The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced Dream11 as the official partner for the IPL. In a four-year exclusive contract, Dream11 will also take over the official fantasy game of IPL. Dream11 has IPL to thank for, for increasing its users over the years. The startup has grown from 300,000 users in 2004 to 51 million users today. Just during last year’s IPL, the gaming startup gained over 20 million users, Bhavit Sheth, COO and co-founder of Dream11 told Business Insider. Now, with the official partnership the numbers are only set to grow. “Dream11 is deeply integrating with the IPL, which is set to grow from its 1.4 billion TV impressions and 200 million online viewers in 2018, to achieve our goal of growing from 51 million users to 100 million users in 2019,” said Harsh Jain, CEO and co-founder of Dream11. The startup which is on the brink of becoming India’s first gaming unicorn has been around for 11 years, although it saw its popularity reach the peak with last year’s IPL. The startup also brought on board former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni to be its brand ambassador. According to the 2019 IFSG - KPMG report, fantasy cricket is the most widely played (71% respondents) online fantasy sports game and the primary motivation (72% respondents) for playing fantasy sports is fun and excitement. Gaming startup Dream11 strikes gold as the official partner of IPL

As Dream11 aims to become a one-stop shop for sports fans, its next logical step is merchandising. Dream11 has had a dream run this year, where it turned unicorn in April. Here’s a look at all the startups that have crossed the valuation mark so far in 2019. Rivigo The latest startup to join the unicorn club is logistics startup Rivigo. The logistics sector had long been in the limelight after Delhivery turned unicorn. After this, both Rivigo and Blackbuck raised funds, heating up the race to being a unicorn. Now, Rivigo has managed to be a unicorn after it raised $4.9 million from South Korea's KB Platform Fund. After the deal closed, it is valued at $1.05 billion. Delhivery In March this year, Delhivery became 2019’s first unicorn. This was after the logistics tech startup raised $395 million from SoftBank. After its funding in March, it’s valued at $1.6 billion. The logistics solutions company was founded by Sahil Barua, Mohit Tandon, Suraj Saharan, Kapil Bharti and Bhavesh Manglani. They created a stronghold in the market by partnering with e-commerce majors like Flipkart and Paytm amongst others. Big Basket The grocery retail startup became a unicorn in March 2019. Bigbasket closed its Series F round of funding with an investment of $150 million, which valued it at $2.3 billion. The funding was led by Bigbasket’s earlier investor Alibaba, along with a new investor – Mirae Asset. The grocery sector which is now buzzing with new entrants like Swiggy. Grofers too turned its finances around, and has recently turned a soonicorn after the latest round of funding in May 2019. Ola Electric Ola’s subsidiary Ola Electric also turned a unicorn like its parent company. Its growth has also been fast as most of Ola’s existing investors placed their bets on the company. In July, it became a unicorn after raising $250 million from Softbank. In May, Ola Electric also raised funds from former Vodafone Group CEO Arun Sarin. Some of its other illustrious investors include Chairman Emeritus of Tata Group, Ratan Tata. In March, it had raised ₹4 billion from Ola’s existing and early investors – Tiger Global and Matrix India. Dream 11 India’s first gaming unicorn is Dream11, a fantasy gaming startup. It announced a secondary investment from Steadview Capital, an Asia-focused alternative asset manager in April 2011 which gave brought it its unicorn status. The 11-year old startup had a dream run in 2019, after signing up with IPL and the BCCI as its official partners. The cricket world cup along with IPL helped it clock in stellar numbers. In an interview with Business Insider, one of its founders Bhavin Sheth said that the startup hopes to hit 100 million users by the end of the year. Icertis In July 2019, India and US-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform Icertis became a unicorn. It raised $115 million in funding from Azim Premji’s Premji Invest and US-based VC firm Greycroft. The company, which offers contract management, has 5.7 million contracts across 90 countries. Some of its are Adobe, Airtel, Cognizant, Infosys, and Microsoft. Druva The Indo-US startup Druva entered the unicorn club in June 2019. The cloud data protection startup raised $130 million in a round that was led by Viking Global Investors. It also saw participation from funds like Neuberger Berman and Atreides Management. Existing investors Riverwood Capital, Tenaya Capital, and Nexus Venture Partners too participated in the round. Druva is a SaaS (Software as a Service) startup which was founded by Jaspreet Singh and Milind Borate in 2008. Its patented cloud architecture enables cyber governance, improves cyber resiliency, and helps customers gain critical insights. Citius Tech The healthtech company was a lesser known startup which gained unicorn status. The company provides healthcare solutions, using technologies like business intelligence, mobility and IoT, Big Data, cloud computing, predictive analytics and data science. The company was acquired by Baring Private Equity Asia in July 2019, which gave it a valuation of $1 billion.

As England vs South Africa game kicks off, the World Cup is fuelling Dream11's dream run in 2019

The PIL had claimed that online fantasy league game encourages gambling. This comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court too declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal. The order said that the game requires considerable skill and judgment. This order was further ratified by the Supreme Court. The Indian fantasy gaming industry is projected to be a ₹118.8 billion market by 2023. While cricket holds the majority of the market share, other games are picking up too. Dream11 has had a great run this year – from turning a unicorn with a billion Dollar valuation, in April 2019. Its users also swelled to 67 million after IPL in 2019, and was also the official partners for the league. Now, there is an average of 5 to 6, though Q2 2018 only saw one new unicorn: the gaming communication software company Discord, which was last valued at $1.6 billion. Dream11 becomes India’s first gaming unicorn

The deal is expected to benefit both companies since Byju’s was seeking to also become a ‘content-driven platform’ aimed at a younger audience — kids of three to seven years of age are Osmo’s target market. While Byju’s apps mostly target school kids across grades 4-12 Byju’s eponymous founder Byju Raveendran <a href="https://news.crunchbase.com/news/in-international-push-indian-edtech-company-byju-buys-osmo-for-120m/">told</a> Crunchbase the company currently has over 1,000 people dedicated to video and game development. Other Indian unicorns in the league eyeing global expansion India’s growing unicorns are now aggressively looking to test overseas markets, keen to have a global presence, and many have already seen some success. The homegrown food delivery unicorn, Zomato, expanded internationally in 2012, starting with Dubai. Since then, the company has grown multifold with an array of acquisitions. I'm not the only one who thinks Samsung is phoning it in. <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/4062226/samsung-galaxy-s-4-teaser-trailer-promo-video">The Verge said of the campaign</a>:
"As teasers go, this is frustratingly bad — even by Samsung standards."
Mashable called it "<a href="http://mashable.com/2013/03/04/samsung-teases-galaxy-4-video/">strange</a>."
The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=YzkfC7--jog">YouTube comments boards</a> are filled with quotes such as:
manrock111: who is marketing director of this stupid campaign [?]
Samsung's main ad agency is 72andSunny, one of the hottest shops in the U.S. right now. That company was responsible for the Galaxy S3 launch ads, which poked fun at Apple fanboys waiting in line for their less-advanced phones. It also did that hilarious Samsung Super Bowl ad this year, starring Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen:

And <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-advertising-budget-increases-5x-2013-3">Samsung has a $400 million ad budget</a> — so it can afford to get the brightest talent available.
So Samsung has no excuses. ... unless, of course, that's all part of the plan.
Could it possibly be that Samsung is deliberately pulling its punches in favor of tomorrow's launch ads, which will be the most awesome new product advertising the world has ever seen?
It's the only explanation that makes sense.

Lately, though, tech's unicorns have become rather common. And now, <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/07/06/peak-unicorn-new-vc-firm-doesnt-mince-words/">Fortune's Dan Primack reports</a>, there's even a venture capital firm dedicated to funding unicorn companies.The China-based <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/6411812?trk=prof-exp-company-name">Unicorn Capital Partners</a> has already raised $12 million to fund tech companies in Asia, Primack says.<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/6411812?trk=prof-exp-company-name">According to its LinkedIn page</a>, Unicorn Capital Partners "focuses on investing and partnering with the leading and emerging venture capital fund managers at the start of the Age of the Unicorns."The term "unicorn" was first coined by Cowboy Ventures founder Aileen Lee in a November 2013 <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/02/welcome-to-the-unicorn-club/">TechCrunch post</a>. At the time, Lee identified 39 of these unicorns, which were all US-based software companies founded in 2003 or later, with valuations from public or private market investors of $1 billion or more.Now, about a year and a half later, <a href="http://graphics.wsj.com/billion-dollar-club/">there are 100 unicorns</a>, according to the Wall Street Journal's "Billion-Dollar Club" list.Some Silicon Valley investors have seen the increase in number of tech unicorns, the astronomical rise in startups' valuations, and the amount of funding being raised by Silicon Valley startups as a sign of a looming tech bubble, possibly mirroring the dot-com bubble of the late 90s and early 2000s. Back then, the tech bubble of the late '90s produced a number of flash-in-the-pan internet companies that raised millions - often in public offerings - only to flame out a year or two later.Recently, a handful of investors - including Benchmark's Bill Gurley and Y Combinator's Sam Altman - have voiced their concerns about the current state of venture capital funding. In a tweetstorm in February, Altman warned startups that they need to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-burn-rate-tweetstorm-2015-2">keep their burn rates low</a>. High startup burn rates are one measure investors have used to determine whether or not tech-bubble talk is real. At a SXSW keynote this year, Gurley warned that "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gurley-sxsw-talk-on-dead-unicorns-2015-3">a complete absence of fear</a>" in Silicon Valley had led venture-capital firms to take big risks on tech companies. Those companies could face a turn in the market in the near future. Five years later, we seem to be numb to the billion-dollar acquisitions and valuations around us. WhatsApp was acquired for $19 billion. Uber is valued at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toyota-to-invest-500m-in-uber-at-72b-valuation-report-2018-8">$72 billion</a>. Yet, to build a billion-dollar company from scratch is still an incredibly difficult feat. Last year, <a href="https://www.cbinsights.com/research/venture-capital-funnel-2/">CB Insights</a> reported that the odds of becoming a unicorn - a company valued at $1 billion or more - was less than 1% for companies that had raised venture capital. So far in 2018, there have been 35 tech companies in the US to reach this unicorn status, according to <a href="https://pitchbook.com/news/articles/unicorn-class-of-2018">data provided by PitchBook</a>. Others were included in PitchBook's list, like the makeup company Pat McGrath Labs, the fancy healthcare provider One Medical, and the publicly traded weed dispensary company MedMen. There were also international companies.
