Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

India Inc. stares at an earnings dearth in Q2, FMCG, auto, and consumer durables falter

New Delhi: <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">Foreign investors</keyword> pulled out a massive Rs 94,000 crore (around USD 11.2 billion) from the Indian <keyword id="19925636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="keywords">stock market</keyword> in October, making it the worst-ever month in terms of outflows, triggered by the elevated valuation of domestic equities and attractive valuations of <keyword id="20295104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-stocks" source="keywords">Chinese stocks</keyword>. Before this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. The latest outflow came after a nine-month high investment of Rs 57,724 crore in September 2024. Since June, FPIs have consistently bought equities after withdrawing Rs 34,252 crore in April-May. Overall, FPIs have been net buyers in 2024, except for January, April and May, data with the depositories showed. Looking ahead, the trajectory of global events like geopolitical developments, interest rate movements, progress in the Chinese economy and the outcome of the US Presidential election will play a crucial role in shaping future foreign investment in <keyword id="20014814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equities" source="keywords">Indian equities</keyword>, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. On the domestic front, key indicators like inflation trajectory, corporate earnings, and the impact of festive season demand will also be closely watched by FPIs as they assess opportunities in the Indian market, he added. According to the data, FPIs recorded a net outflow of Rs 94,017 crore in October. The intensity of net outflows could be gauged from the fact that except for one day, FPIs were net sellers throughout the month, bringing their total investment for 2024 down to Rs 6,593 crore. This relentless selling resulted in about an 8 per cent decline in benchmark indices from their peaks. Several factors contributed towards this massive withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian equity markets in October. The major among them is the elevated valuations of Indian equities. This has triggered a shift in investments towards China, where valuations are currently more attractive. Additionally, a series of stimulus measures, aimed at bolstering Chinese economic growth has made Chinese equities increasingly appealing to global investors, Srivastava said. Despite the massive FPI selling in financials, this sector is resilient since the valuations are fair and every selling is being absorbed by DIIs and individual investors, particularly HNIs, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. In addition, FPIs pulled out Rs 4,406 crore from the debt general limit and invested Rs 100 crore from the debt Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market.

FPIs withdraw record Rs 94,000 cr from Indian equities in Oct on attractive Chinese valuations

As per NSDL data, in September through 15th, FPIs sold equity for Rs 4,768 crores. This figure includes bulk deals and investment through the primary market. In the cash market FII selling was Rs 9,579 crores, says <keyword id="13402188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="v-k-vijayakumar" source="Orion">V.K. Vijayakumar</keyword>, Chief Investment Strategist at <keyword id="824141" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="geojit-financial-services" source="Orion">Geojit Financial Services</keyword>. Since the market is at record highs and valuations are high FIIs are likely to press sales in the coming days. With high bond yields in the US (the 10-year is at 4.28 per cent) and the dollar index above 105, FIIs are likely to sell more, he added. Even though the FIIs have been sellers in the cash market it didn't impact the market at all since it was neutralised by DII buying of Rs 8,309 crore through September 15. Hyper activity by retail investors is also contributing to the bullishness in the market. The ongoing market rally has taken the <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> to rich valuations. At the current level, Nifty is trading at above 20 times estimated FY earnings. The valuations in the mid-and small-cap space are becoming excessive. Investors have to be cautious, he added.

FPIs continue to be net sellers in September

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), who continued to remain net buyers for the third month until a fortnight ago, have cumulatively sold stocks worth Rs 8,671 crore, the latest data from National Securities Depository Limited (<keyword id="77072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nsdl" source="Orion">NSDL</keyword>) showed. They had aggressively sold Indian stocks and turned net sellers in the Indian equity market in January 2024, before turning net buyers thereafter. In February and March, they were net buyers. In December, they accumulated stocks worth Rs 66,135 crore. In November, the FPI inflow was Rs 9,001 crore, NSDL data showed. To put it into context, the entire year saw an inflow of about Rs 171,107 crore, and notably, over one-third of it came in December. The strong inflow of funds from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) had then supported the benchmark stock indices to march towards all-time highs. Before November, FPI participation in Indian stocks was lukewarm, and they had turned net sellers. They sold Rs 14,768 crore and Rs 24,548 crore in September and October, respectively. Before that, FPIs bought Indian stocks worth Rs 7,936 crore, Rs 11,631 crore, Rs 43,838 crore, Rs 47,148 crore, Rs 46,618 crore, and Rs 12,262 crore in March, April, May, June, July, and August respectively, data showed. New Delhi [India], April 9 (ANI): Foreign portfolio investors (<keyword id="19930635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPIs" source="keywords">FPIs</keyword>) continue to remain net buyers for the third month in April in <keyword id="20459350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-stock-markets" source="keywords">Indian stock markets</keyword>. They had aggressively sold Indian stocks and turned net sellers in the Indian equity market in January 2024, before turning net buyers thereafter. The latest data available from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) showed that the FPIs bought stocks worth Rs 35,098 crore in March. In February, they bought stocks worth Rs 1,539 crore. So far in April, they bought stocks worth Rs 1,590 crore, <keyword id="21243793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSDL-data" source="keywords">NSDL data</keyword> showed. Foreign investors continue to remain net buyers in India stocks for third month

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), which have been on a buying spree in India since the current financial year started, look to be shifting their sights to US bonds. In the first three weeks of September, they've pulled out ₹10,000 crore from Indian equities. Market pundits say that the hawkish Fed commentary in addition to revival in recession fears as well as highly-priced Indian stocks are the prime reason why they are homeward bound. FPIs have been incessantly buying Indian equities in the last six months from March to August --- and brought in ₹1.74 lakh crore during the period. High valuations "Since valuations remain high even after the recent pullback and US bond yields are attractive (the US 10-year bond yield is around 4.49 per cent) FPIs are likely to press sales so long as this trend persists," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at <keyword id="824141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="geojit-financial-services" source="Orion">Geojit Financial Services</keyword>, said. According to Vijayakumar, even after the recent correction, Nifty is trading around 20 times FY 24 earnings, making India the most expensive market in the world. "No doubt, India has the best growth and earnings prospects among the large economies of the world. So, if the markets correct further, by say 3-4% , FIIs can turn buyers even if US bond yields remain high," he added. Mayank Mehra, manager and principal partner at Craving Alpha, believes that strong economic growth prospects, attractive valuations, and government reforms could support foreign investment flows in the next month. According to the data with depositories, in the 15 trading days, so far in September, FPIs were sellers in 11 days with a net withdrawal of ₹10,164 crore. This figure includes bulk deals and investments through the primary market. Of the total pullout of ₹ 10,164 crore so far this month (till September 22), over ₹ 4,700 crore was withdrawn in the last week alone. The latest outflow came after FPI investment in equities hit a four-month low of ₹12,262 crore in August. FPI flows have displayed a subdued pattern over the past few weeks. This hesitancy among investors can be attributed to growing apprehensions about inflation and the interest rate landscape, particularly in the US, coupled with uncertainties regarding global economic growth, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director - Manager Research, Morningstar India, said. As a result, investors have turned cautious and adopted a "wait and watch" approach when considering investments in emerging markets like India, he added. "Higher oil prices and elevated US yields are keeping the FPIs on the defensive, however, we infer that stable economic growth in India vis-a-vis China and other emerging markets (EMs) will draw FPIs back to the Indian equities," <keyword id="270082" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hitesh-jain" source="Orion">Hitesh Jain</keyword>, Strategist Institutional Equities Research at <keyword id="3762452" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yes-securities-india" source="Orion">YES Securities India</keyword> said. On the other hand, FPIs invested ₹295 crore in the country's debt market during the period under review. With this, the total investment by FPIs in equity has reached ₹1.25 lakh crore and close to ₹28,476 crore in the debt market this year so far. The sectoral data revealed that as of September 15, mining, power, services, oil, and telecommunication registered the highest outflows, and sectors such as financial services, capital goods, consumer services, IT, and realty attracted cumulative buying. FPIs pullout ₹10,000 crore  in September on rising US interest rates

New Delhi, Foreign investors made a strong return by injecting more than Rs 2 lakh crore into Indian equities in 2023-24, driven by optimism surrounding the country's robust economic fundamentals amidst a challenging global environment. Looking forward to 2025, Bharat Dhawan, Managing Partner at Mazars in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>, said that the outlook is cautiously optimistic and anticipates sustained FPI inflows supported by progressive policy reforms, economic stability, and attractive investment avenues. "However, we remain mindful of global geopolitical influences that may introduce intermittent volatility, emphasising the importance of strategic planning and agility in navigating market fluctuations," he added. The outlook for FY25 from an FPI perspective, continues to remain strong, <keyword id="21125125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naveen-kr" source="keywords">Naveen KR</keyword>, smallcase Manager and Senior Director at <keyword id="21125123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windmill-capital" source="keywords">Windmill Capital</keyword>, said. In the current fiscal 2023-34, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) have made a net investment of around Rs 2.08 lakh crore in the Indian equity markets and Rs 1.2 lakh crore in the debt market. Collectively, they pumped Rs 3.4 lakh crore into the capital market, as per data available with the depositories. The dazzling resurgence came following an outflow from equities in the preceding two financial years. In 2022-23, Indian equities witnessed a net outflow of Rs 37,632 crore by FPIs on aggressive rate hikes by the central banks globally. Before this, they pulled out a massive Rs 1.4 lakh crore. However, in 2020-2021, FPIs made a record investment of Rs 2.74 lakh crore. The flows from foreign investors were largely driven by factors such as inflation and interest rate scenarios in developed markets such as the US and UK, currency movement, the trajectory of crude oil prices, geopolitical scenario, and the health of the domestic economy among others, <keyword id="19931027" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="himanshu-srivastava" source="keywords">Himanshu Srivastava</keyword>, Associate Director - Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. "Investors increasingly favoured Indian equities, drawn by the market's demonstrated resilience during uncertain periods. Compared to other similar markets, India's economy stood out as more robust and stable amidst global economic turbulence, further attracting foreign investment," he said. smallcase's Naveen said that economies like the UK and Japan have fallen into recession, Russia and Ukraine are still at war, the USA's inflation is running hot and the debate of soft versus hard landing still persists, while China has become the global anti-hero. Therefore, India has stolen the spotlight and is delivering numbers with strong GDP growth even amidst a tough business environment. After withdrawing funds in the preceding fiscal, FPIs poured a staggering Rs 1.2 lakh crore into the debt market too, marking a noteworthy shift in their capital flow. They took out funds to the tune of Rs 8,938 crore in FY23. FPIs' debt investments have been extremely robust this fiscal due to attractive yields on Indian sovereign debt relative to the US treasury. This has been supported by strong macros in the form of the robust growth outlook for the Indian economy, stable inflation and a stable currency, and the stated objective of the Government to improve its fiscal deficit, <keyword id="19925491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nitin-raheja" source="keywords">Nitin Raheja</keyword>, Executive Director, Julius Baer India, said. Additionally, the upcoming inclusion of Indian bonds in JP Morgan's index has led to an inflow in advance into the Indian debt markets. Further, the expected global tapering in policy rates should make bond yields in emerging economies look even more attractive to investors making this trend of inflows into Indian debt more sustainable, he added. In September 2023, JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co. announced that it would add Indian government bonds to its benchmark emerging market index from June 2024. This landmark inclusion, scheduled for June 2024, is anticipated to benefit India by attracting around USD 20-40 billion in the subsequent 18 to 24 months. This inflow was expected to make Indian bonds more accessible to foreign investors and potentially strengthen the rupee, thereby bolstering the economy, Morningstar's Srivastava said. Overall, FPIs started the year 2023-24 on a positive note in April and incessantly purchased equities till August on the resilience of the Indian economy amid an uncertain global macro backdrop. During these five months, they brought in Rs 1.62 lakh crore. After this, FPIs turned net sellers in September and bearish stance continued in October too with an outflow of over Rs 39,000 crore in these two months. However, FPIs became net investors in November and the optimism persisted in December too, when they purchased equity to the tune of Rs 66,135 crore. Again, they turned sellers and pulled out Rs 25,743 crore in January. This could be on account of China opening up after the lockdown. This led FPIs to pull out their investments from other emerging markets like India and divert them toward China. However, China struggled to sustain investor interest. Moreover, the fiscal year ended on a positive note as FPIs bought shares worth over Rs 35,000 crore in March.

FPIs make remarkable comeback, infuse ₹2 lakh cr in FY24

<keyword id="9797740" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coforge" source="Orion">Coforge</keyword>, <keyword id="6986952" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="idfc-first-bank" source="Orion">IDFC First Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6595587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="patanjali-foods" source="Orion">Patanjali Foods</keyword> saw the highest increase in stake by <keyword id="2005494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fpis" source="Orion">FPIs</keyword> in the September quarter, as per a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The highest increase in stake by mutual funds was in Coforge, Sula Vineyards and Restaurant Brands Asia while banks and financial institutions increased their stake the most in Restaurant Brands Asia, Union Bank and Amara Raja, the report said. The highest decrease in stake by MFs was in Supreme Industries, LIC Housing Finance and Ashok Leyland while for BFIs it was in Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank and Colgate Palmolive. In the September 2023 quarter, FPIs bought about $2.4 billion worth of equities in the secondary market. FPIs bought diversified financials, electric utilities and IT services <keyword id="6354298" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks" source="Orion">stocks</keyword> and sold capital goods and transportation stock. DIIs bought around $5.1 billion of equities in the September quarter. DIIs bought stocks in banks, consumer staples and IT services sectors and sold capital goods stocks, the report said. FPI holding (including ADR and GDR) in the BSE-200 Index stood at 21.4 per cent in the September quarter. DII holding in the BSE-200 Index increased to 15.7 per cent in the September quarter from 15.5 per cent in the June quarter. FPIs were overweight on banks and real estate; underweight on consumer staples and metals &amp; mining. MFs were overweight on automobiles &amp; components and pharmaceuticals; and underweight on consumer staples and oil, gas &amp; consumable fuels, the report said.

FPIs bought Indian stocks worth Rs 7,936 crore, Rs 11,631 crore, Rs 43,838 crore, Rs 47,148 crore, and Rs 46,618 crore, and Rs 12,262 crore in March, April, May, June, July, and August respectively, data showed. In August, however, the quantum of fund inflow had slowed. So far in 2023, foreign investors have cumulatively put in Rs 135,287 crore in the Indian stock markets. The latest fund inflows started after the recent banking crisis in the US, leading to the <keyword id="630197" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="silicon-valley-bank" source="Orion">Silicon Valley Bank</keyword>'s closure, among others, in March. Also, India's strong economic outlook, as forecasted by various global agencies, seemed to have made for a renewed appetite for domestic stocks. One of the most prominent lenders in the world of technology startups, Silicon Valley Bank, which had been struggling, collapsed on March 10, after a run on the bank by the depositors. Its closure led to a contagion effect and the subsequent shutting down of other banks. The foreign funds making their way into Indian stocks buoyed the broader market as the indices touched their respective fresh peaks. Sensex crossed the 67,000 mark for the first time. Notably, in January and February, FPIs sold equities worth Rs 28,852 crore and Rs 5,294 crore, respectively. NSDL data showed. Foreign investors were apparently cautious amid risks from the then-volatile financial markets. Barring some exceptions including the current one, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have been selling equities in the Indian markets for over a year, which started in October 2021 for various reasons. In 2022, foreign portfolio investors sold Rs 121,439 crore worth of stocks in India on a cumulative basis, the data available on the NSDL website showed. Tightening monetary policy in advanced economies including rising demand for dollar-denominated commodities, and strength in the US dollar had then triggered a consistent outflow of funds from Indian markets. The FPIs had been net sellers in the first half of the month, having offloaded equities worth ₹1,416 crore till November 15. However, the trend has changed after FPIs invested a huge amount of ₹5,328 crore in a single day on November 13, followed by ₹1,523 crore on November 16. The month of October had recorded the highest sell-off in equities by FPIs in the financial year at ₹24,548 crore. If we look at 2023, this was the second highest sell-off after January 2023 which recorded FPIs offloading equities worth ₹28,852 crore. FPIs had also offloaded equities worth ₹14,768 crore in September 2023, ending a six-month streak of inflows in 2023. While there could be a lot of reasons for FPIs offloading, the sell-off had increased after the yield on the 10-year US Treasuries topped 5% for the first time since 2007. In addition to this, the geopolitical conflict in the middle east has also fueled the sell-off. The banking and financial services and the information technology (IT) sector recorded a substantial sell-off. Despite the sell-off in the last three months, the net investment in FY24 has been positive. FPIs have invested ₹1,16,586 crore in the country so far. Analysts expect the sell-off to ease down as the yields soften and the Fed goes on hold for a longer period. After two months of selling, FPIs bet big on India after Diwali

<keyword id="6389755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="Orion">Foreign Portfolio Investors</keyword> (FPIs) have infused about Rs 12,400 crore into the Indian debt markets in November so far, making it the highest <keyword id="45422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflow" source="Orion">inflow</keyword> in more than two years, on attractive yields offered by the country's debt. The inclusion of Indian G-Sec in the JP Morgan Government Bond Index Emerging Markets has spurred foreign fund participation in the Indian bond markets, market experts said. FPIs have been bullish on Indian debt since the beginning of 2023 and have invested throughout the year, except March, when they had pulled out Rs 2,505 crore, data with the depositories showed. With the latest inflow, the <keyword id="2609447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-investment" source="Orion">net investment</keyword> by FPIs into debt reached Rs 47,900 crore so far this calendar year. According to the data, overseas investors put in a net amount of Rs 12,400 crore into the <keyword id="144818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="debt-market" source="Orion">debt market</keyword> this month (till November 27). This was the highest inflow since September 2021, when they had poured Rs 12,804 crore. This came following a net investment of Rs 6,382 crore in October. Indian debt is relatively attractive compared to debt in other emerging markets, and it offers a relatively high <keyword id="6355374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yield" source="Orion">yield</keyword> compared to debt in developed markets, Bhuvan Rustagi, COO and Co-Founder, of Per Annum and Lendbox, said. Apart from equities, FPIs pumped in a net amount of Rs 378 crore in the equity markets during the period under review. This came after FPIs dumped equities worth Rs 24,548 crore in October and Rs 14,767 crore in September. "The better-than-expected decline in inflation in the US around mid-October has given the market confidence to assume that the Fed is done with a rate hike. Consequently, the US bond yields have declined sharply with the 10-year benchmark bond yield correcting from 5 per cent in mid-October to 4.4 per cent now. This has forced the FPIs to slow down their selling," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said. Overall, the cumulative trend for 2023 remains healthy, with FPIs pouring in Rs 96,340 crore so far this calendar year.
