From a brand that was first brought into existence to serve just one small neighborhood in Delhi (the upmarket Hauz Khas Village), it has now expanded its portfolio to seven different flavors of beer, with one new beer every week at its taprooms. The brand has also forayed into merchandizing. The last few years have seen Bira go on an impressive growth trajectory. It has grown at 150% CAGR from 2016-2021 and has grown by 2X compared to pre-Covid levels while tripling its market share in the last two years. And this is just the start of their story, shares Ankur Jain, Founder &amp; CEO, Bira 91, who started the company after being disappointed by the lack of good beer in India. “When we started out in 2015, our goal was to place our product in 30 bars out of the 50 in Hauz Khas Village (HKV). We launched with a wheat beer and lager, and only on tap, no bottles and no cans! Very quickly, we were able to bring our product to almost all bars in HKV. And interestingly, we immediately started gaining a lot of love and followers and consumers started switching from established brands like <keyword id="6360137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="Orion">Kingfisher</keyword>, <keyword id="81732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heineken" source="Orion">Heineken</keyword> and <keyword id="174607" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="carlsberg" source="Orion">Carlsberg</keyword> to Bira 91,” remembered Jain. Once he saw the kind of reception the beer got, Jain said they revised their ambition and started making a roadmap of taking the product to other parts of the city and slowly to other states. Fast forward 6 years, Bira is now one of the most visible homegrown beer brands with a loyal following. “Over the last 6-7 years, we've been very lucky to get immense love from our consumers, and a lot of support from our suppliers and investors. It's fair to say we've created a franchise with a semblance of scale. At this point, we're probably the largest consumer brand, not just the largest beer brand, that's emerged out of India in the last decade. This year, consumers will spend over Rs 2000 crore on Bira 91 products, which for a single brand, in an Indian context, is pretty large. And over the last 12-24 months, especially as the world's been infected by COVID and these unprecedented times, what's been really heartening to see is that we've actually doubled our volume, and tripled our market share, which means that consumers are making much more deliberate choices when they're picking up the beers they want to drink, and really want more value from the pint or can that they consume in the form of flavors, which has been our promised throughout,” explained Jain. Since alcohol brands are not really allowed to traditionally market their products, most brands have to go for surrogate marketing. However, Bira did things a little differently. “There were three things we did differently. Firstly, we completely focused on <keyword id="1777661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="draught-beer" source="Orion">draught beer</keyword>. We realized that there were very few bars in India that served beer on tap and we realized we could become leaders in the space. Today, we're the number one draught beer brand in the country, and it gave us the added advantage of being visible at the bar instead of being relegated to a refrigerator. Secondly, we really focused on the point of sale, which meant premium displays and encouraging people to try products through our events, activations and promotions. And thirdly, we really focused on digital. But it wasn’t only about social media. We wanted to use digital to solve consumer problems. For example, back in 2015 or 2016, one of our first campaigns was, we almost built a neighborhood guide with monkeys to tell people where to find Bira 91. We also partnered with Zomato and created the first branded keyword search wherein one could type Bira 91 near me and it would throw up a list of bars and restaurants where Bira 91 was being served,” shared Jain. The brand also came up with its first ever 360-degree campaign ‘Make Play With Flavors’. Explaining what it was all about, Jain said, “We have very cheekily called it Make Play with Flavors which is a pun on Make Way. Nobody wants to drink the same beers as their dads and that switchover is currently underway. We feel this generation wants a diversity of tastes and flavors in the products they consume. And therefore, the tagline make play with flavors.” The brand had also very quickly realized the potential that a merchandizing arm could hold and had launched it around 4-5 years back. In the last two years, the business has grown by about 3X and the company is constantly expanding on its offerings, which would also include a premium apparel collection. On where he thinks the next phase of growth for the brand will come from Jain said, “One of the things we are very focused on is innovation. We'll be launching more products next year than in the last five years combined. And people can expect a lot more flavors from us next year. Secondly, we are also expanding our taproom business. Currently, we have one taproom and we'll be expanding to potentially a couple of cities over the next 6-12 months. And the third area of growth for us will be essentially from going deeper into Bharath, taking our products to new states and even deeper into our existing states and making sure that our products are available in more stores.”

New Delhi, Jul 5 () Yes Bank will auction properties of Thapar Group's Avantha Holdings and Oscar Investments Ltd of Singh brothers alongside those of some individuals later this month to recover loan dues of over Rs 1,000 crore. The sale of immovable assets will take place through e-auction on various dates in July under the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act, 2002. In a sale notice to the public in general and in particular to Avantha Holdings Ltd (the borrower) and Avantha Realty (mortgager), Yes Bank said it took constructive possession of the property mortgaged to it on February 10, 2020 for recovery of Rs 548.30 crore. "All that office premises bearing Municipal No. B-14 to B-19 on the third (3rd) floor of B-wing of Shangrilla Apartment, Bund Garden Road, Pune - 411 001, admeasuring approx. about 123.56 sq. mtrs. Built-up area, bearing Survey No. 362, Hissa No,3/A and Hissa No. 4(pt), situated at 31 Bund Garden Road, Pune under the name of Shangrilla," the auction notice said describing the mortgaged assets. The loan amount is due since October 31, 2019, along with further interest and cost due to the secured creditor (Yes Bank) from the borrower and mortgager, Yes Bank said. Those interested can inspect the properties from July 10-23. The last date of submitting the earnest money deposit (EMD) is July 24, while the auction will take place on July 27, it said. Separately, it said notice is hereby given to the public in general and in particular to Oscar Investments Ltd (borrower) and RHC Holding Pvt. Ltd (mortgager) that immovable assets mortgaged to the bank will be sold on July 20, 2020 for recovery of Rs 465.29 crore which is due as on June 29, 2020. Yes Bank said the outstanding amounts have been calculated after adjusting monies recovered from sale of other securities. The properties mortgaged to Yes Bank are "Land &amp; building built on land admeasuring 12 Bighas out of Khasra No. 288 (4 Bighas 16 Biswas), Khasra No. 289 (4 Bighas 5 Biswas) and Khasra No. 290 (2 Bighas 19 Biswas) situated in the revenue estate of Village Gadaipur, Tehsil Hauz Khas, Mehrauli, New Delhi". The property will be open for inspection from July 6-17, while the last date to submit bid along with the EMD is July 18. The e-auction will take place on July 20, 2020. Oscar Investments Ltd is promoted by RHC Holding Private Limited (44.47 per cent), which is turn is promoted by Malvinder Mohan Singh and Shivinder Mohan Singh. Apart from this, the bank will also sell individual properties owned by certain borrowers from Ludhiana and Jaipur to recover dues of Rs 30.96 lakh and Rs 24.29 lakh, respectively, on July 20. In earlier auction notices, the bank had announced to sell properties owned by Essel Group firm, Essel Infraprojects, and SKIL Infra to recover dues of Rs 1,368.16 crore. While the auction for Essel Group properties will take place on July 8, SKIL Infra properties will go under the hammer on July 15. KPM RVK

Places That Ought To Be In Your Bucket list When You Visit The Metros In India

To understand the class division in India, a simple walk during the weekend through New Delhi’s Hauz Khas Village will suffice. This narrow lane is barely 400m long, but houses some of the most hip pubs, delis, resto-bars and lounges of Delhi. And in stark contrast, you will also find here sturdy, native ‘villagers’ who are sitting on their front yards smoking ‘hookah’ and passing comments about the changing Delhi. Don’t be fooled by their get-up. They are the landlords of the area. They may not gel with the young, urban and chic crowd thronging the pubs, but they are the locals, the natives. 
 Right now, India is at a crossroads. A new government has just been elected after years of <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> rule and the war cry of the <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (BJP), which swept the Lok Sabha polls this year, was ‘development.’ Prime Minister-elect <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had been the chief minister of Gujarat throughout the last decade and his chant of Vibrant Gujarat, showcasing how the state has developed under his governance, is largely considered the clincher that got him the top position in the recently concluded general elections. 
 
In layman’s terms, the BJP promised more economic freedom while the Congress ran with upliftment of the poor. But going by the Lok Sabha results, most people have favoured the former concept. A hundred rupees in one’s own pocket is better than Rs 10 in everyone’s pocket – this is the attitude that has won the day. Some call it greed while others may choose to call it competition. But what cannot be denied is – all this will not lessen the gap of income inequality across the country. 
 
Thomas Piketty, a professor from Paris School of Economics, has recently penned a book called Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Like many people who are somewhat critical of how the word ‘development’ is thrown around by politicians all over the world, Piketty, too, believes that development and economic growth, while being inherently positive attributes, can eventually lead to a situation where income inequality can become a devastating tool, especially if the growth is allowed to be exploited by the elite of the society. 
 
The situation in India 
While Piketty’s book was written after he gathered research material and data from over 20 countries since the Industrial Revolution, he concedes that “there are major problems with the measurement of income inequality in India.” According to him, “India’s income tax administration has almost given up compiling detailed income tax statistics, although detailed yearly reports called All-India Income Tax Statistics are available from 1922 to 2000. This lack of transparency is problematic because self-reported survey data on consumption and income is not satisfactory for the top part of the distribution and income tax data is a key additional source of information in every country.” This makes it even more difficult to map out the <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> growth distribution in India, spread across various income segments, classes and social groups. 
 
A different history 
Piketty also points out that inherited wealth is the problem area as that is a system where merit is not what is rewarded. Instead, it is the bloodline and family ties that matter. The French economist calls it patrimonial capitalism and it is something common in all countries all over the world. But in India, this patrimonial capitalism takes a giant leap, surpassing all other countries, thanks to some India-specific reasons. 
 
First of all, in nations such as the US and the UK, inherited wealth only created a class division. Yes, the division grew bigger with more wealth accumulated, but that was it. India, on the other hand, has another skeleton in its closet – caste divisions. Historically, only Brahmins (priests) and Kshatriyas (warriors) had access to whole, rounded education. The Vaishyas (traders) were only trained in their prescribed skills while the Shudras (untouchables) had to make do with the leftovers. In other words, they did not have access to any tool that could elevate them up the caste ladder. However, reformers in the 19th century did bring about some positive changes. Later, when India gained Independence and opted for democracy, it seemed everything should work out for the well being of everyone – at least that is what the Constitution has guaranteed. 
 
How globalisation backfired In the early 90s, the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> of the country opened its doors to the world. Subsequently, people with accumulated and/or inherited wealth made the most of it even though it is said that the middle class also flourished. But the growth of the 90s is now missing and the Indian middle class is steadily shrinking. While the upper middle class is busy accumulating what it can, the lower stratum is slipping deeper into poverty due to inflation. All this while, the elites are getting richer and all of a sudden, they have become the lenders but they are not spending as much as a vibrant middle class would. Piketty says that the top 1% in India owns 8-9% of the national income, which is significantly lesser than the US, but this does not account for inherited wealth. 
 
India has a pro-business government at the Centre now, which means some middle-class people will be getting richer. But in doing so, they will be making more money for the elites while the lower end will sink further into oblivion. The solution may lie in reforming the tax code, including income tax hike and new taxes on accumulated wealth, while that additional capital can easily fund basic necessities, such as food, housing, healthcare and education. Only then India will have the chance to grow into a superpower. Otherwise, the revolution is right around the corner.
