AHMEDABAD: <keyword id="6371021" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Nano">Tata Nano</keyword>, once a symbol of aspiration for two-wheeler owners, will be revamped next year and launched as a 'Smart City Car', Girish Wagh, senior vice-president, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, said on August 13. 
 
The car suffered from an image problem leading to lower sales. 
 
"We are carrying out multiple interventions to improve the product as well as its image to ensure that the Nano lives up to its promise," Wagh said on the sidelines of launch of Zest, a compact sedan from the Tata stable with 29 new product features. 
 The adulation around the Nano brand disappeared when deliveries were hit owing to delay in the project. Cases of the car catching fire dampened the consumer sentiment around the brand. "Although fire incidents were either caused by foreign objects in the exhaust system or external manipulation with the car's electrical systems, over the period, we have rectified them," he said, adding that the company has refocused on the safety aspect in its subsequent model <keyword id="2012617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nano-Twist">Nano Twist</keyword>.

The company realized that there were significant number of cases where people would test-drive, book their Nano and then, drop out owing to negativity around the brand. "Social circles would dissuade them," Wagh said adding that the company is hoping to see a change in Nano's fortunes, post rebranding, including possible export to international markets. Tata Nano is manufactured at the company's Sanand facility on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

Charging infra improvement can reduce range anxiety for EVs: Tata Motors MD

New Delhi, Jan 1 () Tata Motors on Wednesday reported a 12 per cent decline in total vehicle sales in domestic market to 44,254 units in December.
 The company had sold 50,440 units in the same month in 2018, Tata Motors said in a statement.
 Total passenger vehicle sales last month stood at 12,785 units as against 14,260 units in the same month previous year, down 10 per cent, it added.
 Tata Motors President (Passenger Vehicles Business Unit) Mayank Pareek said, "Our focus in December has been to drive retail and minimise the network stock in order to facilitate a smooth transition to BS-VI."
 He further said, "Having almost completed our planned production and despatches of BS-IV, we will start moving to BS-VI production and despatches from January and step up our volumes in the coming months."
 Tata Motors said its commercial vehicle sales in December 2019 stood at 34,082 units as against 40,015 units in the year-ago month, down 15 per cent.
 Tata Motors President (Commercial Vehicles Business Unit) Girish Wagh said retail was higher than wholesales at 13 per cent in December with further stock reduction, as the company moves closer to BS-VI transition.
 "Enquiries continued to increase gradually, with fleet owners realising the economic benefits of replacement of their older vehicles now. Increasing enquiries and lower stocks augur well for future volumes and realisation, early indication of which can be seen in December," he added. RKL HRS

Tata Motors domestic sales fall 12 pc to 44,254 units in December

New Delhi, Automobile major <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> on Thursday launched a new range of intermediate and light commercial trucks -- Ultra Sleek T-Series -- which it hoped will fulfill the growing demand for such vehicles in the country. According to the company, fast economic recovery has galvanised the demand for commercial vehicles. "We are seeing a gradual economic recovery happening. Headline numbers are pointing towards this recovery," Girish Wagh, President, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors told <keyword id="105681" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IANS">IANS</keyword>. "There is both, upsurge in rural as well as urban demand." On Thursday, the company launched -- Ultra Sleek T-Series -- trucks which are aimed for urban transportation. As per the company, these trucks are available in three models - T.6, T.7 and T.9 with varied deck lengths from 10 to 20 feet to adapt to all the required applications. "Affirming its versatility, 'Ultra Sleek T-Series' has variants available in 4-tyre and 6-tyre combinations and varied deck lengths, the range is curated to suit diverse transportation needs," the company said in a statement. "It is equipped to cater to a wide variety of applications, such as transportation of e-commerce products, <keyword id="34523" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword>, industrial goods, <keyword id="6360114" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lpg">LPG</keyword> cylinders, and refrigerated containers for transportation of Covid-19 vaccine, pharmaceuticals as well as food items such as eggs, milk and fresh farm produce." The new truck range is powered by the <keyword id="2941346" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BS6">BS6</keyword> 4SPCR engine, with a 100hp power and a torque rating of 300Nm, the range provides optimum power and best-in-class fuel efficiency. "The range is fortified with a strong modular chassis designed for better durability, and radial tyres with low-rolling resistance to further boost the fuel economy," the company said.

Tata Motors launches new intermediate and light commercial trucks

Even as <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> has been looking for a new CEO for four months, two senior executives of the company, who had a crucial role in launching the Zest and the Bolt models in the passenger vehicle division, have resigned. 
 
The company confirmed that Ankush Arora, senior vice-president (commercial), and S Jayaraman, a senior executive of the product planning team, quit Tata Motors. 
 As the firm has been steadily losing market share, these launches will be crucial to drive its growth prospects. The models are part of the business revival strategy, planned by late <keyword id="152660" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Karl-Slym">Karl Slym</keyword>, the managing director who passed away earlier this year. 
 
 
The company has, however, played down the incident and said that there is “nothing out of the ordinary” in the development. 
 "Tata Motors has, in fact, one of the lowest attrition rates in the industry," a spokesperson said in an e-mail statement. "As far as plans ahead are concerned, <keyword id="155776" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ranjit-Yadav">Ranjit Yadav</keyword>, as the head of the passenger vehicle business, is directly involved in the launch of our new cars, supported by a strong sales &amp; marketing team. This is backed by the product planning and programme side, a strong team led by Tata Motors’ veteran Girish Wagh, for the last 16 months." 
 
The company has witnessed a number of changes in its management in the recent years. These resignations come at a time when the hunt for Slym's successor is still on. Just a few weeks before tendering his resignation, Arora had talked about overhauling the sales and marketing at Tata Motors. 
 A similar development had taken place just before the launch of <keyword id="28810" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nano">Nano</keyword> in 2009 when Rajiv Dube, president of the Tata Motors passenger vehicle division, left the company. 
 In another development, Stefan Berger, who was working with the group chairman, <keyword id="6356895" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Cyrus-Mistry">Cyrus Mistry</keyword>, following Slym's death, also left he company for ‘personal’ reason. 
 
 
Some of the company's zonal managers have joined other firms while many others could be looking to move on, according to inside sources.

2 Senior Execs Of Tata Motors Quit

Homegrown auto major <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> on Monday reported narrowing of consolidated net loss at ₹4,450.12 crore in the quarter ended June 2021. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of ₹8,443.98 crore in the same quarter last fiscal, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations during the period under review stood at ₹66,406.05 crore as against ₹31,983.06 crore in the year-ago period, the company added. British arm <keyword id="42034" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaguar">Jaguar</keyword> <keyword id="44719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Land-Rover">Land Rover</keyword> (<keyword id="45218" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JLR">JLR</keyword>) posted revenue of 5 billion pounds in the first quarter, up 73.7 per cent than Q1 in the prior year, the company said, adding JLR had a pre-tax loss of 110 million pounds. JLR retail sales in the first quarter were 1,24,537 vehicles, up 68.1 per cent year-on-year as sales continued to recover from the impact of the pandemic but shortage of semiconductor supplies constrained production. Commenting on the performance, JLR CEO Thierry Bollore said, "We are pleased to see a continuing positive recovery from the pandemic, with year-on-year growth in all regions, demonstrating the appeal of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles." Though the current environment continues to remain challenging, he said, "We will continue to adapt and manage elements that are within our control and ensure that Jaguar Land Rover is well-placed to respond to any further market developments." On a standalone basis, Tata Motors said its continuing business posted a net loss of ₹1,320.74 crore, putting up a better performance from a net loss of ₹2,190.64 crore in the year-ago period. Standalone total revenue from operations stood at ₹11,904.19 crore as against Rs 2,686.87 crore in the same period a year ago, the company said. "In Q1FY22 wholesales, including exports, increased 351.4 per cent to 1,14,170 units. The volumes across all segments significantly grew as compared to Q1 FY21, however they were lower than Q4 FY21 due to the lockdowns imposed due to the second wave of pandemic," Tata Motors said. Company Executive Director Girish <keyword id="1316783" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wagh">Wagh</keyword> said the successful implementation of a comprehensive 'Business Agility' plan enabled it to manage lockdowns effectively and also deliver competitive growth as markets reopened. "In the near term, we remain focused on fulfilling customer demands while driving all levers of the business to mitigate the unprecedented commodity inflation," he added. Looking beyond the short-term challenges, Wagh said, "We see significant opportunities to leverage the mega trends shaping the Indian automotive industry." The company recorded a new sales peak of 5,592 units of electric vehicles in the third quarter of FY22, which is a growth of 345% year-on-year. Most auto manufacturers reported their worst sales for the first quarter in a decade, and the trouble seems to continue. Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and Hero Motocorp have all cut production to align with the tapering demand. Falling sales for top manufacturers Indian auto manufacturers have reported a continuous decline in sales for over 11 months now. In August, Tata Motors saw a massive decline of 58%, Maruti Suzuki’s sales fell by 33%, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra fell by 25% while Honda’s fell by 51%. For Maruti, a 71% drop was seen in the sales of its mini car segment (Alto and old WagonR) in August alone.

 “My belief is that we are near the bottom of the downward cycle and the economy, and <keyword id="47168" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Car-sales">car sales</keyword> should start to accelerate in the near future,” Marutii Suzuki’s chairman RC Bhargava <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/auto-industry-is-near-bottom-of-downward-cycle-maruti-suzuki-chairman-bhargava/article29267803.ece">said at the company’s annual general meeting earlier in August.</a> Maruti Suzuki also slashed 3,000 contractual jobs. Meanwhile, Tata Motors too agreed that it’s ‘challenging’ time for the industry. “Subdued demand sentiment due to poor freight availability, lower freight rates and general slowdown in economy continued to hamper the commercial vehicle demand. System stock reduction through retail focus and aligning production, will continue to be our approach, while cautiously monitoring the market, in these challenging times,” said Girish Wagh, President, Commercial Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors.

 Increased production costs with BS VI norms The troubles of auto manufacturers are far from over. Auto manufacturers also have to comply with BS-VI norms by March 2020. After this, the sale of older models will not be allowed, which is not good news for those holding onto huge inventory. It also means that the car companies have to invest in switching technologies. “The additional components and design changes will raise production costs by 10%-15%. This could squeeze automakers' profitability in FY21 if automakers are not able to fully pass on costs to buyers,” said a report by credit rating agency Fitch earlier in August. Festive season coupled with government’s push brings hope This month, Tata Motors sold just over 7,000 passenger vehicles. They are now desperately hoping that the upcoming festive season to revive sales with special offers, and several special editions to their current cars. Maruti Suzuki also launched its latest offering – XL6 in August. They are also trading sights on the government for help. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman too recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance-minister-nirmala-sitharaman-announces-relief-for-the-indian-auto-industry/articleshow/70806777.cms">announced</a> much needed changes for the auto industry. “BS-IV vehicles purchased until March 30, 2020 will be allowed to run on the roads for the duration of the registration," the Finance Minister said. Any vehicle that is bought from now until March 2020 will be eligible for 30% depreciation, double that of the current rate of 15%, she said. Added to that, the government itself made the first move and decided to replace their own old vehicles, throwing its own austerity measures to wind.
