Bindra said mental health directly influences overall <keyword id="19896695" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="well-being" source="keywords">well-being</keyword> of an athlete and sports administrators also share equal responsibility in it. "It's an area where there is work in progress - we all acknowledge that. We are a sporting ecosystem which is developing. It is slowly maturing," he said during a virtual interaction organised by <keyword id="21556305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mpower" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Mpower" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Mpower">Mpower</keyword> to launch AMP: A Sports Psychology Division to Elevate Athlete Performance. "This is an aspect that not just from a shooting athlete's point of view, but across the board, which needs to be prioritised. It is something which has a direct influence on the performance of the athlete. "It has a direct influence on the well-being of an athlete. <keyword id="22977441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sports-organisations" source="keywords">Sports organisations</keyword> and everybody involved in governance has to also ensure that our athletes perform well, but their well-being is of equal importance," he added. Bindra highlighted the presence of a mental health expert with the Indian contingent in Paris <keyword id="19933819" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="olympics" source="keywords">Olympics</keyword> as a step in the right direction. "We've seen progress made even during the Olympics in Paris. It was the first time there was a mental health expert who was with the team. There (also) was somebody for sleep," he said. "There are things that are happening. But we need to keep working with intensity to make sure that this perpetuates down to the grassroot level," he added. Bindra rejected the notion that athletes today are "softer" than those in the past. "I completely disagree. If that is the notion to be believed, then the softer ones are winning more than the tougher ones because that's what our results and our history tell us," he said. Bindra revealed how a meditation course, while planning to quit shooting, helped him find "love for the process" after winning the Olympic gold in 2008. "When I did win that gold medal at the Olympics, my energy was completely drained in the sense that I was physically, emotionally (and) mentally drained. It also required a period of time to just let go and then to recharge my batteries and that wasn't easy," he said. "I decided to go on a vipassana meditation course and it was interesting because I was wanting to actually leave the sport and move on to the next calling. That was my primary drive, to find my new calling." "I had to meditate for eight nine hours a day in complete silence for 10 days and all I did in that course was to think back to my sport and think back to how I loved the process of what I was doing," he said. Bindra said he was guilty of not realising his full potential since he judged himself on outcomes of tournaments. "For far too long, perhaps, I too was guilty in putting myself worth to wear my name, equating myself worth to where my name would appear on the ranking list of a sports competition and that was very silly," he said. "I became an Olympic champion, (a) world champion, I won many many championships but I failed in achieving my fullest and truest potential and now that I have a chance to look back I would attribute that failure to this lack of balance that I had in my life as an athlete. "I did not humanise my effort enough and I think that was while it helped me achieve goals it didn't help me get to my very best ability," he added.

We were both working from home, and aside from our daily jogs together, we were slouching in our respective work corners for hours.Suddenly, more and more of my coworkers were towering in their Zoom calls. We made small talk about how our new standing desks helped with our posture and prevented us from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-tried-being-more-active-at-work-was-less-productive-2024-8">sitting all day</a>.The trend hasn't died down. The market-research firm Global Market Insights estimated that the standing-desk market was valued at $7.8 billion in 2023 and could increase by 5.5% annually over the next decade. Top retailers like Autonomous, FlexiSpot, and Uplift generate millions of dollars in revenue each year. In its branding materials, Autonomous suggests that "by promoting movement, these desks help you stay active and prevent pain."But after a while, instead of hitting the button to elevate my desk, I found myself sitting all day after my morning workout. While some of my colleagues <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-things-that-happened-after-i-stood-for-3-hours-a-day">felt more energized standing at their desks</a> for three hours, I did not.A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://academic.oup.com/ije/article/53/6/dyae136/7822310">study</a> published on Thursday confronted my conundrum. Ultimately, it suggests that if you're using a standing desk to feel more active and boost your health, the trick is to actually use it to move more, frequently standing and sitting.Using data from more than 80,000 adults in the UK, the researchers found that simply standing didn't necessarily help get people's blood circulating. They also suggest that standing all day — without moving around — may increase the risk of circulatory issues.<h2 id="25df6fac-c6ed-45a7-ab87-bff83d4930d0">Sitting or standing for over 2 hours may not be good for health</h2>The team, led by researchers at the University of Sydney, studied data on 83,013 adults in the UK Biobank, a large database with information about people's genetics, lifestyle, and health. The participants wore accelerometer devices on their wrists to track their movements for one week.The authors concluded that sitting for 10 to 12 hours a day was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and orthostatic circulatory disease, such as varicose veins.Standing for two hours a day wasn't associated with a reduced risk of cardiac conditions like heart failure, stroke, or heart disease — it didn't seem to have much of an effect on cardiovascular health.The study did find that standing for two hours straight was associated with a higher risk of orthostatic circulatory disease, increasing by 11% every additional 30 minutes. The authors suggested that standing for too long every day could lead to long-term issues with blood circulation, such as venous ulcers and swollen veins.<h2 id="9b8e299b-9168-4df9-be6f-5275cf2ba174">It's best to move throughout the day</h2>Desks that let you switch between standing and sitting, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/home/best-standing-desk-converter">standing-desk converters</a>, can help you change up how you work without committing to one position all day. And what happens to those who try to oppose this new culture? They get schooled on the internet, of course. In a recent incident, a manager took to X (earlier called Twitter) and shared how one of his Gen Z employees took a one-week vacation to the mountains after going through a breakup. However, contrary to his expectation, various X users started accusing him of trivialising mental health issues by such statements. Read on to know what exactly happened. <h2>"He had a breakup" </h2> The man's tweet read, "One of my Gen z team members suddenly declared 1 week leave. It was a critical time of the project so I tried to reason. He did not budge. The leave was because he had a breakup and he wanted to go to the mountains to forget the breakup." When a user commented that it is better to give people leaves than deadlines, the manager replied, "Believe me it was one way communication. I had to deal with the repercussions on project." Several other tweets followed that sided with the Gen Z employee. "So according to you, mental health is nothing," a user wrote while another commented, "That’s a perfect reason to declare leave. Business is business, will go on as will other things." <div type="image" title="google (27)" msid="115042080" hostid="261" sizebytes="295800"></div> <h2>"Gen Z does things differently" </h2> The man also clarified in one of the tweets that he didn't fire the Gen Z employee and even promoted him for his good work. He wrote, "Mate. No need to assume the worst. The guy is still in my team and has even been promoted for his good work. I was just stating how gen z’s are doing things differently." While most users schooled the manager, there were some who supported him as well. A user wrote, "I'm a younger Millennial &amp; I’m appalled by the lack of respect so many of my peers have for professors (I finished school late; many were ten years younger). It’s not much for older generations who GIVE these opportunities to expect a little bit of gratitude &amp; deference." In a similar incident, another company's manager's tweet went viral in which he shared a screenshot of how his Gen Z employee notified him that he will be on leave for a week. The short and crisp leave application email read, "I will be on leave till November 8, 2024. Bye."
