireball" in the Noongar language of the First Nations people of Perth. When a satellite is in low Earth orbit (2,000km or less), it experiences orbital decay as it drags closer and closer to the surface, eventually burning up. But these cube satellites (<keyword id="21533654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CubeSats" source="keywords">CubeSats</keyword>), known as Binar-2, 3 and 4, entered the atmosphere much sooner than originally planned. They only lasted for two months - a third of what was expected. This significantly reduced valuable time for science and testing new systems. The reason for their untimely demise? Our Sun has kicked into high gear, and the Binar satellites are far from the only casualty. Recent high <keyword id="20792842" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Solar-activity" source="keywords">solar activity</keyword> has been causing an unexpected headache for satellite operators in the last few years, and it's only increasing. <h2>Why is the Sun so active? </h2> Solar activity includes phenomena such as sunspots, solar flares and solar wind - the stream of charged particles that flows toward Earth. This activity is a product of the Sun's ever-changing magnetic field, and approximately every 11 years, it completely flips. At the midpoint of this cycle, solar activity is at its highest. While this cycle is known, specific solar activity is challenging to predict - the dynamics are complex and solar forecasting is in its infancy. In the last few months, indicators of solar activity were more than one and a half times higher than predictions for this point in the current cycle, labelled <keyword id="22712826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-cycle-25" source="keywords">solar cycle 25</keyword>. <h2>The impact of <keyword id="20087207" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-weather" source="keywords">space weather</keyword> </h2> Space weather refers to the environmental effects that originate from outside our atmosphere (mostly the Sun). It affects us on Earth in a variety of noticeable and unnoticeable ways. The most obvious is the presence of auroras. In the past few months, auroras have been visible far more intensely and closer to the equator than in the last two decades. This is a direct result of the increased solar activity. Space weather, and solar activity in particular, also creates additional challenges for satellites and satellite operators. Higher solar activity means more solar flares and stronger solar wind - resulting in a higher flux of charged particles that can damage or disrupt electrical components on satellites. It also means an increase in ionising radiation, resulting in a higher dose for astronauts and pilots, and potential disruptions to long-distance radio communications. But for satellites in low Earth orbit, the most consistent effect of solar activity is that the extra energy gets absorbed into the outer atmosphere, causing it to balloon outward. As a result, all satellites less than 1,000km from Earth experience a significant increase in <keyword id="23473319" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atmospheric-drag" source="keywords">atmospheric drag</keyword>. This is a force that disrupts their orbit and causes them to fall towards the planet's surface. Notable satellites in this region include the International Space Station and the Starlink constellation. These satellites have thrusters to counteract this effect, but these corrections can be expensive. Low Earth orbit also contains many university satellites, such as the Binar CubeSats. Cube satellites are rarely equipped with tools that can adjust their altitude, so they're entirely at the mercy of space weather. <h2>What happened to Binar? </h2> The Binar Space Program is a satellite research program operating out of Curtin University. It aims to advance our understanding of the Solar System and lower the barrier for operating in space. The program began operations with its first satellite, Binar-1, in September 2021. This was less than a year into solar cycle 25 when solar activity was relatively low. In these conditions, the ten-centimetre cube satellite started at an altitude of 420km and survived a full 364 days in orbit. The program's follow-up mission - Binar-2, 3, and 4 - were three equally sized CubeSats. However, they were expected to last approximately six months owing to the extra surface area from new deployable solar arrays and a forecast increase in solar activity. Instead, they only made it to two months before burning up. While cube satellite missions are relatively cheap, the premature ending of a mission will always be costly. This is even more true for commercial satellites, highlighting the need for more accurate space weather forecasting. The good news is the Sun will calm down again. Despite the current unexpectedly high solar activity, it will likely slow down by 2026, and is expected to return to a solar minimum in 2030. While this was not an explicit goal of the mission, the Binar Space Program has now poignantly demonstrated the dramatic effects of solar activity on space operations. While the untimely loss of Binar-2, 3 and 4 was unfortunate, work has already begun on future missions. They are expected to launch into far more forgiving space weather. (The Conversation).

These events alter the family structure, change roles, and modify interactions among family members, impacting the entrepreneur's ability to manage their business effectively. This research was conducted by ECU's Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Pi-Shen Seet, in collaboration with Associate Professor Wee-Liang Tan from the Singapore Management University. It utilised panel data from the HILDA survey, commissioned by the Australian government and administered by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne. Therefore, expect the status quo, he said.In scenario two, former president Donald Trump wins, but with a divided Congress. This would limit his ability to cut taxes for corporations and households. Therefore, he will likely focus his efforts on foreign policy, meaning everything linked to trade restrictions and tariffs could be implemented sooner than expected, Barraud said. The outcome would hurt global growth. In the short term, it would be neutral on US GDP. However, over the long run, as countries retaliate, this could backfire and slow the US economy.The third scenario is a Trump win with a Republican sweep, which Barraud believes is the most likely outcome. He expects Republicans to take the Senate; it's the House that could be a toss-up.If Trump does gain a majority, it would enable him to implement tax cuts for corporations and households. It may also cause him to focus more on domestic rather than foreign policy. In the short term, it would have a positive impact on US economic growth, creating a GDP boost in 2025 between 2.1% and 2.3%, he said.However, there's a bigger problem: Barraud's heavy-weight clients, which include big banks, hedge funds, and pension funds, are increasingly asking him about the trajectory of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76S3iMfcZE8">ballooning US deficit</a>. At the center of that concern is how big the deficit can get if Trump is elected and implements tax cuts resulting in US revenue shortfalls and how it could impact the 10-year.For that, he has a few modeled projections. In the case of a Trump win, he expects an initial shock jump on the 10-year yield to at least 4.5% based on where yields are today, near 4.23%. If he doesn't get a majority in Congress, then longer term, the yield could move an additional 15 basis points to 4.35%, again based on where yields are today. If there's a Republican sweep, then it would be followed by a gradual move up to 5% as investors seek a higher risk premium. This would be especially the case if he cuts immigration in a healthy labor market, causing further inflation.The 10-year yield last traded at 5% a year ago and in 2007 before then. If Harris wins with a dividend Congress, yields could drop further from where they are, he said. This is because the market has already priced in a Republican win. So firstly, it would correct down, he added.But what makes Barraud so sure about his predictions, even when his track record is taken into account? His secret sauce isn't in his personal opinion or high-level perspective. When asked "why" something is expected to shift, he laughs and says it's the model's output.Like a quant trader, Barraud's calculations are built on a three-step methodology that involves collecting the latest and greatest economic, financial, and satellite data, determining key signals based on backtests, and then merging input from additional models to challenge the projections, expose risks, and tighten output. This time, election forecasting includes monitoring multiple poll-betting markets with the highest volume of users to gauge election outcomes.
