These young engineers, who have been waiting for nearly two years, now have a confirmed joining date of October 7, 2024. According to NLB Services, a talent solutions company, the <keyword id="6374576" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="it-industry" source="Orion">IT industry</keyword> has seen a dip in the <keyword id="6441485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="freshers-hiring" source="Orion">freshers hiring</keyword> intent from 49% in H1 2023 to 42% in H1 2024. What should you do? Uncertain economic conditions come in cycles and if you are a fresher it is just a coincidence that you trying to find your first job in the middle of one. Nothing to do with how good your skills are. But, to navigate such challenging times better, there are things you can do that increase your chances of getting hired. Acquire relevant skills through certifications In the 21st century, having a degree may not be enough. You need skills that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and proof that you have them. In addition to your regular degree, acquire one or two skills preferably through certification. There are many industry-certified courses available both online and offline. Before you enrol on any such courses, talk to your seniors or those already in a job to find out which are the skills in demand. It is essential to stay proactive and not give up. “Developing a combination of technical competencies and soft skills is crucial, alongside participation in hackathons and collaborative projects to showcase practical abilities,” says Vij. Update your profile and network Getting a job off-campus is a time-consuming process. It involves a lot of preparation and results may not be immediate. The first step is to let potential employers know that you are available for hire. “Continually update your profiles on job boards and expand your network on platforms such as LinkedIn, particularly with regards to target companies. Increase engagement and enhance visibility within the talent acquisition community,” says Kesavan. Seek out a mentor In difficult situations, sound advice always comes in handy. “Connecting with industry peers, experts and mentors can make a huge impact on one’s professional journey,” says Sachin Alug, CEO, NLB Services. Freshers must find appropriate networks that play a vital role in their learning, scope of opportunities and creating a sustainable career. From your college professor to your neighbour to your senior, you may find a good mentor if you continuously seek genuine help. Take up a part-time job If you are not getting a job consider taking up part-time gigs which are related to your field of work. Working part-time to utilise one’s time in a productive way can be a good idea for many candidates. “This not only empowers them financially but also allows them time to prepare for their full-time professions. While aspirants may choose part-time <keyword id="11018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jobs" source="Orion">jobs</keyword> as a temporary occupation, the focus must not shift from enhancing one’s skills in the direction they want to excel in,” says Alug. For context, Wipro in February slashed the annual compensation for freshers who had already undergone the company’s ‘Velocity’ training programme to ₹3.5 lakh from ₹6.5 lakh per annum. At the time, Wipro blamed the “changing macro environment” and “business needs”. Business Insider India has obtained a copy of the document detailing Wipro’s Project Readiness Programme, which details the contours of the programme. “Project Readiness Programme is a programme offered by Talent Transformation to all campus and off-campus hires referred as NGAs (next-generation associates). The broad objective of PRP is to equip NGA with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to start working on customer projects,” the PRP document says. This has attracted the ire of Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), a Pune-based union. “Wipro's actions towards its fresher employees are unethical, unfair and unjust. The training programme duration ranges from anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks, with the training done either via e-learning or an instructor. In particular, demand for blue collar security jobs grew three-fold in the past one year, exhibiting a 219% year-on-year growth in March 2023, says a report by Quess Corp. “The significant increase in demand for security services in the blue-collar workforce highlights the crucial need for maintaining a safe and secure workplace. Employers are now looking for security guards who are friendly, approachable, and skilled in conflict resolution to ensure the well-being of their employees,” said the report by Qjobs, a subsidiary of Quess Corp, a digital job platform for blue-collar job seekers. The other blue collar job vacancies that grew by a healthy 61.7% YoY are administrative and human resource positions, across industries. “Despite the changing economic climate, there is an increasing demand for blue-collar workers, especially in the HR/admin and security service job roles. This trend is expected to continue in the coming years, with more companies realizing the importance of investing in talent management and securing the workspace to improve their overall business performance,” said Amit Nigam, CEO, Billion Careers. The overall job vacancies for the blue-collar workforce in India also exhibited a positive trend growing 7% increase in the same period. Apart from government initiatives, rapid urbanization, infrastructure development, a growing middle class, and the rise of e-commerce is boosting growth in blue collar jobs. “Furthermore, India's investments in infrastructure development, including the construction of highways, airports, and ports, are expected to generate a plethora of blue-collar job opportunities in the transportation, logistics, and construction sectors,” said Nigam. Freshers constitute a major portion of new hires From March 2022 to March 2023, approximately 82.8% of blue-collar hires had 0-3 years of work experience, while those with seven or more years of experience represented only 0.15% of hires. “Additionally, some employers view freshers as a long-term investment in their future workforce, recognizing the benefits of having tech-savvy individuals in an increasingly automated world,” the report said. Similarly, skilled workers with people skills are being preferred for job roles such as event supervisors and on-ground security staff. There has also been a notable growth of 33% YoY in the counter sales and retail job category as well. This growth is likely attributed to the increased demand for goods and services, as well as the overall economic growth. In addition, the field sales job category experienced a significant YoY increase of 24.7%, and the business development job category also saw a rise of YoY growth of 20.6%. Women constitute only about 16% of the blue-collar workforce Despite the efforts made towards achieving gender equality, men still dominate the blue-collar industry in India, comprising a significant 84.26% of the workforce as of March 2023, the data reveals. Conversely, women only constitute 15.74% of the workforce due to several factors, such as unequal opportunities for skill development and career advancement. It is crucial for the government and companies to take steps to encourage women's participation in non-traditional jobs, ensure equitable pay for their work, and implement policies to guarantee a secure and welcoming work environment for them, the report said.

Infosys is allegedly letting go of hundreds of employees, who are at the fag end of their training and failed the internal assessment tests. The new recruits will have to undergo comprehensive training before they are added into various teams for full-fledged work. Senior employees in the IT Company stated on condition of anonymity that though there is economic slowdown and recession, the companies are focusing more on quality and productivity. Therefore, average talent is not preferred under the circumstances. "The corona pandemic in the last two years has affected the education, quality of students and their skillsets. There is a clear lack regarding teaching and the honing of skills. Many graduates, who passed out in the last two years, are not in a position to prove themselves and there is extreme pressure on the trainees," they explain. Sources explained that the freshers are provided with two chances to clear their assessment. If they fail, they will not be onboarded. However, the freshers who have been sacked from Infosys maintained that members of the teams which did not get projects are being asked to go and those with projects are not touched. Tech industry insiders are of the opinion that the phase is going to last for a while and pressure on industry will be there till 2024. The freshers won't enjoy the halcyon days, when the job market was hot during the pandemic. "It is evident that the global economic crisis is real as we can see big companies such as <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> and Amazon laying off people. It is going to last for a while. So, I believe that the crisis will remain in the entire 2023 and even probably the first quarter of 2024. It will eventually subside and we all will come back to normalcy. However, it is going to take some time," stated Sumanth Prabhu, Co-Founder and CEO, Ulipsu. "My suggestion for people looking for jobs or the ones who are employed is that getting a job now is precious or they should hold onto the job that they currently have. It's a good thing that the employees are getting retained and valued. If they are valued, they should work hard to ensure that the value is reciprocated," he said. "Also, it is the right time for businesses to cut down costs and be frugal. The global economic crisis is something that teaches all companies that we should not hire unnecessarily and should not commit to costs that are unnecessary or irrelevant. Companies have to lay off during these kinds of crises. So, it is better to hire wisely than to hire illogically and fire people," Sumanth Prabhu explained. IT giant Wipro has laid off more than 400 fresher employees for poor performance in internal assessment tests in January. The company had issued termination letters to all the employees and stated that despite the adequate training, the candidates have failed to perform. The termination letter maintained that the employees are liable to pay Rs 75,000 of training cost which company has spent on them. But, the amount is being waived off. Commenting on the development, Wipro had clarified that, Wipro takes pride in holding itself to the highest standards. As per the standards the aim is set of all. From every entry level employee it is expected to have a certain level of proficiency in their designated area of work. If pipeline projects are getting affected for various reasons, the companies will strategise their moves by holding new recruitments or withdrawing offers. "This trend is an old one and the situation is projected like it is the end of IT industry which is wrong. The focus is on adopting to new technology, which is being focussed by all major tech companies. They are doing best prepare work force for new challenges," an expert said.
