Google urged U.S. District Judge James Donato to pause the ruling while it appeals the decision. <h2>About the case </h2> The injunction stems from a case filed by Epic Games, the maker of “Fortnite.” In October 2023, a jury ruled that Google had been illegally monopolising the way consumers download apps and make in-app purchases on Android devices. Judge Donato’s ruling, issued on October 7, forces Google to allow third-party app stores and payment methods on its platform. Additionally, the order bars Google from paying device manufacturers to preinstall its Play Store and from sharing revenue generated through it with other app distributors. In an interview to PTI, Chobey said Google believes that AI should be regulated but in a way that strikes a fine balance between user benefit -- which is "still at a nascent stage" -- and at the same time, fosters innovation. India is a very important market for Google, she said, underlining the company's deep commitment in areas spanning AI, payments, <keyword id="20055897" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pixel" source="keywords">Google Pixel</keyword> manufacturing and skilling amongst others. To a question on the concerns flagged by some Indian startups on alleged anti-competitive practices, Chobey said Google has been "deeply and closely" partnering and working with the startup ecosystem in the country, and that millions of apps are hosted on <keyword id="22336128" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Playstore" source="keywords">Google Playstore</keyword>. "As Google, we've been deeply partnering with the startup ecosystem, and on Google Play, we host millions of apps...we also invest in training Android developers... "So I think we've been deeply and closely working with the startup ecosystem in India, and we remain committed and will continue to do so through India digitisation fund... We have startup accelerators, we have dedicated AI startup accelerators where startups are able to access our advanced technology, work closely with us, and that work is only increasing," she said. Google has completed 20-year milestone in India, and is looking forward to the next 20 years in which "AI is going to play a big role here", she observed. "When it comes to AI, we are focused on three pillars. The first one is how are we leveraging AI to help every individual in the country. The best way we, as Google, can do it is by using AI to democratise information as well as opportunity. "When we talk about skilling, etc, that talks to the opportunity bit. Secondly, we want to really play a significant role in developing the already-thriving AI ecosystem in India, by investing in infrastructure, by scaling the AI engine. And of course, we will do all of this very, very responsibly, sustainably and inclusively," she said. The third pillar in Google AI strategy is around building for the future, she said. "...to create a really thriving workforce that is primed to be successful in the AI-powered world. That space is evolving and evolving fast, and we want to keep pace with it. I also want to add here that we as part of Google India team feel so proud that there's so much work that's happening in India which is not just solving for India, it's solving (things) globally," Chobey said. Google on Thursday lined up a slew of AI-powered innovations, announced Indian language capabilities for Gemini Live, and unveiled new updates for Google Lens, Google Maps, as well as Google Pay at the tenth edition of 'Google for India' event in New Delhi. The Google top boss asserted that India is and will remain an important market for the company. "From Google's perspective, India has always been a very important market for us. We've always very uniquely solved for India, worked locally with partners, we spoke of 'India digitization fund'... We started Pixel (phone) manufacturing here... I spoke about GPay... So that continues. India for Google is a very important market, both from a user perspective, but also from the kind of research development that is happening," she said. Google, she said, is aligning its goals to India's growth and vision. "Today, we have over 10,000 Googlers, working out of India for India and other markets as well. And we have presence across 5 cities, so multiple offices here, that's really, really important... When it comes to India, I always say this - what is good for India, is good for Google... "So we are very finely integrating our objectives, our vision, to what is really good for India, and will continue to do so," she said, adding that India will remain a very important market for the company. Google is leveraging India to not just solve local challenges, but also global ones, Chobey added. The first Made-in-India Google Pixel 8 devices started rolling off production lines in August in India. "Watch out the space... we will talk about it more. But we're really, really happy and proud about the fact that we have started manufacturing Pixel 8 in India. Of course, we have now also have service centers in India. Google Pixel 9 is available on Flipkart, through Croma tie up...Reliance digital tie ups...and so on so forth. So we are really invested in this space," she said.

Looking ahead at our next 20 years in India, AI will play big role here: Google India MD

<keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword> on Friday said that after giving developers in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> more than three years to prepare, including three weeks after the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword>'s order, it is taking necessary "ensure our policies are applied consistently across the ecosystem, as we do for any form of policy violation globally". The company said in a blog post that enforcement of its policy, when necessary, can include removal of non-compliant apps from Google <keyword id="20163860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="play" source="keywords">Play</keyword>. Developers are welcome to resubmit their apps to be listed on Play by electing any of the three billing options as part of the company's payments policy. One of the options is to operate on a consumption-only basis without paying a service fee, even if it is part of a paid service. "With this option, any developer could allow a user of their app to access content that they paid for outside the app," said Google. The second option is to integrate Google Play's billing system to transact with millions of customers around the world and give their users safe ways to pay and the ability to manage their payments from a central location. The third option is to offer an alternative billing system alongside Google Play's for users in India. "When users opt for alternative billing systems, the fee is further reduced by an additional four per cent. App developers expanding in international markets can also enroll as part of our user choice billing pilot currently available in 35 markets," Google explained. In the meantime, "these developers continue to have other options to operate their business on Android, including distribution through alternative Android app stores or directly via their websites." "Existing users will be able to continue to access the apps without interruption - and we continue to offer our support to help developers get into compliance," said the company. The Android and Play ecosystem have collectively supported over 2.5 million jobs in India, said the company. In India, less than 60 developers on Google Play are subject to fees above 15 per cent, it added. The company said it has over 200,000 Indian developers using Google Play who adhere to the policies. The Supreme Court last month issued notice on a petition to Google India filed by tech startups, challenging Google Play Store's billing policy as "exploitative". Google begins to enforce Play Store policies in India, to remove non-compliant apps

New Delhi, Industry body IAMAI on Friday "advised" <keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword> not to delist any apps from Google <keyword id="20163860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="play" source="keywords">Play</keyword>, after the tech titan sent out a clear warning that it will remove apps not complying with Play store billing policies. Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) confirmed that at least four of its members have received notices from Google. In a statement, IAMAI advised Google not to delist any apps from Google Play. "The affected members of IAMAI are of the view that a substantive hearing of the case is pending before the <keyword id="19900742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court-of-india" source="keywords">Supreme Court of India</keyword>, and Google should not take any coercive action during the pendency of the case," IAMAI said. Google on Friday said a clutch of companies, including well-established ones, continue to flout its billing norms, choosing not to pay Play store service fee applicable on sale of in-app digital goods, and warned that it will not hesitate to take necessary action to enforce policies, including removal of such non-compliant apps from Google Play. Amid a warcry over Google Play billing policy by some prominent Indian startups and the recent launch of <keyword id="20522402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indus-appstore" source="keywords">Indus Appstore</keyword>, the Made-in-India app market challenger, Google in a blogpost asserted that allowing a small group of developers to get differential treatment from the vast majority of developers who are paying their fair share creates an uneven playing field putting all other apps and games at a competitive disadvantage. "After giving these developers more than three years to prepare, including three weeks after the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword>'s order, we are taking necessary steps to ensure our policies are applied consistently across the ecosystem, as we do for any form of policy violation globally," Google said in its blogpost. It went on to say that enforcement of the policy, when necessary, can include removal of non-compliant apps from Google Play. Google, however, added that existing users will be able to continue to access the apps without interruption and that it continues "to offer our support to help developers get into compliance". Developers, Google said, are welcome to resubmit their apps to be listed on Play by opting for one of the three billing options as part of its payment policy. "Today, we have over 2,00,000 Indian developers using Google Play who adhere to our policies, helping us ensure we have a safe platform; however, for an extended period of time, 10 companies, including many well-established ones, have chosen to not pay for the immense value they receive on Google Play by securing interim protections from the court," Google had said.

Epic Games argued, and a jury ultimately agreed, that Google had violated antitrust policies in its Play Store for Android devices.In December, that same jury found that the tech giant held a monopoly in its Play Store and artificially limited the reach of competitors' apps, driving up prices for processing in-app purchases. Northern District of California Judge James Donato's ruling on Monday established remedies to that monopoly: For three years, Google will not be permitted to pay companies to launch apps exclusively on the Play Store or pay them to preinstall the company's app store on devices.According to Peter Cohan, an associate professor of management practice at Babson College, the ruling could "cost Google tens of billions of revenue over the next three years" due to lost in-app payments and revenue that will go to competing third-party app platforms."In recent years, the government has been trying to countervail the high pricing power of dominant tech companies," Cohan told Business Insider. "This fits into that shift."The Monday ruling in the case resulted in a disparate outcome compared to a lawsuit Epic Games filed against <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple">Apple</a> in August 2020, which accused Apple of holding a similar monopoly with its App Store. But, these days, even "more conservative justices have come around to the notion that certain sorts of breakups of monopolies are positive things, especially in regard to technology — so in regard to that, this case is one to watch."Chaffee added: "It's one of those things where we're going to see potentially odd or unexpected lineups in regard to how the court ends up approaching these types of issues."When reached by Business Insider, a representative for Google pointed to a public statement about the ruling indicating that the company plans to appeal but declined to answer further questions."The Epic verdict missed the obvious: Apple and Android clearly compete," Google's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/public-policy/epic-games-verdict-appeal/">statement</a> reads, in part. "We will appeal and ask the courts to pause implementing the remedies to maintain a consistent and safe experience for users and developers as the legal process moves forward."Alden Abbott, former General Counsel for the FTC and senior research fellow with the Mercatus Center told Business Insider he is skeptical that the injunction issued against Google will benefit consumers, as antitrust law is supposed to."Preventing Google from bidding for exclusive initial rights to host top games will artificially undermine Google's competition with Apple," Abbott said. "It may also reduce third-party incentives to invest in creating the best games in the hope of winning exclusivity. On both those counts — reduced competition with Apple and reduced incentives to enhance quality — consumers are likely to suffer."When Epic Games' case against Apple was similarly appealed, the Supreme Court denied requests to hear it, leaving Apple with its partial victory.Representatives for Epic Games directed Business Insider to a public thread about the Google ruling, posted on X by the company's CEO, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1843394692551192972">Tim Sweeney</a>."The Google Play Store injunction lasts for 3 years," Sweeney wrote. Customers with RuPay credit cards issued by Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, Indian Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India will be able to avail this feature. Until the latest update, UPI-based payment app Google Pay, like most payments apps, only supported payments using a debit card. Now, users can add their RuPay credit card and make payments seamlessly to merchants across the country. At present, there is no option to add Visa and Mastercard-issued credit cards to Google Pay or any other UPI payment app in India. <ul><li><keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> has termed <keyword id="657366" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="slice" source="Orion">Slice</keyword> as a harmful app, recommending users to uninstall it.</li><li>The app reportedly tried to spy on users’ <keyword id="458689" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-data" source="Orion">personal data</keyword> such as messages, photos, audio records and call history.</li><li>Slice has claimed that the company has fixed the issue.</li></ul> Fintech company Slice which has touted itself as a credit card alternative has come under the scanner after Google has alerted users that the app is trying to spy on users’ personal data. Google Play Protect routinely scans applications installed on the device to identify malicious apps that are trying to steal user data. Play Protect today sent a notification that said, “slice puts your device at risk”. Slice tries to spy on personal data Clicking on the notification takes the user to the Play Protect page which reveals that Slice is a harmful app that is trying to spy on personal data, such as messages, photos, audio recordings or call history. It further recommended users to uninstall the app. Slice claims it has fixed the issue Slice has issued a clarification on Twitter, claiming that the issue has been fixed. “Yesterday evening—our Android update led to a risk message from Play Store. We investigated it and fixed the issue in 4 hours.” “1% of app users are still on the previous version. If you're seeing this issue, we would request you to update your app to the latest version asap,” Slice added. At the moment, it is not clear what triggered the alert and whether Slice was trying to spy on users with its earlier update. The company in its tweet has not clarified why an alert was triggered by Google. So far, Google has not revealed why an alert was triggered. Slices issues a clarification "Last evening, Slice's Android app update led to a risk message from Google Play Protect to the users of the app. We have investigated this issue and it was resolved within 4 hours. While we continue to investigate the issue thoroughly along with Google Play that is particularly associated with the version 10.07.1 – which seems to be a technical glitch. There has been no material change in the system. We urge our users who are facing this issue to reinstall their app and use the version 10.0.7.3 immediately,” Slice said in a statement to Business Insider India. This has come at a time when Slice is already in hot waters with the country’s central bank. The Reserve Bank of India recently barred non-banking prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) such as wallets and prepaid cards from loading credit lines on their platforms. The central bank has said that non-banking institutions cannot load credit lines onto them. Slice and Unicards are among the companies that will be impacted by this. Here’s how to buy and sell gold on Google Pay

<ul><li><keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> clocked over 14.55 billion transactions in volume and ₹26.19 trillion in terms of value.</li><li>UPI’s transaction volume and value have almost doubled since last year's recording.</li><li>Debit cards account for 10 percent and Credit cards accounted for 7 percent of transactions in Q1 2022.</li></ul>India saw 9.36 billion transactions amounting to ₹10.25 trillion in the first quarter (January-March period) via various payment modes led by Unified Payment Interface (UPI), a new report showed on Monday. The UPI P2M (person to merchant) transactions emerged as the most preferred payment mode among consumers with a market share of 64 per cent in volume and 50 per cent in terms of value, according to the report by Worldline, a global leader in payments industry. In Q1 2022, UPI clocked over 14.55 billion transactions in volume and ₹26.19 trillion in terms of value. Its transactions volume and value has almost doubled since last year recording about a 99 per cent increase in volume and over 90 per cent increase in value compared to Q1 2021. As of the first quarter, the top <keyword id="3904501" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi-apps" source="Orion">UPI apps</keyword> in terms of volume were PhonePe, Google Pay, <keyword id="14300323" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank-app" source="Orion">Paytm Payments Bank App</keyword>, Amazon Pay, Axis banks App while top PSP UPI Players were YES Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and Paytm Payments Bank. Among the top UPI Apps, Phone Pe, Google Pay and Paytm accounted for 94.8 per cent of UPI transactions volume and 93 per cent of UPI transactions value as of March 2022, the report showed. The average ticket size (ATS) for UPI P2P (peer-to-peer) transactions was ₹2,455 and ₹860 for P2M transactions (as of March). Credit cards accounted for 7 per cent of transactions, but 26 per cent of value, indicating that customers still prefer to use their credit cards for high value transactions. Debit cards account for 10 per cent of transactions, but 18 per cent in value. The volume has shrunk from previous years likely because of the rise of UPI. As of March, the total number of POS terminals deployed by merchant acquiring banks were 6.07 million with over half a million POS terminals deployed during Q1 2022. The POS deployment witnessed over 28 per cent growth in Q1 2022 compared to a year before. As of March, the total number of Bharat QRs were 4.97 million, a 39 per cent rise as compared to March 2021 while UPI QRs stood at 172.73 million, registering an increase of 87 per cent as compared to March 2021. The total number of credit and debit cards in circulation by the end of Q1 2022 was 991.28 million. As of January, there were about 658 million Internet users and about 1.2 billion mobile subscribers in India. In Q1 2022, consumers made 15.6 billion mobile based payments whereas net banking/Internet browser-based transactions were over 1 billion, the report showed. During the Google Pay session at I/O, the Product Lead for Google Pay, Rajiv Apana introduced new features including prominent security across the Google Pay ecosystem. He said, “in the future, we will look to provide even more helpful information about the card benefits such as points, cashback, and purchase predictions, so our users can make the best choice when they are checking out.” During the session, Apana also highlighted the upcoming security feature, Virtual cards. It is focused on enhanced security and privacy by replacing actual cards with virtual one that will protect the users from fraudulent websites. Additionally, just like the auto-fill form, the checkout form will be automatically filled, saving the hassle to input card details. Google Pay is currently available in more than 40 countries and soon we hope Indian users will use these upcoming features.
