The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has been allocated Rs 13,539 crore in the 2024-2025 budget, an increase of 37 per cent from the 2023-2024 revised estimates of Rs 9,853.32 crore. New Delhi, Nov 18 () Collecting agricultural data in a decentralised economy is a big challenge and there is a need to adopt new technologies like big data and artificial intelligence to get more scientific information for policy making, Chief Statistician Pravin Srivastava said on Monday.
To produce quality data, there is a need to look at how data is collected, he noted.
Addressing the global conference on agricultural statistics here, Srivastava said: "Even though agriculture contributes about 17 per cent to the country's GDP, almost 50 per cent of the workforce is dependent on agriculture. ...We have huge informal economy and measuring an informal economy is a big challenge that the statistical system faces".
The country's decentralised economy and statistical set up pose a challenge in developing and collecting data. The machinery in the state and central government is facing these challenges on a day-to-day basis, he said.
As the demand for traditional data continues to increase, there is a need to look at the respondent burden in terms of how data is collected, Srivastava said, adding that quality data is required as decisions are taken based on that information.
Srivastava, secretary in the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI), further said, "If you want to look at climate change and its impact on agriculture and farmers, we really need to look at getting data from non-inclusive methods using big data, artificial intelligence, and whatever new contemporary techniques coming. Adopt that and we can get more scientific information for policy making".
Echoing views, Niti Aayog member Ramesh Chand said India has produced some globally reputed statisticians and consequently could set up a set of statistical system.
"However, that is now a thing of the past, I feel we could not keep pace with the agriculture statistics in developed countries," he noted.
During the last couple of decades, a big gap has risen between developed and developing countries in terms of availability of statistical data, indicators, quality and statistical application in almost all fields, he said.
"It is more glaring in agriculture where real time data on most of the variables is not available. For instance, we often talk of food waste. But, there is no official estimate how much food production is wasted in developing countries. Simple land use statistics are available in time gap of 4-5 years. Same in case of data on irrigation," he said.
One of the reason for considerable time gap in availability of quality data, Chand said that the welfare country is still depend on manual reporting from revenue officials.
"We have made so much advance in remote sensing and satellite for collecting data. Their use in agriculture data is very low," he added. LUX BAL

"Stimulus and unemployment are killing the workforce."Staffing struggles <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployed-workers-arent-returning-to-the-labor-force-jobless-benefits-2021-4">extend far beyond the fast food industry. </a>"There is an insatiable appetite in America for unskilled labor," said Marc Wulfraat, the president of logistics consulting firm MWPVL. "This offers a great foundation for a happy life for your family."Many relatives of detained Uighurs in Xinjiang say their relatives are professionals - such as doctors and editors - and do not need vocational training.China has acknowledged the existence of some "re-education camps," but repeatedly denied any reports of torture.The East Turkistan National Awakening Movement activist group <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighur-prison-camp-suspected-locations-maps-2019-11">published the locations of 465 prisons and detention centers</a> last week. He decided to pivot, and studied to become a licensed sex therapist."If you go to war with your sexuality, you will lose and cause more problems than when you started. So when people go to these meetings, they'll say, 'I have 30 days [without sex]. I have 60 days. I relapsed.' They're trying to fight their erotic orientation and that's never good," said Kort.On Tuesday March 16, soon after the shooting news broke, Ley posted a tweet, saying he suspected <a href="https://twitter.com/DrDavidLey/status/1372029948714643464">Long had </a>attended one of these non-evidence-based programs. It's so frustrating because he stigmatized the world that I live in," Johnston said."[The shooting] had nothing to do with being sex-deprived or being a sex addict, nothing at all."Rather than being a side point, Long's sex addiction and failed treatment became an excuse for his heinous behavior.That narrative, of a white male "sex addict" at his wit's end, helps no one.It just detracts from the racist and misogynistic undertones of the <keyword id="39494" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crime">crime</keyword>, and minimizes Asian people's experiences with hate and violence. And while it might not seem like an obvious application of the IoT, education is on that list.The internet has deeply rooted itself into our schools, and e-learning has become common practice in the American school system. But the applications of the IoT in education are numerous, and the implications for this disruption are tremendous.The rise of mobile technology and the IoT allows schools to improve the safety of their campuses, keep track of key resources, and enhance access to information. Teachers can even use this technology to create "smart lesson plans," rather than the traditional stoic plans of yesteryear.Below, we've compiled a list of IoT education examples, including the uses of the IoT in higher education, the future of the internet in education, and examples of companies that are using the IoT to enter the education space.<h2>Impact of IoT &amp; Technology on Education</h2>According to an eMarketer <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/five-charts-understanding-gen-z-s-devices-and-digital-usage">estimate</a>, 83.2% of all 12- to 17-year-olds have a smartphone. Additionally, 73.0% of parents said their kids had a smartphone between ages 11 to 13, and 31.0% said their kids had one between ages 6 and 10.With that digitally native foundation upon which to build, it's easy to see how the Internet of Things is poised to radically transform education as we know it. Students who use their mobile devices in the classroom can automate tasks that they already do now, such as note-taking, schedule checking, and research.As for the schools, the greatest benefits would be <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/internet-of-things-utilities-water-electric-gas-2016-10">increased energy efficiency</a> and reduced operating costs. New Richmond schools in Tipp City, Ohio are saving approximately $128,000 each year by using a web-based system that controls all mechanical equipment inside the buildings.And the savings continue as schools invest in reusable resources, such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. An average school spends about $200,000 on paper annually - adding up to about 10% of most schools' budget - but reusable tech would completely eliminate that cost.As more schools adopt this technology, expect to see more "smart schools" pop up throughout the U.S. until they are the standard for American education.<h2>Internet and Higher Education</h2>The IoT can begin disrupting the education process as early as kindergarten and can continue to do so through 12th grade, but perhaps the most profound effects occur in higher education.Students, particularly in college, are increasingly moving away from paper books toward tablets and laptops. With all of the necessary information at their fingertips, students can now learn at their own pace and have a nearly identical educational experience in their homes and in the classroom. And while this trend provides increased convenience for students, it also makes the teaching process more efficient for professors. The surge in connected technology means that instructors do not need to manually grade tests on paper or perform other routine tasks.Instead, professors can focus on the actual, personal instruction that is most valuable to their students. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/internet-of-things-cloud-computing-2016-10">Devices connected to the cloud</a> allow professors to gather data on their students and then determine which ones need the most individual attention and care. These statistics also let teachers properly adjust their lesson plans for future classes.Outside of the classroom, universities can use connected devices to monitor their students, staff, and resources and equipment at a reduced operating cost, which saves everyone money. And these tracking capabilities should also lead to safer campuses. For example, students would be able to keep track of connected buses and adjust their schedules accordingly, which would prevent them from spending unnecessary time in potentially dangerous areas.<h2>IoT Applications in Education</h2>The foremost example of a tech company that has invaded schools is SMART, which pioneered the world's first interactive whiteboard in 1991. SMART boards changed the way teachers and students interacted in the classroom by moving lessons away from the dusty chalkboards that dominated education for decades.But SMART is far from the only company sinking its hooks into the U.S. school system. IPEVO has also manufactured a wireless interactive whiteboard - serving as a potential alternative to the SMART board. EdTech companies and startups are also developing services and applications to be used in the classroom. Ideapaint dove headlong into the IoT by developing an app called Bounce with the goal of bringing more of the educational experience online.Additionally, <a href="https://www.classdojo.com/">ClassDojo</a> - an education app available via the Apple Store and Google Play - allows parents to see student schoolwork via photos and videos. Class Dojo is used in 95% of all K-8 schools in the U.S. and 180 countries and messages can be translated into 35 languages automatically. <h2>More to Learn</h2>The Internet of Things (IoT) is powering transformation for enterprises, consumers, and governments. Applications of Internet of Things technology in the education sector

Support is building for an increase in the <keyword id="562632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="minimum-wage">minimum wage</keyword> with Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Rep. George Miller (D-CA) introducing legislation to raise it to $10.10 an hour from the current level of $7.25. The Obama administration recently <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/11/07/white-house-official-obama-supports-harkinmiller-bid-to-increase-minimum-wage/">came out in support</a> of Harkin and Miller's bill and <a href="http://www.nelp.org/page/-/rtmw/uploads/Memo-Public-Support-Raising-Minimum-Wage.pdf?nocdn=1">polling</a> finds that most Americans are in favor of it as well.
The most important part of the legislation, though, may not be the wage hike, but that it indexes the minimum wage to inflation in the future. Every year that the minimum wage stays the same, its purchasing power decreases a little bit thanks to cost-of-living increases. Over time, these reductions add up. Here's a graph of the federal minimum wage since 1960 adjusted for inflation:

Just as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how-seniors-have-been-getting-screwed-by-how-we-calculate-social-security-2013-11">seniors have been screwed</a> for years by the use of an inaccurate statistic for inflation adjustment calculations, minimum wage workers have been screwed by the lack of any automatic adjustment at all.
In 1960, the nominal minimum wage was $1.00, but that is equal to nearly $8.00 in today's dollars. In fact, the real minimum wage peaked in 1968 at $10.74 an hour (2013 dollars). Since then, the purchasing power of the minimum wage has slowly fallen over time.
Occasionally, Congress manually adjusts the minimum wage upward. Due to adjustments in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the real minimum wage is now $1.26 higher than it was in 2006. But the manual adjustments haven't kept up with inflation over the long run.
For policymakers who support the minimum wage, no matter the level, it is inexcusable to not adjust it for inflation. The value of the minimum wage should not decrease over time thanks to congressional failure to annually adjust it. Already 11 states index their minimum wage to inflation to correct this. The federal government should follow suit.
