New Delhi, Edtech company Byju's founder <keyword id="19901244" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="byju-raveendran" source="keywords">Byju Raveendran</keyword> on Saturday refuted reports of being fired from the company, saying such rumours were greatly exaggerated and he remains at the helm. In an email sent to employees and accessed by IANS, <keyword id="19901244" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="byju-raveendran" source="keywords">Byju Raveendran</keyword> said that the management remains unchanged, the Board remains the same and the rights issue has "seen an overwhelming response." His reaction came a day after key shareholders in Byju's like <keyword id="20702977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prosus-nv" source="keywords">Prosus NV</keyword> and <keyword id="20124151" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="peak-xv-partners" source="keywords">Peak XV Partners</keyword> voted to oust him as CEO at the Extraordinary General Meeting (<keyword id="19966733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="egm" source="keywords">EGM</keyword>), saying that the stakeholders "unanimously passed all resolutions put forward for vote." In the email to staff, Byju Raveendran said that it was "business as usual" at the company. "Just as you can't change the rules of a game midway without agreement from all players, we can't alter how our company is run without following these strict guidelines. At the <keyword id="19966733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="egm" source="keywords">EGM</keyword>, a lot of these essential rules were violated. This means that whatever was decided in that meeting does not count, because it didn't stick to the established rules," he wrote. Byju Raveendran claimed that the EGM was convened without following the proper procedure set out by the law and the Company's Articles of Association. "Only 35 out of 170 shareholders (representing around 45 per cent of shareholding) voted in favour of the resolution. That in itself shows the very limited support that this irrelevant meeting received," said Byju's CEO. Additionally, he said the Karnataka High Court had granted interim relief, "clearly stating that any decisions made during the meeting would not be given eﬀect until resolution." He said that regardless of this "uncalled-for drama", the management was devoting its full attention to the company's operations. The EGM was called by select investors to oust Byju Raveendran from the company, which is facing regulatory hurdles amid a cash crunch. On Wednesday, the Karnataka High Court ordered that any resolutions, to be passed in the EGM, would not hold ground until the final hearing and disposition of the petition on March 13, filed by Think &amp; Learn Private Ltd, the parent company of Byju's.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs recently pulled up edtech firms during a meeting with them and self-regulatory organisation India Edtech Consortium (<keyword id="306435" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iec" source="Orion">IEC</keyword>) amid aggressive misselling of courses to parents. Trust me I am pushing my daughter to start learning coding, and do IIT JEE preparations with you guys, but she is just not willing to do so. Kids these days don't listen to their parents. She just wants to be an artist. So, please stop calling me to sell these plans/devices," Prashant <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword>, who is into business development and a consultant with a penchant for storytelling, posted on LinkedIn. His post led to a barrage of similar situation being faced by parents all over the country, who are fed by constant aggressive selling of courses by the edtech representatives. <keyword id="14487485" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="srikant-ganesh" source="Orion">Srikant Ganesh</keyword>, Vice President at Dentsu Creative India, posted that he can totally relate to Sharma's experience. They have a mind of their own and no one can push them into something they are not inclined towards. This false sense of FOMO being created by such brands should stop and so should the calls," Ganesh lamented. After the Centre took serious note of mis-selling of courses to parents by edtech firms, self-regulatory organisation IEC said it is committed to protecting consumer interest and has resolved 100 per cent complaints received till June. However, fresh complaints surfaced on social media platforms this month, indicating that the problem has not been addressed in totality. "This happened to me. The sales representatives of #Byju's need to be trained to handle a 'No'. I have personally experienced this when a representative called my wife and she said that we don't want to enroll. He kept calling and then I had to intervene. He kept insisting that your child had been registered on their site, so how could we say No! He didn't seem to understand and finally I had to explain to him by activating my desi side. I registered my complaint on their site but it was removed the next day," posted Dheeraj Grover, Senior Manager, HR, at VVDN Technologies. Thangarathnavel M., Head of Business Development-South Asia at German company Covestro, said on LinkedIn that he could fully relate to it too. "I had enrolled my son 2 years back but it was not much of any use. Few months back I started receiving calls from them again to enrol my son for the physical classes. But even after saying no, the calls never stopped. Once I gave a piece of my mind to one of the callers and asked him to share the mobile number of Mr. BYJU. Now the calls have stopped coming. Hope they stop this forever," he described his plight. Earlier this month, the Centre warned edtech companies against unfair trade practices. In a meeting with the IEC, Consumer Affairs Secretary, Rohit <keyword id="255172" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kumar-singh" source="Orion">Kumar Singh</keyword>, said that if self-regulation does not curb unfair trade practices, then stringent guidelines would be formulated for ensuring transparency. Edtech major BYJU'S on Wednesday announced several measures to bolster its <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> business, saying that its K-10 business, which includes Toppr, <keyword id="1573710" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meritnation" source="Orion">Meritnation</keyword>, <keyword id="192259" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tutorvista" source="Orion">TutorVista</keyword>, <keyword id="14957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="scholar" source="Orion">Scholar</keyword>, and HashLearn platforms, will now be consolidated as one business unit. To avoid redundancies and duplication of roles, the move will result in five per cent of its 50,000-strong workforce (about 2,500 people) being "rationalised across product, content, media, and technology teams in a phased manner", the company said in a statement. Aakash Educational Services and Great Learning will continue to function as separate organisations, the company said in a statement. "As a mature organisation that takes its responsibility towards investors and stakeholders seriously, we aim to ensure sustainable growth alongside strong revenue growth. These measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023," said Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business. At a group level, BYJU'S said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". Over the last three years, BYJU'S acquired multiple companies whose integration with its core business is now complete. BYJU'S said at the group level, it will continue to hire across all levels and will end this financial year as a net hirer. The company plans to hire a total of 10,000 more teachers in the coming year, adding to its current strength of 20,000 teachers. It said it is expanding its teams along with hiring senior leadership to further build operational strength. The company said there will also be re-targeting of the marketing budget towards more efficient growth. "Since significant brand awareness has been created in India over the past few years, there is a scope to optimise marketing budgets locally and prioritise spending to increase brand awareness in overseas markets," the company said. BYJU'S said it is also reinventing its sales model to focus more on inside sales, using video calling platforms which in turn will enhance customer experience and reduce operational costs. Multiple inside sales hubs will now be created across India from where BYJU'S sales associates will reach out to incoming leads through calls, email, and <keyword id="10296" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zoom" source="Orion">Zoom</keyword> meetings. Inside sales will lead to higher customer satisfaction and lower costs. "None of these measures will have any impact on our revenue run rate," said Mohit. After six stressful and tough months, the company's Co-founder Byju Raveendran recently said that "the worst is finally over" and there is only "growth ahead" as seen in the company's FY22 financial results, where it logged Rs 10,000 crore in gross revenues. With an aim to bridge this gap, BYJU’s launched its CSR initiative called ‘Education for All’ last year. So far, the EdTech giant has reached 3.4 million students and has now revised its vision to empower 10 million children, up from 5 million, by 2025. Under the initiative, BYJU’s has partnered with over 110 NGO partners and launched its program in 26 states, whereby its educational content is loaded onto the devices with free access for the students and the teachers. “Even pre-pandemic, there were about 13 million children out of school and 67% of these kids out of school are girls in the grade category of six to eight. Experts predict that the pandemic is likely to double this number. Now, in terms of the quality of education, the SSO report says that there are about 110 million children in India who do not receive good quality education, even though they're part of some base-level education or primary education level system. Education is a fundamental right of every child in India, as per the Constitution, but it's about the quality of education. It's also about the availability of teachers. So if you just look at the education sector in general, I think the problems are just plenty and the scale of them is something that I don't think a single organization like ours can actually address which is why we've taken the ecosystem approach. It is a mix of NGOs, the government, other corporates, everybody is going to contribute,” Mansi Kasliwal, VP - Social Initiatives, BYJU'S told Advertising and Media Insider citing various studies. As per UNICEF, only 24% of households in India had access to the internet pre-COVID and there is a large rural-urban and gender divide. With its EFA initiative, BYJU’s has been providing at-home school through a personal digital device. However, every child has different needs. Kasliwal told us how BYJU’s devices are supporting them in catching up on the learning they have missed. She said, “The needs are different in terms of the grade, their state board and language; these are the three basic things that we need to know about before giving out a course. This information comes to us from the NGO, and we are able to customize the program for each child. So each child gets a course that is aligned to their learning needs. Also, we understand that great competency is a real challenge on-ground. So a fifth-grader in one of these areas may actually not know addition and subtraction. Whereas for a regular child of fifth grade, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and everything has to be known. So before we begin a program, we find out where the learning gaps are built through bridge learning programs and then give them content. So there are multiple efforts that are being taken through aptitude tests, bridge learning programs, gap identification, assessment tests and then there’s teacher training.” BYJU’s film, which has been released to raise more awareness around the digital divide and its CSR initiative, was conceptualised and created by BYJU’S internal brand team. Panning and tilting across the scenic views of Uri in Kashmir to the panoramic white deserts of Kutch to the hinterlands of Sundarbans, the film is shot across Sonmarg, Jaisalmer, Alupuzzah etc for over 120 hours along with 1000+ beneficiary students. Talking about the film, Vineet Singh, VP- Brand and Creative Strategy, BYJU’S said, “An impactful story needs an impactful, even more, or a little bigger impactful way of communicating the story out and that's what we tried to do with this. So you will see a lot of content around that and we partnered with a few influencers.” The film’s music follows along with the unique rhythm of the mathematical ‘table of 2,’ and is rendered artfully by actor-singer Raghubir Yadav. The music, composed by Sneha Khanwalkar, aims to capture the innocence and hope of young children for a better tomorrow.
