East Delhi witnesses a stiff fight in 2019 Lok Sabha elections as the BJP has fielded Gautham Gambhir, the famous cricketer against AAP’s Atishi and Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely. Gautam Gambhir, the cricketer turned as a politician is trying his luck in East Delhi, which is the least developed region of the capital of India. At present, the sitting MP from this constituency is Maheish Girri of the BJP. Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP only recently in March 2019. He has been used by the BJP as a star campaigner and to speak for the party on News channels. Gautham Gambhir is new to politics and this is his first election.  Uthappa (46), Gambhir (60), Manvinder Bisla (6), <keyword id="18938" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Yusuf-Pathan">Yusuf Pathan</keyword> (11) , Ryan ten Doeschate (12) and Andre Russell (1) departed in quick succession to light up the Pakistani faces but the wickets came too late in the day as Suryakumar Yadav (14*) kept his cool to see the team home with three balls to go. 
 
The team from across the border had a cloddish outing. First they were at least 20 short of what they should have scored and then a poor performance in the field made matters worse. A golden opportunity had presented itself for Lions in the sixth over when Aizaz Cheema, with a short-pitched delivery, had Uthappa lob an easy catch but Asif Raza dropped it running to his left from short fine-leg. Saad Nasim and Nasir Jamshed also brought their butter fingers into view. Had these opportunities were taken, the result could have been different. 
 
However, the man who actually made the difference for KKR was Narine whose second spell that saw him take back-to-back wickets restricted Lions to a modest total. Left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav also impressed on debut foxing the opposition batsmen throughout his spell (4-0-21-1). 
 
Lions got off to a good start, thanks largely to <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ahmed-shehzad/7001/7070">Ahmed Shehzad </a>who added 50 runs with Jamshed for the opening wicket. Shehzad was benefited by poor wicketkeeping from Bisla who missed two easy stumping chances when the batsman was on 19 and 32 respectively. Narine also dropped Shehzad on 37 at short fine leg off the bowling of left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. Shehzad went on to score 59. 
 
The opening stand was broken by a brilliant throw from Russell who ran in from deep midwicket to throw the stumps down at the non-striker's end to send back Jamshed for 10. Captain Mohammad Hafeez and Shehzad departed in quick succession leaving the Pakistanis at 91 for 3 and Gambhir brought back Narine who put the batsmen under a spell straight away. He sent back Nasim (0) first and then in his next over accounted for Umar Siddiq (2) and Raza (1). 
 
Things could have been disastrous for Hafeez's men if it weren't for <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/umar-akmal/7001/7074">Umar Akmal</a> who got some big shots towards the end, making 40 off 24 balls that included two fours and six off Piyush Chawla in an over. Akmal got out off the last ball of the innings. 
 KKR, who won their first match against Chennai Super Kings, made two changes to their team, bringing in Uthappa in place of <keyword id="66306" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Manish-Pandey">Manish Pandey</keyword> and Kuldeep for Umesh Yadav. Needing 16 off the last 12 balls, one got a feeling they had the match in their pocket, but <keyword id="640879" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="James-Faulkner">James Faulkner</keyword>'s heroics with the ball, followed by a thrilling Super Over denied <keyword id="13839" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir">Gautam Gambhir</keyword>'s men the much needed victory. 
 The result might have not been the ideal way for KKR to sign off the UAE leg, but <keyword id="6371482" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="coach">coach</keyword> Trevor Bayliss says the team did well to come close to the target, but not before admitting to his team's inconsistent show with the bat. 
 
"We've just been a little bit off in our game. We played really well in our first match but I don't think we have performed anywhere near our potential yet. We've seen flashes of it tonight but that's the highs and lows of a T20 game," Bayliss said in the post-match conference. 
 
The match was evenly poised at 88/4 when Surya Kumar Yadav and allrounder Shakib Al Hasan revived the KKR innings and took the score to 137. Yadav's 19-ball 31 almost got his side home and Bayliss was quick to laud the effort of the 23-year-old-batsman. 
 
"I think he did a fantastic job. I believe he is one of the better finishers I've seen. He might not look like the big-hitting player but anyone who can sweep a medium-pacer over a big boundary at square leg, to me that person is a power hitter. He has done extremely well for us in the three or four games he has batted," Bayliss said. 
 
However, Bayliss did confess that KKR's batting has not lived upto its potential and the batsmen need to get among the runs before it gets late. "We're looking forward to all our batsmen scoring runs. That's what everyone is striving for. It was good to see the captain [Gambhir] score some runs tonight, which will hopefully be the beginning of a good run for him." 
 
Dismissing the thoughts of perhaps not having a big-hitter in the Super over cost them the match, the former Sri Lanka coach said his team possesses a few genuine match-winners. 
 
"I'm not necessarily concerned about having a big hitter in the team. I think we have got some good finishers. As I said earlier, Yadav did an outstanding job for us. Any constituency that’s not going to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is being credited to Congress. Since 1998, the political party that won the general election in Delhi has gone on to form the government. Bringing contestants like the former Bhojpuri actor, Manoj Tiwari, in North East Delhi, singer, Hans Raj Hans, in North West Delhi and former cricketer, Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi may have worked in the BJP’s favour with different exit polls predicting that the national party is set to take home at least five seats from Delhi. BJP relied on star power during the polls, Congress stuck to legacy politics and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s platform was based on their municipal successes. During the 2014 election, BJP’s victory was unanimous with the political party winning over all seven seats. Now, the party is taking the exit polls an indication of their majority, has already planning for the Delhi’s assembly elections scheduled to take place in 2020 with reports of Tiwari taking meeting with official from municipal boards in the city. Before the polls, traders in the city already opined that while AAP was good for the city, they would still like to see a national party in power to represent the Delhi’s interests in Parliament. Past electoral experiences show that the city’s voting pattern differs greatly when it comes to the national elections versus state elections.

It's just getting worse and worse for India. After the ignominy of Southampton, they have yet again succumbed to a crushing defeat against England at Manchester. They now trail England 1-2 in the five-match series. Gocricket.com takes a look at how each member of the Indian team fared at Old Trafford.

At Manchester he scored a total of 18 runs including a duck in the first innings. He was at the receiving end of a peach of a delivery from James Anderson in the first innings and in the second, fell to Chris Woakes. His slump has come at a wrong time. Among all the specialist Indian batsmen on the tour, he has been one of the two brightest spots. With the other openers failing, he needs to get his touch back if India hope to do well in the fourth Test. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/gautam-gambhir/4001/4043">Gautam Gambhir </a> Questions were raised when Gambhir was selected for the England tour as a reserve opener. Those questions were put to rest when the first choice opener in <keyword id="17805" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shikhar-Dhawan">Shikhar Dhawan</keyword> failed. The reasons, for which he lost his place in the national side, seem to be valid even today. A batsman of his repute, on his return to international cricket after almost two years, should perform but he could muster only 22 runs in two innings. Both the times he fell to short deliveries. In the first innings, his dismissal brought back memories of the 2011 tour of England when he repeatedly was caught in the slip cordon and his second dismissal left everyone frustrated as he needlessly gloved one from Anderson to be caught by the wicketkeeper.

In the second innings, he was a bit unlucky to be given out lbw as replays showed the ball from Moeen Ali was missing the leg stump. He managed 17. His technique on seaming, pacy tracks is under intense scrutiny after yet another failure.

Seems Kohli is not willing to learn and improve. People have lost count of the number of times his weakness against outside off deliveries has been exploited England bowlers. He is the designated superstar of a star-studded Indian line-up. But where is that performance? In both the innings, Anderson got the better of him. He scored a duck in the first and managed seven in the second before pushing at a delivery that went safely into the hands of Ian Bell at second slip. Someone needs to tell him that he need not go after every delivery, especially those outside off. Let better sense prevail.

Smile is infectious. Replace 'smile' with 'failure' for Rahane. When everyone around him seems to be hell bent on playing loose, rash strokes, could he have avoided playing one of his own? Yes. But he couldn't. In the first innings with his team in dire straits, he gifted Chris Jordan his wicket after scoring 24 in a partnership with captain Dhoni that gave a flickering hope of a recovery. In the second, another loose shot put him on the way back to the dressing room after he had managed a single. All we can hope is that his failure at Manchester is just a one-off incident.

Dhoni's knock of 71 runs in the first innings will be counted among his best in Tests. When everything around him crumbled, he was the lone warrior before he pulled one that ended his fight. In the second, he again saved India from the ignominy of being bowled out for double figures. However, his wicketkeeping and captaincy was questionable. Not utilising bowlers effectively apart from his performance behind the stumps is not helping the team. After the low of Southampton, it was expected that he would rejig things. But, under his watch, India slipped further into the abyss. Lord's is a distant memory now for him and the Indian fans. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravindra-jadeja/4001/32004">Ravindra Jadeja</a> 
Anderson has gained much out of his spat with India allrounder Jadeja. The Englishman has flourished. On the other hand, Jadeja's only significant contribution was trapping Anderson after being meted out a similar treatment by the pacer in India's first innings. He took one wicket in the entire match and scored four runs including a 14-ball duck in the first innings. His pairing with R Ashwin on Indian tracks is deadly. In England where Moeen Ali has trapped India in a web of spin, he has been nothing short of ordinary. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/bhuvneshwar-kumar/4001/25023">Bhuvneshwar Kumar</a> 
Bhuvneshwar continues to toil hard and he is reaping rewards for his efforts. He seems to be the only member of the Indian team who is aware of his limitations and is taking the most out of his abilities. He took three wickets at Manchester where England batted once. Two of those (Sam Robson and Bell) were a result of some wonderful bowling. He has lost his 'midas touch' with the bat as scores of 0 and 10 would suggest. But he cannot be expected to hide the failures of the batsmen every single time. His job is to bowl, not score runs. Unfortunately he has been forced to do the additional job as well and the effect is the dip in his intensity. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/varun-aaron/4001/30019">Varun Aaron</a> 
Back in the team after a gap of almost three years, Aaron impressed with his lively pace. He bowled consistently above 140 km/hr and occasionally troubled the batsmen with his bounce. The delivery with which he cleaned up Moeen Ali was one of the few moments to cherish for India from the Test. He picked 3/97 in 26 overs and made an impressive return, although straying away on occasions. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin/4001/26007">R Ashwin</a> 
Include Ashwin and things will get better was the mantra after the loss at Southampton for India. He was selected and bowled well but went wicketless even as his counterpart (Moeen) ended with four scalps. However, it was his batting that was much talked about. He put to shame the Indian top order in both the innings. In the first his 40 runs took the team past 150 runs and he followed it with an unbeaten 46 which was the highest score by any Indian batsman in the second dig. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/pankaj-singh/4001/4100">Pankaj Singh</a> 
His painful wait for a wicket finally ended on the third day when he removed Joe Root for 77. He, again, started well but his workhorse attitude didn't translate into anything significant. On a pitch where England bowlers murdered Indian batting, his efforts at best can be summed up as below par. He bowls well but not good enough that will force the selectors to give him an extended run. Mind you – he is bowling in helpful conditions and not on lifeless subcontinent tracks. If <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ishant-sharma/4001/4094">Ishant Sharma</a> gets fit, Pankaj, who took two wickets in the Test, will surely sit out at The Oval.

A Report Card Of India's Defeat At Manchester

You can help me make a decision since I am caught between two emotions. Should I laugh or cry? 
 Before you ask me why, let me tell you that a couple of questions have been dominating the mind from the time the <keyword id="81008" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Board-of-Control-for-Cricket-in-India">Board of Control for Cricket in India</keyword> (<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword>) made changes to the <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/teams/india/4001/home">Indian team's </a>coaching staff and sparked the laugh-or-cry debate in my mind. 
 
In the first place, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/news/England-vs-India-2014-Ravi-Shastri-to-be-in-charge-of-Indian-team-for-England-ODIs/articleshow/40390445.cms">installing </a>former India allrounder <keyword id="19692" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shastri">Ravi Shastri</keyword> as Director of the Indian team and sidelining the bowling and fielding coaches, Joe Dawes and Trevor Penny respectively, ahead of the limited-over series against England is an attempt to pull wool over our eyes rather than balm to hearts and souls wounded by dismal showing in three successive Tests. 
 
It is no secret that the Indian limited-overs team is more competitive than the Test team has been for a while now, especially in overseas series. Surely, no one needs reminding that <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">Mahendra Singh Dhoni's</a> team has won six and lost 14 of 28 overseas Tests. Even more surely, it is the Test side that is in greater need of guidance than the squad that plays white-ball cricket. 
 Since batsmen M Vijay, <keyword id="13839" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir">Gautam Gambhir</keyword> and <keyword id="75027" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cheteshwar-Pujara">Cheteshwar Pujara</keyword>, pace bowlers <keyword id="11685" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ishant-Sharma">Ishant Sharma</keyword>, Pankaj Singh and <keyword id="6370607" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Varun-Aaron">Varun Aaron</keyword> as well as reserve wicketkeepers Wriddhiman Saha and Naman Ojha have returned home ahead of the ODIs, and a fresh crew has flown in, it will be unfair to compare the work of the coaches who have been given a break with that of the new staff. 
 
Besides this <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/news/India-vs-England-ODI-series-My-job-is-to-find-out-what-went-wrong-and-file-a-report-says-Ravi-Shastri/articleshow/40492231.cms">clumsy attempt</a> to pull wool over the eyes of fans of Test cricket, the appointment of <keyword id="945851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League-Governing-Council">Indian Premier League Governing Council</keyword> member Shastri as Director of the Indian team and let him pick coaching staff for the ODI team in England comes across as a classic case of not looking beyond the BCCI's favourite child, <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> and an erstwhile favourite, the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Assistant coach Sanjay Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar both earned their place in the spotlight thanks to the run of <keyword id="13883" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kings-XI-Punjab">Kings XI Punjab</keyword> in IPL 2014 while B Arun, ostensibly the bowling coach now, has been with the NCA for many years now. Of course, Sridhar has also been in the NCA and, like Arun, worked with junior India teams. 
 
If critics of the IPL have blamed the inadequate technique of the Indian batsmen against the swinging and seaming cricket ball on IPL, its proponents have cited improved fielding - not slip catching, for sure - standards as a result of the IPL. It does look like everyone, critic and defendant alike, have come to regard the IPL as the be all and end all of Indian cricket. 
 
Shastri's interview with ESPNcricinfo's Nagraj Gollapudi – "I had no reservations about the job. I insisted on the coaching staff I wanted. I went (for domestic Indian coaches) because I felt they can contribute," he said – is a confirmation that the BCCI and its contracted commentators do not pay attention to first-class cricket in the country. 
 Karnataka coach J <keyword id="26593" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Kumar">Arun Kumar</keyword> would surely have done something right for the team to win not only the Ranji Trophy after 15 years but also the Irani Cup and Vijay Hazare Trophy titles in 2013-14, a rare hat-trick of titles in a season. Does his missing out on being with an IPL team have anything to do with his not landing an assignment with any Indian team? 
 
The IPL can run on its own steam and does not need any molly-coddling from the BCCI, except to ensure that it is run in a transparent manner and stays clean. These attempts to prop up the IPL as only a harbinger of good cricket because it lets domestic players rub shoulders with international stars are little more than dramatic. 
 
Perhaps the real solution lies in ensuring that the Test players do not show up in domestic cricket only sporadically. As a Ranji Trophy star pointed out, those who are making so much noise about the quality of pitches in domestic cricket have not been looking at the tracks in Ranji Trophy where seam and swing bowlers pose severe challenges to batsmen. Is there no cricket beyond the IPL? Are there no coaches beyond NCA?

BCCI Forgets That There Is More To Indian Cricket Than Just IPL

England's continuation of winning every session stretched into the fourth day with India struggling to save the third Test at the Ageas Bowl. For India, though, there was scant change in fortunes from day three: like in the first innings, India went into stumps in a precarious situation, well set batsmen failed to push on and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/moeen-ali/3001/3153">Moeen Ali</a> had two wickets. India needed to bat out 90 overs with the 445-run target seemingly out of reach after closing the day on 112 for 4, 333 behind. 
 
While India's frontline bowlers struggled to contain the England batsmen in the second innings, it only needed England's part-timers to inflict most damage. Three out of India's top four were victims of Moeen and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/joe-root/3001/73004">Joe Root</a>, while the fourth was run out. Lapses of concentration were India's biggest bane in a game their batsmen needed large reserves of. <keyword id="51784" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ajinkya-Rahane">Ajinkya Rahane</keyword> (18*) and Rohit Sharma (6*) played out the rest of the day but another 90 overs remain. 
 Like the last three days, England continued to dominate while India continued to play catch up. Twenty-five balls was all it took for England's bowlers to wrap up India's innings for 330, and despite the visitors falling short of the follow-on target by 39 runs, <keyword id="9234" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Alastair-Cook">Alastair Cook</keyword> led his team out to bat for a second time, 239 ahead. 
 A rapid second essay, powered by <keyword id="1411" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="captain">captain</keyword> Cook's 70* and Joe Root's 41-ball 56 prompted England's second declaration of the match on 205 for 4, setting India a target of 445. England scored at over five runs an over, giving themselves little over four sessions to bowl India out defending a total that has never been chased before. 
 
In reply, India looked rather settled as Murali Vijay and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/shikhar-dhawan/4001/28004">Shikhar Dhawan</a> began well. India's openers haven't put on 50 in an away Test since <keyword id="13839" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir">Gautam Gambhir</keyword> and Abhinav Mukund three years ago, and the trend continued as Vijay ran himself out. Dhawan set off for a quick single and Stuart Broad's underarm throw hit the stumps directly to find Vijay inches short for 12. 
 Cheteshwar Pujara hadn't converted any of his previous starts, and the introduction of Moeen into the attack didn't allow him one this time, his loose drive taking an edge which Chris Jordan brilliantly hung on to at first slip. Another 50-run partnership followed, this time between Dhawan and <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword>, but the curse of the part-time spinner continued to lurk and both fell to similar dismissals. Dhawan was drawn into a drive on 37 that found the outside edge of his bat, while Kohli nicked behind to Jos Buttler for 28. 
 England needed quick runs on the board after choosing not to enforce the follow-on, but Sam Robson was out early to <keyword id="479464" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bhuvneshwar-Kumar">Bhuvneshwar Kumar</keyword> for 13 as Dhawan held on to a catch at first slip, but Dhoni's decision to bring on the part-time spinners indicated resignation as the hosts ran away with the advantage. 
 Gary Ballance was unfortunate as the umpire adjudged him caught at short leg to <keyword id="6359948" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ravindra-Jadeja">Ravindra Jadeja</keyword> for 38, even though replays suggested otherwise. England resisted the temptation to promote Jos Buttler up the order to boost the scoring rate, but Ian Bell (23, 21b, 4x4) and Root ensured they kept the momentum during the second session. Bell was bowled round his stumps as Jadeja got one to turn in from the rough and Root suffered the same fate, but his sixth Test half-century had meant England had opened up a 444-run lead, enough to sound the declaration. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/james-anderson/3001/3040">James Anderson's</a> short ball ploy had earlier resulted in the wickets of overnight batsmen MS Dhoni and Mohammed Shami as he finished with 5 for 53 on his 32nd birthday, his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket and third against India as they made short work of India's first innings. While Dhoni was out fending an Anderson short ball without adding to his overnight 50, Mohammed Shami's dismissal was a mirror image of Cheteshwar Pujara's wicket on the third day, and India could only add seven more runs to their total. 
 
India's bowlers came out hoping they didn't let England get away with too many, they found little help from either the surface or the bowlers. After Robson's wicket, Bhuvneshwar was caned for 59 from his 10 overs while Shami bowled just four, sounding alarms over his place in the fourth Test.

England Sense Win As India Falter Against Spin

It is a wonderful game, cricket. It grabs our emotions and takes them on a roller-coaster ride all the time, unaware of how much control it exercises over our conscience and the subconscience. It offers fans many triggers; some events sparking a hypothetical debate, others making them drown themselves in nostalgia. 
 <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> hero <keyword id="84726" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Steve-Smith">Steve Smith</keyword>'s street-smart decision to pat a delivery from Kolkata Knight Riders's mystery bowler Sunil Narine into covers - left invitingly vacant by Gautam Gambhir perhaps under the mistaken notion that RR needed to get three runs - and complete two runs comfortably has been one such trigger this week. 
 Having written that Smith's intelligent play would have done Javed Miandad proud, I asked myself which Indian batsman would have acted with the sensibility that Smith showed off the final ball of a Super Over in a high-intensity game. One name sprang to mind: <keyword id="4166" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ajay-Jadeja">Ajay Jadeja</keyword>. 
 
Nearly everyone else would have risked a guts-and-glory shot under the circumstances. In the mind's eye, one can see some of those who would have tried the big shot coming out with guns blazing and their reputations enhanced; but one can also see most coming up second best to the pressure of the occasion and the bowler. 
 
So what is it about Jadeja that makes me believe that he would have done exactly what Smith did in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night? His deep knowledge of the laws of cricket, his ability to harness his own performance to secure the best results and a willingness to reach the goals with the minimum fuss make him the prime candidate. 
 
There are two instances of his craft that stand out - and these come a year on either side of his assault on Waqar Younis' bowling in the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal at Bangalore. In a North Zone Ranji Trophy limited-overs game against Services in 1995, he manipulated (rather than farmed) strike when with tailender Sonu Sharma. 
 
Haryana were in a poor way and it was imperative that Jadeja retain as much of the strike as possible. Services set the field in such a way that they would concede him a single to try and have a go at Sonu Sharma. But Jadeja, acknowledged as one of the sharpest brains in Indian cricket, was up to speed with that ploy. 
 
He came up a counter plan that not only helped his team but also forced BCCI to change the playing conditions. Jadeja and Sonu Sharma would cross but the man running to the danger end would turn from halfway down the pitch. They would get one run - with an umpire signalling one short - but Jadeja retained strike. 
 
Then, in a Ranji Trophy game against Services in Faridabad in 1997, Jadeja shared a last-wicket partnership of 72 with Vineet Jain. It must have taken some skill since Jadeja finished with 242 not out while Jain's contribution to the stand was a grand total of zero runs! 
 
Memories of these matches were strong enough reason to merit a call to the man himself. Jadeja came up with the names of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Mohammad Kaif and Rahul Dravid as Indian batsmen who would have shown a similar acute awareness of the immediate task on hand and the possibilities opened up by the field placing to do just enough to get to the goal as Steve Smith did. 
 "MS has done it in an <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> game," Jadeja said, setting me off on a search for an instance of Dhoni finishing a game with a simple single or a tantalizing two. It is easier to recall instances of Dhoni finishing games with a flourish, the ICC <keyword id="3859" type="SPORT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Cricket-World-Cup">Cricket World Cup</keyword> 2011 final against <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> being on top of that list. 
 
Last year, Dhoni took on Sunrisers Hyderabad's Ashish Reddy and came up with a finishing sequence of dot, six, four and four to win a home game for Chennai Super Kings with two deliveries to spare. Jadeja was right, though. Ravichandran <keyword id="20035994" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashwin" source="keywords">Ashwin</keyword> doesn't like "latching on to people" and that's one reason why he has never warmed up to the idea of banking on <keyword id="20134692" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coaches" source="keywords">coaches</keyword> in the traditional sense as he believes that such <keyword id="20902120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dependence" source="keywords">dependence</keyword> makes players dogmatic. In his 14-year international <keyword id="19919646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cricket" source="keywords">cricket</keyword> career, spanning 281 games and 744 wickets across formats, Ashwin's sense of agency and his ability to time and again rediscover himself, have helped him survive the grind. "A lot of players are heavily dependent on coaches or mentors, or one person which I think is a very dangerous trend because latching on to people and over-dependency can cause you to not be able to open to new ideas," the 37-year-old off-spinner told PTI in a telephonic interview recently. It is not that Ashwin never had a sounding board. His first state team coach WV Raman, one of the respected names in Indian cricket, and Tamil Nadu legend and former India batter S Badrinath, have been guiding forces for him. But his equation with them never turned into the kind of dependence that would take away his own ability to search for solutions. "See very often the challenge of a coach is to be able to offer you several solutions. This is because what works for one (particular player) might not work for the other," he explained. "One modern-day coaching philosophy which I totally disagree with is the fact that they try to copy-paste the same technique (solution) that's worked for another cricketer," Ashwin, who recently made his debut as an author with 'I Have The Streets: A Kutti Cricket Story', added. While he is completely aware that some players get results by surrendering to the vision of their coaches, he also feels that such dependence can lead to a closed mind. "Because as a cricketer, you constantly are thrown up with new challenges, so you must be able to find your own answers," the tweaker, who is behind only the legendary Anil Kumble in the list of India's highest Test wicket-takers, pointed out. To Ashwin, Raman has been that catalyst, who helped him focus his intuitive mind. "People can give you a helping hand. But they cannot guide you through in your career, you will have to be open to fresh ideas. "For me, WV allowed me the freedom to express, and, you know, try new things. He also taught me how and on what path I need to travel, but he never said, 'This is the path you need to travel upon'. "So in a way, in my early days, guidance from WV ensured that I was never really over-reliant on anybody." Ashwin said getting a second opinion is never a bad idea but cricket primarily is a self-taught sport. "If you don't have awareness of your own game and if you can't teach yourself, I think you are always going to be dependent on someone which I think is a very dangerous part. "I am not saying people with coaches or people who are dependent don't do well in life but there is a chance of selling yourself short," he asserted. He is gearing up for a big 10-Test season and the Bangladesh series next month will be his first under new head coach <keyword id="19914485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir" source="keywords">Gautam Gambhir</keyword>, someone with whom he has also played a lot. Ashwin also admires him as one of the "heroes" of Indian cricket. "Gautam is someone I still share a very, very good relationship with. Because of the fact that he is a very straightforward and an honest guy. "I think Gautam is also one of those guys that we should always be backing. He's a hero of Indian cricket," he said of the new coach, who took charge in the recent tour of Sri Lanka. It took me 2-3 years to perfect 'Carrom Ball' ============================= The best in the world have struggled to read his signature 'carrom ball' but Ashwin, who first saw Ajantha Mendis bowl it during an age-group camp in Chennai, said that it took him nearly three years before he was satisfied with its execution. For the uninitiated, a carrom ball is a delivery which turns the other way and is released with a flick of the middle finger. In case of a right hander, it will turn away from the bat. "I started bowling those balls in the nets 2006 or 2007 onwards, which was probably the second season for me in first-class cricket. "It took me a good two years before I implemented it in the south zone leg matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (KS Subbaiah Pillai Trophy) in 2008. By 2010, I was probably pretty confident about the pace at which I bowled. "So, it took about two to three years for me to gain confidence." Priority should always be playing for India ============================ The IPL has changed the lives of young Indian cricketers and has been "tremendous" for country's cricketing ecosystem but Ashwin believes that for an aspiring cricketer, the ultimate goal should forever be playing for the country. "I am very glad that a lot of young kids are coming now and making a good amount of money. It is changing their livelihood, changing the status of their families. It's unbelievable for India, for the Indian cricketing ecosystem," he said. "But I still feel there must be some incentive and some motivation for all these kids to want to play for India, and that's absolutely in the hands of the stakeholders and the decision makers."
