New Delhi, Nov 15 () Essar Ports on Friday said it has completed work on a passenger ferry terminal at Hazira, paving the way for cruise-based service between Surat and Mumbai.
 The terminal has been built in record eight months' time, it added.
 "Essar Bulk Terminal Ltd (EBTL), a part of Essar Ports...has completed work on the Passenger Ferry Terminal that has paved the way for a cruise-based passenger ferry service, commencing today, between Hazira Port in Surat and Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai. The Hazira-based terminal will also lead to ferry services being offered on other routes in the future," Essar Ports said in a statement.
 Phase I of the terminal project will focus on the movement of passengers between Hazira in Surat and Mumbai. The company said it plans to extend the service to other coastal locations in Gujarat.
 "The ferry service will be a huge boost to tourism in Gujarat. We look forward to contributing to similar projects that will help unleash the tremendous potential of coastal transport in India by using the country's extensive network of inland waterways," said Rajiv Agarwal, MD and CEO, Essar Ports.
 The company said the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) had given its permission to EBTL to develop and operate a passenger ferry terminal at Hazira, where the company also operates a 50 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) dry bulk cargo terminal.
 "We are proud to have commissioned the project in record time to pave the way for the launch of this revolutionary ferry service," said Subhas Das, CEO, EBTL.

New Delhi, Mar 3 () ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India on Tuesday said it has completed the acquisition of 500 Mega Watt (MW) Bhander power plant in Hazira, Gujarat.Bhander plant, which was commissioned in 2006 and commenced commercial operations in 2008, was purchased by AM/NS India under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Securities Interest (SARFAESI) Act, the company said in a statement.It has acquired Bhander Power Plant from Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company."ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Bhander Power Plant in Hazira. Bhander, a natural gas-based thermal plant with an installed capacity of 500 MW, will remain captive to AM/NS India's steel manufacturing operations at Hazira," it said. Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel signs ₹19,000 crore deal to buy Essar's port and power assets

New Delhi, Mar 19 () Global steel major ArcelorMittal on Thursday announced plans of reducing productions in Europe to ensure wellbeing of employees amid the spread of deadly coronavirus in the continent.The outbreak has impacted several European countries in which ArcelorMittal operates, the company said in a statement."Given the extent of the outbreak, the health and safety implications, and particularly the impact it is having on several European countries in which ArcelorMittal operates, the company is taking steps to reduce production from its European operations to ensure the wellbeing of our employees is maintained and that production is aligned with demand," it said.The statement issued by ArcelorMittal did not have any mention of the steel plant in Hazira, India but said at all global operations, the company is following government and WHO's advice and guidelines in order to protect employees and prevent the spread of the infection.The Hazira plant in Gujarat is owned by JV firm ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS), in which ArcelorMittal has 60 per cent stake and the rest 40 per cent is owned by its Japan-based partner Nippon Steel Corporation (Nippon Steel).ArcelorMittal further said it takes the risks associated with the coronavirus outbreak very seriously and the safety and wellbeing of its employees is of paramount importance."We will continue to monitor the evolution of the coronavirus in each of our operating markets and take decisions accordingly to ensure the wellbeing of our employees and our ability to meet customer demand," it said. Coronavirus impact: ArcelorMittal plans to cut production in Europe

New Delhi, Jan 30 () Essar Ports on Thursday reported 20 per cent growth in cargo volumes across four of its terminals at 14.02 million tonnes (MT) for the quarter ended December 2019.
The company handled 11.67 million tonnes in the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal, Essar Ports said in a statement. 
 "Essar Ports business... has registered a 20.09 per cent growth in cargo volumes in the third quarter of the current financial year with a throughput of 14.02 million tonnes (MT)," it said.
 Significant boost in hinterland industry consumption has been the key growth driver, Essar Ports MD and CEO Rajiv Agarwal said.
 "Largely the growth has been on account of our terminals in Salaya (west coast) and Vizag Port (east coast). Our continuous focus on increasing the capacity of handling through upgradation and mechanisation and driving operational efficiencies, has helped in recording strong growth," he said.
 The company, he said, is committed to deliver world-class services and its focus is to ensure seamless continuity in services on a sustainable basis.
 "Last month, the Hazira terminal handled one of the highest levels of cargo (more than 2 million tonnes)...With modular expansions undertaken at Hazira terminal, it is equipped to handle increased volumes for its existing customers," the company said. SID ANS

Reliance to set up carbon fibre facility in Gujarat as Ambani promises 'green growth'

New Delhi, Mar 17 () The Luxembourg-based parent firm of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has tied up USD 5.146 billion (around Rs 38,000 crore) from a consortium of lenders to refinance the debt taken by the Indian joint venture arm for acquiring Essar Group's steel plant at Hazira in Gujarat, ArcelorMittal said on Tuesday. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (formerly Essar Steel) is a 60:40 joint venture between L N Mittal-owned ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corporation (Nippon Steel) which acquired the Hazira steel plant through an insolvency process last year. The resolution plan, which was approved for AMNS India, was of Rs 42,785 crore. The plan included a further Rs 8,000 crore capital injection."AMNS Luxembourg Holding S A (AMNS), the parent company of the AMNS India joint venture between Nippon Steel Corporation (Nippon Steel) and ArcelorMittal, entered into a USD 5.146 billion ten-year term loan agreement with Japan Bank for International Cooperation, MUFG Bank, Ltd, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mizuho Bank Europe N.V. and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited (London Branch)," ArcelorMittal said in a statement. The proceeds of the loan, it said, will be used to refinance in full the amounts borrowed by AMNS in connection with the acquisition of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Limited (formerly known as Essar Steel India Limited), "including the amounts borrowed under the USD 7 billion bridge term facilities agreement guaranteed by ArcelorMittal", it said. AMNS India parent signs USD 5 bn term loan to refinance Essar Steel acquisition

New Delhi, India's largest gas firm GAIL is imitating billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd in planning to import ethane from the US to replace natural gas and naphtha as feedstock at its petrochemical plants. "In a bid towards diversification of the feedstock, GAIL is looking to import ethane from ethane-surplus countries with matured export terminal infrastructure through water borne transportation to India and transport it further through GAIL's pipeline systems to demand centres," the company said in a tender document. It sought quotes to hire a very large ethane carrier (VLEC) for 20 years starting mid-2026 for importing ethane from the US. The ship with capacity of 80,000 to 99,000 cubic metres is targeted to take deliveries from US ports of Marcus Hook, Nederland, Morgan's Point or Beaumont and deliver ethane at Dahej or Hazira in Gujarat or Dabhol in Maharashtra. GAIL has a petrochemical plant at Pata, near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, and is also looking to set up another unit at Usar in Maharashtra. The company had to cut down on run rate at Pata after the government diverted gas supplies from the plant to city gas suppliers. This led to its profitability being impacted and so now the company is looking to supplement the feedstock with ethane. Reliance had in 2014 announced ethane plans in 2014 and started importing the feedstock from the US in 2017. It is importing 1.6 million tonnes per annum of ethane and is using six VLECs for transporting it to India. With ethane replacing propane and naphtha used in ethylene production, Reliance is estimated to have saved about USD 450 million annually. Reliance used 2.5 million tonnes a year of naphtha as feedstock in petrochemical crackers and ethane reduced its use by 5,00,000 tonnes, which now could be exported. Ethane is expected to be produced in large volumes in North America due to the shale gas revolution, which has generated an abundance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It is primarily used as petrochemical feedstock to produce ethylene by steam cracking. Ethylene is the starting material for making a wide range of products -- from packaging films, wire coatings, and squeeze bottles as well as plastics and synthetic rubber. Reliance uses ethane at its crackers in Dahej and Hazira in Gujarat and Nagothane in Maharashtra. GAIL in the tender said it is looking at co-transportation of ethane and LNG through the same vessel loaded in separate compartments. "Bidders may indicate whether the vessel offered for time-charter is compatible for part loading of ethane and LNG. In case of co-transportation the primary and secondary fuel options may necessarily be indicated," GAIL said. GAIL said the 20 year charter hire agreement can be extended by a further 5 years. Last date for submission of an expression of interest (EoI) for offering VLECs is February 25.

New Delhi, Mar 25 () With the unprecedented nationwide lockdown shutting down factories, ONGC has been forced to cut natural gas production by up to one-tenth as customers refused to take supplies because of business disruption.Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), which produced 64.5 million standard cubic meters of gas per day till earlier this week, has reduced the flow to 59.8 mmscmd on Wednesday, and will further cut by another 3 mmscmd on Thursday, sources aware of the development said.The company has received requests from customers for reduction in gas supplies of around 7.7 mmscmd.Besides this, another 4-5 mmscmd supply reduction requests have been lodged with the gas transporter GAIL.The sources said these customers are largely small companies whose business has been completely shut because of the lockdown, and city gas distributors who have seen volumes vanish after CNG vehicles went off-road.In the most far-reaching measure undertaken by any government to check the spread of coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening announced a three-week-long nationwide lockdown. The lockdown meant offices and factories, barring those involved in essential supplies business, are shut and people asked to stay at home.So far, 562 persons are reported to have infected with the virus and as many as 9 killed.Some states like the national capital Delhi had last week declared lockdown and now this has been extended nationwide.While factories across sectors have been shut down following the lockdowns, the ones seeking stoppage or reduction in gas intake are mostly in the Gujarat region.Out of the 7.7 mmscmd gas reduction request received by ONGC, 6 mmscmd has come from the Hazira region, the sources said, adding the remaining reduction was sought by factories in Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas.Besides, GAIL has been piled with requests for cut in supplies for another 4-5 mmscmd along its Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur pipeline.It is the principal transporter of natural gas in India and also ships gas produced by ONGC.GAIL would accommodate 4-5 mmscmd of reduction by cutting the use of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel sourced from fields other than of ONGC, they said.Gas is used as a fuel in a variety of industries - from glass to fertilizer plants. Large factories such as fertilizer plants continue to use gas as they have been classified in essential commodities.The demand for gas has also been hit by all vehicles, barring ones used by law enforcement agencies and that used in maintaining essential supplies, going off-road. This meant vehicles run on compressed natural gas (CNG) too have gone off-road in cities ranging from Delhi to Mumbai to Ahmedabad.Lesser CNG vehicles meant lesser need of gas and so city gas distributors too have sought a reduction in the volumes they used to take from GAIL/ONGC, the sources said.Indraprastha Gas Ltd, the company that retails CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas to households in the national capital and adjoining cities, has already shut two-third of its CNG dispensing pumps in view of the demand constraints.The sources said more factories and businesses are likely to be impacted by the shutdown in the coming days. Business has been slow at a Larsen &amp; Toubro Ltd. factory in India that makes parts for nuclear power plants. The Mumbai-based construction company opened the plant in 2012, hoping to profit from government plans to build more reactors in a country where more than 200 million people lack access to electricity. But most of the projects have gone nowhere, and L&amp;T's facility in Hazira is running at one-fifth of capacity. "That's not the best use of resources,, says Senior Vice President Y.S. Trivedi. L&amp;T's factory could soon be humming. On June 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President <keyword id="43440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vladimir-Putin">Vladimir Putin</keyword> agreed that the two countries would work together to expand India's largest nuclear power station. In mid-May, Modi's cabinapproved a plan to add 10 Indian-made reactors with a combined output of 7,000 megawatts, roughly double the country's current nuclear capacity. In his June 1 announcement that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris agreement, Trump said the deal favored India and China. India has 22 reactors, almost all designed by state-owned Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd. (NPCIL) and built by companies such as L&amp;T. "Our domestically designed reactors are the core of our nuclear strategy,, says <keyword id="51931" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="atomic-energy">Atomic Energy</keyword> Secretary Sekhar Basu. "The foreign reactors are add-ons., Government boosterism aside, India is actually a laggard in nuclear technology. World powers banned the country from importing nuclear fuel and technology for civilian purposes for more than three decades as punishment for testing a nuclear weapon in 1974. Although the U.S. lifted the prohibition in 2006, NPCIL is still playing catch-up. Its reactors have 30 percent less capacity than designs from foreign companies and use older, simpler technology. This isn't India's first nuclear push. "Targets have been set, and they've always been missed,, says M.V. Ramana, professor at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia. "They've essentially built almost nothing., One obstacle is a 2010 law that holds companies liable in the event of a nuclear accident. General Electric Co. To improve India's nuclear know-how, Modi could turn to China for help. But that's an unlikely prospect, says Ramana; the two countries fought a war in the early 1960s and still have unresolved border disputes. That leaves Russia's Rosatom Corp., which designed the reactors for <keyword id="54863" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="KUDANKULAM">Kudankulam</keyword> Nuclear Power Plant, India's largest. Because it's state-owned, Rosatom is less likely to be spooked by India's liability law, passed after work on Kudankulam began in 2002. "There may be no other option besides Russian vendors at this point,, says Vipin Narang, an associate professor of political science at MIT. India's focus on nuclear power is misguided, regardless of whether the reactors are imported or local, says Tim Buckley, an Asia expert at the Cleveland-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. "It's absolutely bizarre that they would bother,, he says, arguing that nuclear power can't compete against lower-cost renewable alternatives such as wind and solar, which now account for close to 16 percent of India's power capacity. - High average speed of freight trains 
- Cabinet nod to creation of Joint ventures with State government for undertaking rail based projects 
-Contracts worth Rs. 24,000 Cr awarded against Rs.13,000 Cr worth of contacts in last 6 years 
-Key customer managers to liaison with major freight stakeholders 
-East-West freight corridor may be extended by 5 km 
- At least 10 goods sheds will be developed by TransLoc in 2016-2017. Proposed to develop rail side logistics parks &amp; warehouses. It would be created in PPP mode to bring the required efficiency and investment but also help attract greater traffic to Railways. 
- Proposal inviting FM radio stations to provide train borne entertainment by installing PA systems in the trains 
- In partnership with Google, 100 railway stations in India to get access to free WiFi by the end of this year and 400 stations by the end of 2017.

<keyword id="1388180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shell-PLC">Shell Plc</keyword> is mulling to re-enter the upstream business in India, if the government offers a stable policy and open acreage licence to explorers. 
 
The Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s re-entry may boost India’s oil and gas production, which has been stagnant for years. 
 
"We would continue to look at upstream opportunities in India," Harry Brekelmans, projects &amp; technology director and a member of the top executive committee at Shell, told Economic Times, adding, “at the moment, we have not been able to see anything that is attractive enough and will continue to look at how policies develop.” 
 
India’s oil and gas production has been stagnant for years, forcing the country to import nearly 80% of its crude oil requirement. Many power plants are idle or underutilised and the government is making all efforts to lure foreign investors to develop its hydrocarbon reserves. 
 
ET reported that the government is working on a new oil and gas exploration policy that will replace the 16-year-old New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP), which has guided nine rounds of auction so far. 
 
"We are quite interested in the new policy which suggests that the open acreage licence OLAP (may be offered) and we think that may give us a different opportunity to look," Yasmine Hilton, chairman of Shell Companies in India, told ET. 
 
ET further reported that Shell has no particular preference for the fiscal regime to be followed in exploration and production as the company works across the globe under different contractual terms. 
 
"We can work in any regime as long as there is stability in that regime. Once you enter an agreement, it's a long-term agreement, so you need stability across that, we don't want change over that period," Hilton added. 
 
Shell is bullish on India's gas market and is looking to expand its capacity at Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Hazira, Gujarat. 
 
"We are currently in discussions to expand that further, that's subject to the joint venture itself but we are clearly keen and supportive of these plans," Brekelmans told 
ET. The company also has plans to set up a floating LNG terminal at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
