San Francisco, June 9 (IANS) Apple which earns over $7 billion a year from Google for it to be default search engine for iOS and Siri can end its reliance on Google if it acquires privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo, top analysts have said.<br /><br /><br /><br /> <br /><br />In a note to investors, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi argued that while Google is the world's dominant search engine player, Apple is in a relatively strong position to apply pressure to the Alphabet company, reports Barron's.<br /><br />While Google pays over $7 billion a year to be the default search engine for iOS and Siri, it is approximately 30 per cent of an estimated $25 billion in annual ad revenue Google generates from Apple devices.<br /><br />If Apple buys DuckDuckGo, it can stop that ad revenue from going to Google and welcome that money into its kitty.<br /><br />"Apple may be in a stronger position than at first glance, given it controls the keys to the kingdom on who can monetize iOS search. However, it remains uncomfortably dependent on Bing to act as a counterweight to Google  hence our suggestion that Apple acquire its own search engine," Sacconaghi wrote. <br /><br />Google also has an option to pull out of the Apple deal if it can capture 70 per cent of its current iOS search revenue by pushing users to Google.com.<br /><br />"However, we suspect the company's fear of rocking the boat  which could compromise $15 billion in profits it captures today from iOS  may ultimately limit its freedom of action with Apple," wrote Sacconaghi.<br /><br />Sacconaghi has floated the idea of a DuckDuckGo acquisition by Apple for under $1 billion.<br /><br />The idea makes sense at a time when the US federal and state authorities are probing Google for its anti-trust practices. Google is facing privacy lawsuits and legal actions, particularly in the European Union but also in the US where it's facing a $5 billion class-action lawsuit.<br /><br />Justice Department investigators have sought details about measures to increase competition in the online search market from Google rival DuckDuckGo.<br /><br />DuckDuckGo Founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg told CNN earlier this month that a solution like a search preference menu can enhance competition.<br /><br />On Android devices, Google search had been the default for years. However, a fine imposed by the European Union in 2018 led Google to offer other search options to users.<br /><br />While declined to comment on DuckDuckGo, which promotes itself as a privacy-protecting search engine, Google said it was continuing to cooperate with the state and federal investigations.<br /><br />Apple first built DuckDuckGo integration into mobile Safari in iOS 8, allowing users to select the search engine, as well as alternatives Yahoo and Bing, in the Settings app, reports Apple Insider. <br /><br />Bing was the default search engine for Siri until 2017, when Apple transitioned to Google for a more "consistent web search experience."<br /><br />Sacconaghi said that to be certain, "we doubt an Apple-owned DuckDuckGo could ever generate profits sufficient to make back the $7 billion to $8 billion a year currently paid by Google".<br /><br />"Nevertheless, Apple would still likely be better off than a worst-case scenario where it had no backup, and Google or Microsoft (one or the other) withdrew from the bidding process altogether".<br /><br />--IANS<br /><br />na/

They don’t have as much e-commerce as these guys will have. Whatsapp Pay did not have the commercial sides of it as Whatsapp was trying to creep into the business. That's a <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-elon-musk-big-tech-magnificent-seven-stock-market-outlook-2024-1">marked difference from its fellow "Magnificent Seven" mega-cap stocks</a> — Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, and Meta — that are all up or flat on the year, except for Apple, which is down about 1.6%.</p><p>So, as outrageous as Musk's request might seem, it comes at the perfect time. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old airman, was accused of leaking US intelligence documents on Discord.</li><li>The US military uses Discord to recruit young people who are enthusiastic about video games.</li></ul><p>Members of a private Discord server where hundreds of US intelligence documents concerning the war in Ukraine were shared said the suspected leaker wanted to show off rather than fulfill some public duty, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jack-teixeira-leaked-national-guard-military-ukraine-e3161fc35a3872ace55a36297a1cae68" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Associated Press</a>.</p><p>Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old junior-ranking US National Guard airman, was arrested on Thursday in connection to the leak of classified Pentagon documents. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/12/discord-leaked-documents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post reported</a> the documents were posted on a private Discord community or "server" named Thug Shaker Central, a group of 20 to 30 people of mostly young men and teenagers, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/04/13/us/documents-leak-pentagon/heres-what-we-know-about-the-inquiry-into-the-leaked-documents?smid=url-share" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The New York Times</a>.</p><p><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/12/discord-leaked-documents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to the Post</a>, the name Thug Shaker Central is a racist allusion and was created as a space for members to share their love of video games, guns, and racist memes. </p><p>Some Republicans — most prominently <a href="https://twitter.com/RepMTG/status/1646615867285708802" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene</a> — have hailed Teixeira as a national hero, but members of Thug Shaker Central said otherwise.</p><p>A former member of Thug Shaker Central anonymously <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/04/15/discord-military-recruitment-pentagon-document-leaks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the Post</a> that Teixeira shared the documents to attain clout amongst his online community, where he was known as "O.G."</p><p>"If I had to give a gauge on it, it would be more or less just some nerds wanting to glance over some stuff and compare and contrast and kind of have a little joke about it," an unidentified Discord server member also told the AP. "At the end of the day, I mean we're just trying to have a fun time." It's unclear if the AP spoke to the same individual as the Post.</p><p>Discord has proliferated to about 150 million monthly active users since it was founded in 2015, <a href="https://www.statista.com/topics/9816/discord/#dossier-chapter1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Statista, a data analytics site</a>. The platform is a particular favorite among young gamers who use Discord servers to share gameplay clips or stream themselves playing popular video games like Valorant, Minecraft, Fortnite, or Apex Legends, a battle royale shooter game.</p><p>The attraction of gamers has made Discord a crucial tool for the US military and its broader campaign to focus recruiting efforts on online communities and <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/Story/Article/3244620/military-esports-how-gaming-is-changing-recruitment-morale/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video games</a>. For example, a US Army server dedicated to its esports team, first reported on by <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/04/15/discord-military-recruitment-pentagon-document-leaks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Post</a>, has <a href="https://discord.com/invite/usarmyesports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 17,000 users</a>. </p><p>"As the esports industry continues to grow exponentially, nearly every branch of the military now has an official service-sanctioned gaming program," <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/Story/Article/3244620/military-esports-how-gaming-is-changing-recruitment-morale/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a 2022 news release from the Defense Department said</a>. "For some of these service members, that means it's actually their job to play video games."</p><p>However, the reliance on digital platforms means the US military also has to be wary of dealing with an increasingly online population, especially on apps such as Discord, where users may feel more comfortable discussing sensitive topics because the servers can be set private.</p><p>In March, the US Special Operations Command had to warn service members in a guide not to "post anything in Discord that you wouldn't want seen by the general public."</p><p>"It may be a private server, but conversations and photos/videos can be captured by screenshot or recorded and leaked," the guide, which was first reported on and shared by the Post, said.</p><p>The guide also warns not to establish connections with users or servers "you do not know or trust."</p><p>Dan Meyer, an attorney with more than two decades of experience in federal employment and national security law, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/leaked-documents-online-video-games-pentagon-0fdfd178ddd0f6066945c292d230d865" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the AP</a> that social media and video games have long been a national security concern.</p><p>"The social media world and gaming sites in particular have been identified as a counterintelligence concern for about a decade," he told the AP, noting how foreign intelligence agents could hide their identities behind online avatars to connect with, for example, young service members gaming at the Norfolk Naval Base recreation center<strong>. </strong></p><p>A spokesperson for Discord and the Defense Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>

It starts at $36,425.</li></ul><p>The 2021 <keyword id="13197741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lexus-ux-250h" source="Orion">Lexus UX 250h</keyword> hybrid is small, squatty, and quirky, but not in a bad way — in an "I'm going mountain biking in Oregon" (or wherever you go mountain biking, I don't know) kind of way. It's oddly sporty, especially with its blue seat belts, blue paint, and blue accents weaving through the interior.</p><p>It's a weird vibe from a <keyword id="12453135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lexus" source="Orion">Lexus</keyword>. Different. But you'll learn to love that, if you somehow don't already. </p><h2><strong>The Lexus UX 250h: An urban explorer</strong></h2><p>The UX line is fairly new, <a href="https://newsroom.lexus.eu/2018-the-new-lexus-ux/">debuting in 2018</a> as Lexus' smallest crossover offering designed for "the modern urban explorer" and "buyers in their 30s." The "UX" stands for "urban crossover," and in the automotive industry, "urban" usually means "extremely small." </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="3449" width="5173" msid="89648450" hostid="261"></div><p>The UX thus has hatchback-like proportions, making it look a lot more athletic and adventurous than your average crossover. It also comes in two flavors: the purely gas-powered UX and the UX hybrid, which start at $34,225 and $36,425, respectively.</p><p>The UX hybrid doesn't plug in — instead, the battery charges while driving. It also has standard all-wheel drive while the gas-only models have front-wheel drive, and since AWD is typically a $2,000 option, you might as well go for the $2,200 hybrid upgrade.</p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="2929" width="4742" msid="89648451" hostid="261"></div><p>Lexus' UX 250h hybrid has a claimed 181 horsepower and a <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31517125/cvt-transmission-vs-automatic-quick-guide/">continuously variable transmission</a>, which fills the same role as an automatic for most drivers — ideally just with added fuel efficiency and smoothness. It comes with three trim choices: the regular UX 250h ($36,425), the UX 250h F Sport with sporty accents ($38,765), and the UX 250h Luxury with more comfort features ($41,465).</p><p>The UX 250h we drove for a week came from the bottom trim, with fees and optional extras bringing the final price to $41,840. The extras included: a $75 wireless charger; a $150 heated steering wheel; two $100 tablet holders in the rear seats; the $1,175 Premium package with a moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and heated and ventilated front seats; the $1,020 Black Line Special Edition package with various accent features and a two-piece luggage set to match your car; and other features. The Premium package recently got a price increase to $1,515.</p><div type="image" title="Lexus' family of Black Line cars, including the black two-piece luggage set." height="2334" width="3500" msid="89648453" hostid="261"></div><p>The 2021 UX lineup got <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/lexus/ux-4-door-suv/2021#headlights">top crash ratings</a> in every category from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and an overall <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">five-star rating</a> from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but where things get iffy are the headlights.</p><p>UX models got IIHS' lowest <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/lexus/ux-4-door-suv/2021#headlights">headlight safety ratings</a> when not equipped with the triple-beam LED headlight package (a $1,660 option), while models with the package got its highest headlight ratings. Just go ahead and put that into your budget, because being able to see the road is important.</p><h2><strong>What stands out: Young vi</strong>bes and a <strong>refined nature</strong></h2><p>The UX 250h isn't just cute — it's unexpectedly cute. Lexus carries a connotation of older and less adventurous — silver sedans and <a href="https://twitter.com/alanisnking/status/1417940618433732610">champagne SUVs</a>. But the UX 250h is young, fun, and colorful. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="2819" width="5168" msid="89648456" hostid="261"></div><p>There's a sporty exterior and a beautifully designed interior, from its textured seat bolsters and blue seat belts to its denim-like dashboard material and black headliner. Even with all of the blue accents, the car feels elegant. </p><div type="image" title="The Lexus UX Black Line black interior and blue seat belts." height="998" width="1361" msid="89648458" hostid="261"></div><p>One of Lexus' interior staples in recent years has been its touchpad-controlled infotainment system, which the company is phasing out now because <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/tech/40950/the-determined-employee-team-that-convinced-lexus-to-finally-drop-the-touchpad">touchpads are generally not great</a>. The UX 250h still has one, but you don't have to use it to adjust the radio or mess with other basic settings. There are buttons for that.</p><p>I didn't use the touchpad the whole week I had the car, and I thanked Lexus for having mercy on me with the buttons. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="3129" width="5090" msid="89648459" hostid="261"></div><p>The UX 250h isn't fast, but its transitions between electric and gas power are smooth — so smooth it's hard to tell the car is a hybrid aside from its silent startup and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCtpA67j4l8&amp;ab_channel=AssociatedPress">low-speed pedestrian warning sound</a> — and it never feels like it's struggling to get up to speed. It's agile yet comfortable as a commuter car.</p><p>Plus, it's a hybrid! Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are the perfect way to bridge the gap between our historical reliance on gas-powered cars and our electrified future, and the US Environmental Protection Agency <a href="https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&amp;id=43388">estimates you'll get 39 mpg combined</a> in the all-wheel-drive UX 250h. That's not a bad deal at all. </p><h2><strong>What falls short: Limited storage, tight rear seating </strong></h2><p>Not everything is perfect in the UX 250h's cozy interior. Its door panels are painfully plain. Back-seat passengers get vents but no climate control or seat heaters, and despite the front seats having heating and ventilation, the settings stay on even when you turn off the car. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="4165" width="2732" msid="89648460" hostid="261"></div><p>Because the passenger seat keeps the settings used by its last occupant even when no one is sitting there, you'll sometimes turn the car back on and won't realize it's heating or cooling the seat next to you — an annoying waste of energy. This happened to me almost daily in the UX 250h.</p><p>The back seats in the UX 250h are tight but not uncomfortable for people in the 5-foot-8 region, but go much bigger and you'll be pushing it. Rear cargo space is big enough to haul approximately 12 apples and a gel pen.</p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="5137" width="3425" msid="89648462" hostid="261"></div><p>The moonroof makes the inside of the car feel bigger, but it would benefit from panoramic treatment. With modern cars, it almost feels like standard-size moonroofs don't cut it anymore — the UX 250h's back seats would feel far lighter and more spacious if Lexus had gone full panoramic.</p><p>There's slight wind noise in the UX 250h on the highway, but that can easily be covered by a modest radio volume setting.</p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="2994" width="5184" msid="89648464" hostid="261"></div><p>What couldn't be covered in my loaner, though, were tiny scratches and dust on the shiny gray material outlining the car's shifter and touchpad. With only 564 miles on the odometer, it wasn't the greatest testament to how that stuff will hold up in the long term. </p><h2><strong>Our impressions: Perfect for the adult who still wants to have fun</strong></h2><p>I still don't quite know what a "modern urban explorer" is, but it's hard to imagine Lexus nailing that aura more than it did — in both the UX 250h's attitude and its usability. </p><p>The UX 250h has some drawbacks, sure. It's a little cramped for more than two people and some of the interior features could be better, but often the most important thing about a car is how it makes you feel. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="5006" width="3337" msid="89648466" hostid="261"></div><p>When you park the UX 250h and turn around to give it a final glance before going inside your destination, you'll feel special. You'll feel quirky. You'll feel adventurous, like a modern urban explorer — even if you're just going inside your local grocery store. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images / Spencer Platt</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Facebook suffered through a horrible day of stock trading on Thursday, as shares tumbled 19% and wiped out $120 billion of market value, the most in US stock-market history.</strong></li><li><strong>Goldman Sachs finds that one group of investors actually got a big boost from Facebook's market struggles, relative to their competitors.</strong></li></ul><p>Upon first glance, it would seem difficult to find any silver lining in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fb-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a>'s earnings-driven <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/stock-market" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stock-market</a> disaster on Thursday, which saw shares tumble 19%.</p><p>For one, the $120 billion in market value erased from the company was by far the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-stock-price-earnings-report-market-value-on-pace-for-record-drop-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biggest drop in US stock market history</a>. There's also the widespread damage that's rippled through hedge funds, for which Facebook was the most popular stock prior to the market bloodbath, according to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gs-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goldman Sachs</a> data.</p><p>But for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mutual-funds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mutual-fund</a> managers - a much-maligned group largely populated by traditional <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/stock-picking" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stock pickers</a> - the damage has been far more limited. In a shocking bit of prescience, their portfolios were actually underweight Facebook ahead of second-quarter earnings. </p><p>As the chart below from Goldman shows, the average large-cap mutual fund was 20 basis points underweight Facebook, relative to benchmarks. And it didn't happen overnight. The exposure has actually been trimmed gradually over time since reaching a multi-year high in mid-2015.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Goldman Sachs</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This is not to say that mutual-fund managers came out entirely unscathed. Any exposure to Facebook, however underweight relative to benchmarks, likely stung. But at the same time, they were able to make up valuable ground versus competitors.</p><p>Such a victory was needed, considering mutual funds have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-graphic-explains-everything-going-on-in-money-management-right-now-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">squeezed on both sides</a> by low-cost alternatives like exchange-traded funds and less liquid, high-cost investment options.</p><p>While Goldman has maintained its buy rating on Facebook specifically, other firms are starting to second-guess the broader market's heavy reliance on mega-cap tech.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/michael-hartnett" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michael Hartnett</a>, Bank of America Merrill Lynch's chief investment strategist, goes as far as to recommend investors outright bet against the so-called FANG group, which consists of Facebook, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amzn-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon</a>, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nflx-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netflix</a>, and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/googl-stock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Google</a>/Alphabet.</p><p>More specifically, Hartnett says traders should consider going long an emerging-markets group known as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) in the third quarter, while also shorting FANG. The objective of such a strategy would be to play a reversal in both groups from how they traded in the first half of 2018.</p><p>And wouldn't you know it, mutual funds are ahead of the game once again. One surprising group of investors got a huge boost Facebook's stock meltdown - and Bank of America explains how traders can follow suit

It's even more than the period surrounding the UK's decision to leave the European Union, which saw the S&amp;P 500 plunge more than 5% in just two days.</p><p>BAML is interpreting this as a warning sign for stocks. And while that doesn't necessarily mean the firm thinks a selloff is imminent, it's just another crack in the market's foundation that investors would be wise to watch.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bank of America Merrill Lynch</span></p><p class="caption">More S&amp;P 500 stocks are hitting 52-week lows than at any point since February 2016. That includes the periods around Brexit and the US presidential election.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>BAML's statistic is just one way of looking at the cracks forming under the surface of a market that appears unassailable at first glance, sitting just 1.3% from a record high. There are other warning signs flashing, including the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-today-benchmark-index-equal-weighted-trouble-under-surface-2017-8">benchmark's reliance on heavily-weighted companies</a> responsible for a big portion of share gains.</p><p>Chair Janet Yellen has also been saying that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-federal-reserve-fed-minutes-valuation-risks-warning-2017-8">Federal Reserve sees stock valuations as "elevated."</a> The Fed's rhetoric around stock prices became more pointed at its July meeting, indicating that it's become a growing worry for the central bank. The S&amp;P 500 has risen 9.4% this year.</p><p>The combined effect of these factors has investment managers at LPL Financial thinking about positioning themselves a little more defensively, at least for the time being - although the firm remains constructive further into the future.</p><p>"The risks have begun to stack up," <a href="https://lplfinancial.lpl.com/content/dam/lpl-www/PDF/Burt_White_Biography.pdf">Burt White</a>, the chief investment officer at LPL Financial, wrote in a client note. "We think it is a good time to consider taking a little risk off the table. But the longer-term outlook still looks good.
