In probably the first case of a Big Tech giant paying a penalty to the Indian regulators as the government aims to bring a new Digital India Act, <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> has paid the entire penalty amount of Rs 1,337.76 crore imposed by the Competition Commission of India (<keyword id="47183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cci" source="Orion">CCI</keyword>) in the <keyword id="16080839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="android-case" source="Orion">Android case</keyword>. Reliable sources told IANS on Tuesday that the entire penalty amount has been deposited in the Consolidated Fund of India, within the 30-day deadline given by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (<keyword id="6396355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nclat" source="Orion">NCLAT</keyword>) in its order. The Indian market regulator imposed a penalty on Google in October 2022 for allegedly exploiting its dominant position in the <keyword id="6355645" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="android" source="Orion">Android</keyword> market. Earlier this year, Google announced to comply with the CCI's directives for Android. "The CCI's recent directives for Android and Play require us to make significant changes for India, and we've informed the CCI of how we will be complying with their directives," Google said in a statement. "We're updating the Android compatibility requirements to introduce changes for partners to build non-compatible or forked variants," said Google. Through user choice billing, developers can offer users the option to choose an alternative billing system alongside Google Play's billing system when purchasing in-app digital content. The changes came as a Supreme Court bench said that the findings by the CCI cannot be said to be "without jurisdiction or with manifest error" and affirmed the NCLAT order, declining to grant interim relief to Google. The bench directed the NCLAT to dispose of Google's appeal by March 31 and granted Google seven days to deposit 10 per cent of the Rs 1,337.76 crore penalty imposed by the CCI. Google had alleged that the CCI copy-pasted parts of a European court order without examining associated evidence in India. The CCI has also imposed a penalty of Rs 936.44 crore on Google in a separate case for abusing its dominant position with respect to its Play Store policies. In response to Google's announcement of implementing its new Google Play payments policy, the Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF) had expressed deep concern over the policy change and has demanded that the new policies must be put on hold, since Google charging a nearly 30 per cent service fee on app developers will prove to be a significant blow to the Indian startup ecosystem. Google pays entire ₹1,338 crore penalty to CCI in Android case

NCLAT upholds ₹1,337.76 cr fine imposed on Google by competition watchdog

The Supreme Court on Monday said it could consider sending the application filed by <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> back to the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (<keyword id="6396355" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nclat" source="Orion">NCLAT</keyword>). The tech giant has moved the apex court seeking stay on a Competition Commission of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> (<keyword id="47183" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cci" source="Orion">CCI</keyword>) order imposing a Rs 1,337 crore penalty on it. During the hearing, a bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Google moved the apex court after the setback at NCLAT, which did not stay the CCI order on abuse of dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem case. Earlier this month, the NCLAT did not find any urgency to pass an interim order, after noting that Google filed the appeal in December last year, though the CCI passed the order in October. It directed Google to deposit 10 per cent of the fine amount. The tribunal had said that there was no urgency shown in the filing of the appeal, therefore Google could not be allowed to press for interim relief. Go First insolvency: NCLAT to pass order on aircraft lessors' petitions on May 22

Suspended directors are also ordered to deposit Rs 5 crore to make the immediate expenses," the order stated. The budget airline had also cancelled all the flights' operations till May 19 due to operational reasons, "Go First flights until 19th May 2023 are cancelled. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and request customers." US-based jet manufacturers Pratt and Whitney (P-W) has defended itself against the budget airline's claim that P-W is responsible for the financial condition and bankruptcy. "Go First's allegations that Pratt and Whitney is responsible for its financial condition are without merit. Pratt and Whitney will vigorously defend itself against Go's claims, and is pursuing its own legal recourse," Pratt and Whitney spokesperson told ANI. One, Google was promoting its own services in the search results, specifically when it comes to providing flight options. Second, the ‘universal results’ that were presented were based on Google’s preferences rather than actual relevance. And third, the prohibitions placed on partners to avoid other search engines were unfair and restrictive. Nonetheless, Google that obtained a partial stay on the CCI’s ruling only had to deposit a partial amount of the imposed penalty. Meanwhile, a local matchmaking website Matrimony.com has filed its own appeal against the CCI ruling claiming that the Alphabet Inc. subsidiary has gotten off too lightly. The events of May 28 will tell if the CCI’s concerns are truly ‘narrow’ or if their practices have had a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/google-appeals-against-cci-ruling/articleshow/63710821.cms">detrimental</a> effect on the economic welfare of India.

The Reserve Bank has increased the short-term lending rate by 225 basis points since May last year to contain <keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="Orion">inflation</keyword>, mostly driven by external factors, especially global supply chain disruption, following the Russia-Ukraine war outbreak. The policy rate now stands at 6.25 per cent. The RBI's rate-setting panel - Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) - will decide on the interest rate on Wednesday. "In India, core inflation has been elevated for longer; however, it eased sequentially in the second half of 2022. An already elevated 6.25 per cent policy rate limits the need for further increases," S&amp;P said in a report. The RBI has been tasked to ensure that retail inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent. However, external factors have led retail inflation to remain above the upper tolerance limit for 11 months in a row. In November 2022, the retail inflation came below the 6 per cent level and declined further in December at 5.72 per cent. The agency had registered a case against Chanda, her husband and Venugopal Dhoot, along with their companies viz NuPower Renewables, Supreme Energy, Videocon International Electronics Ltd and Videocon Industries Limited. During its preliminary enquiry, the CBI found six loans worth Rs 1,875 crore were sanctioned to the Videocon Group and companies associated with it between June 2009 and October 2011 in an alleged violation of laid-down policies of ICICI Bank, which are part of the probe. The agency has said that the loans were declared non-performing assets in 2012, causing a loss of Rs 1,730 crore to the bank. Bombay HC grants bail to Venugopal Dhoot in ICICI loan fraud case

The Indian Institute of Technology, <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a course on drone technology that would be taught at IITs, other technical institutes and skill development centres in the country. The course has been designed on the directives of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. The ministry sees drone technology from the perspective of the future and believes the move would help in quality supply of specialists in this field. "This is why the ministry has undertaken this task of taking drone technology to students at the macro-level," said a faculty member. The task of designing the course was bestowed on two scientists of aero-space engineering -- <keyword id="13980376" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-abhishek" source="Orion">Dr Abhishek</keyword> and Mangal Kothari. The duo has developed a two-year degree course in which theory and practical would be of equal importance. The course also includes new technologies in making drones. Dr Abhishek said the course had been designed keeping in mind the developing needs and the students. The course would shortly be introduced in the academic institutions. The <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> has been a pioneer in the drone development programme. The scientists have come up with the smallest of drones equipped with cutting edge technologies apart from doing extensive research. The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to set up a centre of excellence for drone development at IIT Kanpur. The best drones from IIT Kanpur include Alakh that weighs just 225 grams. It has been developed for the armed forces for surveillance purposes. Drone named 'Gauraiya' appears like a sparrow and weighs 239 grams. It has proved its worth in hills and mountains. Hawk is a powerhouse of 300 grams, can fly for 25 minutes and sends live footage in an area of 2 km. The Auto-Pilot is armed with artificial intelligence and this drone sends all the data to the control room even if it has crashed. The Agri-drone monitors the crop, sprinkles pesticides and makes useful suggestions.
