Please don’t tell me what to do,” declares a popular 21-year-old social media content creator and Bollywood actor in his recent reel, who is followed by 10.3 million fans on Instagram. If you think he received a ‘<keyword id="13467441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flying-chappal" source="Orion">flying chappal</keyword>’ later for talking back, you are right. This young man regretted saying no to his mother immediately, but it was too late. She was choosing her weapon of ‘discipline’ between a chappal, a belan and a chimta (slipper, roller and steel tong) by then. After careful deliberation, she decides to throw a chappal at her son. This recently uploaded reel garnered more than 3,30,000 likes and 1.8 million views. The comment section was filled with laughing emojis, with a fan requesting the mother to ‘use a belan next time’ and another user, relating with this content, said, “chappal is the best weapon.” A media <a href="https://www.iwmbuzz.com/digital/snippets-digital/leaked-cctv-footage-young-siddharth-nigam-misbehaves-with-mother-receives-flying-chappal-in-response/2022/03/02">platform </a>that covers <keyword id="1965440" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-media-trends" source="Orion">social media trends</keyword> even did a story on his reel, calling the equation between him and his mother, ‘sweet and adorable.’ A Facebook meme page, ‘Flying Chappal,’ with more than 2 lakh followers, defines it as a “device used by Indian parents for reshaping their kids for a better tomorrow.” Every meme on this page, as the name suggests, is about getting hit by a flying chappal from your parents, friends or partners over the slightest disagreement. <div type="image" title="flying chappal" msid="90446298" hostid="261"></div> From Facebook meme pages and <a href="https://youtu.be/KOjAIsqFLgo">YouTube </a>shorts to now <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CXIlLj4AkdP/?utm_medium=copy_link">Instagram </a>reels, this chronicle of ‘flying chappal’ has taken shape of various contemporary forms of expression. Even Bollywood, which often celebrates ‘anushasan, pratishtha and parampara’ (discipline, prestige and tradition), has normalised spanking kids or throwing chappals to ‘discipline’ them in various movies. <div type="image" title="Thappad" msid="90445777" hostid="261"></div> In fact, as a popular dialogue from the movie Dabangg suggests, abuse is so normalised that we are scared of love or feeling seen, not a slap. <div type="image" title="Dabaang" msid="90445783" hostid="261"></div> “Chappal fek ke maarungi” (I will throw a chappal at you) is a threat that could send a chill down your spine if you are a five-year-old kid, instil fear in your fragile mind and force you into doing a task that you absolutely hate. These traumatised kids, by the time they turn nine, are immune to “kaan ke neeche maarunga” (to put it loosely, ‘I will give you a tight slap’) and several other abusive threats they receive from their parents. To these kids, it is just a way of learning how to be a ‘good’ boy or a girl. Tragedy or comedy: What does the audience think of flying chappal reels To call out creators who normalise <keyword id="146441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="physical-abuse" source="Orion">physical abuse</keyword> with flying chappal reels, Divija Bhasin, a psychologist, a digital content creator, uploaded a counter <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CXYJw_Upd8O/?utm_medium=copy_link">reel </a>last month urging her audience to think about the long-term consequences on the child’s mental health. Bhasin says that this ‘flying chappal’ content could also be a coping mechanism. “It’s easier to laugh at it than to realise how much it affects us. This is something that is beyond the control of people when they are growing up and humour helps them to ignore the lack of control in this situation. There are many people who don’t see a problem with it because they were brought up that way. Finding it funny is actually a consequence of seeing it happen to everyone around them. It’s the idea that if everyone else is doing it, it must be right,” says Bhasin. Referring to sitcom Friends’ character Chandler Bing, Nikhil Taneja, co-founder and chief executive (CEO) of youth media and mental health platform, Yuvaa, also says that a lot of humour comes from repressed trauma. “You can’t always live in pain so what you do is you start laughing about it because it’s easier to laugh than talk about pain in an honest, vulnerable manner. It's difficult to see it as a tragedy and it's far easier to see it as a comedy.” According to a <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/survey-shows-77-parents-spank-children-at-home/story-zNNnm3jsFKshnpcCKPS0YO.html#:~:text=A%20recently%20conducted%20nationwide%20survey,this%20on%20a%20regular%20basis.">survey </a>conducted by an online community First Moms Club of over 1,790 parents, 77.5% of parents resort to hitting children, with 28% admitting that they do this on a regular basis. Another <a href="https://www.unicef.org/india/media/3776/file/Key-Findings-Parenting-Study.pdf">report </a>launched by humanitarian aid organisation United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 2020, pinching, slapping, beating with rods, denying food were among 30 different ways Indian parents abused and punished their children. These punishments were doled out to children for perceived infractions as minor as watching television for too long, fighting with siblings or not completing homework or tasks. These punishments leave permanent scars on kids. So, if content creators are trying to reflect on their own pain and journey, a disclaimer clarifying that their content doesn’t mean to promote abuse or normalise violence, could help. “There is a part of the population, which would not like violence-based humour or maybe even get triggered with it, but there are people who may find it de-stressing. Hence, I think there are warnings at the beginning of videos so that people can choose the kind of humour they watch,” says Dr. Hemal Vajani, leading clinical hypnotherapist and homoeopathic consultant. Can small 60 second reels really normalise abuse? In today’s digital world, social media influencers hold a lot of power. A single Tier I creator can reach out to at least 2-3 million people at a time, convince them into buying new products or take another look at deep-rooted conditioning. So, if a content creator casually slaps their friends or kids to elicit laughter, it is not very often that someone in the audience would label it as abuse. “We think it’s “just a reel” but it’s not. It influences us on a more subconscious level because we are watching these not with the purpose of active learning. We take in this information and it changes the way we think because it is so normalised in media, we think it’s okay,” says Bhasin. Suggesting how content creators can talk about abuse, she adds, “If people want to joke about it, they should do it in a way that shows how it is actually abuse. Don’t undermine its effects by turning it into a lighthearted reel. It’s not lighthearted. It’s abuse and always will be (even if we laugh at it).” In the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/education/2021/may/19/us-children-corporal-punishment-schools">US</a>, if a parent hits their kid, child services intervene. In India, slapping is a part of our ‘discipline’ culture -- so internalised that we laugh at our own pain. Dr. Shweta Sharma, clinical psychologist and founder, Mansa Global Foundation, points out that humourous content around physical abuse, generalises and normalises that behaviour. “When you are promoting anything, you are generalising behaviour. People form an opinion that this is common and we can do it, too. Here, media is so effective because you are using two senses -- audio and visual. While your ‘intention’ is making people laugh, they will perceive it as something that’s normal. At the same time, I think it does normalise it a little bit in people's heads saying, okay, if I'm not the only one going through it, maybe it is not that bad. So, I wouldn't like to put a lot of all the blame on folks who should do this because I don't even think they realise it. They are not really mining it for humour, they're also expressing that this is what their lives are like. We probably need to have these conversations with them as well and ask them if 'you feel like this is funny, what have you gone through. I feel for you.' At the same time, of course, we need a larger responsible creation ecosystem, where not just this but so many other things are normalised. We need to have tougher chats on that,” says Taneja. Mental health experts who spoke to Business Insider India said that when abusive behaviour is delivered as a joke, the humour decreases the perception that the speaker needs help and it increases our tolerance for violence. Internet users who stay silent are also indirectly endorsing it, becoming a part of the problem, too. However, the time has come to start calling this out for what it is. Abuse.

The tests, conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, were carried out as part of the live firing trials against high-speed aerial targets. The first test was to intercept a medium-altitude, long-range target and the second against a low-altitude, short-range target. The missiles intercepted the targets and destroyed them completely, registering direct hits at both ranges. Developed jointly by DRDO and the <keyword id="621699" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="israel-aerospace-industries" source="Orion">Israel Aerospace Industries</keyword> (IAI), for use by the Indian Army, the MRSAM Army weapon system comprises multi-function radar, mobile launcher system, and other vehicles. The performance of the weapon system was validated through the flight data captured by range instruments like radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry deployed by ITR, Chandipur. Senior officials from the DRDO and the Indian Army were present at the test site. Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="Orion">Rajnath Singh</keyword> congratulated the DRDO, the Indian Army, and the industry for the successful flight tests of MRSAM-Army, saying both the successful tests establish the capability of the weapon system in intercepting targets at critical ranges. DRDO successfully flight-tests Army's surface to air missile

Film exhibition majors <keyword id="799" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pvr" source="Orion">PVR</keyword> and <keyword id="6407732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="INOX" source="Orion">INOX</keyword> Leisure on Sunday announced merger. Accordingly, the Board of PVR and the Board of INOX Leisure at their respective meetings approved an all <keyword id="13478774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-amalgamation-of-INOX-with-PVR" source="Orion">stock amalgamation of INOX with PVR</keyword>. "The amalgamation is subject to approval of the shareholders of PVR and INOX respectively, stock exchanges, <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> and such other regulatory approvals as may be required," a joint statement said. "Upon obtaining all approvals, when the merger becomes effective, INOX will merge with PVR." As per the statement, shareholders of INOX will receive shares of PVR in exchange of shares of the former at the approved exchange ratio. "Post the merger, the promoters of INOX will become co-promoters in the merged entity along with the existing promoters of PVR." "Upon effectiveness of the scheme, the Board of Directors of the merged company would be re-constituted with total board strength of 10 members and both the promoter families having equal representation on the Board with 2 board seats each." According to the statement, <keyword id="6738750" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ajay-bijli" source="Orion">Ajay Bijli</keyword> would be appointed as the Managing Director and Sanjeev Kumar would be appointed as the Executive Director. "Pavan Kumar Jain would be appointed as the Non- Executive Chairman of the Board. Siddharth Jain would be appointed as Non-Executive Non-Independent Director in the combined entity." "The combined entity will be named as PVR INOX Limited with branding of existing screens to continue as PVR and INOX respectively. New cinemas opened post the merger will be branded as PVR INOX." Besides, post the merger, PVR promoters will have 10.62 per cent stake while INOX promoters will have 16.66 per cent stake in the combined entity. "The partnership of these two brands will put consumer at the centre of its vision and deliver an unparalleled movie going experience to them," said Ajay Bijli, Chairman and Managing Director of PVR. "The film exhibition sector has been one of the worst impacted sectors on account of the pandemic and creating scale to achieve efficiencies is critical for the long term survival of the business and fight the onslaught of digital OTT platforms." In addition, the combined entity will become the largest film exhibition company in India operating 1,546 screens across 341 properties across 109 cities. "The combination would augur well for the growth of the Indian cinema exhibition industry, besides ensuring tremendous value creation for all stakeholders, including customers, real estate developers, content producers, technology service providers, the state exchequer and above all, the employees." PVR and INOX Leisure announce merger

New Delhi, Jan 13 () The Department of Revenue has identified 931 cases of fraudulent GST refund claims through data analytics and has now tasked the GST data analytics wing to scrutinise all past and pending refund claims filed all over the country for inverted duty structure, sources said.
 Refunds of over Rs 28,000 crore are said to have been filed by over 27,000 taxpayers so far on account of inverted duty structure in the current financial year.
 The sources said such identified taxpayers who have purchased goods from tax-evading non-filers would face verification and scrutiny as necessary.
 This is being weekly reviewed and monitored by Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey.
 The sources said that to curb input tax credit (ITC) frauds, data analytics is to be done on all refunds since 2017, keeping an eye on the modus operandi of unscrupulous refund claimants or fly-by-night or shell business entities for availment of fake ITC.
 GST formations have booked 6,641 cases involving 7,164 entities till November last year and have so far recovered around Rs 1,057 crore.
 The highest number of such fraud cases have been booked in Kolkata zone, followed by Delhi, Jaipur and Panchkula (Haryana), the sources said adding that a recently detected fraud by central tax authorities in Delhi, involving GST refund for inverted duty structure, was deliberated at the 2nd National Conference on GST last week.
 The sources also said investigators in Delhi have busted through data analytics a significant fraud case, where fraudsters created a network of over 500 entities comprising fake billers, intermediary dealers, distributors and bogus manufacturers of hawai chappals for availing and encashing fake ITC credits.
 The bogus 'manufacturers' created in Uttarakhand were making supplies to other fictitious entities and retailers in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
 The raw materials for the chappals, known as EVA compound, are chargeable with 18 per cent duty whereas chappals are chargeable to GST of 5 per cent, sources said adding that resultantly, law allows the manufacturers to claim refunds of the inverted duty structure in cash.
 GST investigators found an ongoing parallel investigation in Uttarakhand to be connected and took swift action in preventing refund claims of Rs 27.5 crore. Through meticulous cyber-planning, fraudsters had created over Rs 600 crore of 'fake credit', which they would have continued to encash had it not been busted. The main accused in this case was arrested in December and continues to be on judicial remand.
 It was also through data analytics that recently, GST formations have identified a few exports with 'star' status that were fraudulently availing IGST refund and were untraceable at their registered addresses.
 In these cases, an exporter with over Rs 50 crore of exports of readymade garments has taken refund of Rs 3.90 crore, while the entity's total GST payment in cash was merely Rs 1,650.
 In another case, tax payments in cash have been found at Rs 51,201 while the exporter has obtained refund of Rs 9.59 crore.
 The GST data analytics wing has been able to identify all such cases involving fake invoicing and fraudulent tax credits, which have been encashed through the facility of IGST refunds, the sources said. DP HRS
