The influencers behind it have built a brand off of their flashy lifestyles — private jets, supercars, luxury watches, and endless vacations — and the alluring idea that anyone can "make money anywhere in the world, by doing one simple action... connecting to WiFi."Beyond dropshipping, it pitched cryptocurrency, real estate, business bootcamps, and investments related to the Employee Retention Credit, a pandemic-era tax credit that has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.foxrothschild.com/publications/irs-increases-pressure-on-businesses-that-claimed-employee-retention-tax-credits">susceptible to alleged scams</a>, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/dont-fall-for-employee-retention-credit-scams-youtube-video-text-script">IRS</a>.Along the way, the group has been accused of fraud numerous times, including in an ongoing lawsuit in Florida involving more than 30 disgruntled former investors. In several cases, employees who were alerted to inappropriate relationships between colleagues and students <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rosemead-high-eric-burgess-sexual-misconduct-investigation">failed to report them</a> to child protective services despite being mandated to do so under state law.A document reviewed by BI shows that the scope of the state's investigation includes district "policies relating to sexual abuse, assault, and harassment, as well as its compliance with laws and regulations concerning mandated reporting of suspected child abuse, sexual abuse, assault, harassment, and related hiring and training requirements." Multiple people familiar with the investigation, whom BI is not naming because they were directed not to discuss it, described the probe as focused in part on whether Rosemead administrators properly handled allegations of educator abuse that spanned decades.Investigating a local school district is a rare step for the top law enforcement office in the state. The only investigation the attorney general has made public related to sexual abuse by educators involved another Southern California district, Redlands Unified, which concluded earlier this year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.redlandsdailyfacts.com/2024/05/29/california-ag-redlands-unified-systematically-violated-laws-protecting-kids-from-sexual-abuse/">when the office found</a> that the district had "systemically violated laws in place to protect against and address complaints related to sexual assault, harassment, and abuse." Redlands agreed to a <a target="_blank" href="https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/attachments/press-docs/Notice%20of%20Entry%20of%20Judgment%20-%2024STCV13334.pdf">judgment</a> in June that subjects the district to five years of state oversight.People familiar with the El Monte investigation say it is being led by a division of the attorney general's office called the Bureau of Children's Justice, which was created in 2015 while Kamala Harris was attorney general. A spokesperson for Attorney General Rob Bonta declined to comment.BI previously identified numerous instances where tips from faculty, students, parents, and community members led to cursory investigations by Rosemead administrators and district officials, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rosemead-high-eric-burgess-sexual-misconduct-investigation">often concluding with</a> a teacher being allowed to return to the classroom — where, records show, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rosemead-high-secrecy-sexual-misconduct-flourished-2023-9">fresh abuse allegations emerged</a>. In a deposition last year, the district's head of human resources, Robin Torres, said of the district's investigation of one teacher's relationship with a student, "it appears that there wasn't follow-through." After reviewing district records related to sexual harassment complaints from multiple students about another teacher, Torres said, "I would have expected to find additional information on these allegations."Those familiar with the state's investigation said it is in the preliminary stages and remains ongoing. District Superintendent Edward Zuniga did not comment on the investigation. "The health and safety of our students is our top priority," he said by email. The letter directs staff to preserve any documents "potentially relevant to the investigation," including memos, emails, voicemails, diaries, text messages, and meeting minutes.<h2 id="36842104-3beb-4e2e-b670-9f8a052feae5">Four lawsuits and counting</h2>In May, lawyer Michael Carrillo filed a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/los-angeles-lawsuit-alleges-rampant-sexual-misconduct-by-teachers-2024-5">lawsuit</a> on behalf of three former Rosemead High students who claim that school officials have created a "toxic" culture on campus where "sexual abuse by educators is rampant." During a press conference announcing the suit, Carrillo called on the Bureau of Children's Justice and the US Department of Education to investigate what he described as a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25248678-bureau-of-childrens-justice-letter-may-2024">systemic failure</a>" to report child abuse within the district. Carrillo declined to comment.Three other lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by former educators have been filed against the El Monte district in recent months. In preliminary responses, lawyers for the district have denied most of the claims, while moving to have other claims dismissed on procedural grounds. In the first case filed by Carrillo, lawyers for the district argued that because the abuse allegations involved three different educators, the claims should be separated; a superior court judge ordered the plaintiffs to amend their complaint.In a case naming the district and special education teacher Edwin Reyes-Villegas, a former Rosemead student identified as a Jane Doe alleges that Reyes-Villegas sexually harassed and molested her when she was 17. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25232843-jane-doe-sexual-abuse-survivor-lawsuit-filed-against-el-monte-union-high-school-district-and-edwin-reyes-villegas">the complaint</a> — filed by lawyers at the Manly, Stewart &amp; Finaldi law firm, which also represented <a target="_blank" href="https://www.redlandsdailyfacts.com/2024/04/25/federal-review-slams-redlands-unifieds-failures-to-address-sexual-abuse-complaints-by-students/">37 plaintiffs</a> who filed sexual abuse claims against the Redlands district, resulting in settlements totaling more than $45 million — the girl, who has autism, was "especially vulnerable" to abuse by Reyes-Villegas. The complaint says that abuse occurred during and after school and included the exchange of "sexually laden communications."Her attorney, Jenny Louro, said she intends to file subpoenas with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to see whether the district notified state authorities after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24487885-edwin-villegas-notice-of-administrative-leave-from-rosemead-high-school-emuhsd-october-4-2023">placing Reyes Villegas on paid leave</a> a year ago. Reyes Villegas did not respond to requests for comment; records show his credential remains intact.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25232853-3-john-does-sexual-abuse-survivor-lawsuit-filed-against-el-monte-union-high-school-district-and-herbert-ortizmonroy-september-2024">In another case filed by the same firm</a>, a trio of former students who trained to join Rosemead High's championship wrestling team sued the El Monte district and their former coach, Herbert Ortiznmonroy. The lawsuit claims that Ortizmonroy repeatedly molested the boys, one of whom joined the Rosemead team, and that district administrators failed to supervise him and enabled "a culture of sexual abuse and harassment that discouraged reporting." Ortizmonroy, who also went by Coach Ortiz at Rosemead, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/former-wrestling-coach-sentenced-to-nearly-four-years-in-prison-on-sex-charges/">was sentenced to prison</a> in 2013 after he pleaded no contest to charges of oral copulation of a minor and committing a lewd act on a child; he remains incarcerated and did not respond to a request for comment.An <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25252893-july-2024-sexual-abuse-survivor-lawsuit-filed-by-9-jane-does-against-el-monte-union-high-school-district">additional case</a> that Carrillo <a target="_blank" href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-07-24/nine-former-rosemead-high-school-students-sue-allege-sexual-abuse">filed in June</a> on behalf of nine other plaintiffs, all Jane Does, alleges that "the improper handling of sexual abuse, molestation, and harassment allegations was, and is, a systemic issue" in the El Monte district.One former Rosemead teacher named in the case, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/40-years-of-sexual-misconduct-at-rosemead-california-high-school-2023-9">Alex Rai</a>, had his credential revoked over "misconduct" earlier this year, records show. Rai declined to comment.Meanwhile, Dominique Boubion, a lawyer who works with Carrillo, told BI that she is preparing to file another lawsuit against the El Monte district soon. California's attorney general is investigating a school district over its handling of Rosemead High sex abuse claims

New Delhi: The <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> on Wednesday said it will hear on September 17 the appeal of US-based creditor Glas Trust Company LLC against a judgment of the <keyword id="19916400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nclat" source="keywords">NCLAT</keyword>, which had stayed insolvency proceedings against ed-tech firm BYJU's and approved its Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the <keyword id="19901245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="keywords">BCCI</keyword>. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was urged by a battery of lawyers that the plea be heard urgently keeping in mind the subsequent developments in the case. The plea was mentioned by senior advocate NK Kaul, appearing for the ed-tech major, that the case needed to be heard at the earliest. The submission was supported by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the BCCI, and senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi, also appearing for the ed-tech firm. Kaul said another plea in the case has also been filed and that is listed for hearing on September 17 and hence, the present plea be either heard on that day or the hearings in both the cases be advanced to this Friday. "We will hear both the pleas on September 17," the CJI said. Senior advocate Shayam Divan, appearing for the US-based creditor, said let the matters be heard together on September 17. Earlier on August 22, the bench had refused to pass an interim order to ensure that the committee of creditors (CoC) does not hold any meeting in pursuance of the insolvency proceedings against the embattled ed-tech firm. It had listed the plea for a final hearing on August 27. The bench had said the developments, which may take place in the meantime, can be negated if it finds there was no merit in the appeal of the US-based creditor against the judgment of appellate insolvency tribunal NCLAT. The plea was mentioned earlier also on August 20 by Byju's and the BCCI and the top court had then also refused to pass an interim order to restrain the Insolvency Resolution Professional (IRP) from constituting a committee of creditors (CoC) in the insolvency proceedings against the ed-tech firm. In a major setback to Byju's, the top court had on August 14 stayed the verdict of NCLAT, setting aside the insolvency proceedings against the ed-tech major and approving its Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the Indian cricket board. The August 2 verdict of the NCLAT had come as a huge relief for Byju's as it had effectively put its founder Byju Raveendran back in control. The top court, however, had prima facie termed the NCLAT verdict as "unconscionable" and stayed its operation while issuing notices to Byju's and others on the appeal of the ed-tech firm's US-based creditor against the judgment of the insolvency appellate tribunal. The case stemmed from Byju's default on a Rs 158.9 crore payment related to a sponsorship deal with the BCCI. The top court had directed the BCCI to keep a sum of Rs 158 crore it had received from Byju's after a settlement in a separate escrow account till further orders. "Issue notice. Pending further orders there shall be a stay of the impugned order of August 2 of NCLAT. In the meantime, BCCI shall maintain the amount of Rs 158 crore, which shall be realised in pursuance of a settlement, in a separate escrow account until further orders," the bench had said. The NCLAT had approved the Rs 158.9 crore dues settlement with the BCCI and set aside the insolvency proceedings against Byju's. Byju's had entered into a "Team Sponsor Agreement" with the BCCI in 2019. Under the agreement, the ed-tech firm got exclusive rights to display its brand on the Indian cricket team's kit and some other benefits. Byju's had to pay a sponsorship fee. The company met its obligations till the middle of 2022 but defaulted on subsequent payments of Rs 158.9 crore. After insolvency proceedings were initiated, Byju's entered into a settlement with the BCCI. On July 16, the Bengaluru bench of the <keyword id="19902197" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-company-law-tribunal" source="keywords">National Company Law Tribunal</keyword> (NCLT) had admitted 'Think and Learn', Byju's parent company, to the insolvency resolution process on a plea filed by the BCCI over default in payment of outstanding dues of almost Rs 158.9 crore. While suspending the board of the ed-tech firm, the NCLT had appointed an interim resolution professional to run the operations of the company, suspended the company's board of directors, and brought it under moratorium by freezing its assets. The US-based lenders suspected that the settlement amount was being diverted from the credit they had extended to Byju's.

Gen. Gordon 'Skip' Davis, who was NATO's deputy assistant secretary-general for its Defense Investment Division, told BI.That division provides, among other things, technical, financial, and procedural expertise related to aerospace capabilities.Davis said Ukraine's F-16s "are making a difference now" and said when more arrive, that "will help them make more of a difference."Roughly twenty F-16s are expected to be delivered to Ukraine by the year's end.But he said the jets have "got some issues with range and with vulnerability" and that "even the best systems we can put on those aircraft will still not make them superior to some of the Russian best aircraft."To date, Ukraine's allies have given it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ukraine-could-get-air-superiority-use-f-16s-experts-2024-7">older F-16 models</a>, which means they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/f-16-jets-will-help-defend-ukrainian-cities-from-russian-bombardment/">are more limited in ability</a>, including having weaker radar systems.<div type="image" title="Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in front of the first F-16 fighter jets received by Ukraine on August 4, 2024." height="2919" width="4378" msid="113875550" hostid="261" sizebytes="343948"></div>In contrast, Davis said that Russia has "several hundred of some pretty advanced aircraft," citing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-su-35s-2017-2">the SU-35S</a>, a modern jet designed to hunt US stealth aircraft, the Su-30SM, a jet that made its maiden flight in 2012, and the MiG-31, a supersonic interceptor aircraft.Many carry <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-air-force-missiles-still-keep-ukraine-jets-at-bay-2023-2">R-37M air-to-air missiles</a> that have a longer range than Ukraine's US-provided AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles.Some of these jets have been seen in Ukraine, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-says-shot-down-russia-su30-fighter-jet-black-sea-2024-9">some have reportedly been shot down</a>.All of them pose a threat to Ukraine's F-16s, Davis said, along with Russia's formidable batteries of surface-to-air missiles.Those Russian jets, he added, "have missiles and radar that can reach out and attack the F-16s." "So that's an issue, and that will remain an issue," Davis said.<h2 id="9bd4d956-7e15-432e-99bb-1b75cf8aefc1">Ukraine's new jets are old</h2>Ukraine's F-16s, which <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-faces-questions-f16-downed-friendly-fire-patriot-missile-2024-9">cost</a> between $20 million and $70 million each, are of an older generation than many of the F-16s in service in other fleets, and many of its allies are now upgrading their planes to F-35s.The Wall Street Journal <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20240829145331/https://www.wsj.com/world/ukrainian-f-16-is-destroyed-in-crash-4f6d66f6">reported</a> in August that many of Ukraine's F-16s "are secondhand and have decades of flying time already."Michael Bohnert, an air warfare expert at the RAND Corporation, described them to BI as "older airframes with not a lot of life left," though he said that "doesn't mean they're bad."But he warned that "as planes get older, they do get more problems."<div type="image" title="South Korea F-35 F-16 fighter jet" height="1000" width="1400" msid="113875558" hostid="261" sizebytes="96084"></div>Ukaine's allies have given the F-16s some advanced systems, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.defenseone.com/technology/2024/08/ukraines-f-16s-are-fighting-help-usaf-electronic-warfare-unit/399096/">including</a> the US Air Force loading them with new electronic warfare capabilities.Davis said that step was "important for the F-16 maneuverability so they can at least get as close as possible, identify ground air systems and incoming missiles, and then jam them and react and protect the aircraft."Ukraine's F-16s could also be made more powerful.The US is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-f-16s-more-strike-range-beyond-atacms-us-jassms-2024-9">reportedly deciding whether to send AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, or JASSMs, to Ukraine</a>, which would give its F-16s a longer strike range. And it decided last month to send <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-long-range-glide-bombs-gives-f-16s-new-punch-2024-9">Joint Standoff Weapon glide-bombs</a> that have a 70-mile range.<div type="image" title="An F-16 releases a JASSM missile." height="1080" width="1920" msid="113875556" hostid="261" sizebytes="55574"></div>But David warned that the F-16s are still at a disadvantage."The bottom line is you can give the F-16s the maximum capability for munitions, electronic warfare capabilities, they're going to still be somewhat vulnerable to grounded defense and some of the most advanced fighters from Russia," he said.<h2 id="fc69aa70-037e-49c7-8aad-6694d606f8b4">Aircraft roles are limited</h2>The disadvantage Ukraine's F-16s face is somewhat negated by the nature of the war and how aircraft are being used.The deployment of air defenses by both Russia and Ukraine often keeps aircraft far from the front lines, making dogfights and air-to-air battles exceedingly unlikely.<div type="image" title="Two Russian S-400 air defense systems on the back of trucks are parked in a snowy field with some trees around them." height="1080" width="1920" msid="113875557" hostid="261" sizebytes="97208"></div>But Russia's more advanced — and more numerous — aircraft arsenal also means it has an advantage in using them to launch missiles.Fortunately for Ukraine, Russia <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-advanced-aircraft-not-over-ukraine-thinking-nato-war-experts-2024-7">has kept many of its advanced aircraft out of the heavy fighting in Ukraine</a>, preferring to fire long-range missiles from Russian airspace or batter Ukrainian positions with glide-bombs dropped from beyond the reach of Ukraine's air defenses.Air warfare experts told BI that this is likely in response to Ukraine shooting down many of its aircraft, and also that Russia likely has a future conflict with NATO countries in mind.But Russia could decide at any time to use those aircraft more heavily.Ukraine also appears to be keeping its initial F-16s far from Russia's powerful air defense systems.Davis said that the best thing Ukraine's allies can do to help with the mismatch is to allow Ukraine to go after Russia's air defenses.Many of Ukraine's allies, including the US, do not allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons they've supplied to hit targets on Russian soil, which means weapons systems can be placed in areas where they can fire at Ukraine without being targeted themselves.Air warfare experts previously told BI that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-f16s-less-effective-russia-defenses-missiles-cant-strike-experts-2024-9">this makes the F-16s less effective</a>, as they are more vulnerable in the air and less able to fly closer to the front.<h2 id="24c80c14-125c-4319-b437-05d2bbd0cbdc">Ukraine's F-16 power is restricted for now</h2>Ukraine's F-16 fleet is also being impacted by other factors, like their small numbers, training bottlenecks in the West, and slow delivery.<div type="image" title="A fighter jet on the ground, its wings covered in camo netting." height="3775" width="5663" msid="113875559" hostid="261" sizebytes="1117486"></div>Denmark, Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands have pledged more than 85 F-16s to Ukraine, with an unspecified number delivered in August.But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in May that his country needed about 120 to 130 advanced fighter aircraft to challenge Russia in the air.The jets also arrived much later than Ukraine wanted — which was shortly after the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Even before they'd arrived, air warfare experts told BI that they did not expect them to be a game changer, especially with their small initial numbers.But they said the F-16s would help Ukraine defend itself from incoming drone and missile attacks, help to replenish lost aircraft numbers, and direct Russian missiles away from other targets.They also described Ukraine getting its first F-16s as an early step in building up Ukraine's air force for the long term — something that US officials <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/article/3553946/">have also said</a>.According to Davis: "Right now, we're still in pretty early days of their employment."But, he said, the "bigger picture is more will be coming this year."

But zoom out to enormous scales like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scientists-james-webb-telescope-megacluster-galaxies-magnifying-glass-discovery-2023-11">clusters of galaxies</a> spanning billions of light years across, and the laws of Einstein's gravity theory appear to change."It's almost as if gravity itself stops perfectly matching Einstein's theory," Robin Wen, a recent University of Waterloo graduate, said in a university <a target="_blank" href="https://uwaterloo.ca/news/media/cosmic-glitch-gravity">press release</a>.<div type="image" title="General relativity diagram" height="1322" width="2266" msid="110279519" hostid="261" sizebytes="265646"></div>Wen is part of a collaboration between the University of Waterloo and the University of British Columbia who are on the hunt to solve the mystery, calling this discrepancy in Einstein's theory a "cosmic glitch."Their new study, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, suggests that gravity becomes about 1% weaker at very large scales. If gravity behaved according to Einstein's theory, then this 1% difference shouldn't exist.Cosmologists won't be doing away with general relativity anytime soon. It's still a strikingly accurate framework for understanding gravity at smaller scales."It's not like we're breaking how your GPS works, or a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fall-inside-black-hole-nasa-video-shows-what-looks-like-2024-5">black hole</a>. We were only trying to see if there's any deviation at the largest possible scales," Wen told Business Insider.If this glitch truly exists, it could help cosmologists explain some of the greatest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronomers-james-webb-solve-mystery-supernova-center-neutron-star-2024-2">mysteries of the universe</a>.<h2 id="34b94591-b857-4115-94ff-c45e585e3487">Easing cosmological tension</h2><div type="image" title="Planck_and_the_Cosmic_microwave_background" height="3500" width="5645" msid="110279520" hostid="261" sizebytes="3343468"></div>The research team was combing through data of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/universe-expansion-crisis-cosmology-new-physics-hubble-constant-2019-10">cosmic microwave background</a> when they discovered this apparent glitch.The cosmic microwave background is a vast expanse of lingering radiation that was left behind by the Big Bang. Scientists use it to understand the earliest stages of the universe like how the first galaxies formed and what happened immediately after the Big Bang.Wen and his colleagues used a model — based on fundamental physical laws like Einstein's theory of general relativity — and compared their model's prediction of what the CMB data should look like with observational CMB data.Their scientific model didn't match the observations — what we actually see in the distant universe.However, when they tweaked Einstein's theory to account for a 1% gravity deficit, their model aligned more closely with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-chandra-xray-space-telescope-nasa-might-defund-2024-4">observational data</a>, Wen told BI over email.A 1% adjustment may not sound like a big deal, but it's enough to suggest that Einstein's theory may need a rethink. And what's more, this glitch may help us better understand some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/we-live-inside-cosmic-void-breaks-cosmology-laws-2024-5">confusing behavior in the universe</a>.<div type="image" title="universe big bang time expansion" height="4000" width="5760" msid="110279521" hostid="261" sizebytes="566960"></div>The cosmos, as we understand it, is filled with tensions. Sometimes, different measurements of the same phenomenon don't agree with each other. One example of this is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/universe-expansion-crisis-cosmology-new-physics-hubble-constant-2019-10">the Hubble Tension</a> — a problem that's puzzled astronomers for years.The Hubble Tension refers to conflicting measurements of the expansion rate of the universe. According to our standard model of physics, the expansion rate of the universe should be the same everywhere. However, observations of the nearby universe suggest that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-universe-is-expanding-faster-than-we-thought-2016-6">expansion rate is faster</a> than regions of the distant universe. Astronomers have proposed multiple possible explanations but haven't settled on one, yet.Now, with this cosmic glitch, there's a new explanation on the table.A 1% weaker gravity at large scales could reduce the Hubble Tension by bringing the universe's expansion rate closer to measurements from local observations, said Niayesh Afshordi, study co-author and professor of astrophysics at the University of Waterloo, in a recent YouTube <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOctev5cUCI">interview</a>.<h2 id="51a7f029-9474-404d-b089-7edce6a45d44">Thinking outside the box</h2><div type="image" title="Galaxy cluster IDCS J1426" height="1289" width="1719" msid="110279522" hostid="261" sizebytes="78072"></div>The fact that this cosmic glitch could potentially help astronomers resolve the Hubble tension is a good sign that it may truly exist. But this study doesn't offer definitive proof of a 1% gravity deficit at large scales, Wen said.For now, there's still a chance that this glitch could be the result of statistical error. "With future data in the coming 10 years, we should expect to see if this is actually a real detection, or just fluctuation due to your statistical power," Wen said.Valerio Faraoni, professor of physics and interim dean of science at Bishop's University, told BI it's reasonable to think the glitch could exist because general relativity has not been tested in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/esa-euclid-space-telescope-images-horsehead-nebula-perseus-cluster-photos-2023-11">the distant universe</a>.So, "it's quite possible, at least in principle, that we don't understand gravity on the larger scale," said Faraoni, who wasn't a part of the study.He thinks that in order to resolve conflicts between predictions and observations of our universe, we need to think outside the box. And this cosmic glitch study does exactly that."We probably need something outrageous," he said. "It does look exotic, it does look strange. DESI measures the effects of dark energy on the expansion rate of the universe, and has created the largest 3D map of the cosmos to date.Moreover, DESI has found that, like gravity, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/esa-euclid-space-telescope-images-horsehead-nebula-perseus-cluster-photos-2023-11">dark energy</a> doesn't behave the way astronomers expect at large cosmological scales. Wen wants to find out whether these two "glitches" are somehow linked, which would provide even more evidence for a need to tweak general relativity.But even he is skeptical of general relativity's limitations. "If you asked me to bet on something, I might bet on GR still. GR works so well, right? For the alternative models, it's hard to tell at this stage," he said.

A 'cosmic glitch' in the universe is forcing astronomers to rethink Einstein's theory of relativity

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US surgeon general wants to attach an official government warning to social media platforms.</li><li>But social media experts are mixed on how whether a warning could help curb kids' mental health woes.</li></ul>The US surgeon general on Monday proposed a bold new step in fighting social media's negative effects on children, suggesting the government affix social media platforms with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surgeon-general-social-media-warning-label-mental-health-crisis-children-2024-6">surgeon general's warning</a> about the inherent risks of being too online.But social media experts and researchers are mixed on just how effective such a move would be.In a New York Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/17/opinion/social-media-health-warning.html">op-ed</a> published this week, Dr. Vivek Murthy called for government <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-surgeon-general-warning-labels-instagram-tiktok-facebook-snapchat-2024-6">warning labels</a> on social media platforms, citing recent studies that point to kids' worsening mental health in an increasingly digital world."Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-social-media-need-to-take-responsibility-for-misinformation-murthy-2021-7">Murthy</a> wrote, citing a 2019 American Medical Association study and a 2023 Gallup poll.While scientific researchers are still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-doesnt-necessarily-harm-mental-health-oxford-study-2023-11">hashing out</a> the exact impacts social media has on children, Titania Jordan, chief parent officer at parental controls company Bark Technologies, said parents need only look around to see the ways in which kids are suffering."The rates at which young children are struggling with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/native-tribes-sue-meta-google-tiktok-teen-social-media-addiction-2024-4">suicidal ideation</a>, exposure to graphic sexual content, drug, and alcohol-related content — dying because of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-instagram-drug-dealers-fentanyl-counterfeit-pills-teen-deaths-2021-3">fentanyl-laced pills</a> they've bought on Snapchat — the bullying, the depression, the disordered eating, the predators, the violence — all of those are way higher than anyone would imagine," Jordan told Business Insider.Last year, Murthy made a similar <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-media-splintering-new-less-toxic-era-meta-bluesky-twitter-2023-10">social media</a>-related plea, issuing a surgeon general's advisory that urged Americans to pay attention to what he deemed a public health issue. Since then, Meta founder <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-senate-hearing-child-exploitation-social-media-law-2024-1">Mark Zuckerberg has testified</a> before Congress about the company's child safety policies, and legislation focused on online safety for kids continues to work its way through Congress.But little has actually changed, Jordan said. And kids themselves are increasingly aware of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-tiktok-user-quit-mental-health-productivity-us-ban-2024-4">social media's potential harms</a>. According to one August 2022 <a target="_blank" href="https://digitalwellnesslab.org/wp-content/uploads/Pulse-Survey_Adolescent-Attitudes-Effects-and-Experiences.pdf">study</a>, almost half of all adolescents said social media makes them feel bad about their bodies."A warning label via a pop-up on an app isn't going to be the end-all-be-all to keeping kids safe online, but at least it starts the conversation and levels the playing field," Jordan said.<h2 id="6e85602f-a5ee-4e45-bb56-454ed7987179">A mixed-bag</h2>Karen North, a professor of digital and social media at the University of Southern California, is skeptical about whether a surgeon general's warning would do much of anything to curb kids' mental health woes."It's far more complicated than putting a warning on something that is clearly dangerous, like cigarettes or alcohol, because social media is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-does-social-media-affect-teenagers">real mixed bag,</a>" North said. "It's a true double-edged sword.While social media has, without question, negatively affected scores of children, many young people have also used the platforms to build community, befriending people they would never have had the chance to meet in "the real world," North said.She questioned which platforms would be subject to the surgeon general's warning. Instagram and TikTok, certainly. But what about something like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/duolingo-tiktok-social-media-manager-shares-strategy-2021-11">Duolingo</a>? And what exactly would the warning say, North wondered, noting that social media is rarely exclusively harmful.Still, a warning — which could only be implemented with Congress' approval — could have marginal benefits in keeping the conversation around mental health top of mind, North said.But there's something even more powerful in fighting social media's perils, online experts said: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-raising-gen-alpha-kids-social-media-ai-2024-3">Parenting</a>.<h2 id="38ac7a50-5b7d-46b7-9ced-f2b700838c62">Proactive parenting</h2>For most kids, social media use begins at home. Parents set the rules, purchase the smartphones, and model social media behavior."We as parents and caregivers have to say no and delay," Jordan said, echoing Murthy's call to restrict kids' social media use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kids-should-be-banned-from-smartphones-until-13-french-report-2024-5">until high school.</a>Kids often point to feeling left out without smartphones or access to social media, said Jordan, who is a parent. She suggested parents resist the urge to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ditching-smartphone-healthier-living-dumb-phone-family-2024-2">bend to their children's will</a> and instead encourage their kids to focus on spending time with their peers in the physical world.But what about when social media facilitates connection in the physical world? North, who is also a parent, said when her daughter was in middle school, the tween's peers exclusively used Snapchat to make plans and organize meetups. Without the app, her daughter would have been left in the dark on social gatherings."Someone once said you have to give your kids the tools for success in the world that you've placed them in," she told BI.Instead of restricting kids' access to social media entirely, North suggested parents take an active role in teaching their children how to use social media as safely as possible."We hand over social media to our kids at a young age, but we don't do the same thing with crossing the street," North said. "We take them, time after time, holding their hand and pointing to the stop sign. We tell them to look both ways. We go to great lengths to teach kids how to cross."The same should go for using social media, she argued."Parents need to teach their kids how to cross the virtual street," North said.Are you a parent who has struggled with your children's social media use? <ul class="summary-list"><li>Finding a therapist can be tricky and time-consuming.</li><li>But staying with a therapist who isn't a fit can be a waste of money and even bad for your health.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-to-find-a-therapist">Finding a therapist</a> who works for you can take time and effort, from searching ones that fit your schedule to figuring out your insurance. Naturally, when you find one who's relatively affordable and can generally treat what you're looking for help with, it's tempting to stay.But there are many reasons why a therapist might not be a great fit for you, or it's time to take a break."I think we've done a better job as a society about access," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.twochairs.com/therapists/colleen-marshall-lmft">Dr. Colleen Marshall</a>, LMFT and VP of the therapy service Two Chairs, told Business Insider. "But what we haven't done a great job at is really focus on the quality of the care you're getting."While there might be many therapists to choose from, Marshall said only about <a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30566197/">20% actually measure progress in sessions</a> — something she believes is vital to improvement and recovery.Marshall explained some of the common reasons a therapist might be a bad fit for you (or in some cases, for anyone). She also shared how to tell if you're ready to quit therapy in general if you've been going for a while.<h2>1. Therapy should push your boundaries — but not too far</h2>To an extent, proper therapy can be a little uncomfortable, Marshall said. You might have to be vulnerable about a topic you've never opened up about or make more of an effort in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/cognitive-behavioral-therapy">cognitive behavioral therapy</a>.Marshall said the key is your therapist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-right-way-to-set-boundaries-with-people-2023-10">respecting your boundaries</a> — and making it clear that there's a benefit to their approach."It's a lot about you feeling safe," she said. "You feel taken care of, so if they're having you look at something hard or pushing you a little bit, it's for your own best interest." She likened it to the feeling of a good coach — someone who encourages you to dig deeper and try harder, without unnecessarily pushing you past your limit.<h2>2. They seem checked out</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/psychologist-realized-problem-toxic-relationships-2024-2">Therapists can have problems</a>, too. "They can start having substance use issues or their own mental health struggles," Marshall said.If your therapist seems intoxicated or just out of it in sessions, it's worth listening to your gut. Because a therapist who seems depleted or zoned out is probably not going to be able to help you.<h2>3. You get along well but don't fully click</h2>You might have a perfectly cordial relationship with your therapist but not have much of a spark with them. As a result, you might feel bored or even misunderstood.If you are starting to feel frustrated at the end of, before, or during sessions, take an inventory.What style of therapy are you looking for, and has that changed? "Do you want someone who's expressive?" Marshall, whose company match-makes clients with therapists, said. "Do you want someone who is more controlling in the session? Do you want to process more? Do you want homework?"Perhaps the style is right, but you're looking for a different perspective. Marshall said identity can be really important. For instance, if you're a first-generation child of Chinese immigrants, you might seek out a therapist with a similar background who can better understand some of those cultural nuances.If nothing else, she said you shouldn't feel like your therapist is judging or misunderstanding you. If so, that's a sign that you simply don't click.Marshall, whose company match-makes clients with therapists, feels many people skip crucial vibe-checking steps when they're looking for a therapist in the first place. Then, when they have zero chemistry with a therapist their colleague recommended, they blame themselves or stick with someone they just don't connect with."People ask their friends and family for a referral," she said. "But it is like me asking my sister for a referral of who she's dating. I don't want to date who my sister dates."<h2>4. You don't notice a positive difference in your life</h2>Marshall believes therapists should track their clients' progress via surveys like the <a target="_blank" href="https://med.stanford.edu/fastlab/research/imapp/msrs/_jcr_content/main/accordion/accordion_content3/download_256324296/file.res/PHQ9%20id%20date%2008.03.pdf">Patient Health Questionaire</a> (PHQ-9). But seeing as not everyone does, it's good practice to take note of any changes on your own.Even if it's small at first, incremental improvement indicates that the therapy is working for you, she said. For example, if you're in therapy for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-depression#signs-and-symptoms-">depression</a>, knowing that you went from leaving your house once a week to going for a walk every day is a sign in the right direction.Lack of progress can also guide you to therapy that suits you better. If you have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-have-relationship-ocd-heres-how-i-deal-with-it-2023-1">relationship OCD</a>, talk therapy can sometimes lead to more rumination; in some cases, behavioral therapy geared towards <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subtle-signs-you-might-have-ocd-per-psychologist-2024-3">OCD symptoms</a> may feel like a more effective strategy to help you move forward."If we're not seeing the symptoms that you came in for getting better, then something's wrong," Marshall said.<h2>5. It's not them; it's therapy</h2>If you've been going to therapy for a while and feel better, it's actually healthy to quit, Marshall said."Some folks think you go to therapy forever, and it's just sort of like a support system that you have," she said, rather than having time-limited goals. "People should be able to go to therapy, learn whatever they need to learn, leave, go live their life, and then come back again if something else happens. They shouldn't be dependent on therapy their whole life."If you try to quit, a therapist might bring up that you have more work to do. Technically, Marshall said, there's always more to explore with therapy. But it depends on your goals."Ask 'What specifically have we not accomplished that you think we still need to accomplish?'" she said. For example, your therapist might say you could work on intimacy in your marriage, but you don't feel that's a crucial issue right now.A good therapist will leave the door open for you to come back if you ever need to.

Further, the DGCA said there were instances of exceeding duty periods, wrongly marked training records and overlapping duties. On March 1, the regulator issued a show cause notice to Air India with respect to the violations. "The operator submitted its response to the show cause notice, which was not found satisfactory. Pursuant to the non-satisfactory response submitted by the operator, a fine of Rs 80,00,000 has been imposed on the operator," the release said.
