How to turn Google SafeSearch on or off

<br /><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11892740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> is allowing anyone under the age of 18 to remove their <keyword id="11907669" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="images" source="Orion">images</keyword> from search results.</li><li>Google originally announced increased protections for children and teens in August, promoting <keyword id="12404014" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="internet-safety" source="Orion">internet safety</keyword>.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-discrimination-chelsey-glasson-regret-using-workplace-eap-therapists-2021-10">Google</a> is allowing anyone under the age of 18, or their parent or guardian, to remove their images from search results.</p><p>This policy change was enacted on Wednesday and is part of what the company says is its larger shift towards protecting younger users on its platforms. Google originally announced <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/08/10/google-to-introduce-increased-protections-for-minors-on-its-platform-including-search-youtube-and-more/">increased protections for children and teens</a> in August, allowing younger internet users to have safer avenues on the internet. For example, YouTube, which is owned by Google, is making its "take a break" and bedtime reminders <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/08/10/google-to-introduce-increased-protections-for-minors-on-its-platform-including-search-youtube-and-more/">default for all users ages 13 to 17</a> and limiting the visibility of videos posted by its younger users.</p><p>All requests will be reviewed by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-antitrust-filing-facebook-jedi-antitrust-texas-header-bidding-2021-10">Google</a> and its team may reach out for additional information for verification if needed. Once the image removal request is approved, it will no longer appear in the images tab or as thumbnails in any feature in <keyword id="12047893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="google-search" source="Orion">Google Search</keyword> and submitters will receive a notification, according to a <a href="https://blog.google/products/search/giving-kids-and-teens-more-control-over-their-images-search/">Google blog post</a> explaining the feature.</p><p>Google did not respond to Insider's request to comment.</p><p>"We believe this change will help give young people more control over their digital footprint and where their images can be found on Search," the company's post said.</p><p>However, images that are removed from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-updates-helped-book-piracy-flourish-research-shows-2021-10">Google search</a> results are not fully removed from the internet, Google warns. But a security company now says Google's light-hearted joke may have put its users at risk, <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/19/google_broke_own_security_with_april_fool_gag/">The Register reports</a>. </p><p>Everything on the com.google domain name site was backwards, so it wasn't really usable. <a href="http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2015/04/17/googles-april-fools-prank-inadvertently-broke-their-security.html">However, internet research company Netcraft says that Google's joke</a> may have allowed hackers to hijack anyone testing out the "Elgoog" site.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Netcraft says that the way Google flipped the page around meant that hackers could have copied the site's formatting to "clickjack" a user, fooling them into visiting malicious websites. One of Google's April Fools' Day pranks accidentally created a big security flaw

And although it's easy to assume that all kids are tech-savvy, there's still a lot that parents should be wary of.</p><p>If your family uses Microsoft Edge, consider activating Microsoft Edge's Kids Mode. This new mode is designed to keep children safe online without making the internet unusable.</p><p>Here's how Microsoft Edge's Kids Mode works, and how to enable it.</p><h2><strong>Microsoft Edge Kids Mode, explained</strong></h2><p>Enabling Kids Mode in Microsoft Edge turns on a content filter that limits which sites can be opened. A few dozen kid-friendly sites are allowed right from the start, and any site can be added at any time - but you'll need to enter a password.</p><p>It also blocks most site trackers, and while Bing is open, your searches are locked under the SafeSearch filter that excludes explicit results.</p><p>Kids Mode is meant for users between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. This makes it difficult to leave the browser without permission.</p><p>Here's how to turn on Kids Mode, and then leave when you're ready.</p><h2><strong>How to enable and use Microsoft Edge Kids Mode</strong></h2><p><strong>1. </strong>Open Microsoft Edge and click your profile icon in the top-right corner. If there's a new website that you want to allow your children to access, here's how to add it.</p><p><strong>1. </strong>While in Kids Mode, head to the website that you want to add. You can either enter its URL in the address bar, or search for it on Bing.</p><p><strong>2. </strong>You'll see a page saying that Kids Mode "can't get to this site yet." How to enable and use Kids Mode in Microsoft Edge to make web browsing child-friendly

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock.com</span></p><p class="caption">The Microsoft Bing search engine.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Bing, Microsoft's search engine, was surfacing child pornography, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/10/unsafe-search/">TechCrunch reports</a>.</li><li>A report from online safety consultancy AntiToxin, commissioned by TechCrunch, found that several image searches using terms referring to children and pornography turned up explicit photos of clearly under-aged children.</li><li>Microsoft told TechCrunch it has removed these illegal images, and is working to block such search results in the future - though AntiToxin says that it found that some searches still showed the illegal images in question, even after the report was published.</li><li>Other social platforms have also had issues with rampant child porn, notably including Facebook's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-has-a-child-porn-problem-report-2018-12">WhatsApp</a>.</li></ul><p>Microsoft's Bing search engine appears to have had a problem with child pornography.</p><p><a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/10/unsafe-search/">TechCrunch reports</a> that several queries on Bing returned child pornography for searches - even on seemingly-innocent search terms, suggested by Bing itself, related to the popular "Omegle kids" app. </p><p>According to a report from online safety consultancy <a href="http://antitoxin.com/">AntiToxin,</a> commissioned by TechCrunch, Bing search results included images that "any professional or novice can determine to be of underage boys and girls posing in partial/full nudity, as well as partaking in various sexual acts alone, or with others, including other minors, and/or adults."</p><p>It's important to note that searching for terms related to child pornography is illegal, and could constitute a crime. As such, Business Insider is not including in this story the specific search terms AntiToxin used in its report.</p><p>Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. However, Microsoft told TechCrunch it fixed the issue after the publication made it aware, and removed illegal content from showing up in the search results used in AntiToxin's report. However, AntiToxin found that some Bing queries still turned up illegal imagery, even after the publication of the report, according to TechCrunch.</p><p>"<span>Clearly these results were unacceptable under our standards and policies and we appreciate TechCrunch making us aware," Microsoft executive Jordi Ribas told TechCrunch in a statement. "We acted immediately to remove them, but we also want to prevent any other similar violations in the future. We're focused on learning from this so we can make any other improvements needed."</span></p><p>In its report, AntiToxin found that Bing not only turned up image results showing child porn, but also suggested related search terms that turn up more illegal photos. A search for "Omegle kids," referring to the online video chat platform for talking with strangers, gave suggestions for related queries that sometimes returned child porn.</p><p><span>This isn't the first time Bing has come under fire for the images that pop up in its search results when you turn off the SafeSearch feature. <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/367878/bing-is-suggesting-the-worst-things-you-can-imagine/">HowToGeek reported</a> in October that Bing surfaced racist and offensive results and related search queries, though Microsoft quickly set to work cleaning it up. </span></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-has-a-child-porn-problem-report-2018-12">WhatsApp has a child porn problem</a></em></p><p><span>The tech titans have been fighting to keep their platforms free of child pornography and other illegal imagery for a long time. Explicit images showing illegal activity have been problems on platform <a href="https://gizmodo.com/users-looking-for-child-pornography-are-gathering-on-pe-1821290878">Twitter's livestreaming platform Periscope</a> and on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-facebook-unveils-systems-for-catching-child-nudity-grooming-of-children-2018-10?r=UK&amp;IR=T">Facebook.</a> </span><span>Most recently, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-has-a-child-porn-problem-report-2018-12">WhatsApp</a> came under fire for failing to monitor a number a groups that openly shared child porn. </span></p><p><span>To monitor illegal and explicit content online, social platforms often employ content moderators to police what's posted. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-to-hire-3000-moderators-to-keep-suicides-from-being-streamed-2017-5">Facebook employs thousands</a> of content moderators, and Facebook-owned WhatsApp employs around 300.
