<ul><li>Walmart-backed e-commerce platform <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword> employs huge fulfilment centres as storage facilities for its goods.</li><li>It has warehouses, fulfilment centres and delivery hubs spread across the country to ensure a seamless operation for its business.</li><li>Business Insider India tries to decode the complex supply chain that Flipkart relies upon and its newly installed robotic machines.</li></ul>E-commerce giant Flipkart uses hundreds of robots and cobots to improve its operations and ensure a smooth delivery experience to your doorstep. Its warehouses, fulfilment centres and delivery hubs that are spread across the country ensure a seamless operation for its business. At its biggest fulfilment centre in India, located 50 kilometres from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/flipkarts-asias-largest-fulfilment-centre-to-process-a-million-shipments-a-day-during-bbd/articleshow/93851477.cms">Kolkata at Haringhata</a>, the facility uses new technologies such as automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic packaging arms, cross belt sorters, a nine-kilometre-long network conveyor belt and automated guided vehicles. Nearly 70% of these automation technologies deployed at Haringhata were built in India and it reduces Flipkart’s turnaround time by 35-50% in shipment movement. “With the help of route optimisations and dynamic planning, Flipkart ensures reliable deliveries to customers while optimising for cost and resources in all eventualities, including supply-chain disruptions,” Hemant Badri, senior vice president and head of supply chain, Flipkart Group told Business Insider India. Using robots to speed up delivery Before your order reaches your doorstep, it goes through several stages at Flipkart’s fulfilment centres. If you order a teddy bear from Flipkart – from unloading a package from various sellers into the centre to sending it to you – it goes through a long supply chain. In-bound: Products from various sellers are unloaded into the fulfilment centre and they go through a quality check by employees. Sorting and retrieval: Products are sorted by an intelligent conveyor belt, shelved as per their categories, and retrieved when an order is placed. For example, your teddy bear could be shelved in a soft toy section, retrieved when you place an order. Packaging: The teddy will then be packed into a box as per its size. It is not just humans that choose the right size, robotic packaging makers produce boxes too and drop the packages containing the product into a white courier bag. The robot is managed by an engineer. Shipments: The teddy then sits on a 9-km-long cross-belt sorter, which assigns shipments as per different pin codes. Out-bound: Here, your teddy will go through one last quality check and shipped as per your pincode. After the package reaches a delivery hub, a machine called Allocation Engine takes over. Explaining the machine’s role, Badri said, “[It] distributes goods among the many delivery models that offer the fastest time allocated to the location of the consumer.” With an increasing demand for quick deliveries, Flipkart relies on Automated Beat Planner, which predicts the average reaching time. It also predicts any roadblocks that might cause delays. “It forecasts the attempt time, padded with data-backed buffers and round-offs, to account for on-field deviation in plan execution and prediction of inaccuracies in quick deliveries using technologies like Automated Beat Planner (to suggest the delivery agent's route) and FLIP (to gauge customer's address accuracy),” shared Badri. In India, Flipkart has over 80 facility centres – 18 of which are large facilities that store appliances and 21 fulfilment centres are for groceries. Three new big boxes, or fulfilment centres, will be launched in the next three years. Using solar energy to power robots Flipkart’s newly added machines, which have increased efficiency, also require a huge amount of electricity to function. Walmart-backed Flipkart has installed solar panels which can power heavy machinery. “We are running at least eight hours on solar and 25-30% of power consumption savings we have done so far,” said Prabhakr Kolla, VP, F&amp;I at ekart, Flipkart. The facility has a three-megawatt solar power plant and the platform aims to touch 40 megawatts all across facilities in a few years. The process of commissioning a 2.75 megawatt rooftop solar power plant at Haringhata has also begun. With a number of Indians entering the gig economy, which includes workforce that is remotely managed by online platforms such as Flipkart, Uber among others, workplace conditions have become an important consideration. Walmart owned e-commerce platform Flipkart topped the company rankings in India for its delivery and logistics arm eKart scoring seven points. While food delivery platform Foodpanda, cab services platform Ola and Uber scored just two points, fulfilling only the criteria for minimum wages. However, Uber’s food delivery platform UberEats scored three points, adding the facility of offering a process for the decisions that affect workers. The report measured the markets on five fronts — fair pay, fair working conditions, fair contracts, that is transparency around the terms &amp; conditions, fair management, and fair representation. The ranking has been concluded on the basis of a collaborated ‘Fairwork Research Project’ by the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore, the University of Cape Town, the University of Manchester, and the University of the Western Cape analysing the markets in India and South Africa. In India, Flipkart tops the ‘fairness’ quotient for gig economy workers: Report

<ul><li>The most popular items on <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> show that Indians are actually getting ready to stay home for a long time as they bought products to make life at home easier. </li><li>Both Amazon and Flipkart saw a 9X increase in the number of sellers coming back to the platform for business.</li><li>Within the first 24 hours of opening up of e-commerce, Amazon saw a 31X growth in demand for robotic vacuum cleaners, 10X for dumbbells &amp; weights and more.</li></ul>With Lockdown 4.0, e-commerce companies in India finally began selling non-essential items across the nation. E-retailers like Amazon, Flipkart have seen a huge surge in demand ever since then. Both Amazon and Flipkart saw a 9X increase in the number of sellers coming back to the platform for business. “We are proud to see a 9X spike in the number of sellers and MSMEs resuming business this week, compared to the first week of the nationwide lockdown,” said a Flipkart spokesperson. But interestingly, the most popular items on Amazon show that Indians are actually getting ready to stay home for a long time as they bought products to make life at home easier. Within the first 24 hours of opening up of e-commerce, Amazon saw a 31X growth in demand for robotic vacuum cleaners, 10X for dumbbells &amp; weights, 23X for dishwashers, 12.5X for bicycle trainers, women’s flip flops witnessing 2.3X growth, 3.5X in innerwear, 3.9X seen for guitars and 3.6X for children’s books, as compared to the lockdown phase. “We are humbled by the customer response and geared up to meet the pent up demand for priority products that customers need over a prolonged period of lockdown. The sellers on Amazon.in have seen orders for consumer electronics, kitchen &amp; home appliances, smart devices, laptops, phone accessories, apparel and more. Work from home and online schooling enablers such as laptops, books, headphones and computer accessories continue to interest customers,” said an Amazon spokesperson. Meanwhile, Flipkart saw a hike in the demand for kitchen appliances including Hand Blenders, Microwave Ovens and Induction cooktops as well as fans, air coolers and air conditioners “Considering more people are spending time with families who have different entertainment, professional and educational needs, there is a growing requirement for multiple screens in a single household. This is reflected in the high demand for Mobiles, Tablets, Laptops, and Televisions, all of which have doubled in demand. Fashion choices have become more functional. Inner-wear and Lounge-wear are seeing an increased demand, with women's sleepwear witnessing a very good growth,” said a Flipkart spokesperson. Similar trends were also seen at Snapdeal as personal grooming products, work from home needs like monitors, keyboards, extension cords, external hard disk, were among the most ordered items. Orders on Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal show Indians are preparing to stay home for a long time

<ul><li>Flipkart has just announced that it's bringing in robots to help it sort through packages before delivery at its Soukya center in Bangalore.</li><li>These Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) can sort packages according to their delivery pincodes. </li><li>The company also claims that the new technology will not negatively impact the existing workforce since the existing the employees will be 'upskilled' to handle 'higher value adding work'.</li></ul>Amazon's primary contender in India's e-commerce space, Flipkart, is bringing in robots to help it sort through packages before they go off to be delivered. The Walmart-owned online marketplace handles eight million shipments per month, on average, and its new Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) will help the company meet the increasing demand of Indian users — more of whom are coming online each day. The pilot project of the robot-based sortation technology is being implemented at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=score&amp;curpg=1">Flipkart</a>'s Soukya sortation center in Bangalore. The entire setup includes over a 100 self-guided robots that will automatically sort the packages according to the delivery pin codes. Initial tests run by Flipkart show that every hundred AGVs lead to a 60% increase in process efficiency. So, working in conjunction, the robots can process upto 4,500 shipments within an hour. The company claims that the other advantage of having this setup is that it can moved really easily as well. The mobility factor, according to Flipkart, make it easier for it to scale if there are any supply chain operations expansion requirements for future demand. But, within the existing infrastructure that Flipkart has to operate, AGVs improve the facilities output and remove the need for space expansion. What's the catch? If automation is coming in to take over a task that humans normally implement, what's going to happen to the workforce? For instance, one of the main concerns with Amazon in the US is how automation is taking over. During the holiday sales in December 2018, the <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword>' enterprise <a href="https://press.aboutamazon.com/news-releases/news-release-details/amazon-customers-made-holiday-season-record-breaking-more-items">announced</a> more items had been ordered worldwide than ever before. Yet, somehow, it had managed to do with fewer seasonal employees — 'than ever before'. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=amazon+india&amp;sortorder=score&amp;curpg=1">Amazon</a>, in multiple reports, has maintained that automation doesn't take jobs away but that robotics only augment work processes — insisting that there is room for both. In Flipkart's case, the company claims existing workforce will be upskilled to do "higher value-adding work — all at a similar or lower cost."

 It's understandable that Flipkart is looking for a way to limit its expenses especially since, despite its 50% jump in revenue, the e-commerce platform <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/internet/flipkart-fy18-revenue-up-50-but-losses-grow-5x/68161493">reported</a> a fivefold increase in losses during FY18. And, it the ever increasing pressure to meet consumer deadlines as Flipkart and Amazon go head-to-head in the Indian market is no joke. <ul><li>After losing its crown to Amazon last year, Walmart-owned Flipkart’s latest bid to win over the market share is a new project called ‘<keyword id="7651346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-edge">Flipkart Edge</keyword>’. </li><li>Spotted on the Flipkart App, the ‘<keyword id="7651344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="house-of-flagships">House of Flagships</keyword>’ is an exclusive portal for flagship smartphones. </li><li>There also seem to plans to roll out membership for the House of Flagships, which will give members exclusive privileges — the details of which are still unknown. </li></ul>The e-commerce place in India is currently a battle zone between Walmart-owned Flipkart and Amazon. And, it looks like it’s going to stay that way at least until Mukesh Ambani <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/e-commerce-wars-amazons-jeff-bezos-vs-mukesh-ambani-in-india/articleshow/67620116.cms">officially launches</a> the online version of his store, Reliance Retail. Flipkart’s plan Flipkart had so far led the Indian market but Amazon took its crown away recording $7.5 billion in gross merchandise value (<a href="https://inc42.com/features/flipkart-vs-amazon-india-who-won-the-indian-ecommerce-battle-in-2018/">GVM</a>) in 2018. One of the categories where Amazon zipped ahead of the competition was electronics — smartphones, specifically. Aside from the ‘exclusivity’ angle, the fact that there is a membership plan involved will help the brand retain its customers. <ul><li><keyword id="874458" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="xiaomi" source="Orion">Xiaomi</keyword> today held its Smarter Living Event in Bangalore.</li><li>The company launched new air purifiers, a trimmer, a TV, and a <keyword id="11289590" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vacuum-mop" source="Orion">vacuum mop</keyword>.</li><li>It was the first launch of the year by Xiaomi for its <keyword id="544284" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="smart-home" source="Orion">smart home</keyword> products.</li></ul>Xiaomi India hosted their flagship smarter living event in Bangalore, where the company showcased its latest range of products across multiple categories at its flagship AIoT event, Smarter Living. The event highlighted Xiaomi India's vision for a connected smart lifestyle by unveiling the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 series, Xiaomi <keyword id="17123176" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rvc-mop" source="Orion">RVC Mop</keyword> 2i, and the new Xiaomi Smart TV X Pro series. Xiaomi India also introduced the Grooming Kit and Trimmer 2C to expand its personal care category. Now, Let’s take a look at Xiaomi products that are revealed at the launch event today. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4" comment="subhead" text="Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4">Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4</cmsannotation> Xiaomi's air purifier has significantly upgraded to tackle visible and invisible pollutants. It now features a new Pre-filter, a True HEPA filter, and a negative ioniser. With an improved 360-degree air suction and a clean air delivery rate (CADR) of 400 cubic meters, the air purifier operates quietly at 32.1 dB. It offers various modes like Sleep, Auto, and Favorite mode, and its OLED display shows temperature readings, power buttons, and other information. The touch buttons make it easy to operate, and the display changes color based on pollution levels. Additionally, it offers smart home features like remote control, voice control, and adjustable settings, and it can be controlled with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. It is priced at ₹9,999, but ICICI bank customers can avail themselves of a special offer of ₹9,499. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2i" comment="subhead" text="Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2i">Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2i</cmsannotation> The Xiaomi Vacuum Mop 2i combines vacuuming and mopping functionalities. It is equipped with 25 high-precision sensors, including a wall sensor, docking sensor, and collision sensor, enabling it to navigate and clean efficiently. The mop features a Zig-Zag cleaning method, and its 450ml dust compartment and 270ml water tank are electronically controlled. The device can be controlled through the Xiaomi Smart Home app and Google Home app, making it a smart home device. It has a long battery life of up to 100 minutes and a suction capacity of 2200 Pa, making it an effective and convenient cleaning solution. The grooming kit has a price tag of ₹1,799, but with a special offer, you can buy it for just ₹1,699. At the same time, Beard Trimmer 2C is available for ₹1,199. Equipped with self-sharpening stainless-steel blades, the kit also includes two combs that offer 40-length settings up to 20mm. The kit also features a Nose and Ear Trimming Blade, Body Grooming Head, and Precision Blade. The Xiaomi Grooming Kit offers a runtime of 10 minutes with just 5 minutes of charge. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Xiaomi Smart TV Pro X Series" comment="subhead" text="Xiaomi Smart TV Pro X Series">Xiaomi Smart TV Pro X Series</cmsannotation> The new smart TV series will have a new premium metal bezel-less design. The smart TV features 4K HDR, a wide collar gamut, HDR10+ support, and Dolby Vision. On the software side, this is the first smart TV series by the brand that features Google TV paired with Patchwall. The new range offers three variants - the 55-inch, the 50-inch, and the 43-inch TV models. The series comes with a special price starting at ₹31,499. The Xiaomi Smart TV X Pro 55” variant has been launched at ₹47,999 and will be available at an effective pricing of ₹45,999 with bank offers. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Smart TV X Pro 50” is priced at ₹41,999 and will be available at ₹39,999 with bank offers. The 43” variant, on the other hand, is launched at a disruptive pricing of ₹32,999 and will be available at ₹31,499 with bank offers. Xiaomi launches a new line-up of air purifiers, a TV, and a vacuum mop in India
